- In his reaction to LeBron James winning Player of the Month in February, Doug Gottlieb reveals to Chris Broussard and Nick Wright why he'd rather have Larry Bird, Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan on the ball at the end of the game rather than LeBron James, citing that The King is not as clutch as some of his predecessors.

Has LeBron surpassed Jordan as the best player in NBA history?

First Things First: Cris Carter and Nick Wright no way
No. Next question
Lebron and Jordan are way too different to be compared. Jordan is more competitive and goes with instinct or gut feeling. While Lebron analysis teams and players, if anyone scores a basket he will remember the person and the location that they scored from. Lebron is also focused on stat padding an example is when he was frustrated at the end of their game of the Spurs where hood passed the ball instead of shooting it when he was an assist away from a triple-double. The biggest issue with Lebron is that people always try to compare him to other players which adds pressure to him. Also, people who are similar to nick is one of the reasons that he has a lot of haters
monte star well said 👍
Larry Bird:
Better shooter
Better passer
Better free throw shooter
Better rebounder
Better competitor
LeBron James:

Bron is a better passer !!!

Lebron is a better rebounder to be fair. Especially when he commits to it. Its arguable that Lebron is his equal in competitive aspect. I do think Bird was better but let's be fair to LeBron
@@evensteven7429 the game has changed. There aren't any rebounders when compared to Bird's day. LeBron outrebounding Robin Lopez is not the same as compared to Bird vs Moses Malone.
Doug dropping the mic on poor Nick
And now everyone is talking about mj v lbj as the goat while bird isnt even considering :)
He also took his team from 29 wins to 61 as a rookie.
Jordan never flopped, bird never flopped. Lebron both flopped and quit; it’s a matter of character
Did you happen to miss the two times Jordan quit basketball completely in his prime?
Jon Smith yeah because of personal reasons. And when he came back he got another 3 peat.
@@whypascal Jordan quit because he didn't want the pressure of being Jordan anymore. Twice. If you're about to bring up his father, don't bother. There's plenty of documentation that he was planning to retire before that. He was 30, and he needed out due to simple burnout.
@Kenneth Erickson Quitting is quitting. Jordan did it twice. Lebron has twice gone to bad teams for the challenge. That's not quitting.
And Lebron blames hes team like a baby
Nick Wright is always lying about stats , Larry Bird Average 24 pts . He made up some stats last also with his MJ vs LBJ comparison saying LBJ average more steals and blocks than Jordan....that was lie .
Lord Magnetic he also said LeBron has a better game winning shot percentage in the post season that Jordan. Mike is 50% in post season one minute left and/or game winning/tying shots. Just sayin. Total game winning shots in Mike’s career... 29. Total fro Bron, 21. Regular season and post.
@@kpag3030 lol, he needs to be fact checked in real time like someone else we know.
And in an era with DDDDDefense, and with less scoring...

+2nd EZRA They're also doing some very selective omissions. Remember the 8-point playoff games they brought up that Lebron wouldn't be able to get away with? The other stats for a Larry Bird 8-pt game: 13 rebounds, 10 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks. Shame on you, Larry Legend! LOL. Maxwell averaged 17, 9 and 2.8 assists with 1 block. And bird played more minutes than Maxwell..... go learn this sport properly u probably think harden is nice lmfao
Larry Bird never complained about his teammates when they lose. He just called them sissies and they responded. Bird a better leader than Bron.
Bird also didn't pass the buck to teammates in the biggest moments because he was afraid of failure. LeBron did that for 18 years.
@@thsu8 NO he just let a fole player win finals MVP

