I like this formula of cost cutting in build quality but maintain the quality optics and electronics.
Me too. I hope they do a 16mm
That's essentially how Tamron manages to do what they do. (Though that's for designing a new lens rather than redoing an existing one.)

Just ordered an XT4 and looking for my first lens. This lens is a really attractive proposition!
@@craftributeartdecor7493 if i have an X-T4 i'd rather save up the extra $$ to complete the weather sealing from both the body and the lens. Just something to consider.
Hi Chris, you are an authority on lenses ! Simply love the way you go about reviewing lenses. Big thanks for the great work.
I was waiting for this. Thank you so much!
I never regret buying this lens. XT 20 + XC 35mm is the best combination available
i am happy to hear this does a quality job with a $200 price cut always a great review chris
Your reviews are the best...big thumbs up
I’d like to see 2 or 3 more primes from Fuji like this. There’s no question I’d like the more expensive options with weather sealing and though one can do better on the used versions, Fujifilm lenses are spendy even used. Lenses like this 35 F/2 are great for 64 year old hobbyists like me who recently purchased a like new X-T2 and Fujifilm 18-55mm at a terrific price.
Just received mine and is spectacular and functional.
This could be Fujifilm's equivalent to "nifty-fifty"
I would love a XC23mm f2. That would be so awesome
Viltrox 23mm 1.4
Tell Fuji! They're quite good at listebning to their customers
Got the XC35 since Thursday and i like it!
@@christopherfrost How can you tell them?
@@christopherfrostNot so sure about that - 3 years later and no others in sight 😕
Pretty outstanding for the price 😮

Thanks for your review
How is the image quality comparing with kit 15-45mm lens?
that jazz music in the background 👍🏼👍🏼
Been with this for a few months now and my only complaint is that the mount feels a bit loose and wiggly. Anyone knows if you can swap tge plastuc screw with that of some $5 chinese macro ring or something? Any way to add a few 10ths of mm to the existing one?
Im just think about this lens and you reviewed that at same time!🙂
Christopher, do you find the autofocus is louder on the XC than the XF? Thanks!
Is it possible to replace the plastic lens mount with a metal one?
If this all-plastic lens weighs 130g, then it seems like an absolute miracle that the all-metal f/1.4 only weighs around 185g! I don't mind a lens that's predominantly high-quality plastic, but I wish they'd at least use a metal mount :(
Xlent christopher. Your reviews r awesome. Please review viltrox 23mm f1.4. Thanks.
how is the low light with this? or night shots
Can you use the XC 35mm on the XT - 100?
0:05 I’d be really glad if Fujifilm made an XF 35mm f1.2 lens 🙂
Great review as always.
They have the 35 f/1.4, a third of a stop would not make any significant difference
@@quangpham4372 he probably wants the bokeh
Well they have 3 35mm lenses now. I don't think they will make another one, specially because there is a 1.4 already.
Get the Mitakon 35/0.95 instead, it's an excellent lens
And only $400 too
Hello! Does it have better quality than the viltrox?
2:30 mine doesn't just make a whirring sound it is loud , is it faulty ? should I return ıt?
My lens that I just bought noisy when focusing. When camera on and off make some noise too. Is it Ok for that lens to be noisy or should I return it ASAP????
im just kinda confused what the c mean in the name. Will it work with my xt200?
Thanks Chris!
FUJIFILM XC 35mm f/2 Lens vs 7artisans Photoelectric 35mm f/1.2 Lens. What you suggest?
Great review as always. Very intriguing. I have an x-e3 and the 27/2.8 I use for street shooting because it's so small. I may have to give this a shot.
So I’m planning on getting a x-e3 just for starters. I actually thought of the x100f but again. I’ll be completely new to the Fuji system so if you could tell me how’s the x-e3 and also I’m planning to get the xc 35mm with it.

Hi Chris, I'm wonder about those digits on your hand, what doest it mean?
I bought this last week, its been great and I really hope they make a 50mm F2
how is the manual focus of this lens on video ? is it smooth ?
@@berat_dede_1 not really though. It comes with the setting on your camera.
Sounds like an excellent crop sensor version of a full size nifty fifty lens.
great review. Is it also compatible with X-E2?
Hi Christopher, thank you for your review. This lens is € 200 in the Netherlands new. The viltrox 33 1.4 is € 330 new. Which would you consider if you could choose?
Better fujinon glass
When possible, can you please review the xf 10-24? Thanks :)
i hope they do one 23mm as well
The lack of an aperture ring is the only thing that bothers me about this lens. I’m still very glad they decided to make it. I hope the 23 and 50 get the same treatment.
It's trickier to use the front dial to change aperture, seriously
I am having a hard time choosing a 35mm for my Fuji..

