- I'm making a bowl out of Spanish chestnut... without a lathe. Here's my submission for Keith Brown's (from Rag n' Bone Brown) Bowl Without a Lathe Challenge #BWALC - thank you Keith for setting this up, great fun little woodworking project and not made out of MDF for once! I've made my bowl out of Spanish chestnut - this is from a local tree in Northumberland that a friend of mine cut down. I used the Saburrtooth carving wheel for my angle grinder. Here's a few links to products I've used:

Haha, the opening skit was hilarious!!! 😆 Love the bowl, it turned out fantastic. I'll have to get me one of those do-nut wheels too. Thanks for sharing your methods and ideas and for participating - brilliant video
Ha cheers Keith! Luckily had the do-nut wheel from another project - expensive but works really well. Hopefully it will last! Still seems pretty sharp. 👍🛠
Excellent make as always Mr Gosforth
Thank you dude! 👍👍
I understand about the time it takes to carve out a bowl. I once made a small dish out of walnut that was very hard. But in the end it got done. Very nice work.
Great stuff - thank you! 👍🛠
Those discs are neat .I use them a lot . You did a nice job on your piece of wood. Thanks for sharing.
Love the humour and relaxed style . . . 47 years later . . LOL. . . . Subscribed :-) The bowl is stunning.
Cheers Maria - welcome to the channel! 👍
Nice job Andy. Looks great. I like your joke at the start. 😀
Cheers Adrian! 👍🛠
Very Nice Andy!!!
Cheers Kevin! 👍
Really enjoyed that mate. Nice work
Cheers bud! 👍🛠
Nice job Andy.
Cheers Kooky! 👍🛠
Nice job Andy a lot of work.
Cheers Michael! 👍🛠
Mate, that's brilliant! I bet that MDF bowl survived the drop though 😂👍
Lol - not a mark on it! 😂
Gosforth Handyman love it; makes a change from mdf. 😀
Obviously made with love and care. 😂
When you were finishing the bowl it looked like a loaf of bread, and the live end reminded me to have steak tomorrow belting mate
Ha ha - cheers Keith! 👍
Really cool project.
Cheers bud! 👍🛠
I have been away this weekend, I watched your submission on my phone and rolled around the motor-home floor watching your spoof submission. Mrs was impressed and she don't like the sound of wood being cut, drilled, sawn and sanded on my pc....hilarious matey... reminded me so much of all my "daft" Geordie mates i used to work with.. (that is a massive compliment btw)... Cheers Paul
Ha ha - cheers bud! 😂👍🛠
Came out so great, awesome work!
I found that if you soak the live edges in thinned poly before you work on it they stay on better.
Amazing work
Cheers Jacob! 👍🛠
what a beautiful tray
BOWL! 😂😂
ok hope your,s wins
Great recovery from the mishap with the joiner! And a lovely outcome as well!
Thank you! 👍🛠
Lol, first time noticing your "dust collection" on the planer! Great aim :D
Doesn't always work like that... 😂👍
Looks great, not unlike a old wooden bread dough bowl. Nice work
Cheers Michael! 👍
In Poland we have name for such kinde of bowl: kopańka, was made for kneading bread dough.
I had to make several in life, and adze is best tool for this job. Maybe turbo plane or chainsaw can be saft for rawing but im not sure.
Interesting - cheers Jan! 👍🛠
Lots of hard work there Andy. Not sure I’d have had the patience you had to carve it out, but the angle grinder blade was a neat solution.
And 3 year later your changes to Wikipedia have moved a bit but are still there, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl so Bowl’s clearly can be rectangular as well as Wikipedia says so!
Looks great. I also enjoyed the functionality of the MDF bowl.
Ha ha - cheers Matt! 👍😀
Wait... You changed the definition of "bowl" on Wikipedia?!!? **bows to the Master**
Lol... where there's a will... 😀👍
It's still there saying normally round but can be square or rectangular a month later. I have to agree. (Also bows).
Bl...y brilliant Andy, I enjoyed this bit of fun and even learnt something new, putting sandpaper around a tennis ball to get that nice inside curve, well done thanks 👍👍👍
Cheers bud! 👍👍
Love how the chips come out when you're thicknessing.
brilliant and the wiki edit pure genius and exactly what I would have done myself
Cheers Andy - if the project doesn't meet spec... just change the spec. 😂👍
This is so pretty. Love the bowl stencil. Looks like it was burned in.
Clever stuff! Have a good weekend.
Cheers Mark - and you! 👍
If it's on Wikipedia then it must be true.
Great job Andy..the caulked mdf bowl is better than I could do 😂
Ha ha - the caulk was an extra special touch. 😂
I think we have a winner !!
Ha ha - thank you! Great fun! 👍😀
Cool looking. Bowl, thanks for sharing
Nice work Andy 👍👍👍 Rectangular is the new round 🤣🤣🤣
Cheers Nick - exactly! 😂
Nice work love the shape and with the live edge great work mate
Cheers dude! 👍👍
Hahaha - you and your mate with your MDF jokes. Jeez - that Spanish wood bowl is muy elegante. Love it - oh and I'm nicking one of your MDF techniques in my next vid (it will be credited 😎) cheers m8, Rob
Ha ha - cheers Rob! 👍🛠
Beautiful job! Beautiful wood.
