  • In his reaction to LeBron James winning Player of the Month in February, Doug Gottlieb reveals to Chris Broussard and Nick Wright why he'd rather have Larry Bird, Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan on the ball at the end of the game rather than LeBron James, citing that The King is not as clutch as some of his predecessors.

Lebron and Jordan are way too different to be compared. Jordan is more competitive and goes with instinct or gut feeling. While Lebron analysis teams and players, if anyone scores a basket he will remember the person and the location that they scored from. Lebron is also focused on stat padding an example is when he was frustrated at the end of their game of the Spurs where hood passed the ball instead of shooting it when he was an assist away from a triple-double. The biggest issue with Lebron is that people always try to compare him to other players which adds pressure to him. Also, people who are similar to nick is one of the reasons that he has a lot of haters

Lebron James is amazing, and has a lot of talent, but his game depends way too much on athleticism. Lebron hasn't even developed a reliable post game, even thought he can get a lot of mismatches by using it. Bird was a better shooter, rebounder, passer, and even defender. Yes he probably is not a better 1 vs 1 defender. But he is a great defender, way underrated. A lot of people say that Lebron is way better than Bird defensively, but the stats doesn't show that.
Blocks per game - Bird 0.8, Lebron 0.8. Tie
Steals per game - Bird 1.7, Lebron 1.6. Small advantage to Bird.
Defensive Rating (point allowed every 100 possesions) - Bird 101 - Lebron 102. Small Advantage Bird
Defensive Win share - Bird 59 (0.001713 defensive win shares per minute) - Lebron 64.4 (0.001454 defensive win share per minute) - Clear Advantage Bird.
Defensive Box Plus Minus - Bird 2.5, Lebron 1.9. Clear Advantage Bird.
So, why so many people keep saying and repeating that Lebron is a better defender than Bird???
And last, Bird was way more clutch and a better leader.

And Nick Wright is so dumb he said LeBron has had the best 8 year stretch in NBA history. Um, Russell won 8 rings in a row. Magic had a 8 year stretch he won more than 3 rings. Jordan had a better 8 year stretch and he played baseball for a year and a half and go 6 rings. LeBron has not done any of that.

"Larry, you only told me one lie.
You said there will be another Larry Bird.
Larry, there will never, ever be another Larry Bird."
    - Magic Johnson, 1992 speech made in Boston in honor of Larry Bird
“Larry has a way of making everybody he comes into contact with a better person. A pure American of the highest character as reported in Sports Illustrated: "Bob Woolf, Larry Bird's attorney, brings out a hotel bill dated April 6, 1979. .... Now, the most illuminating thing in this whole saga is that hotel bill from 1979. You see, except for the basic room charge and the tax, there was nothing else on it. No room service, no restaurant charge, no long-distance phone calls, no nothing. Having dealt with many other athletes, Woolf naturally assumed that the kid would charge at will. But that wasn't how Larry Joe Bird was raised back in French Lick, Indiana. ‘Larry has a way of making everybody he comes into contact with a better person,’ Woolf says. ‘If you think the Larry Bird on the court has character and is unselfish-well, off the court he's even more so.’ Among those who know Bird well, the same catalog of qualities is cited again and again: honest, loyal, steadfast, dependable-his existence shaped by the contradictory, almost mystical ability to be the cynosure, yet always to contribute to those around him. Mel Daniels, who was an assistant coach at Indiana State when Bird played there, said it best: ‘It's like a piece of Larry goes to each player by the things he does.’ Tony Clark, a Terre Haute radio executive who grew up with Bird, says, ‘Larry epitomizes the word friend. Cedric Maxwell in 81 finals scored 10 pts in game 1 and 6 pts in game 2. There is your match for Bird's 8 pts in game 3 ( a big Celtic win) and 8 pts in game 4. Bird was better in 4 of the 6 games. Maxwell stats were 17.7 pts 9.5 reb and 2.8 assists. Bird was 15.3 pts 15.3 reb and 7.0 assists. Bird hated the media and was a terrible interview. Maxwell was much more engaging, quotable and friendly. Moses Malone average 15.7 rebounds in that series and Bird almost matched Moses, his team needed it. Bird should have won the 81 finals MVP, he put game 6 away with several big shots and plays.