Hi, Christopher, I'm getting the fuji xt-30 with this lens. Is this a good choice for a all day carry around camera kit?
Take a look at this video, and you'll see!
nice video as always, chris. can you post a macro shot of your test chart's fine lines?
That would probably push my test chart's resolution a bit too much!
@@christopherfrost sure thing but it would be interesting to see how it really looks.
of course doesn't have to be actually macro, a good close-up shot will do.
just as a reference, to put the test results of your lenses into perspective.
would be especially neat for the announced "sharpest lenses ever"-video that's on the way.
keep up the good work!
I've been looking for an affordable, good quality lense for Fuji for quite some time now and I think the xc's are a great idea. But I'm torn between this lense and the upcoming Viltrox 33. The fuji seems to deliver the better picture quality but I don't like the build quality that much
Hi, what have you chosen?
Hey Chris, can i request a review video that you're using a6000/a5100 using sigma 10-20mm f3.5 ex dc hsm (you can use any adapter)
Nice review! I have a fujifilm x-t20 with the xf 18-55mm, If I buy this lens, will it help me take much better portrait pictures than the XF Kit lens? Especially in the evening in low light?
It'll be a small improvement, yes
I'm gonna buy this lens and used XT20
Which lens have ois?
I think camera companies have got to reduce their focus on “Pro” cameras and lenses and realise a lot of people doing photography are weekend hobbyists. This means we don’t get to use our cameras every day and find it hard to rationalise the expenditure on “built like a tank” lenses. The demise of the Olympus camera division should be a wake up call to surviving camera companies that the market is reducing and cheaper products are required to keep the company afloat. The difference in price, often double, of similar lenses say from Nikon and Canon to Tamron and Sigma is telling you that there is a lot of price gouging in the lens market. I hope Fuji does really well with this lens because I think this lens is the way of the future.
What are you talking about? Olympus is still around making new cameras and isn’t defunct. I do agree with your larger point though that camera manufacturers should be targeting the entry level market more to try to get new customers hooked into the hobby and their system in particular. The fact that every manufacturer doesn’t have a sub-$200 nifty fifty equivalent seems like a huge missed opportunity.
This lens manual/auto focus?
Why focus pulling is bad ?
Is there any possibility for a review of Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR? I am really interested in this lens but a can't find any trusty review like yours out there. By the way, great review, a great option but I would love to see an XC 23mm f/2 by Fuji as soon as possible! Καλημέρα απο Ελλάδα!
A review of that lens is coming soon(ish)
@@christopherfrost great news! Thanks a lot!
What lens hood is on it at beginning of video? Does it come with it?
That comes with the XF 35mm f2 not with the XC 35mm F2
We desperately need the XC version of the 23mm f2.
This or the Viltrox 33mm 1.4, which one would be better? I am just a casual photographer, I love bokeh, but I also really care about IQ
the issue with the Viltrox is that in any moment Fuji can put up an update that changes the algorithm slightly and you lose the AF (i dont think they will but theres also a possibility since Viltrox is doing AF lenses without Fujis permission). I'd say go for the Fuji XF as your main lens and you can experiment with 3rd party later on
The Viltrox will give you much more out of focus backgrounds, and this lens will be sharper
Funny. My 16mm f2.8 also hás bad close up sharpness. Which lens is good for close ups?
There are so many Fuji lenses which are bad for close up sharpness. Maybe the 50mm f/2 is okay? I can't remember, take a look at my reviews :-)
@@christopherfrost There's not really many that are bad tbh, only the F2 primes really and the 2.8 16mm, unless you care to add more? The 16 1.4 is about the best, the 35 1.4 isn't bad actually, the 50 F2 is sharp as you like at it's closest, it's just not all that close but is definitely still sharp
i want one!
Can i used Fujifilm xt-30
35mm this lense.
Yes
Let's hope for an xf50mm f2!
You mean, XC version :-)
Please review the Viltrox 33mm 1.4 After this Chris....most people have been giving it great reviews andI'd love to see yours.
I already have :-)
@@christopherfrost I saw it already. Think I'm going to get myself one. Thanks again 👍
Nice video, will you do a review on voltrox 33mm as well?
I have done already
@@christopherfrost thanks a lot!
@ 0.8sec, its not 1.2 lens its 2 lens..nice review
Well, it turns out it really was a risk for Fuji...
The XC 35 is nowhere to be found where I live, I managed to snag the very last one off my local store (the reason it wasn't sold already is beacause it was the exposition model), it is not available on amazon either, despite being lauched fairly recently compared to the XF model.
My theory is that the XC and XF models being so close optically, so different in price and that most people don't care about the advantages the XF model provides like weather sealing or the aperture ring.
That's kind of a shame, imagine if fuji released a full line of XC primes with the same formula they used with that particular one. We'd have 200USD or so 16mm 2.8, 23mm f2, 35mm f2 and 50mm f2. For someone on a budget with a small camera like and X-T20/30 or even the smaller X-E or X-A models, that could have been a complete kit on the cheap. Now if you want a compact lens on a compact camera, you'll have to pay for weather sealing that you don't need cause your camera body isn't either :(
Excellent lens overall but my copy is really soft at 2.0....
Do you think this lens would be good for making youtube videos?
Sure although it's not a very wide angle
@@christopherfrost Thank you
Love Fuji cameras but hate dealing with X-Trans RAW files, hope they start using Bayer in their cameras again
They use Bayer for their affordable cameras. The best you can get is either the XT 200 or the XA 7. They are nifty in their own right.
whats wrong with their X-Trans Raw? what software are you using?
Learn to PP XT files properly, ease up on the sharpening and learn to mask. I use LR, have done for ages with Fuji XT files and suffer none of the issues I see other complain about. Or, switch to Capture one.
"barely audible to the human ear" - guess there is something wrong with my lens then, because its sounds squeeky weird when shifting from close to far.. Maybe it would be alot faster and more silent on a more expensive camera than the X-T100 but i dont know..
Auto focus?
Dope pic at 4:49
I wonder if a certain Viltrox Lens has Fuji led to the decision to release it.
@@aceflibble Fuji's Achilles heel has always been their lens prices. Not an issue for pro cameras perhaps, but for XT and other entry level cameras there was nothing like Canon's 50 or pancakes lenses. Unlike those, the Fuji FX has a plastic lens mount which is off-putting.
Mines is in the mail.