@@daverobertson623 Meh. It was his second year in the league, and he could have easily been given that MVP award. He averaged 15ppg, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists for that series. Maxwell was getting a lot of assists from Larry. And Maxwell was more than a role player, he was a really good player. LeBron has had the better career, but most people who know both players would rather give the ball to Larry in the final 24 seconds with the game on the line. He's tougher than LeBron and has a killer instinct. You never hear anyone make the joke: "Why don't you ever ask Larry Bird for change for a dollar? TH3GPS Bird averaged 19.3 shots per game for his career. LeBron? 19.6. Nearly identical. It’s not that LeBron didn’t pass or take way more shots than Bird. He simply was more efficient and scored more. Period.
Nick Wrong never saw Bird play, and is too young to realize that in 1986 almost everyone lined up and called Bird GOAT, before Mike became Mike.
Jordan was a different player from day 1. He couldn't get in the "best player" argument early on because of injury and the team around him. He was that good. The way you made the list of best in the business was winning. Jordan knew this and sacrificed stats to do just that as he went on to win 6 Championships. Larry was GREAT. Jordan was just better. No GOAT argument in '86 when Jordan had only played his rookie season. I think anyone who knew basketball then also knew Jordan was the "ONE" by 1990.

Yup. Bird would be role player at best. Too physical and not quick enough- he would disappear in an upbeat offense and would be ineffective in today’s isolation offenses. He was great for his time (however brief)... LeBron would be a powerhouse in every NBA generation
@@justmike75 no offense my friend but I respectively disagree with you 😂, to say that Bird would just be some pushover in today's league is in my opinion ridiculous and tbh a little insulting. And to think LeBron would just breeze through any generation is ridiculous too, teams like the bad boy pistons would beat that man down to his very core, the rules play to his favor today, the team's aren't stacked with talent anymore, and the game is less physical plain and simple.
@@justmike75 Dude Larry Bird is one of the greatest one on one players of all time!
@@drieey I'd take Magic every day and twice on Tuesdays over Larry. Larry played the game well in his time, Magic revolutionized the game. Same with Lebron... he's a game revolutionizer/ not just a good era player.
@@noadmre7493 I get the whole generation argument, but MJ eventually got past the bad boy Pistons and Lebron is so much more of a physical specimen than MJ. And ya the game isn't as physical but Lebron has been playing in the NBA since he was 18 w/o major injury (oh and over the past 9 seasons he has played to every final)- I think you underestimate Lebron's physicality. But really growing up a Lake show fan, I haven't seen a guy take over a game the way Lebron does since Magic or MJ. No offense to Larry, but I find the Magic/Lebron or MJ/Lebron comparisons to have much more teeth than Larry/Lebron. Don't get me wrong, Larry was great but top 5 he is not: MJ, Magic, Kareem, Wilt... and honestly I think Lebron is in there at 1 or 2.
Michael Jordan played defense (he won defensive player of the year and was runner up other years). Lebron will occasionally play D when he wants a chase down block to make the highlight reel. Can't be considered the best of all time if you're not a two-way player.
Brian Nguyen was also like 10 time all defensive 1st team
Brian Nguyen LeBron made flopping famous. I guess everyone has forgotten about the kids Lebronning while he was in Miami
Brian Nguyen Lebron made all nba 1st team defense every year he was in miami and a couple years in cleveland to. Hes always been a good defender but because of his size and what he has to do on offense he can always put 100% effort into defense. He was definitely a better defender than bird and can guard all 5 positions if he has to, something neither mike nor bird could do.
@@francisdelfino2188 lebrons defensive rank 304
LeBron is a help defender
Lebron has the athleticism advantage over Bird, that’s about it. Bird was a (way) better shooter, rebounder, team player, and better in the clutch (maybe all time). I know Lebron is a good passer but I’d even give Bird the edge. Also all Lebron does it bully his way to the paint, zero finesse.
Christopher Dones bird is a beast
Christopher Dones , there will be another physical specimen to match LeBron but there will never be another player with the basketball genius of Larry Bird.
Bird had an elite special talent to play basketball, maybe the best of all time, in terms of pure talent, way more than Lebron James. Lebron James is amazing, and has a lot of talent, but his game depends way too much on athleticism. Lebron hasn't even developed a reliable post game, even thought he can get a lot of mismatches by using it. Bird was a better shooter, rebounder, passer, and even defender. Yes he probably is not a better 1 vs 1 defender. But he is a great defender, way underrated. A lot of people say that Lebron is way better than Bird defensively, but the stats doesn't show that.
Blocks per game - Bird 0.8, Lebron 0.8. Tie
Steals per game - Bird 1.7, Lebron 1.6. Small advantage to Bird.
Defensive Rating (point allowed every 100 possesions) - Bird 101 - Lebron 102. Small Advantage Bird
Defensive Win share - Bird 59 (0.001713 defensive win shares per minute) - Lebron 64.4 (0.001454 defensive win share per minute) - Clear Advantage Bird.
Defensive Box Plus Minus - Bird 2.5, Lebron 1.9. Clear Advantage Bird.
So, why so many people keep saying and repeating that Lebron is a better defender than Bird???
And last, Bird was way more clutch and a better leader.
also, I think it was Pat Riley who once said, last shot of a game for the win i´d give it to Jordan, for my life i´d give it to Bird, he is Larry Legend, most clutch player of all time and the best trash talker of all time.
Bird was definitely the better passer.

