Gladiators - Types Classes and Equipment

- There were many different kinds of Gladiators, actual classes which would differ in Equipment, weapons, armours and fighting style. A Gladiator was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena. Most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized, and segregated even in death. Here I review the most famous ones :D
What, no mage class for gladiators?
MrDUneven ahahahahh xD nope, sorry xD
+Metatron should have been a chemical warfare class that throws frog slime at his opponentor would that resemble a druid
+Metatron or one that summons minions of Plouton form the underworld as a warlock
+MrDUneven I'm sure there was some autist convinced he was a mage at some point in gladiatorial history
+MrDUneven
they were too unbalanced that's why they got removed...
The secutor and the scissor were shaped like fish, rounded like fish and having the eyes of fish. And the scissor were armor with scales looking like fish.
So the fisherman aganist fish.
Andreas Jensen True! Also the scissor's crescent-shaped tool is reminiscent of a fish's tail
Thats a lot of fish
terror from the deep!
Well shit!
Theres always a bigger fish
Scissor's left hand weapon is super effective for grabbing shields. I don't think you mentioned that. That's why he doesn't have shield, he is meant to counter them.
Boodgemeister there is no "classes" bro
Theres actually no real proof of how it was used
Thought the same thing the second I saw that hook
The thing is, the retiarii don't use shields, only nets
@@darfish2769 They would try to maximize the use of their weapons since, well, its literally a life and death scenario. But there are multiple theories on how it was used and no real proof, so we can guess but we can never really be sure.
So with all these weaknesses and counters between gladiator classes, you're telling me we could put together a Pokemon-style Gladiator game
@My last 4 Brain cellsYESSSSSSS! ( M.Bison meme) lol
@Baxi Tabaxi
Well what’s it called?
@Baxi Tabaxi My Systems Design teacher worked on Gladius. As the Xbox version was one of my favorite games of all time, I was beyond thrilled when I found that out. Such a gem of a game. 🙂
Someone already mentioned it, but it (Gladius) exists, and it’s glorious. 🙂
Yeezs
This man needs more subs, he is one of the most intelligent people I've seen
+Darkheart Productions Consider it done XD
knowledge and intelligence are two different thinks.
Nice profile pic, where'd you get it?
Knowledgeable*
With knowledge comes intelligence for example if you're 25 years old and is heavily intelligent but you're mind is empty and I mean totally empty, no knowledge of languages or writing you are pretty stupid "for todays standards" but I guess if you're very intelligent you have a better chance and a faster way of learning new things....

+Arsène Lupin No they weren't balanced, infacti sometimes we have situations of two gladiators against one to try and balance up things, but most of it was the experience of the gladiator, a veteran could be very difficult to defeat no matter the class.
+zaco21 americans aren't the only one that ones that use metric, Burma and liberia do too.
+Metatron Do you know of any movies about gladiator battles?
+zaco21 I am not an American or English and was brought up with the metric system yet, it is not hard at all to understand inches.
Easy approx conversion 1 inch = 2.5cm. Use this and you will have a good idea of the length in cms. Not hard at all.
+Spuds McHaggis 2.52 cm actually
treyspurge
No it is actually 2.54 cms. That is why I said an easy approx conversion and not an exact conversion.
"Secutor" means chaser. Do you think this is were we get the word persecutor?
+Yung Gabs as Italian , Persecutore comes from Secutore (chaser) . so yes :)
Nearly definitely I always think that as I hear the word and it makes perfect sense to me.
Maybe pursuer
In Spanish we have "seguidor"
Yung Gabs Well every word, with a few exceptions, with a Latin sounding piece is most likely of Latin origin.
Trax -> from Greek "Thrax" = "a Thracian"
Murmillo -> ? I have not yet been able to discover the literal meaning of this word; I've found that it comes from the Greek word "Mymillon", but I have no idea what that means, except that it may come from the Greek word "Myrmiddon", which would kind of make sense given their equipment.
Retiarius -> Latin = "man with a net"
Secutor -> Latin = "chaser"
Hoplomachus -> from Greek "Hoplomachos" = "fighter (battler) with a Hoplon (shield used by Hoplites)"
Scissor -> Latin = "slicer" (certainly sounds deadly!)
