One of the finest and certainly the most refined automobile in the world. Super presentation that best showcases the art of automotive evolution that the Porsche 911 exemplifies like no other car in the history of the car industry. If there is only one review of the 8th generation 911 worth watching, above all others, this was it. It was the 911 of reviews: historically contextual, technically relevant, viscerally engaging and entertainingly informative. An edutainment production worthy of the perennial automotive icon that is the 911!

MotoManTV Well-deserved. Every other car channel journalist seems to take the evolution of the 911 for granted. Then they inevitably emote a hesitantly awkward or lily-livered expression of impish disappointment for the rarefied predictability of the car’s incremental evolution, which is compounded by their feigned or wistful hopes for dynamic revolution: as if such a posture was calculated to impress, or more likely positioned to resignedly conform. Yet the greatest insult that pervades respecting the ‘Icon’ is that it has become too competent in its function and overly understated in its form, and by extension immoderately perfected to the point where objective criticism appears to be more or less forced or fabricated-how seemingly vexing for the accidental journalist, not to mention the consumers of automotive journalism. (That’s like saying my Patek Philippe watch is too accurate, rather than recognize it for the evolutionary marvel that it is.) The sublimeness of the newest 911 leaves most journalists flabbergasted, which is as forgivable as it is understandable. With the 911 we are witnessing one of the greatest technological achievements of mankind, which is the continuous evolution of an original automotive design, from a bygone era that still retains the power to inspire as well as to compete successfully at the highest levels. This way of doing things in the car industry defies conventional wisdom while at the same time this singular tried-and-true formula enshrines a sense of nostalgia that looks back reverentially and simultaneously drives forward confidently. Most other journalists are painfully hesitant to cast caution to the wind, and wholly embrace the uniqueness of the venerable 911, for fear of compromising their inviolable credibility. It’s always a double-edged sword for any automobile journalist to exercise the courage to give-way, unreservedly, to their instinctive passion for the iconic 911. An ovational or slavish tribute to virtually any car is apt to invite an avalanche of rebuke from fans as well as trigger a potentially irrecoverable cost one’s credibility. Ergo, the art of paying unapologetic homage to the 8th Generation 911, without compromising one’s integrity, requires a blend of studied objectivity, intrinsic justification and factual heritage-all of which the ‘Icon’ can apodictically deliver in spades. With that said you have, in my considered opinion, reviewed the latest 911 for what it truly is: a quintessential masterpiece that is never quite finished, without resort to unnecessary hype or unwarranted detractions-as it should be. Again, my pleasure...my apologies for being long-winded.

Thanks for the great review on this new 992 version! I’ve had 911 since 1999 model 996, 997.1, 997.2 (GT3RS). Recently sold the GT3RS. (6months ago). To me, GT3RS gave me the most visceral driving experience, the car was very responsive but good for short 45mins trip. I know the greatness of the new 911s, but somehow Porsche are making it too much of a big grand touring sporty cars. That’s okay. One must look for the GT3 models for more driving sensation. But what a shame that Porsche owner can’t able to see the beautiful engine from Stuttgart!

I'm living in Ireland and have a Gen 2 997 base Carrera PDK. Road tax per annum is €1200 and is based on CO2 emissions. It is the only version that is €1200 of the range, all the rest in the 997 range are €2350 per year. As for electrification, I'm open to see what Porsche come up with Hybrid wise, when you see what they did with the 918 Spyder it shows how good they can make it. As for a 911 and total electrification that is a different scenario. Not sure what to make of that just yet.

Welcome back, M! Helluva starter for season X! Starting out with a bang. 👌
Ideally, a self contained system like the LaFerrai & NSX would be the way to go, but I have feeling it'll be similar to their E-Hybrid line up. Worst case scenario will be a plug-in system mated to a 4-cylinder engine to compensate for the additional weight from the batteries. Either way, prepare for the visual assault of acid green badges splattered all over the car.
    My car is tax-free, M ... :)
Well, technically the first owner paid a tax it for it when s/he bought it new in New York 11 years ago. The second owner paid 5% customs/duty fees when he imported it 6 years ago. We're are the owners number 4.

In Sweden cars cost about 50% of the danish price- somewhere around us levels I believe . Then there will be different taxes to reduce driving for the environment and road tax .Petrol cost an arm and a leg.

I understand that the engine has been moved forward by 20cm / 8 inches. I wonder what that has done to the
weight distribution? If you equip this car with the manual tranny how much less will it weigh? If you then order it
with 4 wheel steering (but still only rear wheel drive) will that also help keep the rear from slipping out?
Finally the PDK is now 8 speeds and a half second faster to 60mph, but I think since they added more HP and torque I would say the manual will be very fast enough and be $5,000 cheaper which I prefer.

When electrification arrives Porsche will need to particularly pay attention to 3 things: Power will need to be evident in terms of very impressive immediacy and linear delivery( to a point), Range will need to be close to 400 miles to compete with Tesla, Charging will have to be fast, convenient and to hold a stagnant charge for weeks at a time if necessary and lastly Top Speed better be 911 like! Cheers.

What I would like to see from electrification is what Mercedes did with their new 48V system. Just a simple torque-rich pancake electric motor placed up against the transmission and an intelligent method for tapping into it. In the new Mercedes GLE 450 and GLE 53 SUVs, they use a straight-6 base engine and jack it with the aforementioned electric motor. The results are - as best as I can tell - significantly faster than some diesel equivalents but the same efficiency. So Porsche could use it to add punch and also add efficiency, is what I'm getting at.

I only would desire an electrified 911 if the weight is not ungainly and it makes the car less squirmy in wet conditions/sharp corners and it contributes to additional performance AND braking capabilities. Most EV fan boys seem to forget 0-60 mph is just half of the important metric. 60-0 mph is equally important.

Ok ..I live in Sydney Australia..pricing here is just stupid for luxury cars. New 911 992 carrera S base price starts at 265,000 AUD. (USD $190,000) and there there the tax. Luxury car tax is AUD $59000 on top. So a total of $324,000 or $232,000 usd without any optional extra goodies.

Still can’t see myself getting onboard with fully electric vehicles. Don’t care how fast or efficient or whatever they are; the fact is that I’d rather ride a bike to work than drive an electric car

Cannon Powers I’m super looking forward to the future mini 918s. I’m actually grabbing a 2019 cayenne hybrid until Porsche releases the 911 hybrid system battery. You must embrace perfection not cling to old imperfections because you’re “use to it”....

    • @colin5577
      @colin5577 Před 5 lety +4

No. I'm not looking forward to it, either. Know what a new battery pack costs for a 918, P1 or LaFerrari? £150,000, £170,000 and £200,000. They have to be changed every 7, 6 and 5 years. Which means a hybrid 911 is going to come with a huge increase in weight, complexity and cost whilst losing its manual gearbox permanently. For a bit of torque infill. Hurray. As for emissions based tax costs? If you need to save money, buy a Cayman or a Boxster.
