  • A manica was a type of iron or bronze arm guard, with curved and overlapping metal segments or plates, fastened to leather straps, worn by Roman gladiators, and later optionally by soldiers.

I have to return the praise; that skateboard work was beautifully done.

this is awesome, I've been looking for a basic reference that could show me how it looks to move in a manica

Hope you enjoyed; these are all essentially first time projects; so I never know how they're going to turn out.

Really good! Is it collapsible, in part at least ? How small a box will be fit to store one of these?

You should try doing some Samurai armor, if not maybe a full set of a gladiator class armor. A murmilo, Hoplomacus, or even a Scissor, even a Provocator comes with a chest armor you can build with.

A year ago I starting doing BJJ. One of my professors started judo at age 3; and did it for years before transitioning to BJJ. I really want to make some lamellar armor just so he can throw me and I can see how it all works against someone in armor. I do want to make a murmillo helmet (Cassis Crista I think?); I've always loved the way they look. Maybe one of these days.

Hey man, awesome project! Big fan of the addition of the handguard. I'm planning on making something similar myself, would you mind clarifying how you would change the plates around the elbow to increase flexibility?

On Medieval arm harnesses the elbow cop has a nice bowl depression for your elbow to fill as you flex and extend. This arm bound up a bit at the elbow with certain movements. I had a hard time finding a good pattern; so I just winged it. I think if the bands were longer it would give more room to flex; or maybe I just wore it a little wrong. I could also open up the hoops at the elbow a bit; might help. Either way; not bad for a winged DIY project.

Beautiful work, man. I’ve got a question about your templates, I guess, since I’m in the SCA and want to fight with a gladiator at some point. I’ve tried making a leather set of manica, but the mobility and flexibility was garbage. What do you recommend to increase flexibility while having that oh-so-vital elbow coverage?

Excellent question. I need to play with the elbow segments a bit more and see what happens if I widen the bands. I've also done a fair bit of SCA fighting; but being from Denmark by birth, I can't help but go for the Norse persona.
