Whether they were things that happened in the show, or the wider fandom around it, I seriously thought about walking away from it all, even after #TeamFourStar was a thing! I've watched dragon Ball all the way to super i even got to read jaco's manga and Dr slump also got to watch all 20 dragon Ball movies. Man I'm a true legend fan. I been watching since I was a kid.

The broke movie was good and all but it did have its fair share of problems
Like
1 why didn’t goku and vageta use the kioken and evolution blue against broly
2 why didn’t goku teleport to old Kai and ask for the earrings to fuse in to vagito it would of taken him 3 min instead of a hour
3 they could of mixed the bardock special and dragon ball minus and the filler with king vageta in to this movie
4 why didn’t the other come to help goku and vageta
5 what is the legendary super Saipan form and what can it do

DBZA made me binge watch the whole 300+ episodes of DBZ for the first time. I'd seen the Namek saga before, but I had no idea how long the show was, or what happened after Trunks cut Freeza up. Or what Kai was; I didn't care, because I wanted to know what really happened, and get some of the jokes.
No show is ever perfect. If you cant find flaws in your show, then you're not really paying attention to it.
MAVvH we can like stuff, but we should never be ignorant to its flaws. Like me with DBZ and Bleach. XD

Deep cuts with 'the Guts off the boat' line Masako, that took so long!
Nothing really made me want to quit Dragon Ball but for some reason after I was nine or ten years old I lost 'interest?' in the material. I bought a few of the games as they came out but I really didn't care about the material like I used to. Then when I was in seventh or eighth grade my best bud pulled out his phone and showed me Episode 9 of DBZA and that is what kept me hooked in. Now as a soon to be senior in college I can't think of not having some form of Dragon Ball media within arms length.
So, I guess this is kind of a thank you as well because you guys over at TFS (as well as my best friend) are the reason I got back into Dragon Ball, and into the deeper non-action/non-surface parts as well.
This is almost exactly what happened to me! Truly a huge thank you to Masako and the team at TFS.

Super Saiyan God, Beerus, and Frieza coming back made jump off, but what really made want to quit was the Buu saga and characters being rebooted again to tell the same story.
Loved Dragon Ball Super Broly but the series is looking more and more like an advertising project as time goes on.
I was also super salty about Frieza coming back during Resurrection F. It feels so out of place compared to the rest of Dragon Ball Super, and feels (and probably is) like a cash grab and a bit of fan service from the early DBZ days. Toyotaro even wrote out Resurrection F from the Super manga. Frieza in the Tournament of Power was annoying too, since I wanted to see Buu fight, but Frieza had some awesome moments during that arc.
@@Kruegernator123 you're right about that, it may as well be a cash grab with the fact that cooler was apparently able to achieve golden form for some reason.
I know it's not technically canon, but the very fact that he just says "if he can do it so can I" felt like a slap in the face.
Future Dragon Ball story will be heavily made out off fanfic material like DBAF made by Toyotaro himself go figure.
i remember toonami UK had dragonball at 8. Dbz at 8.30 and GT T 9pm. So I was watching 3 shows at the same time.
Seeing the pilaf arc, cell saga and then goku back as a kid again while being a grandpa confused the hell out of me
about yamcha: me and the few friends I have that actually like DB always say that you can lovingly meme the guy, but don't you dare ever say anything genuinely bad about him. yamcha is the heart of the show, damnit!
...or at least the appendix: we're unsure why its there, but its probably good for something!

I quit dragon ball after super ended. Too many inconsistencies and bad writing can't be justified by some brilliant moments here and there. I wasn't mad though, I had fun and the original series is still there.
But then Broly came out, and oh boy was that good. Back on it since then.

