Forging a pair of Roman Pugio short swords/daggers

  • In this video I hand forge a pair of Roman Pugio short swords or daggers. The blades are forged from ⅜” thick 80CrV2 steel. The blades are approximately 3” wide at the guard, and 2” wide at the forward shoulders near the tip of the blade. The blade is 9” from guard to tip, and the overall length is 14”. It is an integral construction, where the pommel, handle, guard, and blade are all forged from one contiguous piece of steel.

    That 80 CRV look like it was hard to move how is it compared to 5160

      I work with both 80CrV2 and 5160 alot, and I've never really felt like either were hard to work with. I suppose I'd say 5160 is easier to move with a hammer, but the difference is probably pretty minimal. I think my struggles really came from such thick starting stock, 3/8".
