    In this video I want to answer the question, is the new Viltrox 33mm 1.4 lens a good entry-point for newer photographers looking to get into Fuji X with a "nifty fifty" equivalent lens? Or would you be better off with maybe the 35mm f2 XC?
    Viltrox sent us the lens for review, however we do not keep lenses sent to us for review. It will be given away in a future video as soon as we've had time to see updated firmware and long term review.

    This lens/brand and Fuji's new stance on 3rd party lenses changes everything. I *adore* Fuji but their lenses are honestly way too overpriced sometimes, with no budget alternatives, which makes owning the system kind of a problem for broke people like me. Even though I'm completely in love with Fuji I've discouraged several friends from buying into the system because I just knew they wouldn't have enough money to buy any of the good lenses. But now that we can get solid primes for under $300? *That* changes everything. That might finally make Fuji a solid competition against Sony and Canon's line of good budget lenses.

    Hi! There have been a bunch of firmware updates released for this lens. Last update notes:
    1. Adjust the minimum focus distance
    2. Optimised focus performance
    3. Fixed the problem of focus hunting on some camera models。
    Earlier releases also corrected a lot of other focusing and stabilisation issues. I'm very curious about your opinion now.

      The weather sealing is a sell for me. Honestly modern sensors just get much better performance at higher ISO that I don't need to go into those sub 1.8 apertures. The f2 is about $300 on the used market and am looking at adding that. Right now I have a Meike 35mm 1.7 ($70) on my Fuji and I like the focal length.

    The most important note of this review is the real light gathering of the lenses. On the 35mm F2 you can get almost same amount of light and better image handling wide open, less blur but it can get better closeup, plus WR.. something can't solve a firmware update. Interesting comparison, not just a showcase ;)

My plan was to test them during week, make decision and return one of them back to shop. I cannot be more suprised - I didn't need week, not day, not one hour. After few shoots I can tell you that Sigma for Fujifilm is much more SHARPER, of course it has BETTER BOKEH (I cant compare with fujinon 23 f1.4, but this one has old SLOOOWER AF speed). • @toopkarcher
    @toopkarcher Před 4 lety +7

    From what I can tell, the bokeh really isn't that different at all. For some off reason, at 35mm the difference between f2 and f1.4 isn't very big at all. This is why I went back to the 35mmf2. Faster, quieter, smaller. It misses that 3d effect that the f1.4 gives but a trade off is a trade off.
    Comparing the 35mmf2 and 33mmf1.4, the 35 looks sharper for sure and suffers less from CA etc. Also, that build quality is fantastic. I think the increase in price is justified but $ for $, they're probably equivalent.

    Honestly, Fujifilm just made some good and cheap prime lenses that are unbeatable at a certain point, especially the 23,33,50mm f/2, its cheap, its sharp, its fast, its small, its lightweight. 3rd party companies seem not to spend that many resources for APSC lens make Fujifilm in a leading position.

  • @zacharybellino6877
    @zacharybellino6877 Před 3 lety

    Great review, as usual!
    I think saying it is 1/2 stop darker is a bit overstated. I have seen another reviewer bench their other lenses based on exposure, and found it about 20%.
    But more interestingly, Viltrox is releasing the same optical formula in a cine-lens. They labelled it as T/1.5, that is 17% of a stop darker. Given the evidence I have seen, T/1.5 seems more accurate to me.
    Personally, owning the 35mm f2, I don't think the difference between T/1.4 and T/1.5 is really worth considering as a "con," especially considering that Fuji bakes vignette correction into my Fujicrons (which I love) automatically raising exposure in the edges and inducing some light noise at higher ISOs in those regions.
    If I were a videographer, it would be imperative to know the T-stop. Exposure homogeneity is critical given the amount of frames you need to process.

      thegeneral123 I am also worried about the clickless aperture ring, i mean...for less than 300$ (about 260-280) you can get a mostly decent 50mm eq. at f1.4!
      It’s not that bad at all.
      If only they made a smaller form factor (like the original Fuji 35mm) with a normal aperture ring i could have bought it like instantly!

