  • I'm making a bowl out of Spanish chestnut... without a lathe. Here's my submission for Keith Brown's (from Rag n' Bone Brown) Bowl Without a Lathe Challenge #BWALC - thank you Keith for setting this up, great fun little woodworking project and not made out of MDF for once! I've made my bowl out of Spanish chestnut - this is from a local tree in Northumberland that a friend of mine cut down. I used the Saburrtooth carving wheel for my angle grinder. Here's a few links to products I've used:

Haha, the opening skit was hilarious!!! 😆 Love the bowl, it turned out fantastic. I'll have to get me one of those do-nut wheels too. Thanks for sharing your methods and ideas and for participating - brilliant video

Ha cheers Keith! Luckily had the do-nut wheel from another project - expensive but works really well. Hopefully it will last! Still seems pretty sharp. 👍🛠

I understand about the time it takes to carve out a bowl. I once made a small dish out of walnut that was very hard. But in the end it got done. Very nice work.

I have been away this weekend, I watched your submission on my phone and rolled around the motor-home floor watching your spoof submission. Mrs was impressed and she don't like the sound of wood being cut, drilled, sawn and sanded on my pc....hilarious matey... reminded me so much of all my "daft" Geordie mates i used to work with.. (that is a massive compliment btw)... Cheers Paul

In Poland we have name for such kinde of bowl: kopańka, was made for kneading bread dough.
I had to make several in life, and adze is best tool for this job. Maybe turbo plane or chainsaw can be saft for rawing but im not sure.

Lots of hard work there Andy. Not sure I’d have had the patience you had to carve it out, but the angle grinder blade was a neat solution.
And 3 year later your changes to Wikipedia have moved a bit but are still there, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl so Bowl’s clearly can be rectangular as well as Wikipedia says so!

Gosforth Handyman thanks Andy. I ended up making a sort of pile of sand in the bottom and rubbing that round with an old sanding disk. Necessity being the mother of invention and all that. Also I would have to wait for one of the local kids to loose a tennis ball over our fence for your method😀😀
