  • Camera bodies come and go, but lenses stay with you and hold their value a lot longer. In this week's video, we talk about the Fujifilm 35mm F2 lens. I mention some specs and talk about the lens itself, but this video is mainly about my experiences with the lens, the change in the focal length and how it feels to use it.

    I can remember my reaction when I saw the results from my 35mm Fujicron after my first outing with it. I was so impressed that I took my SD card to my friend's house and had him look at the jpegs (had my film sims fully tweaked out) on his pro computer monitor.
    He kept saying that I was lying... the images couldn't have come from an APS-C body. I had to insert the cards into the X-T2 and show him that they infact were SOOC jpegs. All the Fujicrons are terrific and in the "normal" range the 35mm is a must have.
    Today, the 35mm f/1.4 is my first choice, but I kept the f/2 for bad weather shooting and to use on my X-E class bodies when I want to really downsize.

    • @Jorge-Perez
      @Jorge-Perez  Před 2 lety

      Interesting to hear your thoughts! Do you feel any significant differences in focusing speeds between the F1.4 & F2? I found the F1.4 to be extremely slow, but that might be because of the X-Pro1 and not the lens itself.
      What do you think about the XF 33mm F1.4? is that something you would consider getting in the future? Or watching this type of review about that lens?
      Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts, Albert! I really appreciate it. Cheers 🙌🏼

      @albertsmith9315 Před 2 lety +2

      @@Jorge-Perez On paper and every review says the f/1.4 lens is slow (and noisy) to focus and it is indeed slower than the Fujicrons, but I shoot fairly static subjects with single point autofocus and I've never lost a shot to focus speed. My oldest camera is a X-E2s, and it is more than usable for me. I have an X-PRO2 and X-T2 as intermediate vintage bodies and the lens is very quick with these. My most current bodies are two X-T3 cameras and these are a bit quicker yet.
      I read all the reviews on the new 33mm, and the lens might be the one I would have bought if I didn't already have the 35mm f/1.4, but I love the rendering from the older lens, plus its compact size. The other selling point is that the 33mm is "future proof" based on the expected jump in megapixels in future models. This means nothing to me. I'm more than happy with 16mp, 24mp and 26mp. I would not wish to clog up my computer with giant files which would exceed any practical value for my way of shooting.

      Thanks for sharing! I hope it was useful or entertaining! And yeah I had to hunt mine for about 3 months or so. But even an expensive X-Pro1 is still significantly cheaper than an X-Pro2 or X-Pro3. Perhaps consider an X-E1, it is almost identical but without the OVF and other small differences.

    Hey Jorge, Like you I've been exclusively shooting with my X100T for years and so the 23mm focal length is like second nature to me too. But when I decided to buy a used X-Pro1 to be able to try different focal lengths the choice came quickly to the 35mm f2. I love the separation it gives as well the versatility of the length. Together with the X100T this is a perfect combination. Thanks for your videos !

      XF 35 f2

      XF 56 f1.2
      XF 90 f2
      I haven’t made any own testing but I think my X100V is noticeable sharper than the XF 23 f2. At least my copy of the two.

    Thanks I really enjoy your channel and philosophy! It would be nice a comparaison between the 23 (my main and actually only prime) and the 35. Actually when I need a different focal length I use the 18-55 but I really HATE the variable aperture and the wheel.

      Thanks for watching and for sharing a comment as well. The 23mm was my main focal length for so long that I wasn't even considering other lenses. But after I got the X-Pro1 and have the option to change lenses then I started to explore a bit.
      I think the 35mm is a great second lens to have, but the 23mm might still be my preferred one. I do find the 35mm a bit more versatile in case you'd like to try other things, like portraits, or have a bit more separation with street photography.
      It might be worth selling the 18-55 and getting a second price that matches your style and preferences! I'll think of interesting ways to compare these 2 and make a video about them! Once again, thanks for watching and for sharing a comment! Cheers 🙌🏼✨

    Great video and analysis of the lense!
    I got the XC 35mm (optically its pretty much the same as the XF) on my X-Pro1. To be honest it is my first prime, I usually shoot zooms in the 17-70 range. It is an interesting and somewhat liberating experience to only have one focal length to play around with. I have got a couple of hundred shots with the xc35mm and it is quite fun, even got a couple of keeper shots with it. However, I am not yet sure if I really click with this focal length.
    As for alternatives, a great option is the Viltrox 33mm 1.4. It is much cheaper than the XC 35mm and has an all metal build and good controls. I have it on my Z50 and the images are pretty good all things considered.