Larry bird wasnt on the same planet as lbj defensively, 5x all nba defensive for a reason. Larry didnt have the speed, the athletecism, the power i mean not to disrespect bird but at this point lbj surpassed him.

It's hard to believe that hardly anybody that saw Bird play thinks LeBron is better. And all the LeBron children think it's hate. Maybe it's something to how great that guy was. And Nick Wright is so dumb he said LeBron has had the best 8 year stretch in NBA history. Um, Russell won 8 rings in a row. Magic had a 8 year stretch he won more than 3 rings. Jordan had a better 8 year stretch and he played baseball for a year and a half and go 6 rings. LeBron has not done any of that.

Nicolas brick just think if Jordan and bird where in their prime in this era. Lol
moneyaat nick says that bout lebrons career every show
His 8 year stretch that Nick claims is the best ever is laughable. I even think LeBron is the 2nd greatest ever but like you said Magic had an 8 year stretch where he won 4 rings, went to 8 finals, and won 3 MVPs, Bill Russell won 8 in a row and won multiple MVPs, Jordan won 6 in 8 years with 3 MVPs, Shaq won 4 titles and an MVP, KObe won 3 titles and an MVP. Not saying all those were better. Shaq and Kobe's weren't better but Magic, MJ, and Bill Russell had better stretches for sure.
I’d take Bird any day, Magic, and Michael. Bird was the best in a clutch and making his team better.
And when Bird got to the end of the game he wanted the ball so he could drive the dagger through your heart and twist it a few times just for good measure just to let you know he was the one who did it.

Jordan fans do the same thing tho
LBJ paints with Crayons. Magic, Bird and MJ painted masterpieces on the court. Bird's passing was better. LBJ just dribbles then tosses the ball to someone camping out at the 3 point line to collect his assists. The wrap around passes of Nash, Bird and Magic were necessary because of the traffic in the lane. LBJ made his big extend the floor to make the game easier for him. Larry, there will never, ever be another Larry Bird."
- Magic Johnson, 1992 speech made in Boston in honor of Larry Bird
“Larry has a way of making everybody he comes into contact with a better person. A pure American of the highest character as reported in Sports Illustrated: "Bob Woolf, Larry Bird's attorney, brings out a hotel bill dated April 6, 1979. .... Now, the most illuminating thing in this whole saga is that hotel bill from 1979. You see, except for the basic room charge and the tax, there was nothing else on it. No room service, no restaurant charge, no long-distance phone calls, no nothing. Having dealt with many other athletes, Woolf naturally assumed that the kid would charge at will. But that wasn't how Larry Joe Bird was raised back in French Lick, Indiana. ‘Larry has a way of making everybody he comes into contact with a better person,’ Woolf says. ‘If you think the Larry Bird on the court has character and is unselfish-well, off the court he's even more so.’ Among those who know Bird well, the same catalog of qualities is cited again and again: honest, loyal, steadfast, dependable-his existence shaped by the contradictory, almost mystical ability to be the cynosure, yet always to contribute to those around him. Mel Daniels, who was an assistant coach at Indiana State when Bird played there, said it best: ‘It's like a piece of Larry goes to each player by the things he does.’ Tony Clark, a Terre Haute radio executive who grew up with Bird, says, ‘Larry epitomizes the word friend. Do you understand that?’ Yes. ‘Then you really don't have to know anything else about him.’” (Sports Illustrated 1988, Frank Deford, “A Player For The Ages,” Sports Illustrated, Time, Inc., New York, New York, March 21, 1988)
"The guy was a basketball genius who had a mask of "a hick from French Lick" out as his calling card. But if you believed that for one second, you were going to get beaten."

