MegaCapitalG: Without a doubt, the most infamous and arguably worst banlist in Yu-Gi-Oh history.
Konami: Challenge accepted
I'm glad people enjoyed this little Yugioh history lesson . I'll plan about 1 a month maybe in the future.
After that cubic shit... Nah, it was a good video. It actually felt like a video you tried and put effort on, talking about a topic that could get good discussions.
was that a shin chan reference i hear
You gotta redo the video buddy
The new list blew this one out of the water
Need more Yugioh history focused videos!
You should do more of these like talking about each format, what decks were played, what combos were crazy, etc.
Yes please! Yu-Gi-Oh history is fascinating!
True! Especially because all I did until I found DN in 2013 was play whatever I could slap in my deck with my friends.
not surprised after that cubic shit
Ulti-Apelio That meme is as dead as Slaydra's channel.
Celza Yamuto OH SHIT!!
Celza Yamuto so its alive and well
Ulti-Apelio the worst banned list is the one where ulti kannahawk got limited
Lordofthings1 yeah dude cannahawk and E-tele :(
This was a pretty good video. Well researched and well written. I'd be happy to see more videos of this quality.
well accept for the fact that he forgot Brionac was still around, I'd say not thoroughly researched enough, because that's a major hindsight
Jason Miller stfu
Eli_ Knows Pour the salt
Jason Miller you allready did hence why I'm telling you to stfu. take my advice.
Already btw not all ready
I fucking loved Plant Synchro, which is why I held a grudge for years against Inzektors and Wind-Ups, and of course for the March 2012 ban list.
Next time don't abuse an engine for something that it wasn't supposed to be used for like using plants to summon trish
plant synchro was the pure epitome of Goodcards.dek, everything worked so well in it
"Another $300 into a deck"
Where were you finding Dino Rabbit for that cheap? The set of Rabbits alone was almost $300.
VinDixen guys like myself who had those cards profit from those days. I pulled cards like them and never wanted them. so I sold them off cheap. good times
Michael Foley
Play set of Rabbit and Tour Guide > $300
Rabbits were 80 at the least. Laggia was ~30. Dolkka was 60. Tour Guide was 100. Leviair was $25.
240+60+120+300+25 = 745 != 300
i bought the laggia and dolkka tins before that format started. rai-oh was at 3 in that format too
3x Tour Guide = 100€ each
3x Rescue Rabbit = 80-90 € each
3x Maxx "c" Im not sure anymore but I belive 60 € per?
2x Dolkka 60€ per
2x Laggia 30 - 35 € per
2x Leviair 25 € per
1x Wind Up Zenmaines (Reprint came 14.08.2012 (DD/MM/YYYY) was also pretty expensive I think 40 or 50 €?
3x 100 + 3 x 85 + 3x 60 + 2x 60 + 2 30 + 2 x 25 + 40 = 1005 € with just this cards and then there were also some cards with 5 - 10 € prices like Solemn Warning or Forbidden lance.
Could also have taken a list from 2011 with steelswarm roach and Brionac aswell as Trishula to make it even more expensive (Trish and Brio got played cause of Mindcontrol).
Deck that was used as reference: yugiohtopdecks.com/deck/1925
Pls do the september 2013 banlist cap, I think that was also a very important moment in the history of this game!
The_Last_Human a very depressing moment imo
Not your biggest fan, Cap but this was really interesting having never played through this format myself. Wouldn't mind more of these Yugioh historical videos.
why you had to add
the salt before before the sugar doe
Because I felt it made my point more valid and also because it's the truth.
RLuke103 When'd you start playing then?
Maybe nice to take on the 2014 banlist in which stratos was banned for no fucking reason whatsoever.
2002, on-off for the next couple of years then came back in 2013 after rediscovering the game with a friend and finding a proper locals community.
I can't wait till the next ban list in 2020
@Milktank ™ Side Monsters. Monsters summoned from the side deck that don't use the extra monster zone.
Bro this aged badly.
@@Crazigaming Nah the banlist is fine, it's just really good new decks
@@thiccupcake mhm killing synchro decks and murdering the meta that lasted 1 format just didnt happen.
