We Bought a '57 Chevy During The Epic 2,000 Mile Road Trip: Finnegan's Garage Ep.144

- The adventure continues! We made it from California to Texas and planned to make it to the east Texas state line but got sidetracked by the site of '57 Chevys behind a fence. There were so many of them! Hardtops, post cars, wagons etc. We met the man, Dickie, who owned them all. He spent his life restoring '57 Chevys and '40 Fords and these were the leftover parts cars. Newbern fell in love and struck a deal to buy a sweet hardtop that we'll have to come back for. We also briefly went shopping at Camping World but struck out on our quest for an RV-specific GPS system for Lincoln Hawk. Stay tuned for the conclusion of this journey and the big reveal of our new project boat, which we've been towing on golf cart tires behind Lincoln Hawk.
Check out www.Wirecare.com for more trick parts and tools for your project.

57 Chevy.

The fact that he is a roadkill fan makes this soooooo good
You need to give him a bunch of swag when you pick up the car.
@@davidw4586 100% ... what a legend!!
I WAS JUST COMING TO SAY THIS. LOL. OG fan at that.
He's feeding them with a project that he can watch them build online.
@@krusher74 you’re right. He’d definitely love to see updates
I think Newbern is crying at the end. That’s cool the yard owner would let you pick and complete as much as possible a car. Especially after saying only have one thing for sale.
Those are called happy tears
That is a rare example of REAL Southern Hospitality. You meet some people in the back woods that are just the kindest souls. Dickey is what we all should be!
And it's sweet that he's ACTUALLY restoring cars. He's sitting on a lot for sure, but he's actually working on a bunch too.
Tears thinking “I am never going to financially recover from this.”
The ' OL junkyard Dog trick of " only selling one thing- today only?
that's the happiest I've ever seen him
Dickie is the man when it comes to trifives. He’s built numerous cars and helped many people finish theirs including me . He’s a true wealth of knowledge and history. There’s nothing better than a Dickie built trifive.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Where is he located
@@soldierbenaiahisrael2747 near Big Spring Texas
@@jedau9220 what’s his shop name
This guy is truly awesome. These guys are getting very hard to find. 30 yrs ago,no big deal, now it's a real find.
@@jedau9220 I knew it had to be local but didn't know Dickie. I'm from down the road in Rotan.
I know this is two years ago, but Dicky is a great example of the "Greatest generation" ever. Stand up guy and very polite and honest. RIP.
Did he pass away?
watching dave at the end of this video reminds me of watching mike sit on a milk crate and just stare at blasphemi back when they were building it on roadkill. congrats on finding a great car and the happiness that brings.
That is so true! Good call!
But without the tears, and the weird euphemisms😂😂
What nice old guy. Need more people like him in the world
His laugh had me smiling and what an attitude "Square body suburbans can hold a hell of a lot of 57 parts!" Never change, Dicky!
Personality, yes. Hoarding, not so much. It's one thing to save old cars, but not great for the hobby when you choose to let half of them rot to nothing when there's countless guys that would give their left nut to restore them.
I have a 53 110 chevy I have to say I think they look nice with less trim really no other difference but not many people know that
What ? People who have great stuff that someone else would actually use but they won’t sell it and would rather let it rot away?? No thanks! I’d rather him be an asshole who would sell stuff
@@hydrocarbon8272 Yes , he's not a young man , best he sells most and cuts them loose to others.
Finnegan: "Some see patina, I see perfection". Other people say: "Patina is another word for 'needs paint'".
Yeah, all it needs is a supercharged LS3 with a manual transmission and a set of wheels.
Yeah I dont understand Patina... nothing beats a fresh coat of paint on a classic.
@@CheapSunglasses0 well patina tells a story of the car. its the charme.
This old guy is cool, he doesn't want to give you bad parts.
This is America. What a great experience. What a great score. And how fortunate we all are that you could document it for us. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Your wives will never let the two of you roadtrip together again with the amount of things you find along the way
Lol
I'm only 21 now but my goal in life is to be like dickie. The yard and the personality, he's an American classic for sure
I can’t believe what you did for newbern If I only had friends like that in my life. He’s so lucky to have a friend like you. Finnegan you are the best straight up wonderful man.
Not that he's not a good friend, but it's all good content for the channel that makes money too.
We need a Finnegan fleet rundown. I can't keep track of it all in my head any more.
Same here
@@XJlover90 i'll do that soon. i ran out of room at home so they aren't all in one place. and most of them dont run. lol
Yeah, I know how that is
I love the music montages! Also, Thanks for staying on CZcams. The content is awesome and a lot of us guys appreciate it 🤘
Glad you liked it!!