Provocator -> Latin = "challenger"
Dimachaerus -> from Greek "Dimachairos" = "man with two swords" (by the way, "machaira" refers to a short sword)
Thank you, Metatron! Just thought I'd fill in a few gaps.
Murmillo - From Ancient Greek μόρμυλος ("elephantsnout fish"), a Nilotic fish represented in hieroglyphics and adopted for the helmet crests of the mirmillones.
Apparently Murmillo comes from Murma, a certain type of fish that was caught using nets.
That's because he was often used against Retiarius.
But I appreciate the speculation with Myrmidon because that was my first ever online username
My understanding of gladiators is that the more armor they had, the shorter their weapon was. So one guy had full armor and big shield and a little itty bitty dagger and the guy with the long trident and net had almost no armor. Then there were some in between. I guess I was wrong about that.
It's kind of like that tho
Yep, game design and balance 101 really XD
no wonder why the gladiator from for honor loves toes
RepHard Holo, gimme dem toes!
He likes them toes.
Yummy
I just read the Gladiators: The World's Most Deadliest Sport and learned all about these I love how well thought the classes were, the fact they balanced the Gladiators like the ones with holed helmets they couldn't see well, so the had to get close, but in their advantage was their body shield and gladius, it's also where I learned Contemptus Mortis. which mean't fearlessness in the face of death. This was a fantastic book and anyone looking to learn more on the gladiators must get this book it's by Fik Meijer.
I also loved learning about Claudius and his role in the hunting games.
"hey balanced the Gladiators like the ones with holed helmets they couldn't see well" not true
@@David-ni5hj its True as. Like when retiarius fought against secutor, secutor had less visibility so retiarius would usually keep the net close to the ground and behind him so secutor wouldnt know where the net comes from. And secutor had no edges on his helmet or shield so the net would be less likely to stick on him. Balance..
The first game to have a balance system: the Gladiatorial Games.
the scissor looks like an ancient roman big daddy from bio shock.
xD It does!
God this comment is fucked
I was looking for this comment. Haha I thought exactly the same thing.
No gladiator with 2 shields? xD
Well you can find one in DKS2.
+jay roush more like every souls game
+Adolf Hitler yeah but in DKS2 they have those twin shields you could power stance.
+jay roush Those we're op.
Dwarven Testudo XD
It is almost like you just pitched an idea for a Gladiator game.
If done in a similar fashion to Kingdom Come, but focused solely on combat in arena, it might be a very interesting experience.
You may try Road to Freedom for something similar to that. It is old but has a very complex combat style and a very steep learning curve.
+BlackBunik Arena Rex, by Osprey Games I believe
Bit of a late reply lol but for honor is pretty much the exact game you suggested but with a few more classes and different factions
Chivalry Medieval Warfare - battlegrounds map
First of all, nice shirt!
I used to have a book when I was a kid called "A Visitor's Guide to Ancient Rome" and it had an section on gladiators and the Colosseum. There was a part where they listed and described many of the common gladiator classes. This video made for a great trip down memory lane.
*starts video holding a sword like he does it everyday*

Man I couldn't imagine being stabbed by a sword or even a slash when I cut my finger I can't handle it lol
Roma invicta
I know this was over a year ago, but it actually doesn't hurt nearly as much. A small cut doesn't sever the nerve completely, therefore is still slightly intact to send pain through the body. That, along with adrenaline pumping, leaves the body very able to sustain far more punishment. Combining these two with training and you've got yourself someone who can shrug of pain almost entirely.
Over 30 years of martial arts experience and I have been cut clean to the bone several times during training as well as competitions. It sounds far worse than it is.
Cheers.
thanks for your insight you make a good point
Wait what? what kind of martial arts you trying of? modern day gladiator?
I'd imagine HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) or a similar martial art involving real weapons.
Same
I really liked how you packed a *lot* of information clearly and concisely. Thanks so much for putting this together.
kids discussing the gladiators they support:
Cheater!
You picked the gladiator that counters mine, no fair!
I'm picking last next time!
p.s.
Also, it feels like small eye holes are a balance mechanic not to make defensive classes Overpowered.

