  • Viltrox 33mm Fuji lens review for Fujifilm cameras. Also, the Viltrox 33mm vs. Fuji 35mm lens on shooting scenarios and a tutorial/discussion about exposure and aperture issues hopefully addressed by firmware updates. IMPORTANT: Viltrox released a Firmware update that fixes some of these issues! Please see my recent videos on this.
    ** IMPORTANT NOTES ON THIS VIDEO **
    1. Minimum focus distance info published by Viltrox is 40cm. My tests in the real world showed 38cm. (less is better of course)
    2. Lens is $279 not $270 as mentioned in video. My mistake on that one. Guilty as charged.
    3. Some tests/scenes in the video were left on the cutting room floor for time purposes. One in particular showed a test against lens flaring. This lens does have some lens flaring that’s noticeable and you can see a brief shot of this very early on in the video when I pan down from the trees.

    3. Fixed the problem of focus hunting on some camera models。

      Hey Adson!!! First off, a major shoutout to Brazil. I love that country and have spent some time in both Manaus, Belem, and Rio. And about a week or so down the Amazon. One day I would love to go back. Yes, the 33 mm is a great lens - and the latest firmware update seems to have solved the primary issue that I had with it regarding the aperture shifting. Viltrox has been quite responsive with their firmware upgrade so in all cases I think this is a great budget prime lens to consider. Take care buddy!!!

    Great review as always. 👌 the issues you mention are probably mostly down to the fact that it is a reversed engineered lens. The camera sometimes doesnt want to cooperate. I think these issues could be partly resolved with a firmware upgrade but I would advice everyone to wait a bit for more 3rd party af lenses to be released. Fuji opened their x mount protocol to more established and experienced makers

    • @pal2tech
      @pal2tech  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Xristos! You are absolutely 100% correct. In fact, I wish I had mentioned the part about the reverse engineering more in the video. I did mention it in the review of the 85 mm but it definitely would've been helpful to have also mentioned it in this video. For what it's worth, they did release a firmware upgrade a few days ago that resolved the major issue that I was having with the aperture jump. I was pretty surprised that they were able to get this done so quickly. And thank you for your kind words! I hope all is well…

    Glad to see this. I am definitely looking at the 23mm 1.4 since I do have the 35 f2. Given the good stuff I've seen on this, and their other X lens, I am pretty confident that I'll find it a worthy add-on with my Fuji primes (35, 56).

    I used to own the Sigma’s Trio lenses (16mm, 30mm, 56mm f/1.4) prime and I am quite happy with their sharpness wide open at f/1.4. Will this Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 meet that expectation or I am better off with the XF 35mm f/2.0 or 35mm f/1.4? Lets just say the VIltrox 33mm and the XF 35mm f/2.0 is both well within my budget. I am a casual hobbyist with some paid gigs on the side.

  • @parooweu
    @parooweu Před 4 lety +1

    Great review, thanks! Couple questions - how would you compare the overall characteristics of the 33mm and 35 f2 in terms of shooting wide open? I'm asking because from what I see the "1.4" opening on Viltrox seems a little bit exagerrated and in terms of subject isolation looks closer to 1.8 or 2.0 to me. Also can you see the one stop difference in exposure between these two wide open?

    • @pal2tech
      @pal2tech  Před 4 lety +6

      Hi Pawel, great questions. I do not see a one-stop difference in exposure between these two lenses wide open. I see less than one stop. In other words, I don't believe you are getting one complete full stop of light more with the Viltrox. You do get more light for sure, but just not on full stop. I would not recommend this lens if you are purely looking for that extra wide aperture. The f/2 .0 is more than enough for subject isolation. Rather, the main reason for this lens would be to get into a 33 mm prime at the reduced cost of it being a third-party lens.

    I just got the lens a week ago. Very soft wide open. CA is quite prominent but fixable quickly. I also have the Fujifilm 35 f/1.4 which has less CA. I am using the newest firmware version 1.0.6. Needs to be stopped down to at least f/2.5 for improved resolution.

  • @ReinisInkens
    @ReinisInkens Před 4 lety +1

    Thanks for the review and the following firmware update video! I'm not so sure that I'll purchase the Viltrox anymore. The clickless aperture ring now seems more like a gimmick than something actually useful for video shooters. And I've seen others say that the light gathering capacity isn't actually a full stop brighter than the Fujifilm f2 version, do you have any experience with that? If that's the case, I might as well go with the xc35mm. Smaller and cheaper.

    • @pal2tech
      @pal2tech  Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah, that's a solution for sure. I'm reviewing the Viltrox 23 now and it also has the clickless ring... it seems lens manufacturers are pushing that as a feature to reduce click sounds during video aperture changes. Honestly, I see about the same level of light between this lens and the f/2 version from Fuji. Not that noticeable.

    Hi Chris, I have question which I think you might be able to help me, again :) I am doing multi-cam video's. Just done one with 2 Fuji's shooting in 4k (to Ninja V's/ssd) 1 over head camera in 1080 to SD card, 1 Nikon in 1080 to QXD card and Go pro in Linear view at 1080. All imported to FCPx and a multi-cam made, the New Project created on 1080 timeline. Have I lost the 4k resolution of the 2 4 k camera clips? (Planned on cutting in and transforming those shots)
    Should I have made a 4k timeline instead, then edited, then EXPORT as 1080 (I made a preset called CZcams 1080 which shrinks project) I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance.