What was the name of that first country song, I wouldn't mind learning that one.
@@Paulman50 I want to know too, I tried googling the lyrics to no avail!
Receiving that ‘I fell in love again’ phone call was such GREATNESS!! But seeing how MINTY this car is when picking it up was THE BEST!!! We’re so pumped for you, Newbern!!
I am pumped for him too.
His goofy smile saying it too! Priceless
It sounded like he was talking to his wife, warming her up to tell her he's buying a car, and then I realized it was you and he was looking for a trailer and storage. LOL!!! We all help each other in this crazy old car hobby and that way we can save more and more. Be safe!
"MINTY" I think you got a little over-excited there!
@@krusher74 YOU try looking as good as that car at 64
Man thanks for the footage of the junkyard with the old man. I felt like I was there and there’s nothing I love more than a junkyard and listening to an ole hot rodder that knows his stuff.
Old fellas like that love nothing more than to show off their collections to people who appreciate them. Y'all made that dude's day
Agreed, he just wants to see someone that loves that old American Iron, like most American Patriots
Up next on Flying Sparks Garage, Emily and Aaron pick up Daves new project...
I love how Newbern turns into a kid in a candy shop when he starts seeing '57s.
Too bad there’s only one piece of candy!!
Them old gearheads like Dicky did us all a huge favor collecting and preserving them old cars. It is no wonder that they guard those treasures, if you can get them talking and prove that you feel the same way that they do they are quite generous as they want to see the younger generations continue on with that passion they have.
Our generation needs more Newbern’s, Finnegan’s, and jet boat gurus! I didn’t want this vid to end.
we'll keep on making them for ya.
@@FinnegansGarage I was hoping for the trifecta. I was hoping there was some “one of a kind” ramp truck in the back of his yard.
Im just starting out (at 32), curious to see where my personal documented car life videos go 😄 Fin it just killing it. Been addicted to Roadkill since the first episode, only grown from there.

How about a Faster With Finnegan episode?
Very good idea.
Hadn't heard that voice since I was a little kid. RIP Dickie
You guys probably made that old man's day walking and talking about his stuff lol
If I was Newbern, I'd be tearing up right then at the end. Allergies, yeah that's it. Allergies. *sobs*
Honestly, I think he was doing everything he could to hold back the tears! Nothing wrong with tears of joy and happiness! Made me happy to see him so happy. Tough to contain that level of happiness!

Now that's a good ol' boy making all our day! This best turn out to be an awesome project - thanks Dicky!

