  • J.K Rowling has been under fire recently for a variety of comments, widely regarded as transphobic. As a trans woman who loves Harry Potter, I thought I'd give my thoughts.

    As for the whole unintentional subtext thing, you reminded me of the movie Mulan and the trans-positive messages in it, even though as I grew up and learned that it's problematic in its Disney ways. But I also found out about how many trans people growing up were deeply touched by the song Reflection from the movie when they watched it as kids.
    "Who is this girl I see staring straight back at me? When will my reflection who I am inside?" Couldn't have been more relevant and brings me to happy tears even to this day.

    Great to hear your views on the issue. I am also a long-time fan of Harry Potter and was outraged when I heard about the allegations against J.K. Rowling (who seems like she's being a walking contradiction). On the other hand, I've been hearing stories about trans kids getting into trouble for speaking up against J.K. Rowling in front of their class and I stand with them

    For me this is the biggest letdown of the century. I also will not be spending any money on anything HP related, but getting them from my library. Also, writing fanfics where the characters are trans partially out of spite. Like, you CANNOT tell me the Severus Snape wasn't trans.

      I LOVE that you're writing trans characters. What the fans have done with the series is honestly my favorite part of it all. I've seen so many trans headcanons over the years, and I think we need those more than ever now :)

    Wow, the bit at around the 6:30 mark hit so hard to me. I'm autistic and transmasc so while, as you rightly said, I'm not part of the main group being targeted (trans women) her comment insinuating a lot of trans men are confused autistic girls really stung. Harry Potter was my rock throughout my early teens (it was essentially what I had instead of friends....which is pretty sad, I know) so to have to lose it in addition to that just felt really unfair. I've felt horrible about still liking hp, that if I really cared about my fellow trans people I should just be able to give it up without hesitation, but you've helped me realise why I feel the way I do and I can't thank you enough for that

    • @boonewilliams5338
      @boonewilliams5338  Před 4 lety +2

      Gosh yeah, I had pretty much the exact same experience. I was also in my early teens and didn't have any friends, Harry Potter was my one comfort during that time, and I felt guilty for a little a while after continuing to like the series even when Rowling made these awful statements. Reading what Daniel Radcliffe had to say really helped me, and I'm so glad I was able to do something similar for you. It's completely unfair that the creator of this series has to hold views that undermine the rights of the trans community, and I'm so sorry you had to experience the pain of that :/
      All the best 💛

    And might I suggest "In One Person", Irving's last novel and a great story about growing up and private school privilege. The title comes from a Shakespeare play, "Richard III" where Richard states "Thus play I, in one person, three. If you do read it, might I suggest talking about it on CZcams?

    Glad to see your back after your hiatus, enjoying life and kudos to the new camera setup; the improvement is obvious and being able to film outdoors adds a pleasant new element to your productions. As for Ms Rowling, I enjoyed the first book in the Potter series and found it a pleasant read and an interesting story. Book 2 was a bit too verbose- too long and a bit redundant in language. After getting in to the mid-point of Book #, I decided it was 'way too long and not advancing the language, especially those words new to the page. Like Tolkien, who wrote "The Hobbit", she seems to have buried, at least for me, the story for the weight of the language. Another transgender author, John Irving is personally a miserable person, yet his stories ("The Hotel New Hampshire", "The World According to Garp", and "In One Person", among others) are engaging, drawing the reader into the story and allowing the reader to discover new ideas about human interaction. In summary Rowling disappoints me as a person and and as an author; Irving is disappointing as a person, but writes well. In the end, the choice of support is with the reader.

      I feel like there's a long history of popular authors with controversial views. On some occasions those views deeply affect how I read their works, and at other times, it feels easier to ignore. I definitely have my qualms with Rowling's writing, as well. The HP series just touched me and helped me during a time in my life that was pretty difficult. From a critical standpoint, I could point to many flaws throughout the books, but it served as a childhood escape, and I don't think I'll ever be able to let go of that.

    My favorite stargate quote was "I'm not versed in the details, but it has something to do with flocking and togetherness". Rights are universal, itemized rights are enforced discrimination, which nullifies any authority that acts on it. The Foundation of Respect is adopting people's decisions about themselves, and not imposing them onto others. Articles from my Foundation of Civilization series~

    Idk that everyone has a right to their opinion when it's hateful. If I started vlogging and tweeting hatred towards gay and lesbian ppl, or black ppl, "Don't trust lesbian purple women in your workplace or locker rooms!" I'd be shut down in a NY minute. Rightfully so. Especially if it's unfounded... So why is ok to do it to people who transition or express gender differently? It's not ok.

    Honestly to me JK just sounds kind of confused and is surprisingly bad at expressing herself. I'm not personally bothered by it, and I also think that engaging in constructive discussion is more important than "canceling" someone if their views aren't purely and intentionally hateful (like using the N word hatefully or saying that all of a certain minority should die, etc.). But I totally get why some people might be upset about it, especially if they look up to her and are part of the group of people being talked about

    • @alliandrablack7751
      @alliandrablack7751 Před 3 lety

      I wouldn't use the word confused when describing her. Ignorant, most definitely, but that essay and handful of tweets doesn't come across to me as the words of someone confused and unable to express themself. JK most assuredly has a lot of resolve in these beliefs, and is willing to omit rather important facts in an effort to make those statements grounded in a reality that doesn't exist. For me, that doesn't denote confusion; that act is one driven by baseless prejudices for the sole purpose of endearing a crowd to the prospect of continuing to persecute trans people. If that's not hate, then JK stumbled assbackwards spectacularly into bigotry.

    Seperating art from artist is hard. Can a jew listen to or watch Wagner? Can antisemites listen to Mendelssohn, Offenbach or Meyerbeer? Complicated dilemma, but I can enjoy all of this. Harry Potter is hard for me right now, because I always had this christmas-feeling of HP and it was important for me every christmas, but I am not a christmas person anymore, tho. I am a Yule person 😂😂

    It's really ironic that she roots Harry Potter from love and acceptance. The way Harry was discrimated, the way how he learned through struggles of finding love and realizing in the end that he has always been surrounded by people love and acceptance by everyone who has looked up to him, friends, teachers and even foes. Love is the best magic that can transform even the unpure. In my opinion she's not adding more lore in the books for the sole purpose of that anymote, i feel like it's about the clout now. It hurts me to see how the person who told us to keep loving is rejecting her own ideals now for something else.

  • @aurora3655
    @aurora3655 Před 4 lety

    It's her career to destroy. People usually don't find support while spreading hatred towards a minority.
    I feel too, it's especially tough for transwomen who identify as lesbians, in regards to this type of bullshit. This type of bullshit generates hatred and fear towards transwomen. That's the point of it.
    I think(at least with western society) , we're slowly moving to a more inclusive type of society. Some things will be lost, some will things will be gained. Hopefully it becomes a more harmonious and peaceful society, less hateful and harmful, less discriminatory, less fearful; more inclusive. A place where everyone feels safe...
    Like, in actuality, this isn't much different than a racial segregation. So why is it acceptable?

    I burnt myself out on harry potter a long time ago. I watched the movies SO MANY TIMES lol. Its kinda sad the author feels that way, and it kinda makes me not want to see anything else she does or even rewatch an older movie just cause I feel like she stained her work with her ugliness. If that makes sense. I still love the movies and stuff, but the thought is always gunna be there in my head now that "a transphobe made this" idk it's hard cause I do love the movies and the actors in them, but harry potter will never be the same for me now....
