lutin grognon I can't back during duel monsters when we only had Fusion to get major monsters out other than tributing and using ritual that's all you had really to play and if someone played something like mirror force it disrupted your whole entire deck so the creators final solution that would come up with the most crazy o p monsters in the future make monsters with effects in some of these monsters with come with crazy effects like make them immune to trap cards or shut down trap cards or they can't be targeted or they can't be destroyed or whatever most monsters at that time did not have a fixed and if you don't believe me all you got to do is play some of the Nintendo DS games and play stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh worldwide edition and you'll see what I'm talking about
I can't say this enough, but I absolutly loves this series of yours, keep it up pal. Also, you should make a video about the first ever World Championship, back in 2003.
lorddrake4444 nah man at least you can still play with the cards of 10 years ago. They suck? Yeah but with Pokémon and magic you can't play, you need to buy a whole new deck in order to be able to play. That's worse than making a ban list to balance the game
That's a load of crap. Magic has multiple formats that you can play, and they regularly rotate old cards in and out of the game. Konami barely even keeps their list regular anymore, and it's the size of a damned phone book.
But why have multiple formats where u have to see what cards u can use and can´t? It´s more complicated than just buying a cool booster pack with cards you can use and collect. I prefer yugioh because it´s accessibility and easy way to play.
Diego Salazar I'd argue that Magic is MORE accessible. Not in terms of learning the game, per se, but in terms of just how much mileage you can get from your cards.
Honestly I dont play magic or pokemon, firstly because i mostly play Dueling book or YGOPRO, cause they are free, and i think there arent free online versions of pokemon or Magic. But still, magic cards are waaaay more expensive, and I dont understand the 10+ formats it has. Yugioh only has 1v1, 2v2, OCG and TCG which are pretty much the same with some minor differences.
This was a well thought out and thorough video CapG. Keep up the amazing work. You can see how you invested time doing all your research. Video content was spot on and you took me back in time. I remember being 14 when this happened and I was like what do you mean I am cheating and I cannot play this card. Amazing work! Cheers from Los Ángeles, CA!
Played way back at the beginning, never competitively, and fell away from it during high school. Couple years ago, rewatched the show, and had to rebuild my collection, taught the wife, and we play together pretty regularly. Point is, thanks for all your content G, it's great to get caught up on the yugioh universe. Love the format, the attention to details, and the fact that it's clear from how you talk, you love the game as much as we all do. Thanks, and keep it up!
I really enjoy these videos, I wasn't playing the game during this time and it's nice to have someone informative like you to tell us and explain the history of the game. Thank you for the enjoyable videos!
You should do a video on the impact of makyura the destructor. I wasn't playing Yugioh back then so I'm curious to know how it was like to duel with it
Back during the DM era they actually tried to do draft events. It wasn't very successful because the games were basically a race to see who summoned their big monster first.
I was 12 when the card game first came out in America. I remember it fondly. I'm 32 now, will be 33 later this year. I still play it with Family from time to time.
I remember for the longest time after the ban list first came out the local tourney didn’t even use that list, we still just played traditional format.
Oh god, i remember this too. I was running a Chaos Yata deck. ooh ya... sangan on the field. Chaos drawed and my face looking like a fat kid at a cake factory. Summon chaos, (Special summon), nuke the field, and hands. Sangan effect, lets me draw yata. I summon yata. Soft slap them with yata, deal 300, making them skip their next draw phase. :D Win.
Imagine if Konami decided to make a forbidden and limited list for Yugitubers. Limiting the amount of ads they could have on their videos with forbidden Yugitubers having all of their Yu-Gi-Oh content COMPLETELY demonetized. here's my idea for a layout of the first theoretical Yugituber forbidden & limited list (Note that I'm keeping my own thoughts on said Yugitubers out. This is simply a joke) Forbidden: Davinator1212, MegaCapitalG, King of the feral imps, TeamSamuraiX1 Limited 1. Cyberknight, Nhymnim, Limited 2. Dzeff, Cimoooooooo, Anime Impact. Unlimited. Rank10YGO (Rata)
they had the choice of banning the strongest cards of the time or never do a tournament ever again. not doing a banlist could have even caused the game to die completely. at that time you either played a yata-chaos-control build or nothing at all.