    • @Jorge-Perez
      @Jorge-Perez  Před 2 lety

      I completely agree! are you interested in trying more primes?
      Primes are the way to go. Zooms can be useful and great for learning, but primes force you to move and determine distances and focal lengths in real-time. I've heard great things about the XC 35mm, so I'm sure you're not missing out on quality. I just prefer dials that I can play with without even looking at the camera.
      Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share your thoughts as well, man, I really appreciate it 🙌🏼✨

    • @NintendoPlayBox360

      @@Jorge-Perez I probably will try more primes. Im interested in something wider, 23mm or even around 17mm. Also I am planning on getting the 80mm Viltrox for my z50.
      But in general Im pretty new to the street stuff and primes. I mostly shoot cars on meets, track days, etc and there, decent zooms are the way to go. So I will be taking it slowly, no need to spend a bunch on gear. I will be sticking with the xc35mm for at least several months before I decide to get another piece of glass.

    I bought the Fujifilm XF 35 mm f/1.4 a few years and hated it. It focused slowly and noisily. Eventually, I realized the problem was me. I tried to use it for things that were more suited to a zoom. I sold it. But things changed for me recently. I wanted to do more street photography, day and night. This time I did more research about what fit my needs and got this lens. So far, I've had three photo shoots with it, and I'm really happy. The image quality is awesome and it focuses really quickly. Even shooting my dog is a pleasure.

    xpro1 isn't weather resistant though. So it is a bit of a moot point. I personally love the 35/1.4 lens, it has become a lot faster through firmware updates and it totally usable. I also have the 35/2 lens and it is also pretty great and would be my choice when it is raining or don't need the extra shallow depth of field which is usually the case for street.

    • @Jorge-Perez
      @Jorge-Perez  Před 2 lety +1

      Depending on your preferences, the sigma does not have an aperture ring, I personally like my manual dials and knobs since I shoot mostly on manual mode. I don't want to be going into menus and changing the aperture that way, and I rather assign my custom buttons to other things like ISO.
      The sigma might be great for portraits, close-ups, etc, so if that is your style and preference, then it might be a better choice for you. Your camera is on the newer/faster side, but in my case, the Fujinon lenses help the focusing speed of older cameras like the X-Pro1, so I rather use that instead.
      Hope that helps, thanks for watching and for taking the time to share a comment as well! I appreciate it and good luck!

  • @paceyombex
    @paceyombex Před 2 lety +1

    1:39 Well, technically the 33 is not a true 50 either. The XF 50 f/2.0 and f/1.0 are true 50. I think what you're trying to say is true 50 _equivalent_ lens.
    50mm is 50mm regardless of the format. The FOV would be different for different formats tho because of the crop factor. If somebody makes XF 50 f/2.0 that could give an image circle that covers the FF sensor, then it'll offer the same FOV compared to 50mm lenses made for FF, on FF camera.

    • @Jorge-Perez
      @Jorge-Perez  Před 2 lety +2

      Correct, I'm referring to the equivalency and FOV. That is the main deciding factor I've seen people consider when picking up a lens (with crop factor cameras).
      If a person uses and likes a 50mm lens on ff and then decides to get an aps-c camera with a 50mm aps-c lens, they will be forced to a 75-80 equivalency, give or take, depending on the exact mm of the lens. In that case, people don't say to themselves "ah yes, a true 50mm lens", they will most likely have issues with the fov and buy a 35mm lens instead.
      Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share a comment as well! I appreciate it ✨🙌🏼

    • @paceyombex
      @paceyombex Před 2 lety +3

      @@Jorge-Perez Yup, for most people the FOV is what matters when deciding which lens to get. But the concept of "50 is 50" is useful because different focal length tends to have their own characteristic. Wider lens tends to have barrel distortion, while longer lens tends to have pincushion distortion, for example.
      50mm in FF is on the longer end of the "standard" focal length. If you want to match the FOV of 50mm in FF while using APS-C, you need to use something wider (35 or 33) because of the crop factor. Yup you get the equivalent FOV, but you will also get some wide angle characteristics (some distortion, for example).
      If you are using 50mm on APS-C, you'll get the typical neutral character of a 50mm lens, but you don't get the FOV that you want also because of the crop factor.
      What I'm trying to say is each focal length has their own character, and that doesn't change regardless of the format. Only the FOV changes.
      Thank you for the response btw, and great video!
