2019 Porsche 911 Carrera Review: Is the BASE (991.2) Carrera A Purists’ Sports Car?

  • This week I got to spend some time in one of my favorite cars, the Porsche 911! This happened to be a 991.2 generation Carrera, and while it has now been replaced by the 992 gen, it still brings a whole lot to the table... this thing is properly sick. I particularly love the slightly over-steering nature and aggressively rear biased weight distribution.
    Since Porsche notoriously nickel & dimes their customers, it sometimes can feel frustrating to spec one of these up and see just how much $$$ in options you can tack on to the base price. Well it was refreshing for me to spend time with not only a base 911, but one that lacked options, like the Sports Exhaust, Sport Seats Plus, and Sports Chrono Pack, all of which in theory I would want... because it proved that while they are nice additions, the basic formula is far from "unfinished."
    I'll always take more speed, more aggressive seats, and a louder exhaust note, but at just over $100k new, and now around $80k on the used market, the 991.2 Porsche 911 Carrera offers about as compelling of a sports car experience for the money as I can think of!! Very few cars produced in the past several years can evoke as much passion or command as much of your attention as this BALANCED machine! Check out the video to find out more!

    Helped explain why Porsches are special , they are more than the sum of their parts and especially impressive for making a convincing case of a last model 991.2 over a 992.

    Great video. You really have a great knowledge about the 911 range, a rarity among the younger generation. I had a 991.1 Carrera S and loved it. I'm currently looking for a 991.2 to replace it (potentially a GTS).

    I have this car except mine is a 17 and a 7spd, black on black with the 20 inch Carrera s wheels and a soul exhaust/sport cat set up. I would love a gt3 one day but I think the beauty of the Carrera is its more supple ride and daily capabilities. It is firm but not near as firm as the 997 or 996 gt3 would be. I love driving it every day and the manual just adds to the fun. Another point is how tunable these cars are, a stg 1 from APR can give you +100HP and +120lb ft. Should be very minimal added risk because the engine in the S and GTS is almost exactly the same 3.0 L just with bigger turbos

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  Před 3 lety +2

      Well said, and your car sounds lovely. Yes the tuning capabilities of the 991.2 and now 992’s is astonishing.. and pairs quite nicely with the overall practicality of a base or S... with that said I would absolutely love to have a 997.2 GT3RS :)

How is the co-pilot supposed to catch a vibe with just 2 tall boys on the way to a Sunday morning cars and Irish coffee? 2 years ago I was trying to decide between 2 different 991.1 C2S and a C4S that were available at fair market prices. Am so glad I test drove a Base 991.2 that had very good option specs, including S wheels. The 2nd Gen is improved in every way-- especially in visceral acceleration. I bought this 'modest' 911 and am so happy with it. IMO it's still better than the 992, except that 992 has the wider fenders. Going to twin turbos on the base model will be thought of as another stroke of Porsche brilliance in the near future.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  Před 3 lety +2

      As awesome as the 992 is (I've only driven a C2S thus far) it's quite a bit larger than the 991 Gen cars without a tremendous added benefit aside from those lovely rear fenders you mentioned.
      I think the move to forced induction on the Carrera lineup will become increasingly appreciated when enthusiasts realize that it was a necessary evil in order to avoid going full electric 😅👍😎

    • @foesfly3047
      @foesfly3047 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Reoniz about the 992, the more stringent emissions standards adding the particle filter is a big negative. I personally really don't like the door handles having an electric mechanism to deploy it for use-- just complexity, expense and a future failure point, for zero benefit IMO. Of course the infotainment systems improve every model and the 992 is definitely a step forward but the 991.2 is still much more than adequate. I've heard the base interior spec of the 992 is now quite good. If so, that's nice because the options that made my particular 991.2 very good were costly. Lastly, the 20"/21" Carrera Classic Wheels offered on the 992 are the best looking 911 wheel ever!

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  Před 3 lety +1