That fact that trap hole was actually on a forbidden & limited list is hilarious. It was a really annoying card back in 2002-2003 but I don't remember it being worthy of being hit
It makes sense when you realize that at the time the list was made, Yugioh's entire rule system was different. It was made around the time when they were implementing the "expert rules" (read: the basis for the current rule set) and was for both that and the "official rules" (if you've ever played Duel Monsters 1, god help you, but basically that with Traps and fusions working properly). Pitfall/Trap Hole was limited because they wanted to limit the outs to Blue Eyes, best card in the format.
^.^ ah the good old days, I remember it well, when decks were built for the chance of ending the game in 1-2 turns, so different from playing decks set up to win in 1-2 turns.
at least in the past you had to think on how to build a deck that can otk/ftk your opponent. now you just buy the latest archetype which most of them come with their own otk/ftk already build in.
[apologies for the length of response but it's a large subject] not the case in the case of ftks, only 1 new deck released in the past 2 years has had a built in ftk & it wasn't even very good, it was only a rogue deck until it got adapted into an entirely different kind of deck by the playerbase, all the other ftks are by & large player constructions that range from very simple target hands to 2 card plays which lead into incredibly complex 30+ step combo utilizing multiple archetypes or just many, some very old, cards of no archetype, the last year especially has seen a massive resurgence in highly competitive decks which aren't made of a pre packaged archetype but out of what players can do utilizing the entire yugioh card pool, & the OTKs that exist in almost every deck are more often than not found by the playerbase in the process of optimization, the biggest difference archetypes bring is the sharing of information in a concentrated area eg. the archetype duelist groups on facebook, when the game started it was often one person looking at the card pool & doing the best they could, the ftks that did exist often weren't well known, while now there's a large community that revolves entirely around exploring ftks, so that when one does find a consistent avenue in a top tier deck it's already been heavily explored & optimized & only needs to be picked up & played, & likewise it's only a matter of time till max damage combos for most archetypes get shared amoungst that archetypes playerbase, so that even what are perceived as & what are actually designed as very low damage control decks like trickstar, altergeist & sky strikers all have an otk -it's the community not the company that makes otks & ftks so common in Yugioh atm. If anything outside of generic link releases the company has been pushing the low damage control archetypes when they do release a top tier archetype as a complete deck, and have been releasing a ton of mediocre decks with large drawbacks that inherently slow them down like Metaphys & Elementsabres.
I know it'd be silly because prices change all the time, but could you do a video about what the most expensive deck (that being, 40 cards that are just the most expensive, not that they necessarily play well together) would cost? Could be a fun video.
I never understand why Konami didn’t do like wizards of the coast and have separate formats based on release. Standard- last 4 sets released(sometimes 5) Modern- back further maybe last 6 years of cards released are legal with a very small ban list. Legacy- every card made is legal with the exception of a couple of cards banned which are rotated out. Reprints would be made of older cards making the older ones legal in standard but also boost sales even more as to keep decks competitive in each format
Can you do the story of other infamous ban lists like the November 2015 list? Got in the game a while back but enjoy learning about the history of the game that i missed
It also ruined a lot of decks and left people scrambling for replacement cards and others straight quitting because they just paid a ton of money to build the perfect light dark deck
Jason Tran, you can also use Thunder Dragon for that, provided you used it's own effect to get 2 copies, that makes 2 free discard costs and deck thinning as a bonus.
About a month after this list hit, I went to a shop for locals that was running Traditional Format cause the players there could not bear to lose their staple cards. I was THE ONLY person there not using any Banned Cards. Took 2nd place!
That's why when I went to tournaments I only played people in casual duels and not for rank so that I can use those iconic cards I will have them Limited in my deck to one card in my deck but still monster reborn is a classic and I like classic
I'm pretty sure imperial order got an errata which changed its effect to a mandatory payment of life points which greatly reduced its power, you could no longer use it to stop your opponent and then get rid of it during your turn
I got a similar yata lock with Excess Saber Arabella because with that card if it does battle damage and the opponent has 5 cards in her hand you can take one of them and place it on top of the deck and if they have no usable cards it's an instant wit I actually got that off one time
Tbh If you make it a “discard a card, *Enter Yata’s effect*,Remove from play after the battle phase, face down” i highly doubt maybe anyone would use it, i dunno tbh. 😆
Isnt the new diablous used as a yata !?? When i have only 1 card my opponent will keep forcing me to put the same card because i am afraid i draw a worse card. The other day i kept drawing candina and putting it on top
Mister Biscuit people complain about the game being too speedy but want non-errata version of degenerat card without drawback because of nostaligia. No logic behind that. Gouki are litteraly made of sangan-like monsters with errata and they are what "nostalgic" player called broken. The game always had the same problem and the only way found to resolve that was banlist or errata
In all Honestly when xyz monsters showed up, I quit playing the game until recently I got into 2005 Goat Format because Its the style of yugioh I enjoyed and games were longer then 1-2 turn games.