OMG another 57 Chevy! The only car ever made in the 1950s. Awesome!
Isnt this how most of us get our project cars? I have lost count over the decades how many times I dragged home whole cars when I just went to find a small part. The genuine excitement of the find far outweighs the reality of what you have just done and the explaining you will have to do later. To me this is the highlight of all projects - the discovery! I look forward to the next episode!
I know it's a boring detail, but thank you for the mic work, makes such a difference to the production. Great video guys.
I don't know how Mike and crew find the time to do such great editing, especially having families.
wearing the mics is a pain but i'm glad people are appreciating it. also, alot of the quality can be attributed to our new editor, chris read.
@@FinnegansGarage the time and effort to do good editing is insane. Thanks Chris!
Yes, the mics are great!
Mics are a significant improvement!
That old timer, just made me so happy to be a car guy. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
I am so happy you got to meet Dickie Lee. He was a great man - very knowledgeable about cars and understood people. Put together two cars with help of Mr. Jones, back in the early 90s. Wife's '57 station wagon and my '55 sedan. Big Spring was a regular haunt. Like hallowed ground for cars. If you need it for a tri-five, he pretty much would have had it. There used to be a picture of my '55 on his wall.
His wife Linda was one of the more charming women I've ever met. Saddened when I heard of his passing. RIP Dickie Lee! The Fin Doctor has left the building.
So you got the world's biggest square body hauler. And it STILL not big enough! Perfect find. This may be one of your best videos ever. Definitely top 10.
You know you're a petrol head when you go looking for parts and bring home a better car than the one you're buying the parts for.
I have done that more than once. Back in the day (mid eighties) I was hunting for a 4 speed for a 65 Mustang and came home with a 70 Nova with fresh paint. It was smoking out of one side. but still ran and drove.
Also done this. Went looking a set of wheels for an '88 Mitsubishi Starion I was V8 swapping, car was a little rough. Dude said I can't sell you wheels but I'll sell you the whole car. $300 later and I've got an entire spare parts car better than the one I was buying parts for...
I also did that back in the 80's when I was in highschool. Went to check out parts for a 58 Chevy. Ended up with a car minus engine and transmission that was straight, original paint and in way better condition than mine for $140.
When your project car becomes the parts car lol
I just did something similar last week buddy of mine told where a guy had some suzuki samurai. I went to buy a few parts, came home with 2 whole samurai. One of them ran within 10 minutes of getting it home.
When you get back to pick that car up, that old dude will have it stuffed with every good part you need PLUS, probably everything you need for your other car!!! He feels like that kinda guy since you weren't condescending or tried to get something for nothing, like probably every other body that tries to screw him over!!!

Damm kids and the axe... was a sad moment.
The junkyard owner IS a COOL dude !!!!
I will give Dave my wife. 2 kids and even my grandma for that 57
It's my dream car. My dad was born in 57. He and I only agreed on one thing. The 57 in ANY variant is the greatest car ever built. I would sell my soul to the devil to have a 57 (I live and Canada) and they don't survive up here. It's the one thing I see and always feel like my dad is with me.
F'n a Newbern. From 1 '57 fan to another, that's a hell of a deal! Can't wait to see these old girls rockin' the blacktop.
Newburn you rock mate. Shout out to Emily and Aaron as well for being awesome friends.
Finnegan's Garage is so good now I don't even bother watching motor trend anymore... Keep it up dude! 👌
I'll take Newbern over Freiberger any day. Nothing against Freiberger, I just don't find him as entertaining as 12 volt Dave.
Agreed, I've had way more enjoyment since Finnegan started his channel. I'm sure we aren't alone either. I started watching roadkill in the early days of it too. That's why Vice grip garage as exploded as well. People just want less scripted BS.
I dunno, I still love my mtod shows, but they need to focus more on what made the service viable, lately it’s mostly crap and they’re struggling to get RK universe shows out. No more extras... I dunno what they’re doing. They release RK episodes like every couple months... hopefully they get it sorted soon.
I pass this place every time I head to work! I’ve always wanted to stop but never have time. I’m glad someone finally did!
Old boy with all the 57's is the man. If you happen to read this comment...fine effort sir.
Dave is almost beyond words. I know the feeling. In 2010 I dragged a 65 Nova wagon from Ohio to Michigan's UP. 2 years later I stripped it. For the next 7 years it sat in a body shop doing nothing. Next month I will get to drive it. I can't sleep until then.
I see you don't have any videos. I'd love to watch a first drive clip!
This is reality, as opposed to those reality car shows. There's still cars out there, and people willing to sell them for a reasonable price. You just gotta do the work to find 'em.
If a guy is willing to get through the 999 "It ain't fer sale, I'm gonna fix 'er someday." to get that 1 "Wife is tired of looking at it, so it's time for it to go to a good home." you can indeed find a good deal.
Watching Newborn almost cry almost made me cry!!
Dave looked like he was emotional there at the end. But we know that feeling brother. When you can walk out and just stare at your car and be happy.
Damn, If those cars could talk. Imagine the stories and adventures they took with the caretakers.
True
story’s of being drove to the grocery store
Backwoods parties, drag races and some back seat fun, I bet.
I always try to imagine what it would’ve been like on the showroom floor, or Maybe at the dealership when somebody was buying them new. Those cars would have a whole lot of stories to tell.
This trip has been the best thing on CZcams this year!!
It's not even over. Next one they'll probably buy some more boats. I'm predicting one or two follow up trips.
But have you seen the 2jz simplicity mower?
Gy
And he let his guard down because he recognized you and was a fan thats awsome because he knows it will live again and it will no longer be yard art i love it
When registered as rv you are no longer a truck. I drive a semi pulling giant custom fifth wheel for owner. The look on their faces when you go thru non truck lines and tell them to look at what’s painted on side of sleeper “ registered as private recreational vehicle” priceless. Driving solo had police come after me skipping weigh station. They run tag and read lettering and just wave and leave. Drove passed The Thong Sunday and Monday. Love the videos.
Seeing Newbern crying is real, love ya brother l get that feeling when you adopt a steel baby, good for you!
Me noticing video title --> Interesting
Me seeing who posted the video --> Makes sense