It's funny now because we are in 2020 and the last banlist banned or limited litterally nothing
As I’m getting older I like documentaries and informational things and I really love listening to you go in depth and give us the information.
Just extremely informative, insightful and not over embellished with high energy acting and opinions
Next do the September 2013 banlist.
Celza Yamuto nah that banlist was great
that banlist is cancer and the main reason why the game has been so stale for so long.
Celza Yamuto I think that was the format where I first heard the phrase "gentlemen's agreement" being used in yugioh
what happened in the september 2013 list? i cant remember
They took our nigga Stratos
I've been waiting for this vid forever!! you talk about this ban list a lot! Love it
Really liked this video from you Cap! I only started playing the game last year and it's neat to learn about past formats.
I came back into the game during this format and thought nothing of it at the time, after playing for a few years i learned how bad this list really was
Fuck November 2015's list, aka The Third Impact. The list that killed Shaddolls, killed Ritual Beasts, hamstrung Nekroz, Qli and Tellars and TICKLED Burning Abyss.
Yeah other than them making Link monsters they basically hit every meta deck, except BA because at that point BAs never topped, it was a way worse ban list in my opinion those decks were super expensive at the time and now they're unplayable
Skeleton-chan Your greatly understating what happened to BA. The hit to Graff/Cir crippled the deck as they had less starter cards. You always wanted to open at least 1 of them so had Dante with another BA on field cause the builds were still trap heavy so always fire lake threat. The deck became competitive again with Fiendish Rhino Warrior who basically replaced the cirs and graffs lost, still super trap heavy though. Beatrice gave the deck ability to otk t2. Stayed competitive so long cause it could run most major floodgates for the format (anti-spell,mask of restrict), Beatrice/farfa (said fuck you to xyz), and Fiendish Rhino Warrior not because a bad banlist.
Kozmos vs. The meta at that time was very weird. I mean the YCS finals before that banlist was a Kozmo mirror match right? Actually wasn't all top 4 kozmos players? Like it's a really complicated game of rock-paper-scissors. Ritual Beast vs. Kozmos were 50/50 as steeds didn't target so fuck ForeRunner (Dark Destroyer wasn't out yet), Pettlephin was a bitch to get over, Macro and Fissure too good, but simply Ritual Beast was too slow. If Ritual Beast went first and went off, they won; however, if all they did was summon cannahawk and try to step for next turn they where likely to lose. The Shaddoll match up is actually terrible for Kozmos. Construct was too much for them especially since no Dark Witch or Destroyer yet, then even after DD release If you got Construct plus Winda on field there was very little they could do. Combined with main deck Thunder King and Mistake which made Kozmotown less powerful. Only issue Shaddolls had was honestly just opening up playable. BA beats Kozmos (i fucking loved that matchup), they float better, better traps, and F0 is a fucking boss. Sure kozmojo and dark wotch would eventually make slightly more playable for Kozmos, but still heavily in BA favor to me. Even with all that said Nekroz was the best deck easily, And Kozmos win that matchup pretty handedly. Because Nekroz always wanted clear board turn 1, just you know deck thin. Then all Kozmos had to do summon farmgirl attack, responds with Valk, tag out into anything and BP still commences then bang you dead cause that's how Kozmos work. Then hell lets continue on with other decks that came out afterwards. Majespecters lose to Kozmos cause they're just too little, traps are usless towards their ability to tag out (and now Kozmos had DD). Next deck being Magicians and yeah, Kozmos lose handedly to magicians. Open floodgate or lose honestly.Trying to get through Avian, Kirin, etc. Too much. Then we had Pepe, and that's just a nope. Floodgate or lose again but Pepe could easily get rid of Anti- Spell with just pitching Damage Juggler to negate damage and search hat tricker next turn. Next Monarchs come out with Stormforth and Erebus just fucks them over, Domain makes them bigger than DD, Prime blocking hella attacks. Pk-fire (kind of new) still beats Kozmos for a lot of the same reasons i stated BA does; however PK-fire gives up little bit of consistency and recovery for power so it can easily make stronger boards. Demise Decks become popular and Kozmos always had a weakness to backrow. So like even with that November 15th banlist Kozmos were barely a top 5 deck with all that transpired afterwards. If those decks hadn't been hit sure barely top 10. Kozmos just was inherently weak meta deck.