It is and always has been legal to force a draw, although Konami generally doesn't like it, which is why they errata'd cards like Ring of Destruction such that it can never cause a draw, as you first take the damage, then your opponent does. But there are still some cards, even in the current TCG format, that you can use to force a draw, such as Fairy Wind, as it inflicts damage simultaneously to both players.
\o/ Hexenwahn \o/ I know for a fact it was at 1. Pot of greed is the definition of a staple card. Some decks can't play graceful charity because they can't afford the discard cost. Pot of greed has literally no drawback, it's just a straight plus one.
How can you not afford the discard? It's still a plus one with the bonus that it lets you filter your hand! In the case of a Chaos deck, it could mean discarding a light and dark for a turn 1 BLS or Chaos Sorcerer.
I think if the card is banned or limited in real life then the card should never pop up on the show. Honestly none of those cards should be banned as there were many ways to deal with the cards at the time and even more gained as time went on. People that were complaining just didn't want to try in a tactical game at all.
Back when mirror force was so powerful it was on the ban list
Me2 lol
it's been still a powerful board wipe right up until the release of nightmares, they protect from destruction
lutin grognon
I can't back during duel monsters when we only had Fusion to get major monsters out other than tributing and using ritual that's all you had really to play and if someone played something like mirror force it disrupted your whole entire deck so the creators final solution that would come up with the most crazy o p monsters in the future make monsters with effects in some of these monsters with come with crazy effects like make them immune to trap cards or shut down trap cards or they can't be targeted or they can't be destroyed or whatever most monsters at that time did not have a fixed and if you don't believe me all you got to do is play some of the Nintendo DS games and play stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh worldwide edition and you'll see what I'm talking about
Mirror force jumped between every spot for ages until zexal (iirc)
Was a bit of an overreaction tbh
I can't say this enough, but I absolutly loves this series of yours, keep it up pal.
Also, you should make a video about the first ever World Championship, back in 2003.
and then the banlist became just another way to sell cards FeelsBadMan
lorddrake4444 nah man at least you can still play with the cards of 10 years ago. They suck? Yeah but with Pokémon and magic you can't play, you need to buy a whole new deck in order to be able to play. That's worse than making a ban list to balance the game

Lest we forget Sangan & Witch of the Black Forest gave us ability to seek out pieces of the forbidden one.
I really enjoy these videos, I wasn't playing the game during this time and it's nice to have someone informative like you to tell us and explain the history of the game. Thank you for the enjoyable videos!
I miss 2004-2005 yugioh. Oh to be young again lol.
Trap Hole at 1 in 1999??? How did people play Traptrix back then :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( Kappa
Odd-Eyes Von "Kappa"
Odd-Eyes Von Kappa.....
beatleplayer1011 hows life working out for you? it's been a while.
Odd-Eyes Von that's the joke....
You should do a video on the impact of makyura the destructor. I wasn't playing Yugioh back then so I'm curious to know how it was like to duel with it
Basically free reckless greeds and jar of greeds to get exodia and go for game.
Melvin Cruz I thought you were Celza at first glance
DADDY GAMECIEL oof
Celza Yamuto The pfps are very similar when you look at them for a second, right?
DrunkenPumpkins then he might as well make a video on how exodia was once meta.
The good old days. Those times were fun.
Konami should hold tournaments where duelists can only build decks that from a single booster pack variant.
Imagine a tournament of only LOB cards
Back during the DM era they actually tried to do draft events. It wasn't very successful because the games were basically a race to see who summoned their big monster first.
I'l always prefer a banlist over Magic restriction policies
Then just play modern or legacy. lol You're not forced to play standard.
