Porsche 992 Carrera review. Is the base 911 Carrera a better buy than the Carrera S?

  • The new 992 version of the 911 is the most technologically advanced yet but is the regular 385bhp Porsche Carrera actually a better buy than the 450bhp Carrera S? You save £11,500 by going for the regular 911 Carrera over the Carrera S and in this video, I look into which version is the best one to buy.

To me 17” are perfect for most cars. I hate 20”-22” because with most low profile tires you get no suspension action from the tire.

I have debated this with myself (and others) for years now. I genuinely believe that the best looking Carrera is the simplest base model. No wings, slots, scoops, splitters, nothing.........just let the design speak for itself. Having said that, I think the best looking Carrera of recent years is the 911R from a few years ago - but that was the simplest of 911 design shapes too.

Greetings from the USA Harry. Enjoyed your video and wanted to say that I went through a similar deliberation process before ordering my 2017 Carrera. Having driven both the base and S model, I ultimately decided to go with the base model, and spend the extra money on options like a full red and black leather interior, which goes well with the white car. Not being a track guy I felt that the base had adequate power for my needs.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and an end to this bloody virus.

Great video thanks for posting. A while back I test drove a 997 turbo and loved it. It had the wider tires but didn't notice excessive loud tire roar/road noise. Since I liked the wide body but not the price I went with the 997 4s. Great car and really enjoyed it except for one thing: it was very loud in the cabin :) The tire roar was the problem with apparently less sound deadening inside (vs the turbo model).Years later I am now thinking about getting a 997 (my favorite series 911) in the turbo spec...

Also this applies only taller people but if you plan to go on track make sure you can fit inside a Cayman with a helmet on. A helmet adds many inches to your torso height. If you can't fit in a Cayman you might need to get a 911. I can easlly roadtrip in my friends C6 corvette. But doing 3 laps on track with my head tilted at an angle against the roof felt down right claustrophobic.

Because Sports Chrono gives you ‘Sport Plus’ mode where you can engage Launch Control. In this Carrera you were testing you only have Wet, Normal and Sport Mode. When you tried it that just seemed like a foot on the brake with acceleration when lifting off. Not quite Launch Control where it holds the revs until you disengage the brake pedal. 👍🏼

Could it be reduced sound deadening at the rear? Unlocks some engine noise at cost of cabin refinement. I vaguely recall a story many years ago of engineers desperately chasing noise out of a car, then realised that carpeting the boot made a huge difference. Anyway, great point about the mounts/bushes too, that'll also do it. Interesting video content as usual, cheers.

Thank you, Harry! Was always wondering about the base. You hit it on the head. It's a very capable *GT*, these days, but the interior noise problem plus the mandatory autobox makes it an unresolved product. And, happy new year!

Hi Harry, about the cabin noise in both of the 992's you tried, I noticed that they have an option on their configurator called "Lightweight Noise Insulated Glass". You should see if Porsche can give you a car with this option installed, to see if it makes a difference.

Looks like they’re reserving the manual in the base model for the future Carrera T. If you’re tracking it then you’re better off with the Carrera S, which has the larger brakes and Porsche Torque Vectoring (not available on the Carrera) which makes a difference.

Good video thanks Harry. I presume the ride is still firm? I recently changed from an F Type S to a new 992 Carrera S having driven a C2S at Porsche Silverstone track then test drove one on the road but in the rain. Having owned it for a couple of months, two things that stand out (as you mentioned) are the poor ride over even slightly bad surfaces and loud road noise - more than my F Type which I didn't expect. The soundtrack is pretty dull too and not particularly nice when revved hard - again I'm comparing this to an F Type which wasn't loud unless you gunned it. I guess it's the 'Porsche' sound which I wasn't used to and, surprisingly, as you point out the car doesn't feel every day usable. Other than that it's good car and seriously quick, somewhat better built than the F Type which turned out to be one of the worst cars I've ever owned from a build quality and reliability point of view (without exaggeration it had more than 15 different problems in the 4 years I owned it).

Great video, Mate! I have to agree, the road noise in most newer 911s is just too much. I own a 991.2 GTS, 7 speed manual. The car is amazing however, my only complaint is tire noise. I replaced the original spec Pirellis with Michelin PS4s shortly after taking delivery, hoping to reduce tire noise but the improvement was barely noticeable. In their long list of options, Porsche should offer the choice to add additional sound insulation to reduce the annoying tire noise. I would have ticked that box for sure!
Regarding the 911’s performance focused engine mounts and suspension joints; I don't believe they contribute to road noise, or if they do, it’s insignificant. Those components would lead to firmer road manners and/or ride quality though Porsche now offers dynamic engine mounts to partially address that. I’m pretty sure most of the noise comes from a combination of wide tires and lack of sound deadening. Cheers from Oregon, USA!

