Disaster! I Bought a Big Rig Semi and It's Already Broken!

- On episode 150 of Finnegan's Garage, Mike Finnegan bids farewell to his giant ramp truck, Lincoln Hawk. After recent road trip he discovered that there wasn't enough room in the engine compartment to swap a bigger diesel engine into the truck, which meant he didn't have enough power to tow the trailer he had just bought. So, he sold the big red chevy kodiak square body ramp truck and bought a 2004 Freightliner FL112 semi converted into an RV by a company called Showhauler.
This video is about the purchase and first road trip in the truck, which ended in disaster when the onboard freshwater storage tank leaked 75 gallons of water into the interior of the Toterhome, ruining the carpet and wood floor. Don't worry, we are well on our way to repairing the truck in anticipation of a cross-country drag boat road trip!

Hey Mike, I'm in Bowdon Ga and I build skoolies, school busses converted to RV's. Bring that toter to my garage and I'll get you fixed up
Make this be seen by him!!!
That is cool. We are in Douglasville. Just bought a Bluebird bus and plan to do a skoolie with it.
What can you do for a gutted Avion?
Hell yeah, this is the kind of thing I like to see. Dudes helping other dudes. Good stuff, @Jack W.!

It's especially difficult to do without sounding patronising, something which Mike manages well👍
The tank is inside so the water dont freeze in cold conditions.
I was going to say the same thing
i was just going to type that lol its also why the tank is plastic because rvs in winter that are just parked freeze inside too lol
If the units have not been properly Winterized it will still freeze . Especially if the unit was sitting for period of time
Exactly!
@@newluck365 my brother, a certified welder and hobby blacksmith, by no means a dummy; is not a mechanic. By any stretch of the imagination. He changed a heater hose on his truck, a 91 F-250 with a mechanical 7.3 in it, thought he got him the deal of the decade on antifreeze. He filled his truck with RV antifreeze. It got hot, boiled like hell, and when it cooled it turned to a pinkish orange goo that took a week to get all flushed out. Not a good decision...

I know! Isn't it so sad! Just brings tears to my eyes. Get rid of that motorhome style plug and go to seven way ICC wiring. And get a power probe and learn how to use it. I'm laughing cuz as a truck mechanic for 42 years I've been chasing shorts all my life. Good thing I was good at it. We had a saying in the shop: " electrical problems can be very hard to find!" No flat rate! Time on the ticket baby!
As a owner operator dont think they have any ida what there doing who let's water run out & make it worse that just top it for me!
When you install the new tank just put a pan under it with a hose that can run somewhere else so if it does ever leak again it wont ruin the floor.
I was thinking the same thing
I can’t wait to see what truck you are going to be driving a month from now.
Consider putting the new tank in a pan with a drain to the outside, similar to hot water tanks placed in attics or indoor spaces. Good luck.
yeah make an aluminum pan to go under it with a drain, water tanks will sometimes sweat too. 2 birds 1 stone.
GREAT Idea!! With the bung on the side and a short pipe to outside they'd see it leaking right away...
Great idea
@@leetalon8770 to quote another CZcamsr that’s getting two bird’s stoned at once
Should have been in a pan from the builder. Not sure who's oversight that was.
A tank that large should be baffled or it's intended for static/stationary use. That's possibly one of the reasons it cracked.
Yeah It is not recomended to have full tanks when traveling with your RV/TODER/WHATEVER.
To add to what I said.. Get yourself a food grade hose and a filter to go onto the end of it to replenish the tank. Don't use just a normal garden hose unless you like funny tastes, bacteria, and god knows what else going into your tank that you'll ultimately consume. When stored tanks should be either totally empty or completely full to reduce algae and bacteria growing. Clear tanks exposed to light also increase both growing. That tank just didn't look fit for purpose.
I can't for the life of my understand why you guys didn't dump the tank the second you figured out it was leaking? Wouldn't have taken 15 minutes to empty.
I was thinking the same thing!!