Team EDH for the win.
The what?
I love that he used the card images from the actual sets he was talking about in the video. Another great overview of old school Yu-Gi-Oh
Cap it is only a matter of time before you do the history of the yata-lock
I was 12 when the card game first came out in America. I remember it fondly. I'm 32 now, will be 33 later this year. I still play it with Family from time to time.
A goat format and why it was great video would be awesome
That moment when you read 1 word wrong and think the banlist dropped
I remember for the longest time after the ban list first came out the local tourney didn’t even use that list, we still just played traditional format.
Makes me feel very old remembering playing all those years ago.
Really want the "subscribing makes life happyyy" back
Luis Caro "Shout out to my homeboy Dante, ayyyee." 😂😂
Having about a quarter of my deck wiped out in that ban list hurt, a lot. Had to build a completely new deck to compensate.
:D Win.
and the only time you lose was by going second in a mirror match.
Songi I remember that well. I never got Yata-Locked but did it to everyone. Made every duelist in my school hate me. It was a great feeling
I think these are my favourite videos next to the commentary videos. please teach history at my college?
Imagine if Konami decided to make a forbidden and limited list for Yugitubers. Unlimited. Rank10YGO (Rata)
tim5fl ok
another Unlimited:Dpygo
because the guy need to pay rent
I remember this came out really close to SJC Columbus Ohio, and I had to completely redo my deck.
The first banlist was so strange, the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh were such a lawless wasteland and then Konami said "I AM THE LAW"
they had the choice of banning the strongest cards of the time or never do a tournament ever again.
not doing a banlist could have even caused the game to die completely.
at that time you either played a yata-chaos-control build or nothing at all.
LunarWingCloud
You could play them for fun with a friend who don't care but not tournament wise
That fact that trap hole was actually on a forbidden & limited list is hilarious. It was a really annoying card back in 2002-2003 but I don't remember it being worthy of being hit

Invasion of Chaos was the first box I ever bought and on the 6th pack I got my fav card Dark Magician of Chaos
Imagine that somebody from 2018 dueled vs 1999.
I remember the old days very simple
Konami then: "We must take immidiate action to save the game, CED and Yata Garasu gotta go!"
Konami now: "VFD and Halq go brrrr"
So thats when the infamous raigeki + silver fang combo originated.
Such rich history gave birth to a very formidable combo Kappa
Oh and btw, Yusei never used Monster Reborn. #FACTS
They knew it invasion of chaos was the gates of hell opening
I know it'd be silly because prices change all the time, but could you do a video about what the most expensive deck (that being, 40 cards that are just the most expensive, not that they necessarily play well together) would cost? Could be a fun video.
Yet Pot Of Greed was absolutely ok at 3 xD
I miss those days!
I never understand why Konami didn’t do like wizards of the coast and have separate formats based on release.
Standard- last 4 sets released(sometimes 5)
Modern- back further maybe last 6 years of cards released are legal with a very small ban list.

I'm so glad you got rid of your old intro/ending... Great vid as all of the others, I can't get tired of them. Keep it up, Cap!
10 minutes in and I have had 3 double feature ads. Thanks Cap.
Just use an ad blocker.
Yata Lock... I remember that combination, I was a victim of it. I still hate that card to this very day.
Can you do the story of other infamous ban lists like the November 2015 list? Got in the game a while back but enjoy learning about the history of the game that i missed
+Salamander He actually did do a video on the March 2012 banlist last year. Here's a link to that video czcams.com/video/axxC0VcSKr4/video.html
@Salamander
That's a good video to watch. Highly recommend it.
Thanks for this, its great learning about the history of the game
Bring back great memories
Omg I remember the old website!! This takes me back!
Was going through my old cards and found my Holo Deliquent Duo card.
Ahh - gotta love those old vanilla holos
Eh I still prefer those times over the current meta
Back when the game was fun. Now it's just a shell of what once used to be a fun and interactive game.
I think we need all of the banlists should be like that. Also, make Tier 2-3 decks better, so it'll appeal to a larger audience.
OG..... OCapG. Love it.
I LOVE these videos on the old game, great stuff :)
I loved plays like going painful choice into CED with sangan into a yata lock. I hated everyone at the card shop so it was fun winning with that.