Overall my point is calling this banlist a point of pushing TCG exclusives is really wrong cause Kozmos were bad and BA wasn't getting saved until Rhino in January, and Beatrice in March(?). There was just going to honestly be too many decks running around. Raidraptors top 32 a YCS, had Qliphort and Yosenjus Demise doing well on Regionals circuit, Demise Counter Fairy performing well at YCS, Kaiju Madolche (vaguely) remember top 32 a YCS, PK with no Ba won a regional right after its release (Jeff Jones as pilot), Demise spellbooks on regional circuit, and i think Demise Geargia running only one armor got like top 48 some YCS; just to name a few random tops. Like 3 variants of Monarchs going around: synchro, xyz, and domain lock. Sure we had a clear meta, but kaijus, demise and most the meta decks tendency to brick (monarchs, kozmos) greatly closed the gap between tier 1 and tier 2.
Cap c'mon this is not the worst banlist don't you remember the September 2013 banlist when the TCG split from OCG and completely limited all our staple cards.
I know right, I didn't mind using all those cheap traps like compulsory why the fuck is Stratos still banned?
Yeah this format wasn't that bad for synchros anyway fucking Brionac was still in the game
I didn't even miss Trish, Brionac was easier to summon and a lot more consistent card especially against the mirror
This is true Brionac was pretty fucking absurd and even with it's new errata it's still quite strong.
That's like saying the current list is not bad for PePe because we still have one Ignister. Or that Dragon Rulers are still relevant because we still have all the Rank 7's. Plant Synchro was the best Synchro deck at the time and the only one that was even remotely relevant. It was completely outclassed by Wind-up and Inzektor. Yet they straight up banned their tuners in addition to Trish and semi limited tengu while doing nothing to two of the most infamous decks in this games history. And that at a time where the ban list was only updated every 6 months.
this was my format. September 2011 - September 2012 was when I was the most involved in yugioh. It was so fun back then and not overly complicated LOL
YESSSSSS, the intro is back, baby!!!
Wind-up and inzektor were hell. I dropped out of tournaments all together for that format.
I miss TeleDAD
IMO the main reason for this banlist is because in japan, they didn't have Wind-up Shark (I think) and TGU, so rabbit decks weren't top tier at all, and the wind-up loop was much harder to pull off. You also have to remember that it was at a time where the OCG and TCG banlist were one and the same. TYhis probably meant that T.G. agents and Plant synchro were the best decks over there. I guess they had inzektors tho, which in this case, I don't understand why they didn't get hit. But for the other two decks that were tier 1 in the TCG, I could understand why they didn't get hit.
It makes sense, but like you say Inzektor was untouched and the previous two sets were lackluster and probably sold poorly. I'm not saying Konami perhaps didn't at least *try* to keep the game in a state that only introduced archetypes on par with previous ones based on those first two packs (Xyz at first didn't make the splash Synchros did when first released), upholding creativity and balance, but if sales didn't meet expectations it meant (on their end) that something needed to be done. It's not that I'm saying they shouldn't look to profit, because that's their mission statement, and certainly not saying it's easy to keep balance and still make money, but when it's *this* obvious it becomes an issue.
Now they did separate the lists, which is to their credit and I'm sure the backlash here had something to do with that. Konami isn't *completely* an assholish, money hungry evil entity to the point some believe but when it *does* get greedy, it is very obvious and the ban list has mostly become their method of moving the game away from non-profitable sets onto new ones. Otherwise, the immediate rising of a few decks to superiority wouldn't continue to happen. I'm sure they know by now what is overpowered and what isn't, how to properly test archetypes and staples, but they continue to release them anyway which naturally makes them look bad.
Oh and Links killed many decks which I'm sure they were aware of from the beginning. It's hard not to see this mechanic as partially a way to push the rogue gallery permanently away from their rogue decks because a lot don't even function anymore. Variety is kind of at a long-time low overall even though decks that top at tournaments are pretty varied. So it both hurt and helped, if that makes sense. It hurt rogue and casual players but helped the most competitive ones have some variety at their disposal.