      @@tommasomencarelli7952 Big lenses don't really bother me. I rock the 16mm F1.4 and the 55-200 with the 18-55 all the time. One thing though that I mentioned to Viltrox was the lack of weathersealing. If they had offered a version of the lens with a normal click aperture ring and weather sealing. It would have been a killer if the lens is fast and sharp.
      The other thing though that annoys me is how they blatantly saw the positive reaction to the 33mm and jacked the price up for the 23mm. That just struck me as greedy. I bet the 55mm F1.4 will be even more expensive still.

    Did you mention weather resistance? (I might have missed it.) I limit my kit to WR Fuji lenses, as I do a lot of hiking, travel, and outdoors exploration. For me, a weather resistant lens is a necessity because of the reality of exposure to rain, sleet, and snow. Thanks as always for your excellent work.

    Finally someone that I can relate too, I had both 35mm f1.4 & F2 & I couldn’t see the magic that every was raving on about with the 1.4’ version? So o sold it and kept the F2 which is great, optically I couldn’t see any difference in them both regarding IQ.

    • @AndrewGoodCamera
      @AndrewGoodCamera  Před 4 lety +2

      Haha. Yup. I am constantly hearing about the "magic". I don't think they would be able to tell the difference in a blind test. I'd make a video testing the theory, but that'd be a little like ruining Christmas. As long as they are happy. :)

    • @cameralabvietnam
      @cameralabvietnam Před 4 lety

      The “magic” of the 35mm 1.4 maybe is the way the len renders color in certain light conditions combine with how natural the shallow depth at 1.4 just “clicks” with the field of view that results in a very “analog” feel that many people are pleased of. But indeed, only under specific conditions, otherwise the image quality between the 1.4 and the f2 are pretty much the same.

    • @AndrewGoodCamera
      @AndrewGoodCamera  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes, you are demonstrating what I always say. When people claim a lens is magic they tend to reference color rendering. It's the easiest to claim and hardest to disprove that there is nothing magical about most gear. But if the lens makes you happy, that's certainly important as it transfers directly into feeling inspired and being excited to shoot. Heaven knows I do that myself with my favorite lens, the 16mm 1.4. Though, if I'm honest, there's nothing particularly special about it that couldn't be beat or duplicated by a third party in short order.

    Why would the 33 f1.4 allow for more light when stopped down to the same aperture? At f2 they should be roughly equivalent.

    • @AndrewGoodCamera
      @AndrewGoodCamera  Před 4 lety

      F or aperture value is the ratio of the system's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil. It says nothing about the quality of glass used or amount. To measure light, manufacturer's would need to use t-stops.

    • @emotionblur7214
      @emotionblur7214 Před 4 lety

      @@AndrewGoodCamera You shot with both lenses at f2 and you got the same histograms, and that only means that they both let the same light through at that aperture. Where did you get the "only half stop brighter" result from? You should have set the Viltrox at f1.4 for that comparison.

    • @AndrewGoodCamera
      @AndrewGoodCamera  Před 4 lety +1

      @Emotion Blur, I did NOT get the same histogram. The 35mm f2 allows more light in at f2. Many people miss the fact that f-stop does NOT measure light allowance. Different lenses will allow different amount of light at the same aperture, as is the case here. The Viltrox is a bout a half a stop darker at f2. Hopefully that makes sense.

    I have the 35 f1.4 and it's a great lens albeit slow focusing but for those who are on a budget and want a faster lens, the XC 35 f2 looks like an interesting. I am still filling out the rest of my focal length lineup. But the XC since it performs as well as the XF version looks like it could be a good companion for my XF f1.4 for daytime street shooting.

    So yeah. The Fuji 35mm f2 is pricey, but the performance, the size and build quality outruns the competitor from Viltrox.
    For a beginner the price difference can be the thing to choose the Viltrox, but I'd still recommend the Fuji to them because it will please them more when they are getting more experienced and want to get more out of their photography.
    Also it's probably a better starting point to start with f2 lenses, because otherwise the rabbit hole of "needing" big aperture (1.4 and bigger) lenses is way to easy to fall in to, once they are used to that.