This was pretty much me. Of course, until I see them actually do the new arc the manga is doing and it's animated not crappily, tells more backstory on what the entire show's new premise was, and doesn't insert what is canon yet feels like a filler arc in between every piece of it (and not more tournaments either), I don't have much intention to give watching the series a chance, at least not through every single episode. One will definitely never catch me sitting through the arc versions of "battle of gods" or "ressurection f" ever again, and same goes if they do that to the broly film.
I just don’t understand why you would view a show like dragon ball critically for bad writing and inconsistencies you are the type of fan who ruins things for yourself with the inability to switch off, although that’s what most people in comments sections are like nowadays

"the original is still there" It is really not any DB fan's fault if they aren't interested in Super. Horrid animation, fanservice the show, full arcs that feel like fan-fiction that aren't filler, poor endings like "the zeno button" and taking 110+ episodes to even begin convey what battle of gods introduced. Hopefully the morro arc when it comes back on is animated far better, fight scenes like super broly, not stiff, and really continues to flesh out the world of other universes and gods not by just having another tournament as a bail-out cause you can't write a good story in between. @@DeicideBlues

Dragonball is the Japanese version of DC or Marvel comics.
James Marsters as the many different versions of Zamasu (ESPECIALLY Fused Zamasu) blew my mind. Way to win the crowd!

Jossue Arreola I agreed like MasakoX should continue with the DB R&R cause that was interesting and some of his what if's seems to make a great reboot like raditz turned good, Goku married Bulma, hercule train with roshi, Gine went to earth with Goku, and Bardock convinced the saiyans.
I kinda love that "that british abridged guy", as you were nicknamed by my friends that I introduced DBZA to, had a posh upbringing. now I can't help but imagine a really posh, but still fighting-obsessed goku.

That's a lie
The biggest thing was the GT hate. I loved GT because Super Saiyan 4 was real and not a rumor and I got so excited. But whenever i told ANYONE i loved the show, i got taken off forums, removed from groups, or just laughed at in public. It put a horrible taste in my mouth and I quit for a few years until Xenoverse came out and I was all for it. Love the video man ^^

The first saga may have been epically boring but as far as GT goes, better animation, understood Videl and Gohan way better than Super ever will, and the golden oozaru followed by SSJ4 is was honestly far more spectacular than anything super has had to offer thus yet. Also it took until now to make Broly canon, while it basically made wrath of the dragon canon (the dragon fist move is used multiple times) along with the garlic jr saga (supreme kai uses the sacred water). In other words it wasn't ignorant to things the series was built upon, unlike both Z Kai and Super. The only character who actually went backwards in development was Goten (that kid being girl crazy? yeah not believable at all), others maybe could've been more interesting but hey, at least they exist as not one-dimensional background characters.
I love GT too, I always found it pretty ridiculous on why others don’t like.Sure of course there were flaws in it.But people always hate it unreasonably.Actually GT and the non canon movies such as Coolers revenge and fusion reborn were very big reasons why I got into dragon ball.

While people tend to put filler strictly as "Stuff not covered by the manga", I would disagree.
Manga can have filler as well. There's another term for it, Padding.
It's just a waste of time that can be cut out and nothing of value to the overall story would be lost.
Cascade Hellsing I mean, anime filler isn’t canon but padding is. I’d say padding is worse, because both adaptations suffer.
Atleast funimation did a nice thing have Bryan Drummond come on as jelly Vegeta. A lot of people want a sequel now to it.
I don't know. A story like DB isn't really "about" any over arching narrative with every arc being, for the most part, highly self-contained and always struck me more about the journey than a destination. I'm not sure the Copy-Vegeta arc is much worse in that regard than any other arc in Super.
Admittedly , acknowledging I'm the lone minority, I actually liked the "Jelly Vegeta" arc and the Fake Namek-arc. So I may be slightly biased.

I have a few in mind.
1 is that there was a crazy dub war over which versions of the dub was better, Ocean Group or Funimation’s. I was a middleman and liked both equally.
Second is how the fandom forgot the manga existed. They tend to act like Goku was out of character in Super when it was his original characterization to begin with. Toei is at fault for making him inconsistent on his portrayal and I can see where Toriyama’s complains are coming from.

