I'm Making some Custom Transport Cases (for fragile models)

- In this project I'm making some bespoke wooden transport / carry cases for a customer. These foam lined packing cases are designed to hold delicate models during shipping. They needed to be milimeter accurate size-wise and light enough to be carried by a single person. These are made from 5mm hardwood ply with a PSE softwood framework. There's also a pricing video of this project over on my Patreon. Enjoy!

The way you used masking tape to mark the handles is genius! I cat believe that I never thought of that
The combo of video and music on this one was very relaxing on a rainy Saturday morning - thanks Andy!
You are a joy to watch at work, its the little things that i like the most, the fixtures and fittings and such, old video i know but i never got around to watching this until now, glad i did, cracking end results.
Thank you Jay! 👍
I think I learned more from this one video than I learned in all the woodwork classes they stuck me in at school.
Also, the full job from beginning to end was a timely reminder that, well, stuff just takes time. I usually go into a build thinking "This'll just take ten mnutes.. and then hours later I'm getting frustrated that it's not finished yet. By day two I'm sick of the sight of it.
Thanks Andy!
Top job, by anyones standard. Need more pro's like you. Newcastle is lucky to have you👍
Thank you Mike! 👍
Lovely work with some great ideas for accurate, repeatable working. Thanks
As always very nice work! And a brilliantly produced video.
Great stuff, I always learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. Thanks
Great video, quality boxes, pleasure to watch you work.
Amazing Andy :-) I learned quite a few lessons there especially about how to accurately place and drill handles.
Brilliant job, Andy. Very sleek and professional.
That job looked very satisfying.
Those boxes are a work of art!!!
They look great. I wish I had things to keep in them.
Excellent,as usual. I liked the handle template too
Nice work, well done. Bit of a teaser though, as we didn't actually see the models that fit in them! 😎
Cracking job mate............Some grafter you
Hi Andy. It's great to see the progress with the cinematography and general artistry in your videos. A really classy video fella. The boxes looked great too.
Great job Andy love the palm router hinge rebate trick
Nicely done! The boxes and hardware looked great and you shared some tips without saying a word. Music was good as well.
Ron
Can Saturdays start any better than this? Quality craftsmanship in the build, filming and editing..... cheers Andy!
Just wanted to say exactly the same! Maybe adding the beautiful music.
The handle marking trick is pure class. Brilliant job mate they look great. Awesome video edit
i love the build style of these boxes... seems like they're a lot lighter than if they were made out of 3/4" mdf or plywood. next time i need some boxes, i definitely want to give this design a try! thanks, Andy!
Hey Andy love to see you making something!
I really enjoy that you give to details! That's a rare trait in today's market that only a few share!
All I can say is HOLY CRAP those look amazing!!! You really took the time to make probably one of the best videos I’ve seen related to detail-oriented carpentry in years! Your attention to minor details is impeccable and to build multiple identical boxes is a feat! Great work and exceptional video edit! I know how hard it is to make a properly edited vid with artistic b-roll. Looks great
I'd be tempted to make these even though I've no use for them they look that nice. Another fine job Andy👍
I made something similar last year, but I routed a groove for the ply panel and held it all together with pocket screws. I wasnt happy with the final look for the purpose I had in mind so pulled it apart not long ago.
As a case maker for the past 10 years I was a little confused as the way you put these together but then realised it was done to suit the cases style. Great work fella
Fantastic stuff, brought a tear to my eye. Stay strong man! .. you can get through this. There are plenty more fish in the sea.
Nice job mate.really enjoyed the video
Thank you! 👍
Excellent
I can't decide what I love more.... the work or the video itself. Amazing work Andy. Loved every second of that.
Cheers bud 👊
Neat! Nicely done...
Class job Andy👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Nice job Andy.
You can really get some very useful tips from these videos. Great boxes.
Thank you Sir! 👍
propper job that Andy. Also love the masking tape "trick" so simple but very effective.
Dam that was relaxing, great music choice with the editing 👍
Very impressive finished product.
Enjoyed the wee change of this just being a construction/assembly video without the chat.
Great looking job Andy, I think you need a Millard/ Corex spray booth 😂
Simple - if you know what you are doing. I learned quite a few tricks there, thanks. Great music, as someone already commented, but missed that accent Andy!
Nice one Ande.
Morning Andy
As usual woodworking without the jabber and no repeat shots of the same job, well done.
Can you gIssa clew about De Muzak please.
Keep doin it.
Absolutely beautiful work Andy wish you were closer to Ayr
Fantastic video! The music just really sucked me in. Good choice. Nicely done. Would transport a model in those boxes any day.
Cheers bud! 👍
Hi Andy.
Wow, love the boxes. The finish is very smart. Watching you scribe the hinges and chisel out was good; I feel more confident about doing so now.
Is the table saw a new addition to your workshop?