I actually got back into yugioh around 2010 with a few of my friends and family. I remember we stopped playing around 2012 too cuz we got tired of the ban lists. They really were just making OP decks and banning/restricting them after they had their run... then releasing a new set of powerful decks
Oh yeah! I remember this list. This was the list that made me drop Yugioh for Vanguard. Feel a lotta people did that to.
Honestly, I want to see more content like this from you!
Dang so that's what happened to plant synchro lol, nice video Cap. As always
We haven't had a ban list for so long, that we're talking about PAST ban list's
good video cap, generally would be interested in more videos of this tier, quality and information wise. Great use of the english language aswell, not many repetitve words and well spoken
Best video you ever made in my opinion -reason i subbed
You know I usually subscribe to a lot of channels up here but after yesterday I came down to keeping a few channels like you , mkol40 . You two are kinda all I need to stay inform when it comes to this game and oh I forgot cimooo . Love you three guys when it comes to the meta
I was 12 years old back then, first time I tried to play meta and really saved up my money for all the meta cards, just to have this happen to me. I quit yugioh after that, it hit me so hard
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Plant Synchro also got destroyed on YGO Online 3, I was using it until they nerfed it big time.
perhaps you could do an entire segmented yugioh history series by each format/banlist. it seems a majority of viewers watching this vid were very pleased with this vid in particular and would want to hear more on the subject of yugiohs past
icemanchong _ I would rather he do a history of people's feelings and reactions to the banlists and decisions of the past. Yuginono is already working on a series explaining how to play old formats, especially with giving their banlists and examples of the decks played at the time.
Sorry but Konami is greedy, evil, and treated Kojima bad.
This comment was directed by Hideo Kojima.
Kojima is the most pretentious developer in existence and
Konami and all their simps are just atrocious
Appreciate the effort CAP!
Haha, this is amazing.
I quit the game after my TG Plant Synchro deck got banned out in this format.
That one stung.
I got lucky because I sold all my plant synchro stuff for wind ups
And this is when the game went completely downhill IMO, and every continuous t0 format that came after it throughout ZEXAL's era was just a formality and to be expected even, after this. The disgusting effect that ZEXAL era shit has on the game can still be felt today, and that's why I cannot wait for the huge paradigm shift that VRAINS is gonna bring.
Counter Trap Gaming Is it even gonna change it though? It just seems like a failed attempt at this point
You do realise that the best deck at bringing out Links is likely to Dominate, right?
Counter Trap Gaming you do also realize there was no tier0 deck in zexal era period most people saw tier 1
Eric Biggdogg what was e dragons then?
Isaiah Reed im talking about current and e dragons were not as bad as this plus so hard and consistancy of popping everything bull with zoo
Here I thought the most infamous banlist was the one where Stratos got banned or when they decided to separate TCG from OCG!
damn i havent seen that intro in forever
WTF? Is this actually a well done video? I'm proud of you Cap.
2012 banlist talk in 2017
I remember this format, completely unfair advantage for those decks and inzektors where a pain.
Yeah but those decks were newer so it made sense not to ban something they just made, I wish they'd use this reasoning during 2015 ban list when they hit everything they just put out like, Shaddolls, Qlis, Nekroz, and even BA not as bad as the other decks but still they hit BA, for almost topping
Do more videos like this, they're really solid
I played through this format. Back then, I was a pretty new player in terms of competitive play, but I did well learning the game using Six Samurai. About a month before the ban list, I wanted to change my play style; rather than controlling the field with Shi En and Beast, I wanted to learn plant Synchro. I never had the money to buy the full deck, but I had Quasar and my friend and at the time mentor had the main cards for the deck so he let me use it to learn, as he was now running Dino Rabbits. I used the deck for that February before the deck got destroyed. Now I had a deck that won me a few games and one that was unplayable, while my friend couldn't make any money on the deck he put together.
June 2020: The month Konami felt a sequel was due ....
tbh this is one of the best cap videos I have ever seen maybe u could do more of these yugioh history lessons maybe try the emergency banlists?
I hated how Anti-Synchro the early XYZ-era was!
i just pray to good the link area is not nothing but link like xyz era or this will be some bullshit
You're wrong and misinformed they still loved synchro at this point Brionac was still in the game
Jason Miller this way i like pen era u want to use fusion fusiondeck want xzy xyz deck etc but i feel link era will nothing but link decks...
