- Dayton Ohio did not disappoint! What a great crowd of folks and some awesome cars. Some fans brought enough parts to fix the air shocks, so we did that in the parking lot at our motel.

My Dad beat the poop out of me daily, but it did make me tougher and prepared me to be able to fight when I needed to.
Your kids will probably remember all this car stuff for the rest of their lives, they are lucky to have a dad that involves them with cool stuff :)
Growing up, I was always in my pop's shop helpin him wrench on things, and now that I am in my 50's and my pop is in his 80's I wrench on his cars. I have always repaired most of my own stuff, aside from really complex things, like transmissions, or an engine rebuild, I use to do everything else.. These days a disability slows me down a bit.. Heading out right now to pull plugs, and see if I can unlock a 3.7L V6
With the new air line for the shock-a-lators, Betty is now rated "Car Wash Safe"

Such a breath of fresh air seeing a traditional conservative family on a road trip like the days of old. Your boys impress me more and more of how well behaved they are. A testament to good parenting. Something that’s definitely missing in America today.

It’s amazing how much better off a family is when the parents love each other and stay married and raise the kids together. In the “hookup culture” of today most kids are born to a mom who doesn’t want them to know their father and probably doesn’t even know for sure which one it is himself, but if she did he would be a deadbeat who couldn’t be “tied down” by any more than a one night stand so it’s no great loss. Derek and Jessica really are the gold standard of American Families, we should all aspire to be like them.
Giving out the Hotwheels and Matchbox cars to the local kids is a great thing for your own kids to be part of. Giving back is always a positive

These long road trips build lasting memories for the kids involved. I’m getting close to 40, but I still have fond memories of driving all the way to Washington state from the middle of the US. I was only around 6 years old at the time.
Derek and Jess...you guys are a amazing team. Seeing how you work together made me miss my wife of 36 years who I lost just over two years ago even more. Nothing beats having someone who can be just as crazy as you with you on this journey that we call life. Thank you for including people like me in your adventures, and making us feel like we are not alone and we are there with you and your beautiful family. It makes being alone a little bit more bearable in these trying times.

She said, "Well, I offered a light." He said," Yeah, then you put in my pupil." and Jessica just laughs. "I felt it in my cerebral cortex, then you turned the light on!" I seem to remember on the pre-trip Derek telling Jessica 'he would NOT yell at her for holding the light wrong.' This is only day 2. Funny stuff, I want to binge watch the future episodes NOW.

At 8:16 that is my good friend Demetrius 1972 Cutlass. That car was just finished not very long ago. Less than a month I believe. Of all the cars a guy could show in a video, it makes me smile seeing a close friends car pop up. Thank you Derek, Jessica, and the boys. You guys giving hot wheels cars to kids made my heart smile. Keep it up!
Dayton Ohio... In August of 2003 I bought a '68 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible on eBay from a guy in Dayton. Flew one-way from Atlanta to Dayton and drove it home. Starter solenoid quit (of course) while I was somewhere in Kentucky. Shoulda known an old Ford starter solenoid would go out. LOL. I had bought a AAA membership before I left, and the tow guy simply towed me to the local auto-parts store and we replaced it. :-) Kept that car for 15 years.

I don't know all that much about cars but I love watching this channel because it's pure Americana, though I'm not an American. So little traffic on the roads, bloody great!

Very entertaining to be included in your road trip. I'm an old grandad now and this brings back memories of a 69 Cougar I bought in college years which I installed AIR SHOCKS just like those on the Betty Caddie! Which out, they tend to slowly leak out (but now u have new air lines and fittings so good luck). Your wife is terrific, and so are your kids. Really enjoying your trip!

Just awesome that you could rescue this fine old Cadillac and put it to use for a great family trip. With the windows down so much looks like maybe the AC lost its charge? Just hard to believe you got a 51 year old AC to work in the first place. Great video!
@kevin barker If memory serves those held like four pounds of R-12. Back when R-12 was two pounds for a buck with a connector it didn't matter. In my dad's station we would check freon like oil.
The ac works, only at the feet though, they like like the windows down.
@kevin barker My 1969 Cadillac didn't have factory air. The funeral director ordered it without that option.
@kevin barker No Kevin, the chassis was made by Cadillac. The only thing Fleetwood about the commercial chassis was the door sill plate. The chassis and a few body parts were shipped to the coach builder and they designed their body and interior appointments. Yes A/C was available if the funeral director ordered it on that chassis.
@kevin barker Air conditioning was usually about 10% of the price of the car so that would put that option at around $600.00. Some people in the '60's bought the 62 series coupe or sedan without all the options to drive a Cadillac.
Also remember the buyers of Cadillacs in the '60's were probably 50 years old at least putting their birth date in the teens or earlier. People that grew up watching the car industry grow didn't trust the new fangled options like power windows and air.
The original purchaser of my 1963 Fury ordered a big block and air. His wife begged him for power steering but he wouldn't go for the power brakes for anything. He didn't trust that option. This was told to me by the wife when I bought the car from her in 1982.
As a guy that works 70 hours a week I can't imagine filming it and staying as even tempered as Derek. What a stud and a great family man
