- Part 2 of 3: I push this classic 1956 Buick Special forward some 600 miles into the 1200 mile trip home, but am slowed by multiple break downs and issues. Along the route, I swing into the historic "Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum" for a quick after-hours tour of their impressive collection. Then - time to assess the damage and plan. I'm half way home, now what? Turn around? Have it shipped? Watch and find out!

When “exploring the country in an old car” you get to see a lot more, every small town with a parts store.
I used to know every small town between Houston and Dallas when I was in college. Then I started buying cars that ran.
Accurate
That's part of the fun
Yes, you really experience Americana in an old car that likes to break down every so often. Builds character.

Fella pushed the car he's been tracking down 10 years to the breaking point to show us that museum. What a guy. Thanks Derek for the videos
He’s a legend in his own lifetime.
He puts on a good show. Seems like a natural at it. Doesn't hurt that the topic in this one is a Beautiful car, besides.

I live by Tulsa wish I was there that day to meet a feller that would have been great
Am I the only fella who loves the highway cruisin time-lapse bits with the musicals playing?
Reminds me a bit of my 199something trip from Virginia to Texas in a 1960 Thunderbird. Got out of the Navy and decided to drive the Thunderbird rather than ship it. Took mostly back highways, one of the best trips I’ve ever had. The car didn’t give me one moments trouble. No cell phone or GPS, just a Rand-McNally atlas. I think the Bird averaged about 14 miles per gallon. She’s still with me, 30 years later.
Who here wouldn't offer Derek a bed to sleep in or a ride to a parts store if he came through your town with an old girl in need?
Id do it in a heartbeat and even lend my shop to work in
Oh right away I wouldn't have any second thoughts about it he gives off a genuinely honest and stand up person that I would let him use my garage or car to get her done.
Yeah, when I saw that Zed-28, I said ol' Derek is in luck here comes another car guy.... I guess he doesn't know "guy code" rule # 19 - hood up, stop and help

I've been watching this channel for a long time and I really have to say that Derek gets my feels all worked up. A guy genuinely appreciates cars and we need more of that.
I remember seeing people clunk corvettes when cash for clunkers was a thing. I was heart broken.
People need to realize that the amount of work that went into these cars makes them worth keeping around. If more of us fixed stuff instead of throwing it away and blowing money on new stuff that doesn't work as well...
I need a cold snack. Thanks Derek. Keep making content. It's inspirational.
Thanks for the kind words
Yep, you are 100% correct, if you watch "rainman Ray" wrench on all the different. "new" cars, well, I'm keeping my old cars, my newest is my wife's daily, a 1997 awd Ford explorer with a 302, it's WAY good enough!!!

i think part of owning a car like that is driving it. it's not a good idea to take a car like that, that has sat for probably 10 years and drive it 1,200 miles without extensively going through it first.

Yeah...nothing like a sharp stick in the eye.
I had a 1953 chevy bel air that was the same yellow and white as your buick was originally. It also had a vapor lock problem. An old mechanic gave me this trick. Clip several wooden spring clothespins to the fuel line right there where you were pointing. I don't know why this worked.. but it did. I never had another problem with vapor lock.

My Dad had a 56 Buick Special. 2 tone green. He used a 180° summer thermostat & a 195° winter thermostat. He never had overheating issues. We even pulled an old homemade holiday trailer that was very heavy. He drove about 50-60 mph on the hiways. Maybe slow down & enjoy the scenery. Vapor lock was a bit of an issue too. An electric fuel pump will help that a lot. He used to get about 22-24mpg hiway. About 15mpg around town. The old cars were designed to go about 60mph on the hiways. Nice road trip I'd like to make some time.

Overheating on the highway usually means radiator is clogged. Ram air cools engine at speed, fan cools at idle/low speeds. Place your hand on the cooling fins down low and see if it’s cool, while the top area is hot. Pump blades may be rusted off, causing lack of flow. Seeing the freeze plugs missing, makes me wonder about the condition of the pump blades.