    Reasons for Bird edging LeBron:
    1) Both of their numbers are give and take but bird got them without having to be ball dominant.
    2) you simply can't compare the 80s east with anything LeBron has played in ..in the East... Ever. LeBron's in the west now, how's he doing?
3)all the players that they compare LeBron to, PLAYED AT THE SAME TIME IN BIRDS ERA. Those guys give bird the nod all the time to this day. Kobe agrees too.
    4) Rule changes. Put Bird at the line like LeBron, and bird would average 29-30 ppg.
    5) No bigs to get smashed while going to the bucket.. no defensive big men until about 3 years ago with Anthony Davis, and a brief period with Dwight Howard.
    6) LeBron played only one defensive player of the year in the playoffs, and lost.(Kawahi Leonard)
Bird played against Rodman, Cooper, Hakeem(tried him in the 86 finals, Hakeem said "that's a baaadd man" , Moncrief(underrated defender of all time), Pippen(not in the playoffs) and they all said he was a nightmare to guard and bird won.

How is he doing in L.A., you mean? Where I use to live..., well, you'll find King James living fine, like the King! And, oh, by the way, that thing he does part-time..., What do you call it..., professional basketball? You're right. He could do more, and better, full-time. However, it's like that. It's L.A.
You must admit, no one, except for the inimical Wilt Chamberlain, to my knowledge possesses the skill, power, heft and muscle...as does the King, who was probably given these formidable gifts in the way of compensate for the King's lack of a "proper family," at birth..., maybe. Of course, no one is perfect. But in terms of how well the young man presents himself yet, outside the ring.... Well, can anyone name all the many other players out there may come closer to his mark for the weight of scrutiny he bears since, when 15?
As far as this "ball dominant" thing, surely too much at times, and I must agree. However, dominate just as necessary at other times for necessary reasons. A King must be liberal with demonstrations of his King-ness, perhaps the more as time goes by.
Long live the King! And prayers be plenty for the speedy, successful return of the Prince, aka, Kevin Durant, a proven true Golden Warrior for all time of the Golden State. (Athletes should also be rewarded for their over all character, which should weigh as heavy in our evaluations, my view. is the fine point.) Peace.

      @MrLarryLessor Před 5 lety

Broussard was being misleading by saying "Bird had 2 eight-point games" in 1981:
      - In those 2 games, Larry found other ways to help his team a lot:
The scoring was spread out on that team .... Larry only took 11 shots in one of those 8-pt game.... and Maxwell the leading scorer only took 16 shots. Larry didn't need to score to influence that game or other games: He had 10 assists & 13 Rebs even if he wasn't scoring much with Reid guarding him.
The Celtics were up by over 10 by halftime and wound up winning by over 20 so Larry didn't need to score for his team to win.... and those teammates weren't AllStars or Hall of Famers - stars back then just looked for the open man and passed the ball - not like the hero ball of today where players are trying to impress people with stats.
Bird had 11 rebs and 7 assists in to go with 8 points then next game. But then broke out of his funk by game 6 with 27 points.
And even then, it was only Bird's 2nd season - which shows his maturity in understanding how to influence a basketball game, especially over Lebron who was in like year 6 in 2011 when LBJ lost to the Dallas Mavs and still was ringless.
Broussard: I've rooted for Lebron... he lost my support by the way he played listlessly in Cleveland in 2010, and the way he acted entitled in Miami in 2011, then lost to the Mavs that year....

Also, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, and Kevin Love’s stats all dropped once they joined LeBron’s team (Kyrie Irving’s numbers stayed about the same), so where did this “he makes everyone around him better” argument come from?
Larry Bird made the bottom-of-division team into the best in the conference in his rookie season and won the championship in the next. Jordan never lost at the finals. LeBron? He whined and jumped around the league to make the Superteams, even had coaches changed to his liking, to win the same number of championships as Bird, with the lower success rate than MJ. Bird was a better rebounder, passer, shooter before his body started to fail on him. Lebron right now is playing worse defense than larry bird has ever played in his career..larry bird took a sub 20 win celtics team to 60+ wins the next year and he is far more clutch and had way higher intangibles. Kangman02 Larry Bird by a lot of critics is considered to be one of the 5 greatest players in NBA history. Even, back then, when he was in his prime, some considered Bird the best player of all time. For me, Gottlieb and others, Bird was a better player than Lebron James. Lebron is better than Bird in athleticism, going directly to the basket (as a result of his athleticism), and dribling, and that's it. Bird is a way better shooter, better passer, better rebounder, and you can even make a case for Bird being a better defender (Bird has equal bpg, more spg, better defensive rating per 100 possesions, better defensive win shares per season, better defensive box plus minus). Bird was a way more clutch than Lebron and a better leader. Bird had a higher basketball IQ and was a far better pure basketball talent than Lebron James.