This or the Viltrox 33mm F 1.4 ? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!
Viltrox was Recommended, but this Fuji was Highly Recommended. In addition, native optics should give more correct colors.
Question: really the exact same optics? Comparing your two reviews Christopher, the more expensive XF 35 looks at F2 much worse at the edge (3:05) than the XC 35 at F2 at the edge (3:38)!
I'm not familiar with this lens, but two earlier XC zooms have parallel optical formulae to more expensive XF lenses: the XC18-50 F/3.5+ and XC50-230mm F4.5+(?) are akin to the XF18-55mmF2.8-4 and XF50-200mm. The quality control (i.e. unit variation) and materials are of a lower standard. I'm not sure why the specs differ as they do, perhaps due to simpler construction, but I recall that Fuji stated this in some interviews years ago. Several people have reported being impressed with those XC zooms, and even selling the XF counterparts for them (though, clearly, plenty of people still prefer the XF versions.)
Could you please add pentax to your testing? Both bodies and lenses are very cheap on the used market but have good image quality.
Sorry, but there's so little demand for Pentax reviews. It's just not a popular brand, and in order to be cost effective, I can only make reviews that will be watched by a good number of people.
Christopher Frost Photography Understandable. Thanks for the reply.
One of the finest lens for photography 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 but sucks equally for video.. huge focus breathing 😭😭😭😭
XC stands for Xtra Cheap!
Good lens, but I think the xf version is safe.
With you on the crappy close up image quality, is a creamy bokeh bargain still!! 😁
I bought it and mounted on my X-T1, it shows "please turn off camera and turn on again". And take it to Fuji-repair, it turns out what I bought is a flaw camera. emm......QUALITY!eww...
Flaw lens. Sorry.
Seriously what is it with all these mirrorless lenses having pronounced distortions and vignetting. When mirrorless systems were introduced, one of the key selling points was that the new mounts allowed lens designs with virtually no distortion and vignetting. 2020, most lenses have strong distortion and vignetting....🙄
Focus is not smooth in manual mode. So those who want to buy manual lens then buy ttartisan 35mm 1.4
An excellent lens but I can't understand companies a metal mount would have cost about £1.50 more.
XC lenses are as compact and lightweight as possible
Market segmentation.
The cost of a metal part being added on might be a little more than that actually. It'll take a bit of extra labour to attach it on, and this lens is so inexpensive that they'll want to cut corners wherever possible. Also , they don't want to cut out the sales of the original WR version of the lens too much
While this XC version is going to deter the beginners from purchasing the XF version, at some point Fuji knows that they are going to want to upgrade to the XF or even the faster version. I consider these cheap beginner entry level lenses a trap by a company to sell not one but two or three lenses in the long run. I never purchase an entry level lens unless it has a specific feature (ie. size and weight) that I really need for my work.
Next time you renview another DSLR lens.I want you use 4 to 5 camera for see the image quality Christ.
The video will be extremely long and boring if I do that!
Fuji nifty thirty🧐
Congratulations pn the baby Chris. I believe you and wifey are expecting a girl??????
Bokeh looks smoother than 10x expensive 56mm F1.2 lens
F4 for sharp image= pass
The problem with plastic lens is that they can warp, expand and contract easily with heat. So the formula in the optics may be adjusted + -. It may looks good at first time buy, but after using in various conditions, the optics will downgrade.
Nonsense ... I don't know why people post such terrible info, I've had numerous plastic mount lenses and used them in all sorts of conditions for years and not one of them ever suffered such an issues. Metal can warp too btw, and is actually much more likely to bend and disfigure a lens if dropped than a plastic mount
No aperture ring.... ew.
It's not really that much of a problem
First world problems ... if you shot Nikon a lot of their G type lenses have no aperture ring and I've never seen any Nikon user moan about this
Praveen Kumar
Focus Breathing is *Horrible* .
I thought You are Zooming in !
That plastic lens-mount is a travesty to Fuji's pedigree.
Not for $200
this lens is pure crap, the distortion is incredibly strong and the image quality just average. very disappointed
Whats the point, its not full frame and fuji won't make a full frame so you're locked in a system that goes nowhere, while some of the others do. That AF shudder is rubbish. This is another lens for suckers from Fuji, BUT DON'T FORGET TO BUY IT WITH A REBATE! When their lenses go on sale every few months.