Hey, couple things to check on that engine since they don't tend to hit the dealership too often. If it's a egr 4000 There's a egr probe that was removed and plugged due to it breaking off and taking the engine out. Also coolant leaks on the passenger side of the engine are pretty common but if slow enough will dry on the side and not hit the ground so something to keep an eye on

Maybe toss a drip pan under that thing with a tiny hose feeding under the truck, like in the corner of sun/moon roofs where they put catch trays in the corner and feed the hose out the fenders by the rear tires as a just incase the tank fails in the future thing

The joy of buying a used RV/toters. You are buying a used truck, and a used house all in one package. Huge upkeep on both. It was a beating for one guy to upkeep RV, trailer, race car, 2 scooters and still work a 45 hour real job. No wonder I quit that stuff once I got older.
Should have used flex seal on that tank! 😂
“Pro tip”- when emptying the black and grey water tanks. Empty the black water first and use the grey water to flush the hose. Also, keep an eye on the roof. Inspect it regularly, and keep an eye out for leaks.
Along with the rubber seal for the slide-out.
THAT'S A LOT OF DAMAGE!

There are no bad decisions. There are just days when you learn more than usual.
Back in 2004, "some" RV manufactures were still putting the water tanks inside the unit. One advantage to that is all the plumbing can be kept warmer when using the rig in the winter. Now a days all water tanks are under trailer. Some have arctic packages, some have a heat pad (12 volts) that keep the water from freezing to a point. To keep the water lines on newer RV trailer flowing, the furnace will have a duct for the water line area. So under the trailer you have a 6" -12" void between the frame bottom and the inside floor. So that is where your in floor heating ducts, water lines and fresh, gray and blacks are.
i love how there are so many comments giving advice. what a lovely community u have Finnegan.
Lucky for you, whenever you rip up all the carpet you can replace it with laminate hardwood. That way you can ride around with a swiffer and not a vacuum
Yep. We took the carpet out of the 5th wheel and put in laminate flooring. It was a mobile construction office as well as living space. It was an obvious choice.
@@mckrackin5324 if you’re on a budget and think you’ll want to change it in ten years anyway. Just go laminate🤷♂️
I don’t think their has ever been a used trailer that has been sold with fully working lights or electrical
Having bought and sold at least 16 trailers i will confirm this but they left with lights working great
Hahahahaha!
My parents though they bought a trailer with crap wiring as the running lights were sporadic and one turn signal didn't work and the other was to the wrong direction.
Too bad everything worked correctly when I plugged the trailer to my crappy '97 Volvo, where the trailer plug probably wasn't used in 10 years.
Their 8 year old mercedes had the shittiest trailer connector I've ever seen.
I got around that by buying a new one! Three weeks later - flash flood completely inundated it and ruined pretty much everything except the air in the tires.
MIKE!! If there's ONE thing you NEED to know about CZcams... You can shoot your video with a potato, as long as you've got GREAT audio, the visuals don't matter as much... BUT you HAVE to have great audio!!
Finnegan I LOVE the Ashley Shaffer WHOOO you put in while describing the power of the toterhome.... EAST BOUND AND DOWN ROCKS
Finnegan, there are 2 different standard wiring sequences for bladed 7-wire connections. I'm betting the "toterhome" is wired in "RV" configuration, and the trailer is in "Utility" configuration. My solution would be add a second 7-wire, allowing for both, "RV," and "Utility" wiring configurations, so you always have the right connection for whatever trailer you pull. Also, 7-PIN wiring is different from both 7-wire configurations, which you could also add, just in case it's ever needed.
Add fender mirrors, and you'll be able to see the trailer when turning. Makes things much easier and safer when turning and backing with a trailer.
Would it be possible to wire the toter as "utility" then make a short pigtail adapter to convert to "RV" standard?
@@gordonbowe it would, but a loose piece like that is just another thing that can get lost. If you're going to be towing random trailers often, there's sense in adding additional sockets by the receiver, labeled with their wiring.
wow that sounds fun, over here in the uk all 12v (car/light commercial) are 12n 7 pin (or 13 pin euro thats easy to adapt) and 24v heavy commercial is 24n. everything that is wired differently or different voltage has a different plug/socket so they cannot be plugged in to something that isnt wired to match
If the truck ever pulled a horse trailer, it will be wired wrong.
Of course there’s 2 different configurations. Why would they be the same when they can be different. 🤔
Next week on Finnegan’s garage... I just started my own trucking company
Get yourself a truck GPS to use in the rig. Garmin and Rand McNally make some good units. Last thing you want is to get on a weight restricted road or stuck under a low bridge.
Welcome to the wonderful world of RVs! It is like a cabin cruiser on wheels, sorta. You have a lot of systems all built by different companies. Thermostat is for the furnace - A/C is completely separate. Make sure you winterize the water system with the special pink antifreeze, or you will crack lots of expensive things.
Hey Finn,,,,put in a alumin water tank. You'll have problems with plastic, they cant take the slossing of the water without baffles. Been there, dun dat.
He should build his own tank to put in there. Aluminum is cheaper than wood right now, so he can fix the floor if also needed.
Except aluminum and chlorinated water don’t play nice together!
I recommend Florida Marine Tanks, now located in NC. When I needed a replacement fresh water tank for my 1977 vintage sailboat which they had originally made, they had the original blueprints and delivered me a replacement in three weeks.
With an aluminum tank be very careful what you put into it. Always use an in-line filter for salts and other minerals. Sometimes you can get away with real city water, but never with untreated or especially not softened well water.
Some boaters winterize their systems with the pink, non-toxic antifreeze. Others just pump their tanks dry and blow out the lines with air. Some, on the other hand, after taking out as much water as possible just put in about five gallons of forty proof vodka and have a spring cleaning party.
and to think this all started with the OG roadkill ramp truck
I know your a busy guy, your skill as a fabricator and mechanic aren't in doubt, I would have really enjoyed watching a series on the old rig being upgraded to do the job you need. It's a hard gamble if CZcams money makes the financial difference worth the work , but your new rig is awesome and definitely something that would be a lot easier to get down the road with
Famous last words of almost every seller 'Worked fine for me'.
When you install the new tank, get/fabricate a tray with a drain like for home hot water tanks. That way, should this happen again, it will drain outside and you can fix it whenever instead of wrecking the interior. Don't forget a one-way valve on the drain so vapors don't make their way back into the cab. Make the tray big enough to cover under the pump too.
I just wrote the same thing, we had the same idea haha
That's a really smart idea
I was thinking why don't Finnegan just build an aluminum tank
2nd'd and/or 3rd'd. On our race trailer we have a 100 gallon tank directly above the front lounge, but the tank, pump, and water heater have an aluminum tray which drains outside the trailer.
Exactly my thinking.
I’m all about supporting bad decisions
When you said you were going to look at a trailer, I was going to suggest an ATC, nice choice! Bummer about the water leak! Dry out the wood, paint Kilz on it and then install some vinyl plank flooring instead of carpet.
As soon as I saw Finnegan's face, after finding the leaking tank, smashed that like and subscribe button!! The dude needs our support.