Cheers Tracy! 👍🛠
Cracking job mate
Cheers dude! 👍
Preferred the mdf version 😂
Seriously though, very impressive. Also like the humorous text additions to your videos. "47 years later" 😂
And... the next challenge is, make a Square Bowl WITH a lathe! Nice one Andy. I can see chicken tikka sitting nicely in that bowl. May have to edit the internet first though eh? BIG 👍 from me.
Ha ha - cheers Steven! 👍🛠😀
that looks really cool. well done
Cheers bud! 👍🛠
Love it! I'm off to my local sawmill next week for a dod of wood! Best aye.
Champion - cheers! 👍🛠
You had me going with the first bowl-haha
Ha ha - I was tempted to do something fancier out of MDF! 😂
Well done!
Thank you Johann! Fun project! 👍😀
Fantastic effort Andy. A lovely work of art, even if it isn't green. Hell that was a lot of sawdust. Will take you months to get rid of it all. 😂
Tell me about it - I'd just done a deep clean of the shop beforehand too - d'oh! 👍😂
Top job mon, very impressive I need one of those discs
Cheers Kevin! Took a bit getting used to but did the job in the end! 👍🛠
Cool....
Awesome channel and great looking bowl! I’ve seen a lot of these no lathe bowl challengers lately! Subbed
Thank you and welcome to the channel! 👍🛠
Brilliant video Andy! Lol👍👍👍👍👍👍😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
👍👍👍😂
Nice job matey, the Union Jack is the wrong way up in your workshop by the way...🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧...
Cheers! See this vid about the flag... czcams.com/video/TcrFgrbIroQ/video.html 😂👍
How do you find the 150mm random orbital sander? Was considering it as it's a reasonable price at £100 compared to what else is out there.
Nice one buddy!! Canny smart that;)
Cheers bud! 👍🛠
😂 Bwahahahahaha, I think it's hilarious that you edited Wikipedia!
Stellar job, mate. Your bowl looks awesome. 👍
Ha ha - the edit's still there. Can't believe it! 😂😂
Gosforth Handyman it'll probably end up staying there, I dare say some do call this type of (dish) a bowl. 👍
Educating humanity😉😂
Never heard of a donut wheel or sanding with a tennis ball before...
Improvisation with the tennis ball! 😀👍
ROFL... loved that MDF bowl. Should make a matching cutting board, then you'd fit right in with all the facepalm video suggestions CZcams gives me !
That was absolutely gorgeous and the oil really made it.
Finally remembering to use your Amazon link. Should see a few things this month.
Cheers Jake - nice to work with actual wood for a change! Cheers bud! 👍🛠
Materials and tools don't make the carpenter... his skill does. You're one hell of a carpenter !
Enjoyed, liked and subscribed :)
.... second comment now I've reached the end - that's just a gorgeous piece of work dude
Cheers bud! Fun project! 👍
Great job Andy, why didn't I think of using a tennis ball I tried every method of sanding on my bowl but a tennis ball would have been the solution😀
Tell me about it - I tried every other method too lol! It really did take FOREVER. 👍😀 Yours is awesome!!
Gosforth Handyman thanks Andy. I ended up making a sort of pile of sand in the bottom and rubbing that round with an old sanding disk. Necessity being the mother of invention and all that. Also I would have to wait for one of the local kids to loose a tennis ball over our fence for your method😀😀
That's a lovely boat you've got there. Only joking nice work mate.
Cheers Logan - I need to do a new pic of it floating with a banana in - banana boat hee hee... sorry... 😂
The Wikipedia edit == priceless!
👍😀 Genuinely amazed it hasn't been undone yet!
Hilarious! You win! lol :D
👍😀
Beautiful bowl Andy! Not so sure about the chestnut one though🤔😂😂
Ha ha - cheers! It's the caulk that really set it off, isn't it? 👍👍
If you can serve stew or soup in it without it going all over the table it counts as a bowl.
Exactly! 👍😂
I could definitely see something like this being used to serve something at a restaurant, so it definitely qualifies.
And here was me thinking that your MRDF instagram post yesterday was your effort! ha ha Brilliant!
Ha ha - nice to get away from the stuff for a change! 😂👍
Brill
👍🛠
can i submit pics i don't have a you tube channel but i made a bowl without a lathe, oh by the way that is very nice
Hi Jim - I'd suggest Instagram or Twitter! 👍🛠
Hope you did break the first one,as I heard Sotheby's is interested LOL
I might send them it... for a price. 🤔👍
Nah! The MDF one was better!
Nice work
Think I'll have to mount the MDF one on the wall. I can use one of the 'storage screws'. 👍
I thought the MDF bowl was looking promising.😂
😂😂👍
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl?wprov=sfla1
Haha! It's still there as of this comment.
Ha ha - I've re-defined the bowl!!! 😂😂
Hey this is CZcams I thought it was compulsory to take your saw Guard off to put you fingers at risk l thingol.
Why do they do that is it just an American thing to show how thick they are .
Shame on you. You copped out of the Avant Guarde post-Post Modernist mixed media piece, and went for boring old wood. Huh. :-D
Lol... I did vandalise it with spray paint though! 👍👍😂