Larry Bird Greatest Passer of All Time
czcams.com/video/CExjzyTRxnQ/video.html
After Larry learned of Magic's diagnosis he was one of, if not the first player to call Magic and talk with him. Larry may have been his rival on the court but he is a friend off the court and that means the world to Magic. They got to know each other of the court and they don't have to talk to each other every day but their friendship is as strong as one can imagine.

Cedric Maxwell in 81 finals scored 10 pts in game 1 and 6 pts in game 2. There is your match for Bird's 8 pts in game 3 ( a big Celtic win) and 8 pts in game 4. Bird was better in 4 of the 6 games. Maxwell stats were 17.7 pts 9.5 reb and 2.8 assists. Bird was 15.3 pts 15.3 reb and 7.0 assists. Bird hated the media and was a terrible interview. Maxwell was much more engaging, quotable and friendly. Moses Malone average 15.7 rebounds in that series and Bird almost matched Moses, his team needed it. Bird should have won the 81 finals MVP, he put game 6 away with several big shots and plays.

Reasons for Bird edging LeBron:
1) Both of their numbers are give and take but bird got them without having to be ball dominant.
2) you simply can't compare the 80s east with anything LeBron has played in ..in the East... Ever. LeBron's in the west now, how's he doing?
3)all the players that they compare LeBron to, PLAYED AT THE SAME TIME IN BIRDS ERA. Those guys give bird the nod all the time to this day. Kobe agrees too.
4) Rule changes. Put Bird at the line like LeBron, and bird would average 29-30 ppg.
5) No bigs to get smashed while going to the bucket.. no defensive big men until about 3 years ago with Anthony Davis, and a brief period with Dwight Howard.
6) LeBron played only one defensive player of the year in the playoffs, and lost.(Kawahi Leonard)
Bird played against Rodman, Cooper, Hakeem(tried him in the 86 finals, Hakeem said "that's a baaadd man" , Moncrief(underrated defender of all time), Pippen(not in the playoffs) and they all said he was a nightmare to guard and bird won.
How is he doing in L.A., you mean? Where I use to live..., well, you'll find King James living fine, like the King! And, oh, by the way, that thing he does part-time..., What do you call it..., professional basketball? You're right. He could do more, and better, full-time. However, it's like that. It's L.A.
You must admit, no one, except for the inimical Wilt Chamberlain, to my knowledge possesses the skill, power, heft and muscle...as does the King, who was probably given these formidable gifts in the way of compensate for the King's lack of a "proper family," at birth..., maybe. Of course, no one is perfect. But in terms of how well the young man presents himself yet, outside the ring.... Well, can anyone name all the many other players out there may come closer to his mark for the weight of scrutiny he bears since, when 15?
As far as this "ball dominant" thing, surely too much at times, and I must agree. However, dominate just as necessary at other times for necessary reasons. A King must be liberal with demonstrations of his King-ness, perhaps the more as time goes by.
Long live the King! And prayers be plenty for the speedy, successful return of the Prince, aka, Kevin Durant, a proven true Golden Warrior for all time of the Golden State. (Athletes should also be rewarded for their over all character, which should weigh as heavy in our evaluations, my view. is the fine point.) Peace.