Have you considered putting down cork flooring? It's comfortable underfoot, antimicrobial, easy to clean (but also doesn't show any dirt quickly) and is a sustainable material. Plus, it's quiet and it looks great! We used cork flooring in one of our campers and loved it!
When you get a new tank or repair the old ,get some thick latex sheeting to lay it on .as it looks like it's rubbed through. That will protect it and insulate it .
Install a drip tray with a drain to outside in case of another failure.
That's thinkin
Very good idea. These two have the skills to make one from just about anything and install it back in the vehicle. Laying a plywood floor and carpet are the easiest thing in that vehicle to do lol.
Five batteries and not one of them on an isolated circuit for starter-/engine use only? That has gotta be the first modification together with having the onboard generator being able to charge the batteries.
An engine that size it will take probably 2 of those batteries to actually be able to start it and in winter (not problem for Georgia but if he ever goes north on a road trip) it will take 4 if not all 5 just for starting. I'm sure the generator has an alternator but it's not set up as an APU to start based on battery potential.
The generator keep the batteries maintained while the batteries are mainly used for starting and lighting and are also charged via the engine
One battery is for the generator most likely
Truck itself uses 4 batteries
@@joshp.2237 They use 24 volt starters.
@@ezacher4634 No, 24 volt systems are mainly in the heavy equipment industry. While not impossible it is very improbable that his truck is 24 volt. To my knowledge pre 2000 they started phasing out 24 volt stuff in this industry and by the time we make it to full electronic engine controls they are all 12 volt
Big fan of the channel. Speaking of fans, if you replace your roof vents with Fan-Tastic Roof Vents, you will not regret it. Most roof vents have a tiny little fan that just stirs air around. Fan-Tastic has a fully shrouded fan that is nearly the size of the opening and a super efficient 12v motor. A couple of other brands also do similar things, but I have never been disappointed in the Fan-Tastic.