"Colloseum: Road to freedom" nostalgia.
I would say gladiators were more of a TV show for ancient rome.
Or maybe something like a youtube lets play.
I’d say more like a livestream event.

I love your videos! Dont stop, you're amazing, I hope your channel picks up soon
Rebypox Thank you so much :D
Great video! Thanks for creating quality content like this!
This video was very very helpful when searching for specific gladiator pictures for my D&D fighter. Thank you. :D
I have to admit, I would love to see Gladiator combat back when the Colosseum was first built.....

+Claudio Cunha Thank you very much indeed :D
I enjoyed your video very much. Thanks for making it.
Apart from your impressive knowledge about gladiators, I think you're a good presenter. Hope you make more videos like this.
Man your videos are great. It's a lot of interesting stuff. thumbs up!!
This video is amazing, very interesting
Diegomolinams98 Thank you so much I am glad you like it ^^
The Provocatores are a variant of the Hastatus Legionary class of the manipular system. Hastati had a scutum, helmet a pectoral (small square/rectangular plate of bronze on the chest) and one greave on the left leg. Originally the Hastati are said to have used the Hasta lance as main weapon but switched to pilum & gladius in later times, but when exactly is not clear to me. One source says they changed weaponry and tactics after the Gallic invasion of 390BC(?) others figure it was after or during the Samnite wars. Do you know anything about that great Metatron?
Have watched this video a number of times because I find it very interesting. Great video 👍🏻.
+1 for the more in depth video concerning gladiator classification and match pairing. I would love to see that.
1:56 so they were like Pokemon?
Water vs fire type, Plant vs Water type...
Yes?
More like Water vs. Poison.
If one gladiator type would have a clear advantage over another type, the fight would be boring, so they had to make sure only balanced types fight against each other.
No
Idk, not that simple
Gladiator took their Larping seriously. Lol
A very informative video indeed. I only recently subscribed, but I have to say the content on this channel is absolutely superb.
I have been watching your videos for awhile and I really seem to enjoy them, I subbed and tapped that notification bell to see more of your upcoming videos good sir c:
This video should be a "must to watch" before start watching Spartacus... haha :v
very informative
b33lze6u6 Glad you think so :D thanks for watching ^^
Man I must say it’s impressive the amount of knowledge you know about this subject.
Great vid, would love to know more about the rarer classes. It reminds me I saw a documentary a while ago about this very subject and it mentioned a few additional things. It seems it is thought the reason most gladiators possesed good protection to the head, arms and legs but not the torso was that the public prefered to see quick and bloody deaths rather than drawn out maiming. Also in regards to the Retiarius it was also mentioned that most gladiators were not allowed to actively retreat from their opponent, only the Retirarius was allowed to use this tactic and thus make full usage of their lightly armoured nature and to 'bait' the opponent to keep with the fisherman theme.
Query - Would a Gladiator choose a class or be given it by trainers? Also would they switch you stay that class for ever?
"AVE CAESAR! MORITURI TE SALUTANT!" :)
"Greetings, Caesar! We who are about to die salute you!"
"AUT NON..."
Amazing video, as always
Great video ! Love to see more .
Isn't the first armor set for the gladiator in For Honor called retiarius?
For you gamers
Listening to this while playing the gladiator in for honor
Got mvp every time ;)
Gladiator classes=different kinds of sports nowadays. Makes perfect sense to me. I'm so happy to have acquired this knowledge. Gratitude.
Nostalgic. Going back and watching all of these.
Given the fact they were divided in classes, were they allowed to grab equipment either dropped by or from a fallen opponent in the case multiple fighters were in stage at the same time? Or did they have to stick to their designed weaponry and armor?
Great video once again, thank you!
Well, it's a battle, I don't see why they shouldn't be able to do that.
If it's during a battle yes, but you don't keep it if you won. So let's say during a fight a gladiator drops his sword, then the other gladiator could pick it up and kill the other with it, but would have to give it back if he won at the end of the battle.
the "ludi gladiatori" were more similar to sport matches than real(istic) battles. There were many rules that the gladiators had to follow. We have no sources telling us if "steal" equipment was allowed or not, but we know that even the attack and defence pattern were established for each class; and we know that there were referees inside the arena. We also know the Kill the opponent was not the only thing that did matter, the way they did was important too. We can assume, I suppose, that pick up someone else weapon would have be seen as cheating and not allowed.