Bird, Jordan, Kareem, Ewing, Pippen, Barkley etc played in a much more physical and demanding league.
I agree with Doug. Context is important. Seeing someone play as it happens in proper context gives your argument more credibility. How is Chris gonna call Cedric Maxwell (who's Jersey is retired) a role player!?? Cornbread Maxwell was a first or second option on that celtic team back in 81' and the leader while Bird had only had a year under his belt and McHale wasn't even good yet... The disrespect!
Broussard was being misleading by saying "Bird had 2 eight-point games" in 1981:
- In those 2 games, Larry found other ways to help his team a lot:
The scoring was spread out on that team .... Larry only took 11 shots in one of those 8-pt game.... and Maxwell the leading scorer only took 16 shots. Larry didn't need to score to influence that game or other games: He had 10 assists & 13 Rebs even if he wasn't scoring much with Reid guarding him.
The Celtics were up by over 10 by halftime and wound up winning by over 20 so Larry didn't need to score for his team to win.... and those teammates weren't AllStars or Hall of Famers - stars back then just looked for the open man and passed the ball - not like the hero ball of today where players are trying to impress people with stats.
Bird had 11 rebs and 7 assists in to go with 8 points then next game. But then broke out of his funk by game 6 with 27 points.
And even then, it was only Bird's 2nd season - which shows his maturity in understanding how to influence a basketball game, especially over Lebron who was in like year 6 in 2011 when LBJ lost to the Dallas Mavs and still was ringless.
Broussard: I've rooted for Lebron... he lost my support by the way he played listlessly in Cleveland in 2010, and the way he acted entitled in Miami in 2011, then lost to the Mavs that year....
CORNBREAD HAS SAID ON MANY OCCASIONS THAT BIRD MADE HIM & THE OTHER CELTIC PLAYERS BETTER THEREFORE BIRD MADE THE CELTICS AS A TEAM BETTER! THAT IS WHAT A SUPERSTAR DOES! I DON'T CARE WHAT SPORT IT IS! PERIOD.
Here is the difference between Larry and Lebron and why i consider Bird the GOAT..
He beat
The Sixers with Dr J Moses Malone and Charles Barkley
The Hawks with Dominique Wilkins , Kevin Willis and Doc Rivers
The Pistons with Isiah Thomas Joe Dumars and Bill Lambeer
The Bulls with Jordan Pipen and Horace Grant (23-11 regular season and 14 straight games and 6-0 in playoffs
The Knicks with Patrick Ewing Trent Tucker and Bernard King
The Rockets with Hakeen Sampson and Robert Reid
The Trail Blazers with Clyde Drexler Jerome Kersey and Sam Bowie
The Bucks with Sidney Moncrif Paul Pressey and Terry Cummings
And last but not least
The Lakers with Magic Kareem and Worthy....
He also beat all others teams with great players...
So, Can anyone tell me who Lebron has faced and defeated that are better than those teams?
Ed Cortorreal I believe Mj is the Goat in basketball but I love everything you just said straight facts!!!
I respect your opinion, but Larry is a GOAT killer....He beat Jordan 23-11 in regular season and 14 of those games were straight. 6-0 in playoffs..Swept him twice...And by the way...Bird played with back injuries since 1986...
73-9
Ed Cortorreal MJ is the GOAT. Larry's Celtics was already stacked up when MJ joined the NBA. His team the the superteam of the 80's. and even without help from his team, MJ took Bulls to playoffs, and forced a 3ple overtime with Celtics. Larry was great. But MJ is the GOAT.
his whole starting lineup was filled with hall of famers
Bird had a higher free throw percentage and that's the only thing that hasn't changed since Bird Retired. If Bird played today he would still be the greatest. The League was about to go bankrupt until Magic and Bird brought millions of new fans to the NBA. Teams were matched much better across the board. The game is just threes and dunks now. Now guys take five steps and its not travelling like it was in the 80's.

