Power Carving a Trench Bowl

  • In this video, I power carve a trench bowl (also known by some as a dough bowl) out of curly maple and walnut.
    To do the initial rough shaping, I used the TurboPlane wheel by Arbortech on an angle grinder. For the smoothing and final shaping I used the Festool RAS 115 sander with 40 and then 120 grit paper.
    After that, I did finish sanding up to 500 grit using the Festool RO90 sander and finished the bowl with General Finishes Salad Bowl Finish.
    After 2 coats of finish I discovered some pretty deep scratches that I'd missed, so I sanded the whole bowl back down from 80 to 120, 220, 500 and 800 and will refinish it using Salad Bowl finish.

Really though, more than what project to start on, the big thing is just to start. Have fun, get a feel for whatever tools you have available and have at it. Practice on cheap wood, have fine and don't put pressure on yourself to make a perfect piece right out of the gate.

    my tip of the day is if you cut the bowl out of the template after carving the bowl set your band saw blade to about 30% angel then you good to just sand and not have to then recave the outter edge. also i cut the outter 1st so you can feel the depth of the bowl as you carve the inside out. so outside 1st inside 2nd.

    nice work...I am an arbortech user...I have the industrial pro, the bowl gouge, the planer, and the mini planer...I also have the mini carver blade, although I returned the apparatus....I made bowls for a living for 15 years...made 1000s....(still do but only as a hobby now)....I had so many years under my belt using the industrial pro that when I tried that planer you use, it was totally unnecessary...I use is on larger scupltures. Some advice...I NEVER use 40 grit, and that might be why you find scrath marks later on. Also bright light helps with that. For me, after the arbortech carving, I use/used a 80 grit flap disc in an angle grinder. It will remove all the divits very quickly and easily. Bad part is that they cost 7-8 bucks a piece. Used to go to walmart and buy out all their black n decker flap discs...lol. To save money I got one of those saber tooth "fine" carbide discs but they clog. But one will last 50x longer than a 7 dollar flap disc so financially they are worth it. From there I go to 80 grit in a random orbital. But the joy is in the journey.....your journey in trench bowls looks like you're having fun...keep it up.

(Im trying to find something to sand the inside of bowls with, right now Im using a drill with 2 inch pads which isnt ideal as the drill is tiring to hold) - Can you advise?

      @BradleyMakesThings  Před 7 lety

      +Thuan Duong I'm not sure which you're talking about - if it was earlier in the video it's the Festool RAS115. If it's later in the video, it's the Festool RO90. Both are great sanders. For the RAS115, you can do something similar by adding a resin fiber sanding disc to a variable speed grinder.

    The Salad Bowl finish is exactly the same as their regular varnish. people got wigged out with the whole Varnish/Food thing...so they re-labeled the can. I used to use Salad bowl finish as well until I found out that fact from one of their salesmen.

    • @BradleyMakesThings
      @BradleyMakesThings  Před 6 lety

      Yeah - after I used it I looked at the can a little more closely and realized it’s just a thinned down poly. That’s why it says not to use it for cutting boards and the like because you could ingest flakes of finish since it’s a film finish. After I finished the bowl for the video I found some more scratches so I had to sand it all back, and ended up with a Beezwax/mineral oil finish which I use for most of my food stuff. I did switch from that to making my own finish from organic Beezwax and organic toasted walnut oil though to get the most natural finish possible for those who would be wigged out with synthetics. I personally don’t have a huge issue with them, but enjoy using the wax/oil finishes for ease and also enjoyed making my own.

    • @Splash111
      @Splash111 Před 6 lety

      Beautiful bowl by the way...absolutely beautiful. . Nice job. The wood whisperer says that he dilutes tung and puts one coat on to help seal the fibers...then finishes with mineral oil/beeswax thin after the tung dries. . I have used diluted tung oil on gun stocks..... 25% and 75% mineral spirits to get more penetration and it works really nice. I then go to a 50%/50%.....then 75 % tung / 25% mineral spirits, then finish with 100% Tung. I just tried my first cutting board with 25% T / 75% MS then finished with beeswax and mineral oil. so far so good. Keep up the great work.

    Nice bowl and great vid. I been traditional hand carving and then power carving, on and off, here in the uk for 35 years and I'm getting back into it after accidentally becoming a builder for a few years! I think the arbortech industrial blade is much quicker for initial roughing out, then the turbo plane for refining the shape before sanding. I have recently got the arbortech ball gouge, which i at first thought was a bit of a gimmick, but it is great for undercutting and doing smaller bowls and hollow forms, and if used gently and carefully, can create a texture that can pass for hand gouge tool marks (after a light sanding) . Do you use this attachment? It's slower than the discs of course, but is a great addition to my power carving arsenal! Keep up the good work, be safe and have fun : )

    • @BradleyMakesThings
      @BradleyMakesThings  Před 6 lety

      +Jules Webb Thanks for the tip, Jules! I actually have a blade similar to the arbortech industrial that I’ve been asked to review called the DBX cutter - has round carbide replaceable blades like the industrial but has 6 instead of two. Hoping that works out well! There’s also the chainsaw style blades the likes of the Lancelot by King Arthur Tools which I have, but because it’s so easy to overdo it in power carving I actually don’t mind the extra time the turboplane takes. We’ll see how it compares to the DBX cutter though.

      @BradleyMakesThings  Před 8 lety

      I was using wood that was already dry so there were no issues there. There was a little warping in the boards before I glued them up from the drying process, but I corrected that with the jointer and planer before glue up. At 1:26 and following you do something incredibly dangerous. You are cutting the inside slope of the bowl with the cutter head facing your body. Your shirt and body are way too close to the spinning blade. What would happen is that it would grab your shirt pull it in and start wrapping it around the shaft and pull you into the blade. In an instant it would wrench the entire unit right out of your hands and you would be seriously injured. And the angle grinder doesn't have a momentary switch so it will keep running though you are no longer controlling it.
    You do nice work but you have to do it safely so you can keep making new things for us to see.