Diego Tiberi Excellent answer, thank you very much!
Yes, the Romans love when it gets more bloody
Nice vid just subbed
Thank you for subscribing!
After seen this video i subbed too, and if you don't against the idea i catch up the conntact with you. I'm a gladiator reenactor from hungary and we show nearly the al kind of gladiators you talk about in the 3 video. Maybe you know my ludus- Familia Gladiatoria Pannonica.
PvtEnt That sounds very cool ^^
metatron i am afraid you are wrong in a thing. those weights on the net are something needed to fish, they were not an alteration for the games. those nets are the kind that you keep casting and retrieving them. you throw it in water with a twirling motion so it will be kept open both in air but in the water as well by the weights. without those weights you won't catch shit!
He needs 453452354265753435 subs
Love your channel. Impressed with your English. I learned to speak Spanish at age forty. Never to late to learn.
This video was perfectly executed. Good job , Metatron!
cool video thank you
The Trax is holding the sica the wrong way, unless that's how he means to stab. The blade was sharpened along the curve, like the opposite of a katana or sabre.
+Ruser nope
MR1shank Got anything better to say?
www.wulflund.com/img/goods/en/medium/sica_thracian_sword_dagger_b.jpg
The way it's held at around 2:45, you could stab with it, sure, but that's not the point. It's a cut and pull weapon. If you'd cut the way it's held in the picture, most of the upper part of the blade (which is where most of the force is focused) would not even come into contact with whoever you're trying to hit since the curve is so drastic at that point.
Thracian/dacian/illyrian sicas were sharpened on the inside of the blade, like a sickle or schyte.
Enjoying your channel 🙌
glad u made another classes video
A question here if you have the time and intrest. "There are a lot of complaints about half-armour in fantasy styles and questions about bikini armour and so on. But, suppose you have limited funds. How would what kind of priorities would you make. What would you invest in first? What I am really wondering is if it, for example makes sence to only protect one arm with plate.
Definitely a helmet and thick clothing. This is what happened historically to soldiers who couldn't afford "good armour" so to speak.
In archeological studies, it has been found that at least 80% of the ancient remains of fighters in battlegrounds had some sort of damage to the skull. So I would go for a helmet first.
Alright, thankyou. But, (just because there may be buts), while any one born in this century would buy a helmet, getting your genitalia scewered insted...would it really be preffered in ancient or medieval times? Still in defence of the chainmail bikini.
Although I have wondered why in some movies the actors remove their helmets. I guess if they are officers yes and need full vision. But how is it in a duel? Helm off or on?
Happy new year, btw! :)
I would probably pick helmet first, then arm protection (gloves), then the rest of the armor.
I'd invest my money on a helmet and then pick up something flat and hard and use it as a makeshift shield...
The Gladiatorial Classes were not necessarily balanced. Some of them were purely designed for entertainment, like the Retiarius Class.
Well not completly true.. Secutors had poor visibility due to the helmet being shaped wierdly and having that extra protection retiarius would keep his net close to the ground and behind him to make sure secutor wouldnt know where the net came from (some times putting the net on the ground and get secutor to step on it and pull the net right under him causing him to fall)
But. BUT there is a completly stupid and idiotic "class" Andabata they would fight with helmets that had no eyeholes In them (blind fighting)
Great video 👍🏻
Great Video!
Who remembers the game 'Colosseum: Road to Freedom'?
Weren't Murmillos supposed to portray legionnaries, and they fought Trax as a reconstruction of Rome conquering Greece?
Trax represented the Tracians, a different enemy of Rome.
@@cadunkus no, Greeks are part of their ethnic group Hellenes, same as Thracians (including Dacians even if they got influenced because Dacia was Scythian before) Macedonians Epirotes Phrygians Paeonians Lydians and every Anatolian peoples (except Hettites and Kaškians )and Thessalians.
These people have a common ancestor, the Pelasgians which they builded civilizations based on the Pelasgian one.
Great video. Thank you
Nice muscle bro. I love your videos and love Roman history!
