  • Combs have origins deep in human history. Refined combs have been found dated to over 5,000 years ago in Persia; though simple combs have been identified with the Neolithic and late Mesolithic.
In Scandinavia deer antler was the material of choice. these combs were elaborately carved, periodically over engineered, and frequently feature as grave goods alongside other implements of importance. This suggests that for Scandinavians, hair formed an important part of their identity.
Combs dating to around 725, made of reindeer antler likely originating in Norway, have been found as far south as Ribe Denmark and as far West as Orkney; indicating widespread Scandinavian trade and likely interaction with Norsemen and the British Isles more than seven decades prior to the infamous Viking raid on Lindisfarne in 793.
