- Part 1 of 3: After an exhaustive 10-year search, I found my Late Fathers old 1956 Buick Special 2 door hardtop way down in Texas. Of course, I'm just going to jump in the car and attempt to drive it home 1,200 miles from Texas to Minnesota! Think I'll make it on?

A guy is about 4 minutes into this video and the emotional connection that you have put forward has already made this video about 342% more interesting! 🥰
Thank you friend
I'm 2 minutes into this video and I have tears in my eyes.
@@ViceGripGarage as I've said before, I've been with you since the sub count was around 83k, and even though we get into your life on the live stream, this is what I've waited for the most, to hear your story, your family memories, what made you, you. A huge thank you for taking me down memory lane with you. And Lance and crew, such a wonderful Christian family. Thank you for giving them a shout out, they got screwed and rumors went to flying around on their old channel. They got done wrong so bad. I follow you and them mainly. I watch a couple others you hang around with when I can stand them lol. But you are a cut above the others and Lance and family are right up there with you, because they're good, honest, clean video folks like yourself. Thanks again Derek. Now my question has been answered when I seen the live stream with you getting out of the old Buick.
As much fun as your "a guy" character usually is, I'm glad you realised it wasn't necessary for 99.73% of this video.
@@ViceGripGarage Loved the content of this video. My Dad had a 1940 Buick that I wished I could find. Congrats on getting it back and looking forward to seeing this process play out. I know it’s gonna be great as to what ever you decide to do with it. A guy sure looked happy to get it back.
I've never been happier for a guy on CZcams to have rediscovered a piece of his father. Congratulations Derek.

Sweet! Like my first project car - a 1957 Buick Super. Painted mine black cherry. Ran great and looked spectacular!
Videos like this are why Derek blew past all the other Home garage restoration channels to become the biggest one.
Right, I like he's true to his roots. All the ones I started watching started buying super cars and other unobtainable cars. Totally turned me off

I've had two Buicks from the 1950s. Yours is beautiful! Mine were a '54 Special and a '55 Roadmaster. I'll join as soon as I find a credit card that works.
Don’t paint it yellow. That black and white with the interior is absolutely beautiful. Really classy looking. Happy for you to have gotten it back!
EXACTLY
Like a tuxedo or penguin 😜
Agreed, Black and white looks better.
Added bonus he can throw some Sherriff decals on it and get an old red cherry to plug into the lighter to put on the dash.
It may look better black and white, but the car was originally yellow. It was also Yellow when his dad had it
Exactly, No yellow paint.
13:20 as a fella goes to fire it up the first time, i look to the left and read the side of the car next to it. "Miracles in sight", as the old nailhead in the Buick roars to life. Well Moses sandals, i guess its right, isnt it!? 😂 i love that old Buick, she's a beauty! All that hard work years ago paid off Derek!
This almost made me cry seeing this whole thing. My dad passed away last year, and we had a 1965 Skylark that he owned since he was 16. I don't know a lot about cars beyond the basics, and I'm definitely not financially capable of restoring it. It's rough, it's been sitting since 2002 in the yard and is starting to show some bad signs of rust. Seeing this really makes me want to do what I can to fix it, but I'm just so clueless. I've learned a lot from watching your channel and I'm confident I could get it started and running again with a day or two of effort, but I wouldn't even begin to know where to go from there. The interior is shot, it's sitting on 3 flats, I don't know half of where any of the wiring or tubes go or what they do. After seeing this, I'm starting to think I'd regret selling it, but I'm also regretting letting it sit and rot not doing anything with it. I'd love to see it on the road again, and I know it's a solid vehicle... at least it was 20 years ago... My father rebuilt the engine from the ground up when he was in high school. I wish I had more time in the day, and I wish he was still here to restore it like we planned a few years ago.
At the end of the day it just takes money. Either way it takes money. Do some looking around and see if you can find a good mechanic to do the bare minimum to save it.
good play to try to manipulate someone into doing it for you
@@arresthillary9502 you're about as bright and cheery as your chosen screen name indicates.
Best thing you can do for now is get it inside out of the rain so it doesn't rust two-way rot to nothing but junk

Derek,
I know you said this video is more for documenting this for your kids/family, but I want to thank you for uploading this for us to see too. This is something I've always wanted to do with my uncles 74 Duster, which I know I'll never find. A blue v8 (does a 340 sound right? I'm not picky on the motor as long as it rumbles) with wide mags on the back. This is inspiration to find even another one like it some day like your current giveaway car. You just dont find those things on the east coast in Canada anymore.
The Buick looks amazing, and I'm so happy for you that you've found your old man's Buick. Heck it means a lot to me, I cant believe how much it means to you.
Proud of you buddy. -Darian
I'm 83 and this was one of my first cars. No problem. You'll make it. The trans is the only problem I ever had. Luck.