Nice job Andy. I particularly liked the “Don’t chisel towards your wrists” advice. Sadly that came about 50 years too late for me and I still have the scar from a school woodwork lesson. (I have other scars from school back in those days but I won’t go into that here 😜)
I quite liked this new style video but I also like your chatty videos too. Like chatting with a mate in his garage.
All the best to you and yours sir.
Ps. As a model maker myself I too would have liked to have seen the models. Just out of curiosity really.
Good job bud
Now to make a case for these beautiful cases ^_^
Looking good
When fitting the hinges did you deliberately not rout to the full depth required ?
Nice job & video
Very relaxing to watch with that music. Lots of little tips n tricks in this video. Great work (but it looks like little coffins.. A bit creepy..) would love to see what they are used for (If they are indeed not coffins.. ;)
top work my friend, what is the last track called, it a lovely track
i noticed a few comments asking about the last song its called" just one kiss" by loving caliber
Nice one
Very nice project. Hope you don't mind if I use the design to make my own..
10:15 If anyone is wondering about this song, it is "Postpone" by Ameryh.
Excellent video. Very good music choice.
And i like how you watermark the video DiResta style, with the sticker on the glue bottle.
Maybe it's just because he is not sponsored by Titebond!
Those look great. I am curious why you painted over the hinge? I would have thought it best to take the hinge off after mortising it in, then paint, then put the hinge back.
Great product & production, 17.26 minutes, must have made a profit!
Where do you get your music from, its very nice?
Whats not to love about wooden boxes. 😁
NICE JOB MUCKS
Nice job Andy, surprised you don’t get RSI with all those boxes
Where did you get the foam from
You'll be making custom coffins next 😉. Seriously though those cases are a thing of beauty. What is it that you're using to sharpen your chisels on the wall?
Nice Video, ever considered the Undertaking Business?
Health and safety have gone too far if you're now required to wear a face mask to fit hinges! 😬 All joking aside it was great to watch a true craftsman at work Andy. Just popping over to Patreon to watch that pricing video now...
Great job and would you please tell me who the artist is singing??
Superb craftsmanship and pretty timber! Hidden under black paint. Understand the functional why, but they looked outstanding natural. Still, your craftsmanship is way beyond your handyman moniker!
Love everything you're doing mate, love the channel. But if I could give a bit of constructive criticism, I think instrumental music works better than music with vocals, that's just my opinion though. Leaving in a little bit of the shop audio in the background is a good touch too.
Realy nice video. Who was the musician/singer?
I'll add all the music to the description when I get a second. Can't remember off the top of my head. 👍😀
Ahh...You Need to make yourself a Paul Sellers: "Poor Mans Router"...For your hinge work...Wonderful Boxes and Video. Make boxes for ½ your table, at least a foot high, to raise your work while painting...Ergonomics.
I agree. A hand router would probably be quicker and give better results than the use of a chisel and machine route.
Anyone else crying near the end ? not because there was no MDF in this video , that darn music :O(
I think the triangular brackets on the lid are MDF?!
I think I’m going to build some of these cases for my little brothers custom NERF gun collection
I'm only here reading the comments to see if there was a divisive war of words over the use of a Festool pencil (13:31)
noce work, super video: hugs from me 👍
Very nice work but at 14:05, a positive screw and a Philips driver!?! That's a naughty!
Ha - well spotted! Beauty of Pozidriv is that you can use a Phillips driver in them. Not the other way 'round though - another reason I hate Phillips screws. 😂
@@GosforthHandyman Wouldn't want this to detract from the really professional job of the cases - particularly impressed with the quality of the paint finish. If you apply too much pressure with a Philips screwdriver it will 'cam out'. It is designed to do this for screws in plasterboard.
Ha ha, "they're not coffins". I was asked to make some coffins once for a school's production of The Rocky Horror Show. Heaven knows what the neighbours thought.
Do you realise that you fire your nail gun in time! Andy Macronome ;)
It sounds like your record player needs a new needle
I really enjoy your videos which are very informative and great to watch but I partly come here for your accent and your presenting style which doesn't come across in subtitles very well. Also the lack of audio explanation commentary means they are not as consumable for me personally as I'm not a fan of reading, although I can appreciate that it could open it up for a wider audience or testing a different style of video. thanks Sam
Hi, I'm sorry if that came across as negative just one man's opinion
but they do look like coffins lol
I know! 😂
That's posidrive, not positive
Although they look nice i dont think those handles are very practical , there is a proper handle made for cases, i suppose you were going more for looks. I habe made a lot of roadcases myself over the years.
If Paul Sellers ever sees that chiseling segment he’ll keel over and expire.
Nice video though -the music and editing is top notch. Did the painting get tiresome at all?
Love your videos and I know they are only transport cases but they are wood did you have to paint them wood is wood and it's a sin to paint it in my eyes sorry for moaning but that's what wood varnish is for to show off wood