Bardock was badass in budokai 2. I found a combo he could do that did almost as much damage as a finisher

Universe 2 fighters and the 5 mins in dbz and the time drawn out in the tournament of power was a bit much tbh

Hmm, Gohan and Videl at the start of super. Just depressing. Of course he grew up but man, so dissapointing. And Videl basically just became wallpaper when she was legit a pretty sweet character at the end of Z.

Masako, you're exactly what got me into DB. I had never once watched anime, but my closest friend convinced me to watch DBZA. Your portrayal of Goku had me rolling laughing and wasn't long after that I tried the real show. I've been hooked ever since, and I got you to thank man. So I appreciate your introduction to my honestly favorite show(s) above all (yes I count DBZA as a separate show). Thank you, Masako!

I remember back in my young anime watching days, when the only way to watch certain animes was to get a copy of a fan sub sent to you on VHS, unless you actually knew Japanese. I remember later getting the Right Stuf catalog (in its early days when they had the thick catalogs that were done on a black and white news print, which me and my sis used to color in with color pencil), when that catalog came in it was the peek of our week and we would do as much research as we could before we would order the anime.
Also Nadesico was amazing, another great space anime was The Irresponsible Captain Tylor.
LOL i can agree with the episode re-run thing...so many shows did that. i always figured they didn't have new episodes so you gotta watch the whole damn thing again. Beast Wars did that a lot.

Though it's pretty much equilevant to what they did to fantastic four recently.
The movie was etched on to be done in a oddly quick time, and it was clear they had intentions and the budget was supposed to be far higher. Somehow it kept getting cut, scenes are acted so poorly it yet others seem fine like they weren't allowed a re-take. The film glossed over side events (like the tournament) and well it was a total ash-can copy to keep the rights, a $30 million dollar effort that was supposed to be a $100 million dollar effort.
Heck, it's still believed Krillin was in the script and he was cut when the budget was 1st cut (allegedly this happened multiple times).

The Potafu arc is canon as Goku refrenced it in the Black arc. Unless we're only counting events that happen in both the anime and manga as canon.
America Eagle it would be a mess because the manga blitzes through the entire tournament of power and the other arcs.
I miss Toonami in the UK. It was cancelled in favour of a Toddler TV Block/Channel called "Cartoonito"

I was still at school when Dragon Ball GT Ended in the UK, I never lost the love for Dragon Ball, but there were definitely times it was further from my mind, and OH MY GOD YOU MENTIONED THE CHANGING VOICE CAST! I was beginning to think I imagined it! I actually saw the Big Green dub version of The World's Strongest on TV at one point...I was so confused, and also scared that these might just be the voices now

What made me actually quit Dragonball was Super.
I love dragon ball but for me it's the fandom(especially the current modern fandom) hat has made me drift from the series

You may not have had patience when you were younger, but you certainly have humility and passion for what you and TFS does as well as the other voice actors and Toei. Your guys' love of the franchise is honestly what brought me back to what made my childhood so exciting, so thank you so much for that! I'm hoping that if the series I'm creating ever gets even somewhat big, I want it to have a good relationship with the fans since working together to make everyone happy in the end sounds so much better than having any animosity towards such wonderful supporters

@@origialtych But it's still the ending of dragonball z and sadly it would be very like goku to forget to come home and get caught up training. So it sort of soured his character for me for a long time until the internet became common and i learnt goku was actually always like that and was changed to be more heroic for the dub.
Yeah, it sucked whenever TFS went down. You guys behind DBZA tinkered with the story so it made more sense but really funny personalities that just, for the most part, have funny interactions. Have to admit your Goku is better by the way but the muffin thing was when Namek blew up... XD I can't make sense of that but still love it. Awesome performances by you guys and the cast. DBZA feels like it just delivers more than the original. I still like it but the fact that you guys can make it work so well and piece it even better together than the actual writer/writers of the DBZ series.
I might pick-up the Martian Successor Nadesico series, seems like a fun watch. Thanks for the tip Masako.
Really great hearing this from you how it was when you started with DBZA. Me and my friend are still working on Season 1 of dubbing it into Swedish. It is not our biggest priority so we make maybe 1 episode a year. But we still had trouble from TOEI who blocked some of the episodes and we are trying to fight for them but unsure how. So we are going googledrive for now. Hopefully we will ge to finish season 1 and make the Christmast Tree of might and the Bardock special.

