  • I'm making a bunch of display pedestals for an exhibition and it's time to paint the MDF! A lot of people are scared of painting MDF but it's really nothing to worry about - I'll be walking you through what I do in this vid. Please note that for these plinths the top surface will be entirely covered by what's on it... but no, you can't see the joins between the pieces and these look utterly awesome. Watch parts 1 & 2 to see what happened before this:

    Hello Gosforth, great video's, very informative, my way of dealing with end grain MDF is using Wickes water based hard wearing satin varnish to prime raw edges, once dry a rub
    down with a worn flexible sanding block brings it up smooth and then just prime/undercoat, and no rough edge just a nice smooth surface to paint. I also knock my corners down with a small 45 degree bearing router bit to 2 -3 mm which leaves no faint line to try to cover, it's worked perfectly for years for me, I hope this proves helpful and they are only tips ,we all have our own ways, as l said great video's thanks Hainault Steve.

    Hi Andy, sorry to bring up an old video - I've just run back in your library to get some MDF painting advice, i've put up a full sheet in my garage to make a "tool wall" and i've painted it white (just primer so far) and already i've noticed a hand mark before i've even started loading it up. Does polyurethane over painted MDF make it a lot more durable? Or do you have any other advice?
    Cheers,
    Dan

    @rickymcc9072 Před 4 lety

    Hi, found your channel recently and subscribed. Not tried painting MDF yet or ply, but noted you favour ply over MDF for durability and strength. So I wondered about the relative quality of a painted surface using MDF vs ply as a base? Any views? Presumably it's all down to quality of sealing/priming, de-nibbing, building multiple coats etc rather than the base - albeit ply has more grain to disguise on surface (not end grain) than MDF.
    I know in auto trade that body shops make extensive use of fine polishing compounds (various grades up to ultra fine) and mechanical orbital rotary polishing tools to achieve a high gloss level. Do you know if the same approach would yield a really fine smooth, ultra gloss, look on painted MDF or ply panels?

    Hi Andy great videos you and Peter have got me back into woodwork after 40 odd years. Just one thing when you say you get a smooth finish with a roller, you mean you can’t even see a fine sort of orange peel effect as I do. Any chance of a extreme close up of your work just to get hang of what I should expect. thanks John

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  Před 6 lety

      Don't get me wrong, you'll struggle to get it as good as a sprayed finish... but you can get it pretty close, especially if you lay it off 30s or so after applying the paint. You can push it further with additives too to slow down the drying. I'll pop some closeups on my Instagram. 👍

    Great Videos Andy! I'm working on my MFA in photography and my work is very object oriented. At this point I see myself building 12-15 of these in various sizes for my thesis show next year. I'm contemplating leaving the bottoms off so that I can transport them inside of one another. For larger ones I would maybe use a cross beam and a use sandbag for stability. Do you see any pitfalls in this plan? Also I would love any advice on transporting them safely. I'm guessing you bubble wrapped these prior to transport? Did you have any corner protectors?

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Sounds good to me! They're quite heavy so anything to reduce weight is probably good. Yup, just bubble-wrapped to transport. I didn't bother with corner protectors since it was always me handling them so I was just really careful. 👍

    Hi Andy, what is the brand of mdf? I was thinking of using a proper timber supplier and get Medite brand or similar rather than what the diy stores sell, is it worth the extra cost for my own use. Terry

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  Před 6 lety

      This is Trupan and the non-MR stuff is really nice. The main advantage of using a brand is that they're more predictable. Medite is great. Stuff from DIY stores can sometimes be good... and sometimes less so. For your own use it will probably be absolutely fine. Report back and let us know! 👍

      @hansdegroot8549 Před 6 lety

      That's interesting. From Chile the MDF (SMR) goes by boat to England. No sea in Slovakia so for that
      transport only by lorries or smaller ships. (if)
      For hardboard and particle board (both raw or with melamine) are/were factories in Slovakia.
      OSB is often made in Germany (sometimes from Czech wood) I need to learn a lot more about MDF

    Paint is typically ready for a second coat ONLY after 6 to 12 hours, and some require 24 hours.
    Just because it's "dry to the touch" does NOT mean the paint is dry and ready for another coat.
    And it only takes you 30 seconds max to know how long you need to wait, it's on the pot ...

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  Před 6 lety

      The specs of the primer is 1-2 hours and 6 hrs for the gloss. The manufacturers have to give a generic figure to cater for a vast range of humidities and climates. This gloss is touch dry in 10-20 mins and with experience I know it's fine to re-coat after a few hours.