Jason Miller um.. correct me if I'm wrong but brionac was banned at least a year before this, way more overpowered than Trish at the time
OK nvmnd just check he was banned 6 months later
oh inzectors were horrible back then. that was a hard year for both Syncrons and blue-eyes control.
“Bro, you’re losing to inzektors because you keep feeding them.”
Me: sooo like what? The solution is to not play cards? Not play the game?? Duuuh ok. (Proceeds to get attacked directly until game)
These days are even harder to Synchron.
After the worst banlist, September 2012 was one of the best banlist of all time.
we need more history videos !
Good video, a refreshing change of pace for your channel as of late. But you're forgetting one major fact: There wasnt an OCG/TCG split yet. TG Agents wasnt a big deck here because we had Plant Synchro and Dino Rabbit holding the line, making that deck tier 2 at best in the TCG, while it was PePe level dominant in the OCG. So the OCG hit that deck, marking one of the first times our metas were so strikingly different, considering Wind-Up wasnt a bad threat for them and Dino Rabbit didnt exist for them. (Verz Rabbit did tho, which was worlds weaker)
That made me take a 5 year Hiatus from yugioh as the zexal meta decks made it way too completive for the older decks to keep up despite getting some new supports.
I was watching this video wondering where it was going or what the big deal was... then you mentioned Agent of Mystery - Earth and I remembered. I remembered how much a I absolutely loathed this banlist.
I quit playing the game because of this ban list. I haven't played since 2012
I'm pretty sure TG stun won Nationals that year.
I eagerly await the Shock-Lock Wind-Up Sequel to this
Ah, the March 2012 banlist... AKA the banlist I came back to after leaving around the time Lightsworns were introduced. I played World Lock and X-Sabers during that format and actually got to around 1500 rating in Dueling Network. This video just gives me so much nostalgia... even though I missed the entire Synchro era.
Even more surprising is that Tech Genus Stun ended up winning at the YCS Atlanta event you talked out Cap.
This is the time when I retired. Ah the memory
Great video!
This was my first banlist, I was only just getting into competitive play with TG Agents and then got forced into going back to Gag Decks.
I remember this format. I had just gotten back into the game about 2 or 3 months prior and had no idea what any of these cards did at the time, but one of my buddies was PISSED!
Now I'm afraid the next banlist will be a repeat of this.
Lmao same
At least we didn't get a pachinko...
The articles in question that MegaKappaG was referring to!:
yugiohblog.konami.com/articles/?p=3866
yugiohblog.konami.com/articles/?p=3876
yugiohblog.konami.com/articles/?p=3879
Written by good ole Kevin Tewart himself. I remember reading these articles long ago and it's crazy to see what has CHANGED since then. Maybe you people will find these articles... "fascinating" in their own way. LMAO.
SIDE NOTE: I love how he skipped over Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier in article one. lol.
Coincidently this was around the time Cardfight vanguard came out and actually helped that game take off, with people taking a break from yugioh or even quitting it completely.
I think Master Rule 4 was a more corrupt move.
Damn this takes me back
And then 18 months later, our favorite card Stratos was banned for 0 reason at a time Dragon Rulers were running rampant.
Cap, could you give 2 cents on the Sept 2013 banlist too?
This was a great video. Definitely do more yugioh history videos.
more historical vids please, especially early formats (like anything pre-dragon rulers)
it was such a fun format though haha
This gets recommended shortly after the 2021 October list. Lol
agents were meta in the ocg, I believe this was the last list that we had the same banlist.
Man I remember that format. It was the first time I had a competitive deck at full power from the start cause I had trish and BLS. I wish agents were good again
I literally left Yu-Gi-Oh right before inzektors hit, my local game shop moved 30 miles away. I played a dragunity deck and a plant/synchro deck themed around roses. I miss this
Wow, that was actually a good video.
That was a great time. That was back when nobody knew how massive of a card Tour Guide was gonna be, me and my friends were buying them at $20 apiece... major profit
when talking about combos, Cap, you should show an example of what youre talking about, just have the combo running quickly in YGOpro in the background of you talking.
