These are amazing. Especially where you took ideas based on experience with modern combat and created your own designs. Also, I can only assume that they may not have sewn on maille skirts because of lacking weather resistant steel. Perhaps it was done and examples didn't survive. At any rate, they surely left certain pieces pointed to the soft kit for ease of donning.

As soldiers often had to provide their own gambeson and armour, I daresay they had a lot of input in to how it was made. Collective experience would give them an idea of what worked and what didn't. Of course, what they might want and what they could afford may not always match.