Could that random roadside stop be more perfect. What a top old bloke.
If dickie is a fan of Roadkill, you gotta do an episode build in his yard, talk to him about his story, and pay him some good money for the show for his collection and knowledge over the years. How could he not love that?
Mike is such a bad influence, Dave never stood a chance. He can hardly speak at the end of the video. Living a dream
Words to live by: “Always take the off ramp”. Love it! Congrats on the new family member. Haha
This might be my favorite episode so far. At first I was like "picking out hitch locks at Camper World....yawn." Then you pulled over at the '57 yard. Your genuine enthusiasm for cars shines through and is contagious! You guys treated Dickey with respect and got respect in return. You guys are the real deal and that's why people flock to this channel. Keep up the great work.
Roadkill is so great! From camping world and giving a well deserved shout out
One cheekah and 57s
Reminds me of when I was a kid. 200 acres of cars, and the old guy would tell me where all the parts were that would fit my mustang, for peanuts. Best days ever.
Had a place like that near where I lived in TX. I bent a tie rod end on my Mach 1 and couldn't afford a new one so I asked the old boy that owned the place if he had one and he pointed at a coupe and said "That one. Whatever you can get off there, you can have for free." Looking back, he probably figured that the work to get anything off that car was worth its value. In the hot Texas sun with only basic sockets, etc and a whole lotta elbow grease, I walked away with a trunk full of miscellaneous stuff (master cylinder w/booster, alternator, brackets, suspension parts, electrical connectors, lightbulbs, you name it) and he got his satisfaction making a dumbass kid work for every part. We need more of that.
i so miss junkyards with actual cool, old cars in them not all modern plastic SHIT.
had to be 25-30 years ago ,every junkyard in my area got rid of everything pre 1990.
what a sad fucking day that was, cash for clunkers also fucked all car enthusiests
Killer job, man y'all walked out with tons of parts, I fell in love with Dicky's hot rod dang it man.
Rescuing cars from people who would likely just let them rust until they die, is the absolute best thing ever!
That beige and white Suburban is IDENTICAL to my old one!!
If you're looking for a "big rig" GPS, consider the Garmin "Diesel" unit.
It's made specifically for big trucks, and will guide you around low
bridges, weight restrictions, etc. And will most likely get you where
you want to go.
thanks for the tip.
It's cool to know ever the Senior crowds enjoy your shows!!!
Best Road Trip EVER!!! Congrats Newbern!!!
On a hot Rod power tour in Somerset Kentucky we struck up a conversation with a young person and it sounded like he had some 57 nomads. We took off that evening and went to his home on his garage he had painted 57 heaven around his home was at least a dozen tri five Chevy's. Then he took us to his mothers home where there were sheds full of tri five Chevy's. It's totally amazing what you find out if you talk to people and as outlandish as his story sounded I remember thinking he's not full of BS. We had a day like you had in this Video I will never forget never.
I'm so glad you're doing this on CZcams. Ever since MotorTrend syndicated I can't access it from NZ.