Oh, this banlist. Let me be clear; I had STOPPED playing by this point. If anyone is curious, they can ask me. But I remember a friend who played back then told me/showed me this list. And he was pissed. But overall, excellent video, Cap. This is one of your better videos you've done in a while. And I do hope you can do more where you go into past formats and explain the banlists. Stuff like this should be important for newer players to understand. That said, do you think BA is essentially the next gen plant Synchron with how it has been powercreeped out of the game due to ABCs, metalfoes and now Zoodiacs? Because, if so; I find it amazing how history repeats itself. Minus, having an actual banlist.
hey kap can you make a video talking about the lawsuit between konami and wizards of the coast about magic cards? assuming you were around for that
that was because of them calling spell cards magic cards right? i remember that. old school yugioh #nostalgia
This was actually my favorite format. Sorry Capital G.
I started playing right before this banlist. I played Plant Synchro for about 3 weeks on DN and loved it before it got smashed. It wasn't even that good but it sure was fun.
as someone playing the format before, its a real eye opener of what konami can and will for profit. Like looking back plants were power creep and cant keep up to the zexal decks. Though the biggest slap to the fan was the fact they hit all the tuners and synchros. 2012 wasnt bad like looking back on it most players would play a format like that in a heartbeat. but some players at the time just gave up and took time to get back to the game.
Honestly what happened should have been a lesson to them. Keeping players from quitting will yield a lot more profits long term than aggressively pushing new cards.
That ban list was my last time i played competitive. You literally nailed exactly what happened to my community during that era. Nothing powerful got hit after ORC and half the players quit. I just lost interest in the game due to xyzs. Still not a fan of them. Havent come back since but still follow it.
March 2012... Arguably the most spontaneous bout of insanity, a stark polar opposite to the other most spontaneous ruling which happened back in 2005 in time for the Ardmore Oklahoma Regionals a short time after the CREV Sneak Peek, the 30-day waiting period to use newly-released cards.
That decision had been made due to the obvious OP nature of CREV's biggest staple cards. I was at the Ardmore Regionals, I listened to one of the staffers telling all players about the new ruling before the event went live, and I immediately understood why. At that time, Skill Drain was one of the top meta decks, and even more insane Limiter Removal was Semi-Limited. Imagine the chaos that would've ensued if you had access to Power Bond, Cyber Twin/End, and TWO Limiters... Fuck Skill Drain, for sure. The following September, the next ban list was dropped, and Limiter was punted back to one.
That move was smart, March 2012 was just retarded...
me before the video: "on this couldn't be that bad"
me after: "oh god it really was."
I actually just got into Yugioh on the day of this banlist, heard some kids from my class in school talking about it and that’s what got me into Yugioh in the first place
And people still think Konami cares about making the game competitive and fun ha ha ha ha ha
This. Competitive it might be in some capacity of the word, but fun? I'd rather go back to being a stupid-ass ADHD kid and try to beat the puzzle challenges in 7 Trials To Glory, lol.
I like these kind of videos
It was because of those two archetypes that I ended up leaving the game for a number of years, and only recently started to play again.
Lot of nostalgia for me.
now we wait for the [month, day] 2017(?) banlist
2012 was a fun year for me. using Six Samurai against Dino Rabbit and Wind-ups was fun
especially when I had Natura Beast, Barkion, Shi En and Great Shogun Shien on board
lots of nopes to spells and traps
if I managed Landoise as well, nope to monster effects too lmao
Heavy storm legal + Inzektor Hornet + Dragonfly. No board was safe :(
I really liked this! I hated this banlist because my friend had a chaos plant deck and I had a t.g. agent deck :/ The only banlist I thought was almost as bad was when Stratos was banned for this exact same reason I believe that was September 2013? RIP Stratos
nice video jordan
I love how the title has "Budget" in it and there's a solemn in the thumbnail
u wut m8 ?
yeah. wrong vid. lmfao
+ansishihi Cimoooooooo's?
That's a balance of judgment. It's a common.
Kyuubi bomb yep. cimooos vid xd
yo gilly. can I have that avatar tho?
I remember reading this list, those were some bad 6 months. However the next format was pretty sweet iirc.
This was just before I quit the game. It was when Gear Gigant X was put up to Secret Rare from Super Rare in the OCG and I was done.