I'm quite certain that many of these classes evolved as direct result of different sponsors competing against each other. Lucius the Fish Merchant has sponsored a school training retiarii and secutori and Marcus the Horse Trader sponsors a school training diplomachii and bets big money on his gladiator being being better.
Hey Metatron!
I really dig your videos and this one actually told me more about gladiators than I ever knew before! Awesome job you're doing mate.
Oh, by the way, can you tell me, what's the sword you hold in the beginning of the video? It looks really amazing!
+Nightingale33 Hey there, thank you very much for watching I am glad you like my content. That sword is Anduril, from Lord of the rings. ;)
Lol, at the beginning of the video I was like, what?, he's holding Anduril while talking about gladiators?
Scissor is one of those meme setups u decide to run that actually end up working really well
Lol mordhau
very interesting and educated video.
Now I understand more about gladiators.
Thanks for your effort and dedication!
Love from Taiwan, Asia.
Now I know how you know so much storycall stuff. You where there, in the middle ages, in Japan, in Rome, HOL SHIT.
And I know it because of your One Piece shirt, the show is being made since B.C

Hey I just found your CZcams channel this is pretty cool.
Awesome video :D
Thank you!
"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
Weren't gladiators basically like movie starts/entertainment artists are to us? I mean, lots of people volunteered to be gladiators, and really good ones gained huge amounts of popularity and fans.
Alright, kinda late I know. Gladiators were generally slaves, it occured very rarely that anyone would choose become a gladiator since it would kill you at some point
Alastor also late, but further elaborating on what you said. Depending on the standing emperor, it was a ‘movie star’ role and had a good number of volunteers. Then with other emperors it was a death trap with no hope of living through 2 fights.
Respect! Keep up the good work!
Great video
I am SPARTACUS!
the second sword on the wall looks so weird. i think you assembled it in the wrong way.
That is Orcrist, from the hobbit, that's how it's supposed to look
+Logan Plourde Thanks, i find the orcrist figures from google, and now i am sure the handle in this video is assembled in the wrong way.
@@xinglinjiang4952 yep.. the point of the pommel is supposed to face in the direction of the edge of the blade...
Very interesting, much appreciated.
This channel is awsome
Very good video.
The Retiarius must be the class that died most.... The trident is a very bad weapon to kill people due this 3 pointy spikes. One single point is the best for penetration purposes (no pun intended). Also he has almost no protection comparing to the others.
RyuFireheart Your point and logic are very sound, but still for some reasons the Retiarius was the one that would fight against two (secutor) so it must have been a pretty strong one, probably because of the net.
RyuFireheart Actually Retiarius were the most feared classes and the one considered the strongest, the protection were used to reduce differences in power between the classes. The trident does his job if we look at the skeletons of gladiators.
Metatron Maybe the Retiarius was a skilled fighter so he got the worst equipment to fight against 2 less experienced fighters as a way to balance things. It also seems like the Retiarius was meant to represent the civilian (fisherman) fighting agaist an invading army (well... 2 man with decent equipment).
Maybe people liked this role playing stuff alot
RyuFireheart It's true that a trident wouldn't penetrate as far but it would still be deadly. I'd be more concerned with the extra weight having 3 points would add. It also looks like it would get stuck quite easily but given it has so much range and Retiarius has 2 more weapons this could be used to his advantage.
RyuFireheart The trident looks pretty effective to me and I wouldn't be surprised if it would go through padded leather or even mail, but I would definitly prefer a shield over a net. I have some problems imagining that it could be employed effectivly especially when it hits the outstreched arm, but due to the success of the class I guess it had to be (with alot of practice).
Great vid! Very useful for prepping for certamen!
Very good video, perfect made!
KalojanGostun Thank you so much :D
Thank you very much for showing us pictures for most of the video. Sometimes you show yourself for the majority of the video and it becomes hard to visualise as you are speaking. This is good though 👏👏❤️
Awesome video ^_^
Ah,such a thick accent.You have improved greatly.
Intelligent, well-researched commentary, a reproduction of Andúril, and a One Piece shirt.

Great video. Can you do a video on the type of training for each different type of Gladiator?