Good luck the project lads.. keep the content coming.
Something I just learned with my enclosed trailer, there is a different pin/color for the 7pin depending on if it is a RV or common trailer. It kicked my butt until I figured that out the night before my first early trip with it...
Also just do a metal pan under the tank like a water heater tank with a drain out the floor. Keep the tank inside due to freezing.
All the trailers I have used have had the 7 blade rv plug, including our dump trailer and my toyhauler and other 5th wheels and camping trailers. The other style is a round pin, so the only way it would be a problem is if you were using the wrong diagram for what you have, or someone changed out one type for the other and didn't reorder the wires to match the plug. A metal pan is a good idea. My water tank is 100 gallons and sits under the trailer and it never froze in the SoCal mountains where it only got down to 20 degrees.........I camped all of 2020 in the mountains for a job. Other places, with colder temps is could certainly freeze. I did add heating pads to the bottom of my gray and black tanks and wrapped the drain pipes with heat tape and also ran a dripper on the cold water winterizing port so that water would circulate from the campground faucet through my trailer and then out on the ground, keeping it from freezing.
What you have there is a first gen automatic you only need the clutch to stop and take off and go from neutral to drive or reverse
Now you can customize it the way you want.
Put some nice tile maybe some lighter color wood flooring. Through some sound mats down. Make it fun 🤩

Welcome to the wonderful world of RV ing. It’s never ending !
Welcome to the wonderful adventure of RVING!!!!!
Yeah, it will always be like this in some way.
Never fails that the plug on a trailer is wired the wrong way.
You can fix the wiring and then the next time you take it out it's wired wrong again.... I think there are trailer wiring gremlins who if you don't use the trailer for 3 months change things on you.
I used to run into that problem, then I looked up the proper wiring schematic...
There are 3 different 7-wire configurations. Both "RV" and "Utility configurations use the bladed connectors, but different wiring layouts. A 7-PIN connector is both a pin style connector, and a different wire sequence from the other two. The best thing to do is have 2 bladed 7-wire connections, so you connect the trailer to the one that works, instead of having to mess with rewiring things.
Prior owner of a trailer drove a pickup with stacks in bed of his pickup didn't know the proper standard way of plug wiring so he wired it to match way he wired his truck plug. There is a STD wiring to ALL trailer plugs. Um unless your a DIY person who just wires things however ya feel.
you go through tow rigs like thanos collecting the infinity stones.
27:12 I imagine it has been mentioned a lot but... The "why" is temperatures below freezing. You put it in the living space, and if it's below freezing outside, you keep the living space above, and you have water.
Pro tip: install a low point drain when you re do the water tank.
Of course it's broken, it's a Freightliner 🤣🤣
At least you can laugh at all the "issues" and that's a good thing, cuz setting fires is frowned upon, God bless you both!!!
Nice rig, all things considered 🙂 The cab appears to be derived from the European LN2 - which over here in metric Blighty was fitted in cabover form to medium-weight trucks from 8-14 metric tonnes max permitted weight, and a handful of fire tenders. It never saw much more than 210bhp here, so it always amuses me that it grew a hood and ended-up behind decent power in the US 😁
I thought the doors looked like 814 doors.
I'm not throwing stones. (I've owned 80+ vehicals) but you might want to hang on to stuff long enough to fix the problem. I hope you have better luck with the Mercedes Diesel than othere I know.
Sometimes the problem is that the truck is too small, and the solution is to get a bigger truck.
The wife must've been like "I could swear the truck was red last time I saw it."
Just cleaned it honey... that's all 🙄😉🤣
Mmm...there was the red one, another red one, a couple white ones, a green one...she'd have better luck trying to remember all his project cars.
So I ride horses for a living so I live in my toted for 6 months of the year.
1st thing check your roof, make sure you seal it up tight, dicore is your friend don't be shy.
2 water heater, check your diode and flush it, btw the switch you asked about is for your water heater, check your electric heating element while you are in there.
Most water tanks are in the cab so they don't freeze when it gets cold. I suggest trying to fit the largest fresh tank you can mine has 150 gallons under our bed.
The tech refresh is really easy to do in these, I put a 42 inch oled in the main area, I also put in a traveller sat dish, I chose the dish one since you can pay month to month.
While refreshing I would replace your microwave with an convection oven/microwave.
If you don't have it already I would highly recommend putting a grill in the lower compartment so you can make stuff when at the track. We Also have an outdoor fridge in ours that we use alot aswell but is not as needed as the grille.
Replace all the lighting for led, Casper sells a good bed topper for the cab over that makes it much nicer to sleep on.
Your tank read outs will read accurately if you flush and clean them out, aka grey and black.
Depending on your budget you should really look into a lithium/solar setup or at least go agm on your house batteries.
Last but not least service service your AC the colemans are the best but make sure to lubricate your fan motors ect.
Also buy a cheap dehumidifier to run when the toter is not in use, try to tender it as much as possible to help the batteries last as long as they can. If there isn't already a whole coach shutoff you should add one so the batteries don't drain when it is parked and you forget to turn something off.
Love the new truck. Replace that floor with something hard wearing simple to clean with just a broom and a rag.
Stick some under floor heating in there.