Man, this is a bit off topic, but I am so glad we have the internet and guys like you nowadays masako. I don't think I could have been a fan in your era. It really makes me appreciate the small things like knowing air schedules and episode counts, discussions and theories. I could have been alive at any time, but I get to be alive in a time when Goku and masako are just one click or tap away. Lucky us!
For me it had to be just growing up and exploring, followed by getting back into it thanks to you guys which I am genuinely thankful for, but then the whole goku and vegeta being the only ones allowed to do anything, U.I in general irks me and the general fandom like their overall reaction to kale and caulifa being overblown. But I still have my love for it to this day.
Dragon Ball Super. It got me to finally give up the series, for just how terribly regressive Goku became as a character. The longer it went on, the dumber he behaved, and the less he seemed to care about risking the lives of everyone around him, in exchange for finding someone he could punch real good.
That, and Bulma. I grew to genuinely despise Bulma over the course of the franchise, from the first episode she was introduced in, attempting to gun down Goku because he was upset she ran him over with her car. As time went on, she steadily became more and more of a Mary Sue, with everyone loving her despite her genuinely toxic personality. She manipulates everyone, claims credit for things she didn't come up with, is physically and verbally abusive, and the only time she was ever given comeuppance for her behavior was in Battle of Gods, and we were seemingly supposed to view Beerus as the bad guy for smacking her across the yard after she went after him in a drunken, petulant fit, when honestly I feel like he should of just erased her, considering he has done so for entire PLANETS for less.
I still appreciate Dragon Ball from afar, but I've lost my ability to fully embrace it over the years, after so many bad decisions from a story telling standpoint, and how certain characters were wasted or turned into jokes. (Videl, completely squandered. Chichi, nothing but an abusive one-note stereotypical joke.) But that doesn't mean I'd ever tell anyone not to enjoy the series, because it still has plenty of great stuff in it, even if it's no longer my cup of tea, so to speak.

@@momowoods2859 I'm guessing it's not a fully legal site, and it's likely in Japanese. I stick purely to the dub, personally. Not a fan of the Japanese voices for the vast majority of the cast. (Goku's family especially.)

When the channel went down, I was so damn pissed it happened and it also kinda made me appreciate content nowadays since stuff like this happens way more now then back then. Yeah, it's a climb and still is to this day but at the end, i'm still a Dragon Ball fan.

MasakoX, Lawrence, you are awesome. I had very little knowledge of the show, outside of what I watched while babysitting my neighbor's sons in the 90s. I never gave it much thought, until I met my husband, and he gave me his prized DBZ shirt to sleep in, while we were dating.
Fast forward to 2018, when I discovered TFS, and it sparked a new love for us. We dug up all of the episodes on our external hard drive, and introduced DBZ to our daughters (7 & 13). It's amazing how it just makes them happy.
Your videos are conversations my husband and I have. I thought we were strange for delving that deeply into a cartoon, but we love it.

Dragon Ball GT almost made me wanna quit in its first arc.

