It goes earlier than this...hybrid flip + beatdown was a pretty standard deck in 2002-2004. People ran so many Magician of Faith and other tiny set monsters, that I won multiple tournaments in 2003 dealing the finishing blow with...Mad Sword Beast...yes really.

Gersub Denis That’s a hand trap. A normal trap is set face down like a spell, then you can flip it up and activate it when your opponent does a specific action (Mirror Force is a classic; when your opponent attacks with a monster, all their Attack Position monsters go poof). Yugioh has recently seen a rise in effects informally called “hand traps”, which activate in response to an opponent’s action like traps, but do so in your hand.

    Few things though:
    1. Return wasn't the only reason people went all in during that format.Comeback mechanichs available were few and far between so if you lost the board, you weren't getting it back.
    2. Adrian Madaj was the one who launched the recruiter build into relevance placing second at euros.
    3. Towards the end of the format,Stein replaced Return in most builds due to the fact it was searchable through sangan/last will and it didn't require set-up like Return
    4. Reaper was actually more important than any other flip effect monster during that era because often times it would be a straight up +1

This was the peak of when I played for the most part. At least up until the set with Hydrogeddon came out. My favorite Flip Effect monster in Yugioh to this day is Des Koala because so many people hated on me for playing it in decks that were not burn. I loved that card and would use it in all my decks. Most of which were made of what I had because I was poor. Koala would usually net me 1200 to 1600 damage and was my favorite first turn play with a Sakuretsu Armor for back up. Then you turn around and either Tsukuyomi it back down or you sacrificed it for a Monarch in my case (I couldn't afford Thestalos or Zaborgs so I played Mobius and Granmargs main deck lol). I always played Magic Cylinder too and loved to get people with that. I think I saw someone once on the internet call something similar to this gameplan Black Burn and I kind of went with it. I saw it as more of an aggressive burn deck than the normal stallish burn decks that people were running at the time.

What about other flips that were prominent in the game at other times?? Like geargias or ryko who was used widely for many years. Usually in tandem with super nimble mega hamster during the synchro format days.
And lets not forget Shaddolls. Who reigned during the arc v era. Contending with all kinds of decks and who's cards are still being revered as decent, many even wanting their super ace, Construct, to come back to the game.
I enjoyed the history lesson. Reminding me of the days i would follow along to the competitive happenings in the beckett yugioh collector magazines and proxying their decks, before i even knew what proxying meant.
I hope you continue the story, as there is much more that could be said...

The era the cards are from don't matter. A Chaos deck is a deck centered around any of the chaos monsters, with a basis in Light and Dark attributes. Since return and dimension fusion are banned, I ran Necroface in my build, alongside Desires for an easy 2200 monster, with potential for more.

I would have liked you to also adress that fact that Shaddolls weren't meta because of their flipp effects, but because of the overall good card quality and their floating effects.

Hey meta sheep. Yes Im talking about you people who bass old cards and only play the 2-3 decks that go on tournaments each year. Listen capital g's story and tell me. Why do you like the mess yugioh turned into more than that beautiful game?