I’m 61 now and having owned a string of 911s , the last one being a 991.1 GTS , I totally agree with you ...the cabin noise is very intrusive and you notice it more as the years mature. I have changed from Porsche now and have bought a Maserati Granturismo 4.7 sport , another of your past cars, and I have to say ...” what a car “ the exhaust note, the presence and then there is the way it looks .....I was always Porsche but I’m now firmly in the Maserati camp....every drive is an occasion.
Brilliant review as always Harry ...cheers.

My (limited) experience with Japanese sports cars (1991 Supra twin turbo) is that they're simply not up to European standards, particularly in terms of ride and 'feel' on the road. I just felt isolated from the action and despite the ability to travel quickly, was left feeling that it was just a machine to get from A to B rather than an organic experience enabling me to feel at one with machine and road. Clearly built with the American market in mind since manufacturing began.

I think the fact that the base Carrera isn't available with a manual transmission is down to emission regulations. Car manufactures have to pay more money to the EU if their fleet is above a specific CO2 limit. A manual car is less fuel efficient than a PDK car and thus they would have to pay more money to the EU. A base Carrera would probably be quite popular as a manual and therefore this would significantly impact their fleet CO2 emissions.

The absolute BEST thing to do, would be to GET RID of these filthy, lying TYRANTS you’ve voted in over there! This whole “Global Warming” alarmism is a complete and total LIE!!! Man is not responsible for ANY global warming. ZERO.
REAL scientists (not the paid, activists employed by the grifters who love to raise your taxes), ALL state MAN, has nothing to do with (they call it ‘Climate Change’ now, to better fit the narrative…Remember when they told us an ICE AGE was coming??) this Climate Change narrative.
The SUN, is mostly responsible. And Earth is CYCLICAL. It’s called WEATHER. The only difference nowadays, is today we have GRIFTERS called MARXISTS, SOCIALISTS, COMMUNISTS, FASCISTS, all vying for higher taxes to line their pockets with. It’s all about CONTROL, and control is POWER.
It’s sad that I have to tell this to ADULTS. You all should have the wisdom to know all this, but you people question NOTHING!!!! You hear it from your MASTERS, the liars on the evening news, or the papers, or movies, or WHATEVER…And you question NOTHING.
Look at you! You took an EXPERIMENTAL injection SEVERAL TIMES, to rid yourselves of the IMAGINARY “C19”…Which turned out to be THE FLU!!!!! Haha! What about your “vaccine”??? Aren’t THOSE supposed to prevent??? Did it??? NO!!! How many did you take???? SEVERAL!! COME ON!!! WAKE UP!!!!!
It’s ALL BS, and you are dangerous as THEY are for not QUESTIONING OBVIOUS LIES!!!! Jeez!
There’s no “climate change”, outside of normal weather patterns… But THEY are spraying chemicals from jets, so if there is anything happening to our climate, it’s being done DELIBERATELY by those who are whining incessantly about it for the last 50 years…So, maybe LOOK UP, and notice what was a bright and clear blue sky in the early morning, then the jets fly high and mark up your sky, those trails EXPAND 50x, and before you know it, the sky is filled with that UGLY, grayish-yellow haze…. But NO!!!! The GRIFTERS would NEVER do THAAA-AAAAT!!!!
      Hahaha!!!!

I had the pleasure of driving a 2020 911 C4S over a weekend a few weeks back. I was hoping it would replace my 2012 911 C2. On the highway my wife and I struggled to have a conversation over the overbearing sound inside the cabin. It got to the point it was giving me a headache. I think I’ll stick to my 8 year old base 911. It’s still a lot of fun to drive and while it doesn’t have some of the modern amenities (like Apple CarPlay) at least I don’t need to wear earplugs. Thanks for another informative video Harry.

Hi Harry, hope you are keeping well. For me the 911 has always been the most beautiful car. And i can't see past the base model every time. In white it's a real work of art. Cabin noise? More sound insulation. As you've tested it here, this is my perfect car. Unfortunately me and my friend Arthritis probably couldn't get in or out of this beauty these days, so thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work. 👍🖖😎🦼
