How to build a LOW MAINTENANCE timber decking base
It’s finally time to start building our decking! We’ve been delayed so much by the weather but we’re finally ploughing on with this project. As we’re building this on a North facing wall in the North East of England we’re really thinking about long term maintenance on this one. I really want a timber deck and I’m fairly confident this will have a life span of at least 20 years. Possibly more. Today we’re building the base then in part 2 we’ll finish everything off and talk more about finishes, wood treatment etc. Enjoy!
Join the Member Zone to nerd out on extra detail about building this deck. We’ll start with estimating timber quantities and loads more to come after that:

Thanks for the video. I modified your procedure slightly by loosening the two screws and then clamping the jointer base and fence to a machined flat surface. In this case my Saw Stop table. I then tightened the two screws. The alignment was perfect.

I'd be happy to build anything for anyone south London preferably. I've been in construction for 25 years, price work painting was my first love in Australia and working with formworkers patching mistakes on city high rise luxury apparents. I was doing my master builder's certificate but moved to UK to meet blood family having been adopted at birth. I decided to take on bricklaying as looked like fun, took to it like a child takes chocolate often upset about bank holidays to be a fair point. I love my job and wish I started the trade earlier in life. Having my ticket expire I took on an extension for a shop owner and had the time of my life working for myself with my partner as labourer. It seems I have the knack for everything as my first time rendering and plastering ended up very trade worthy although I didn't enjoy the process at all. Now the project at an end I'm not fully happy to just go back on a team to just lay bricks, it was most enjoyable to be doing the entire build. It reminded me of how I enjoy woodwork and smells of timber having 4 years cabinet making experience as a youth. (Fine furniture) I don't always read the notifications so if anyone wants or needs me to keep on tapping me. All my work is done with personal joy at looking at what's achieved to say to myself that I did that. So I'm not exactly the quickest but nothing is out of place nor falling apart. Most desirable of all would be to find an investor to fund for us both large builds, I'm able to do near everything myself, just not live connecting electric but laying all wires not a problem. Same can be said for plumbing,. So all in all I have the time, skills and love for building, just nothing to build of my own. I come with references of course and some proud bricklaying on camera so I'm definitely no time waster. It seemed strange this fella found it hard to find a builder. I agree most are too greedy and as well too many cowboys doing cheap unregulated work that wouldn't pass on any sites I've worked on. With luck I hope all goes well for everyone. Thanks

If you place a nitrile washer so it sits on the shoulder of the chuck it will make removal easier in future projects. czcams.com/video/Y4LsIISmVmI/video.htmlsi=p3eW7hhbRK6bhWRb&t=1191 Sometimes they can be a real PITA to remove even with the small removal tool so needs mole grips or spanners, one on the core drill bit shaft and the other on the chuck. Using a rubber washer makes it easier so it doesn't fully compress against the core drill and are pennies to buy. It doesn't affect performance. Also if you have the diamond coated erbauer it should have no problem with bricks, I used mine to do the cooker extraction flue, took some time to do but it did the job

Very interesting and informative thank you. I was astonished at the house prices and council tax. I live in the south, in Croydon, not central London and not the most salubrious place in the world. Down here in the south where we’re all supposed to live like lords, I live in a 1930s built 3 bedroom semi in a residential area. The market price for this house, an average house, is £650,000. The band E council tax is £350pm. Salaries are not that different, especially in the public sector (we get outer London weighting which adds a little bit). A pint is £6.50. (Except Spoons). A five bedroom detached house for £275,000 is utterly unbelievable. You cannot get a two bedroom flat for that in the “working man” part of the south.

I still far prefer oil gloss on cills to water based , Miranol leaves a mirror like finish (if prepped properly ) , drop of Owatrol in it lovely to use. And because of plenty of UV light cills tend to stay white for a long while anyway.

Have you ever considered using foamed glass to fill voids instead of PIR boards? I am always concerned about moisture condensing especially between joists and insulation boards. Wondering what is humidity level before and after installing insulation. I know you did good job on air bricks but still remember how many old building were damaged just by cement based plaster or pointing on bricks.

15 years ago. we had our house 'renovated', 6 months of "new roof", all plastering taken down and redone. remodelled kitchen, bathroom new windows etc. . We're still dealing with things they'd either done wrong or shoddy.... Latest is, I've ripped up the floorboard , where I'D TOLD THEM I HAD DAMP ISSUES but all they did was replace the floorboard and put new joists in, because we've got dry rot and actual water under the floor.... ie, fixed the results, but not address the long term problem.... first job? remove the litter they'd left under the floor and remove some rubble... hey ho! Wouldn't mind, but iirc they weren't the cheapest quote, theyd been the recommended ones... Watching the video of course, because I think we're going to need a new floor and long term fix for the damp :/ so will have to deal with more builders .. ..

Can someone in the building trade or with a little bit of experience tell me if I can use this stability post method to strengthen my timber frame floor in my house?? I’m currently renovating my 1930s house and will be installing under floor heating throughout the whole of my downstairs which will have self leveling compound over the top. The issue I have is my timber frame floor has quite a bit of movement especially when the kids are jumping around and I don’t want to crack, damage the underfloor heating or the self leveling compound.. if someone could answer my question I’d really appreciate it. Please only reply if you have experience, no offence intended. I am in the trade (plumbing and heating engineer) so I like to think I know what I’m doing but just need a little bit of advice. Thank you 😊