Larry Bird is one of the most intelligent, if not the most intelligent basketball players ever, he's accomplished, secure, knowledgeable about history, context, and is one of the most honest players, and he said LeBron is better. Considering Larry Bird probably knows and understands the game of Larry Bird and even said LeBron is close to Jordan. I'll take Larry's word for it.
that's called an argument from authority. it's a logic fallacy
in other words, it's not stating facts to support an argument, but pointing at an authority figure or expert, and saying, 'well, if this guy says so, it must be true'
the problem with thinking that way is, anybody can be wrong. Einstein was wrong about science...
for my argument vs yer non-argument, I would simply say Bird won 3 rings and 3 straight MVP's and THEN posted back-to-back 50/40/90 seasons
it's a better prime than James
Bird is the only career 24 ppg , 10 rpg, 6apg in the HISTORY of NBA.
If NBA refs called traveling violations more strictly, as they should have been, LeBron’s scoring would have dropped by five points. The man gets off more in this area than anyone in the history of the NBA.
Also, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, and Kevin Love’s stats all dropped once they joined LeBron’s team (Kyrie Irving’s numbers stayed about the same), so where did this “he makes everyone around him better” argument come from?
Larry Bird made the bottom-of-division team into the best in the conference in his rookie season and won the championship in the next. Jordan never lost at the finals. LeBron? He whined and jumped around the league to make the Superteams, even had coaches changed to his liking, to win the same number of championships as Bird, with the lower success rate than MJ. THERE IS NO COMPARISON.

If you cannot logically explain your position, at least know some manner.
when you spread stats on every teammate you make all of them better as simple as that when you use often the 24 shot clock to the max individual numbers will go down but the offensive rotations will take effect on all 5 players increasing their confidence to shoot as soon as they be open have you checked the stats of Kevin Love's teammates on Minnesota and Bosh's in Toronto every blind Lebron hater will omit that conveniently.

Bird made the other four players on his team a threat, and opened up more options for the team. His defense, passing and rebounding were better overall, and he sacrificed more of himself ( example, 2-3 hour shoot arounds before every game, running the stadium stairs, etc) for the team.

These guys like skip and this other clown let you get away with saying larry was no factor in the 81 finals because they don't do there homework.

Also the series Broussard is talking about was 1981, Larrys second year in the league. I agree with what he is saying if Lebron did that NOW, but if he had been in that position to do it with Cleveland in his second year it wouldn't have been held against him.
Captain Chinook the point Chris is making is if LeBron averaged 15 points in the finals no matter what the other stats were (I agree with you, that stat line is pretty solid) he would be CRUCIFIED by fans, analysts, etc.

Kangman02 Larry Bird by a lot of critics is considered to be one of the 5 greatest players in NBA history. Even, back then, when he was in his prime, some considered Bird the best player of all time. For me, Gottlieb and others, Bird was a better player than Lebron James. Lebron is better than Bird in athleticism, going directly to the basket (as a result of his athleticism), and dribling, and that's it. Bird is a way better shooter, better passer, better rebounder, and you can even make a case for Bird being a better defender (Bird has equal bpg, more spg, better defensive rating per 100 possesions, better defensive win shares per season, better defensive box plus minus). Bird was a way more clutch than Lebron and a better leader. Bird had a higher basketball IQ and was a far better pure basketball talent than Lebron James.

This is like the Brady/Manning debate for me. Even though Brady has elite skills most would argue that Manning skills as a QB were superior. But what makes Brady the GOAT is the combination of skills AND intangibles. LeBron may be a better NBA player physically than Jordan but Jordan had the skill AND the intangibles.
tmoney360 couldn't have said it better myself these guys don't understand that talent won't get you half as far as heart and will to win nobody in The history of professional sports wanted it more than Michael Jordan
if Bird just had 12 seasons at the NBA, reduce Lebron's to 12 seasons and compare it with Bird's. Let's compare efficiency.
It ain't lbj fault he take care of his body in year 17 and bird stop at 13
I would looove ta punch that Nick Wright dude, OUT!! So inviting!!
Also, Larry Bird was twice the player lebron was.

Bird got the whole team involved in the game not just him