That's is roadtripping at it's best. I think everyone following would love the experience of being on a roadtrip with you guys. I live in Holland and since I was a kid I want to visit the US and take a roadtrip. This is the next best thing. Thank you for sharing this with us and taking us with you. Greetings from Holland
I could sit there and talk to that old man all day
I'd even take a wagon! A lot of good they're doing just sitting there. Remember, Georgia may not get a lot of snow, but they get rain coming down in sheets, not to be confused with all of the hail that kills roofs.
I love how us car guys get so excited over such piles lol only we can see the potential in a turd.

Just like Newbern said... throw parts at it to get it driving... 7 days. Gauntlet thrown.

Awesome score for real, you guys seriously lucked out
If you guys get a truck gps get a Garmin 785 dezl I use all the time I drive trucks all day long and it does everything I need it to do. It has a dash cam I think you can add a backup camera. If you are gonna spend the money spend it on something good at least garmin

Newbern, you live a Charmed life, road tripping this great country of ours, and finding so many copies of the only car I regret trading away. A 1957 Chevy BelAir hard top. Looking forward to seeing a restoration. Make it a daily driver, cruiser
We had an old junk yard like that out here in UT and the old man that ran it was an amazing person. Would just randomly show up out there and hang out with him, walk through the yard and look at the cars, don't think there was anything newer that a late 60. Land had been in his family for like 100 years, city came in because he has all the water rights in the area and ran him out so they could build garbage homes. Came in and took inventory on what he had and wouldn't let him sell any of the cars. It's a sad day when we lose places like this so I'm glad to see them still out and around.
That man has a yard full of gold. Beautiful and amazing find. He should move them away from the highway so people dont bug him. It's only gonna get worse as time goes on and they get even rarer.
He won’t be around forever, gotta sell them sometime. No sense in just letting it all rot

1 of the coolest episodes yet! David was a kid in a candy shop. His excitement, you can't help but get excited to. That's awesome, thank you.
I love the fact he calls Emily from flying sparks garage and ask to Barrow her truck and trailer!!!!!
You gotta finish that car as quick as possible and take it back for a visit with that old guy
That old timer was cool. And he had some great cars. Let's hope he let you guys do a Roadkill episode where you build one and drive it out of there..
Glad to see another one saved from just rusting away!
Good things happen to good people...
„Always use the off ramp and never just go down the highway!“ 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This guy’s collection is legit. What a cool dude, got a story for every car I’m sure. Wish more people were willing to show off their old 50s and 60s parts and pieces
As a Brit my fav motors are all sitting in that man's yard and they are wonderful
Wow that car is such a great find. Its got so many little details that are actually in great shape, like a lot of the chrome/trim/bumpers. This man has a million dollar collection sitting there and it's really cool that you guys were able to work something out. This is gonna be a super cool project in the future to see unfold.
I watch fin and love his channel cuz it haz that road kill feel but I don't have to pay money like motor trend now wants to watch ,I can learn stuff and be entertained, and doesn't require me to sign up for anything or pay for anything keep up the good work fin!
Dad memories today, he restored a '40 Special Deluxe coupe 40 years ago when I was about 10, 2 tone silver, 283 and Powerglide on Corvette Rally rims, chocolate interior, not fast but it sounded great and it was by far the coolest to me. The other memory involves bad glass, my Dad took me for an evening cruise in his '59 Vette, and upon turning into the sun we were immediately blinded by the bad original windshield. A bit of polishing compound and some even coverage with a basic polisher and its 100 times better. Awesome vid!
Haha, I'm a Chevy man too... down here in New Zealand.
Happening upon a yard like that is a dream for us all.
But what I love most is the last couple minutes of this video where Newbern is making solid plans for his 2 new '57 aquisitions.
"Yeah mate, that's how they all start".
Best of luck buddy.
You look like a kid on Xmas day.