#2- omg yes masako same goes for me here in newfoundland canada when i was growing up as a kid i hated having episode line ups all jumbled making following the story line impossible for my young mind. not to mention that over here dragon ball z only came on at around 11 at night so remembering what happened last wasnt easy if it wasnt in order

In my life there have been exactly 3 times that I've almost quit Dragon ball.
3. The ending of Dragon ball Z. Like most kids I watched Dragon Ball Z every chance I got through Toonami and even as a kid the last episode was a giant disappointment. Goku is finally reunited with his family and we even got to see him interact with his granddaughter Pan for the five minutes that it lasted and it all ends with him going off to do more training and leaving his family behind again. Needless to say I hated it. Ironically enough it was actually GT that saved the series for me. Unlike most fans I do not hate GT and granted it's not as good as Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z, but it's ending was a hell of a lot better than Z could ever hope to be.
2. The lack of Dragon Ball in the late 2000s. After the end of Dragon Ball GT I had been hearing rumors and speculation that there was going to be another series called Dragon Ball AF. I was excited and I was eagerly waiting for it to come to our shores in the following years. The release of Dragon Ball Evolution, the loss of Toonami, and Dragon Ball Z Kai did not help matters. No don't get me wrong I don't hate Dragon Ball Z Kai but I thought it was going to be another series instead of a HD remaster. Not helping matters was the fact that they only covered up to the cell Saga and some of the new voice actors just couldn't replace the roles of the original cast for me. At the time the only thing that kept the franchise alive was the video games. I have read the Dragon Ball AF fan manga and that feels like the progression that we should have gotten with a new Dragon Ball anime.
1. The Dragon Ball super anime. Like most fans as soon as I heard that there was going to be another Dragonball anime I was hyped, however the execution was disappointing to put it mildly. I watched the episodes as they came out in Japan and after making it to the end of the Future Trunks Arc I gave up on the series completely. The new characters annoyed me more than anything and I absolutely hate the designs of the new transformations. Super Saiyan God just looks like Kaioken 2.0, Super Saiyan blue just makes me think of Sonic the Hedgehog and Ultra instinct looks interesting but not as good as Super Saiyan 4. I fully understand the in Universe reason for the Transformations but looking at them just makes me think of previous Transformations with a new coat of paint. It makes me think that they had too much over stock of Base Goku and Super Saiyan Goku action figures so they just slapped on a new coat of paint and marketed them as three brand-new transformations. They feel like a regression and as such I will pick Super Saiyan 4 over these new Transformations any day of the week. The only thing that still keeps me interested in the series is the Broly movie and the Super Dragon Ball Heroes anime. The Dragon Ball super manga is a better continuation of the story. The video games still keep the series alive for me and I'm hoping for a GT reboot in the future that brings back Super Saiyan 4 but only time will tell.
The fan service almost made me quit
I had never seen anything dragonball related until a friend showed me abridged in 2009 and now I’ve seen every possible piece of DBZ content I can find multiple times. You and TFS being fans made me a fan. So, thank you
In regards to number 2, if I'm not mistaken, even in the States Toonami had reruns before a new episode showed up back in the late 90's at the time too.
the Buu saga made me stop being a fan for a while, it was just being to long.

I didn't find the show until the Buu Saga was only a few episodes from being done.
Never once seen the original Dragon Ball (yet), but I've seen all of Z by this point in my life, and all of Super. Pretty excited to experience the original Dragon Ball for the first time at some point.
I first got in the show in 2009 and I had one aquantance who showed me the original series and it took my breath away but I had no way to watch the show I've only seen like 4 episodes but then I discovered dbza and it gave me the will to keep going with the series thank you massakox

Got to give you points for Nadesico, and a pretty safe bet you also watched the rare seasons of anime that appeared on the Sci-Fi channel.
I just hope you didn't make my mistake where I set a vid to record the anime movies that were on past midnight, 12 year old me was not prepared for it. :p
My introduction to DBZ was DBZA so I never really had a problem with Fake Namek. Im not old enough to have same the same internet and TV problems as late in life as you, but I can definitely relate to the issue of TV stations just playing random episodes rather than playing episodes in order, to the point that probably somewhere around 2012 I just gave up on television entirely and started watching shows online