It's a Sign!!!!
That she "The Buik" needs a full restore back to Factory Original, Mind yo what with all the extra Value slapped onto her once she's done, I hope you wont be tempted to pimp her off again.

Love Dad connection
I tried to help my dad as a kid by repainting a wall that he just painted a day before. He left his brush in a can of paint thinner. So I grabbed it just like dad did and began to paint. I got ripped limb from when dad got home, my own mother said that she thought he was going to kill me! My back ain't quite right but I still miss my dad!
Tough love is one thing, but I probably would have gone ape shit if my kid was in the next room tearing up the dirt while I'm trying to paint just on bay over.
Man, just cheers 🍻.
I really think you should share this one. The family story is too cool and special not to share. Love it.

I felt the same way....
I was coming down to the comments section to post EXACTLY this same thing!
Yup just wanted to come on down and say thanks for letting us ride with ya on this special journey.
Roger that. Mine as well. My dad bought a creampuff 1955 Special four door hardtop in 1957, I was 5. All white with black and white interior, same 322 2bbl with power steering. It was the family wheels for 4 yrs, then my oldest brother's daily, then his buddy's daily. Many memories.
I totally understand Derek's love for this particular Buick! Just when I think VGG can't possibly get any better - it does! There's a huge amount of nostalgia in cars..... 'specially as a feller gets older. My taste in cars was completely formed by my grandfather's 1967 Chevelle Malibu hardtop coupe (which I fantasize about tracking down someday in an Arizona junk yard - or better yet, totally preserved by a serious Chevy lover!).
So I'm gonna sit back and enjoy this vicarious trip down memory lane AND somebody getting a chance to make right something that went terribly wrong.
I graduated from high school in 1963. I bought a 1961 Falcon Futura soon after. I recently found one just like it on eBay. White with red bucket seats, 3 on the tree!💕. Well I watched you pick up this car and decided as a 79 year old woman I probably shouldn’t try to buy this sweet memory. Love your channel. I’ve learned a lot from you.
my Dad had a 56 buick special. I loved that car and have been looking for one to fully restore, it was one of my first cars I worked on.. His too was a two door. Now, age has set in on me. so its just a dream.
Derek. Please. Don't apologize for taking as many trips down Memory Lane as you want. That's a huge part of this car's charm!
Tbh I wanted to hear more. Regardless, very cool watching someone totally in their element
Leaving a vice grip under the hood for Derek to find was a nice touch.

I thought I was gonna cry when I heard that story. Then I realized it wasn’t the story eye watering me but my dog farted. It was really bad. Ty
"Miracles in Sight" on the car next to you is to perfect.
My father owned a 56 Special (also black and white) in 1963 when I was 10 years old, he bought it in Hawaii when we lived there on Pearl Harbor Navy Base. He loved the car and when we were transferred to Seattle the Navy shipped it from Hawaii to Seattle for us. Dad wasn't a big car guy but he really loved that car. Our whole family of 4 were in the car in Seattle when someone ran a stop sign and hit us hard from the side right where I was sitting behind my Dad. The car was totaled, and Dad was very sad about that and he bought another 56 Special for a parts car to rebuild his, but never got around to doing it. Seeing your car brings back a lot of memories from a whole lot of years ago.
Laughed hard when you said someone's getting arrested wasnt me 🤣

Two odd years behind and 3 minutes in, gotta pause cause my eyes a leakin a lil bit. Just about a month ago, we swung a deal on a JD 4010 that my Dad watched leave the farm almost 30 years ago after the sale thinking he'd never see it again. So yeah, this video hits close to home. Glad I found it for him. He still gets choked up telling people about finding it. Ya know, they say these things are just cold steel and iron and rubber and glass, but dammit I fully believe every machine has a soul and a personality. It may be worth so many cents a pound at the scrap yard, but to the man that put countless hours or miles on it, having an old mechanical friend like that back after it being gone is beyond priceless.
Wow. I'm so glad you got your dad's car back. My sister stole my great, great grandfather's side by side 12 gauge and pawned it for OxyContin. He died in 1936. She knew she couldn't get it back because she it a multiple felon. It took a bit of doing but my mom and I got it back. It now lives in my gun safe rather than my mother's closet. So I know what it's like to lose something important.
I just love his lingo and the way he says things, tells stories, etc. and he is just simply so damn calm, all the time. We could all learn how to be better humans from him.