Love capital G bed story time 😊
It also ruined a lot of decks and left people scrambling for replacement cards and others straight quitting because they just paid a ton of money to build the perfect light dark deck
A history video; excellent.
I thought you were going to being up the list that banned shock master and stratos
Mirror force, bottomless trap hole, and torrential forced me to create my wildheart deck. Those cards were fucking annoying
I never got why sinister serpent was banned. Yeah you had a card that returns to your hand but what's so great about it?
Infinite loops and unfair advantage gains
Yugioh was much more about advantage and ressource management so a free card was very good
Metamorphosis target
G Bon many cards use discard one card as a cost so serpent was a free discard as you get it back at the end.
Jason Tran, you can also use Thunder Dragon for that, provided you used it's own effect to get 2 copies, that makes 2 free discard costs and deck thinning as a bonus.
Back when yugioh was godly
About a month after this list hit, I went to a shop for locals that was running Traditional Format cause the players there could not bear to lose their staple cards. I was THE ONLY person there not using any Banned Cards. Took 2nd place!
So this is the TCG first ban list. Not first in history. That’s the OCG.
That's why when I went to tournaments I only played people in casual duels and not for rank so that I can use those iconic cards I will have them Limited in my deck to one card in my deck but still monster reborn is a classic and I like classic
I'm pretty sure imperial order got an errata which changed its effect to a mandatory payment of life points which greatly reduced its power, you could no longer use it to stop your opponent and then get rid of it during your turn
and still it got banned again.
@@gamepad3173 Didn't exoect a reply on a 3 year old comment and yes. It did get banned again.
2:27 drawoo monster cardo!
Love the history lessons although I know what happend:)
United We Stand was once forbidden, very easy to forget about that. Kappa
Isnt the new diablous used as a yata !?? When i have only 1 card my opponent will keep forcing me to put the same card because i am afraid i draw a worse card. The other day i kept drawing candina and putting it on top
but you still draw
Das Sir also you can put it on the bottom and draw a new card
Ginger MLG and risk drawing a brick? No thanks. I won btw it was a grindy game for my trickstars and it turned out to be not that bad.
I miss Witch of the Black Forest, Sangan and Graceful Charity :( Used to run a mean Exodia deck back in the day
Mister Biscuit witch of the black forest and sangan are no longer ban for some times
I'm not talking the errata'd versions :( I mean how they were Originally designed and printed
Waitch was my go to card.
ebtertaining.ialways wonderd how it began, - Dagfer!
johneawesome
Hmm 🤔 a hand of two or three good cards that if used probably win you the duel... sounds like gouki knightmare
those were the times
So they’ll ban mirror force but they won’t ban firewall. Geez
Weird question, but is it legal to force a draw in goat format?
It is and always has been legal to force a draw, although Konami generally doesn't like it, which is why they errata'd cards like Ring of Destruction such that it can never cause a draw, as you first take the damage, then your opponent does. But there are still some cards, even in the current TCG format, that you can use to force a draw, such as Fairy Wind, as it inflicts damage simultaneously to both players.
Chaos Emperor is still banned?
1:51 when you live in the only continent that no-one cares about :(
ripp all the aussie yugioh players...
i wonder of chaos emperor dragon will ever come off the banlist?
same as yata.
BANNED FOREVER.
some cards should have never been made and those two are part of that group.
I noticed a certain kind of person says ONvoy when it's INvoy. And yes those are two different things
INvoy? Pretty sure it's ENvoy
Grand Caster, Merlin I mean in terms of how it's pronounced
Shayne Rawls that's what I'm talking about
Grand Caster, Merlin En has the same pronunciation as In.
Shayne Rawls not from where I'm from
At 2004 we can't visit the website, because we don't had internet xD
Why wasn't pot of greed on this list?
Might have been at 1.
In the case of a Chaos deck, it could mean discarding a light and dark for a turn 1 BLS or Chaos Sorcerer.
top5s
Where is the ban list??
I think if the card is banned or limited in real life then the card should never pop up on the show. Honestly none of those cards should be banned as there were many ways to deal with the cards at the time and even more gained as time went on. People that were complaining just didn't want to try in a tactical game at all.
jj
Omg wtf
I seen *Black Panther* I give it 3 ★ out of 5