Get a tank with all openings, pickups on the top so you wont have leak points below water level. We ordered one 1.5” shorter with all pick ups coming off the top and had an A/C company form up a pan to go beneath it and installed a drain that came out below the outside water taps so if it started leaking we would see it before it became an issue. Nice set up you have now and you get a chance to make it how you want it in the end now too lol
Some RV's like mine have a valve and tee at the water pump inlet and outlet towards the fresh water system. When you are hooked up to fresh water (like at a RV park) you can open this valve, and the fresh water tank can be filled. But be careful not to overfill the tank. My fresh water tank is under the rear bed, so it is indoors, so if you camp in 20F weather, the tank will not freeze. The furnace will keep everything warm. Under the couch is the normal location for most RV's.
I also replaced my low output pump with a variable speed pump, and it works great for a higher pressure shower. You might want a outdoor shower. My RV has a outdoor shower fitting near the tank dump valves, in the basement storage, so my drain tanks are in the basement, with a furnace vent going into that area, so they "Claim" that I could camp in -20F weather, as long as I run the furnace a lot, I can keep the tanks above freezing. BTW, the black water tank gets some TP on the sensors, and will normally read full or 3/4 full. It is nearly impossible to overfill the black tank, so don't worry about the tank reading full when it is actually empty. Yes I have camped for 3 weeks in my RV, and never overfilled the black water tank.

I used to be an engineering intern at ATC - they make great trailers.
Just a tip there is a water drain valve to drain the tank on to the ground so you didn't need to let it leak out in the Toter. And don't put carpet back in. Use water proof laminent flooring this will help with clean up after trips and when your roof starts to leak because it will.
I wouldn't use laminate I would use LVT flooring that is waterproof. For those who aren't in the biz LVT stands for luxury vinyl tile. Dont use the click LVT, it's a floating floor, you need to use the glue down LVT in your luxury Rig.
Why didn't they turn on shower and sink to help drain the tank
Water tank should have a drain system on it
Because all that would go into the grey water tank. Would still have to be drained. 😁
@@eldonerc2524 Still wouldn't have been in the floor.
@@eldonerc2524 right but would be contained in the tank not leaking all over right?
"The struggle bus" would be a great name for the toter. Fits it perfectly.
I thought he said "Snuggle Bus". I was ready to hit "stop" at a moments notice.
Band called good sex out of chicage. Has a party bus they bring to events festival type . called the struggle bus. Has dj setup inside dance floor on tge roof. Its bad ass

Then it needs a wrap to make it actually look like a bus. LMFAO
When you replace the tank put a catch pan with a drain underneath it, so if it does leak, the water has a way to the outside without ruining anything.
Great purchase
A used motorhome is like a boat with wheels they leak anywhere they can,on the bright side at least you can't sink😁
But apparently, like a used boat, they fill full of water anyway.
only fiscally
So, you would drive this down the boat ramp with the expectation it will float?