Don't feel bad brother it's only temporary, me my car was stolen during this episode 2019 Mazda GT 3 Hatchback. Now watching the after the carwash episode.
I am 70 yo now. I was raised by my grandparents. They bought a '55 Roadmaster off the showroom in NJ. Moved to FL in '57, when I was 7. It was blk w/wht roof. Made more than one road trip standing up in the front seat between them, my grandma had a death grip on my legs all the way. Strange way of thinking back in the '50s.

Hello, ever since I was a little girl, I'm 52yr now, I've always wanted an "old car", to me from the 50's, but not a 55 Chevy everybody has. I found a 1950 Pontiac Silverstreak Chieftain w/2dr hardtop, straight 8 engine, and light up Indian hood ornament for $200 w/ my largest paycheck. I named her Christine after the movie because when my stepdad put the 6volt battery in, I came out one night and sat inside, happy to have my first car. I turned on the radio and the song "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley!!😍 She can talk to me thru the radio!! She's been sitting at my friend's for 30+ yrs now. Because of life's roller-coaster I couldn't get to her. Now I'm remarried with more than $200 that I can bring her to me. I really want her to start up like this gentleman revives these older cars from the fields or salvage yards!! I hope he sees my post and send an email to reach him. When Christine wakes up and I turn on her radio, I know she'll sing some love song from somebody, singing🎶"What Took You 🎶So Long To 🎶Come Back 🎶To Me!!"🎶😍

The most beautiful runnig motor I ever experienced was a 1970 cad. 472? It was a low mileage rescue job. The car was a beige on biege? Boat but the engine was sweet. After scraping out the Pensoil and or Quacker State and putting in castrol 20-50 the engine began to guiet down. Then it smoothed out. You could cruise at 85 but at 70 the engine would purr. A powerful but beautiful purring sound... amazing. Thinking back now... I put new AC Delco plugs in,The old ones were carbon fouled. I set the carb to lean best idle, most old cars were set to rich because no1 understood carbon/ heat etc..Also the timing was allways set to far advanced, because lime the air/ feul mixture it sounded better to the untrained ear.
Nice car, keep the interior as is and I’m so happy you got the car back, it’s enough to make a guy cry

First car I ever drove was a white 55 Buick in 1966. No power steering or AC. Cutting through a narrow street in a strip mall a brick wall of the drug store moved and hit the front right bullet of the bumper. Small damage to the wall. No damage to the bumper. My Dad loved Buicks. My Grandfather had a Roadmaster. Really nice car. Dad sold the car to another Officer he worked with in the Pentagon for $1.00. Never had any issues until the MLK riots when a brick got thrown through the windshield. Black and White is my vote. Peace.
This was my father’s dream car. Said this car was the best Buick ever made. Every time he saw one he’d say “there she is”. I always loved the interiors and dash. About two years ago saw one in primer gray stripped interior, built as a gasser with a rebuilt bored out 427 Chevy big block dual quads, with a hurst 4 speed. Only see this car at car shows now. Oh yeah, he use to say the Buick v8 in this was different then any other GM v8. I don’t know why, does anyone else?

Alas, a couple of weeks before my 16th birthday, my grandfather sold the car because, as he told me, “there was no way you were going to get your hands on a car with this much power” and less I forget, less than 24,000 miles at the time of sale.
Nothing sounds better than a nailhead, keep er black and white looks classy. Glad you got her back.
You know, a guy who isn't a gear head, nor a car guy (yet) is surprised at how happy he is whenever a new VGG notification comes.
You’re like me with aviation videos. I’m not interested in flying but enjoy learning about it.
If you’ve lost your dad, you get it. I get it so deeply, Derek. Nice work man.
