- This video is to show how to make a Manica, or segmentata arm guard used by the roman legions in the later part of their empire. It was also used by their Cataphract forces.
If you have any questions just leave them in the comment section and I will attempt to answer them. Thanks.

The segments are unfortunately overlapping the wrong way if this is meant to be Roman. They usually overlap with the edges pointing toward the shoulder. Prevents a thrust getting caught and stuck in your arm when your sword arm is straightening for a thrust.
Check the depiction on the "tropaeum traiani", it's shown there overlapping downwards.
I have a latin project where I have to make a gladiatrix costume and this couldn't be more helpful! Thanks!
Wow; this video couldn't have come at a better time! I've been meaning to make a set of segmented pauldrons, and this tutorial is perfect! Keep up the great work!
You should watch crescentmoonarmory's video.
Duncan McBride Glad you liked it. I also did a tut on how to make segmented greaves if you're interested.
I love this video
This is so cool:)
this is so cool! I'm making one out of cardboard for, well just for fun, cos we don't have much comic cons in India, and this gave me an idea about the design
How expensive you think those things were, back then?
Wow! good job, man. I've been making one out of duct sheet metal and it's a little flimsy, so I'm reconsidering using something a little thicker, but not too thick that sheers can't cut through them. Do you mind sharing what gauge steel you used and where I could find it?
Disciple1Actual 16 gauge steel welding plates I bought at Lowes.
Is it possible you can link a template the length of each segment please
How much over lap do you give to each segment? What is the best way to prevent gaps appearing between segments when using the Manica?
+MassReckoning I gave about quarter of an inch for over lap. I would suggest more over lap though. As for preventing gaps, again more over lap might be the best option. Another would be another band of leather down the center.
Question why did you countersink the rivet holes?
Mainly to remove and burs and lose metal. It was also done so that rivets stay flush with metal and it doesn't get caught on the edges of the other segmented pieces.
What goes on the other side of your arm over your elbow?
bigdogbigben it's a sleeve from a leather Jacket I brought at a thrift store. I wanted to try something different then straps.
Schuler001
No I mean the metal doesn't cover your arm all thhe way around. Seems like your elbow is exposed
bigdogbigben It partial covers my elbow. In historic context the rest of my arm should be covered by Maille.
This is supposed to cover the elbow, not the forearm.
You did not add any kind of your unique build for your make and model!