    • @pal2tech
      @pal2tech  Před 4 lety

      Hi Lawrence, yeah I believe you need to have a 4K timeline for that. Could you try creating another project in 4K, then copy paste whatever edits you have made over into that new projects timeline? I think I'm understanding you correctly but would need to see a little more details to be sure. Either way, if the project is 1080 then if you are going and exporting to 4K you would be upscaling which is far worse than the reverse.

    Great video sir! So what about if you don’t own either and you are considering between the Fuji 35mm 1.4 vs the Viltrox 33mm 1.4? I just got my XT4 in the other day with my first Fuji lens (16mm 1.4) and I’ve got the Viltrox 33mm on order. I’m all about quality but I’m not sure Fuji’s is worth $300 more. If you have any comparisons I would love to check them out!

However, from what I am reading online, a number of people mentioned that the quality of the Fuji lens is better. Is that the Fuji lens you are referring to?

    • @RockyColaFizz
      @RockyColaFizz Před 4 lety +1

      C Rankin hi. I have both the Viltrox 33 1.4 and the 35 f2. The Viltrox is much snappier to focus in video, without nearly as much of the focus pulsing you see when the 35 f2 first acquires focus. You can slow down the AF speed for the 35 f2 though so focus racks less jarringly. I have found that no matter what focus speed you use on the camera the Viltrox always stays the same and snaps to focus instantly. But it’s not jarring, just fast. Also, the 35mm f2 is dead silent when focusing, but you can hear the Viltrox focus in video, even with a shotgun mic like a Rode. However it’s just barely audible. Nothing as loud as like the 1.4 Fuji Primes. So, if the 35mm f2 was a zero on the noise scale, and the Fuji 1.4 Primes were a 10, the Viltrox focus noise is a 2. Hope that helps.

      Overall I found the autofocus to be fine. Not incredible but not bad either. Keep in mind that I probably would never use a lens like this for professional video and instead would simply pull focus on a manual cine lens but if you needed autofocus for video I don't see any problem with this lens and it seemed to handle quite well in my tests.

    Hey Chris, thanks for this review, a fantastic one as always!! Completely out of of the subject, I'd love you to do a video on this subject: I have an X-T3, a Godox V860II and the X-ProF trigger. It happens to me that when I'm shooting in complete darkness, or in darkness because I want a fast aperture and low ISO and rely just on the flash, with the TTL function ON, I need the camera's LED light to help me frame, but the behaviour of the camera is really weird.... I have the AF Illuminator function ON in the menu, but most of the time I have to frame by intuition, or do a couple of 'blind' shots to know exactly where to frame.... I've tried both options with the X-ProF light (side of the trigger light OFF and ON, beside the ON button/click), and going to the camera's flash menu to try different options with the led light, but no solid results, most of the time shooting 'blindly'.... Have to say that the last 2 options in the camera's flash menu (Master Setting & Channel Setting) are always non-available, but that must be because I'm shooting TTL, but depending on the X-ProF's light click is ON or OFF, the camera lets me choose or not the behaviour of the led ligth.... Do I miss something?? Or it's just my camera's led light that doesn't work correctly??
    Many Thanks!!

      @pal2tech  Před 4 lety

      Hi there. Question, is it that you simply can't see the scene in the viewfinder? It's too dark? That is an easy fix where you can go into the menu settings and turn off preview exposure in white balance and you will get your view back. Or am I missing the issue altogether?

    • @pal2tech
      @pal2tech  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Claus, that's a really good question. Video shooting is a completely different set of requirements and neither lens has optical image stabilization which is very important for video. The #1 question I have for you is: are you using an X-T3 or would it be for an X-T4? If it is in X-T4, then I would consider the Viltrox 33 mm because you have a slightly wider angle field-of-view and you'd save some cash. If you have an X-T3, then the decision becomes a lot more difficult because how are you going to stabilize the lens? If you have a gimbal, then either lens would work fine and I would probably in that case suggest the Fuji if you can afford the extra cash. If not, the Viltrox is fine because the autofocus works very well on that lens as well. Remember though that with shooting video you really would not be using autofocus much on a number of projects. Again, all this depends on your shooting style, whether it is paid or hobby, the type of shots you are trying to get, and so forth. Overall, for video shooting, I still believe the single best lens you can use on the Fuji film camera considering the price, ease of use, reliability, image quality, is the 18-55, especially because of the OIS. I made a video about it here: czcams.com/video/69l2ezEFamU/video.html. Don't laugh though, it was one of my first videos when I was just getting started so the quality is kind of bad. However, I still stand by all of the information in that video and think that would actually be the best lens you could use for video.

      Hi Toby, believe it or not I am not sure! It was the bottom of one of my gimbals (the DJI one for the smartphone I think) and I believe I had taken it from a different gimbal a long time ago. It is not a tripod per se but a simple little cheap accessory that came bundled with a gimbal that allowed you to balance the gimbal while holding it upright so you would not have to hold the gimbal in your hand. I simply unscrewed it from the gimbal since I didn't use it and use it for the demo. I looked at it just now and it does not have any markings nor does it have any information written on it whatsoever as to the make or model number or even brand. So, I guess it's called the "Mystery Gimbal Thing" and it may be the only one on planet Earth!

Yes, money can be certainly tight particularly for some users overseas with the exchange rates, etc. And now because of the pandemic I think everyone is watching their money even more. For the money, it's a great lens - but of course one has to look at all of the options, including whether or not one is shooting photos professionally or just as a hobby, the type of photos, etc. And also, interestingly, the focal length of 33 for me seem to work better than 35. I feel like I'm going crazy or something (probably am with this pandemic), but when I was out shooting with both the focal range of 33 seem to just be better overall for me. That being said, the Fuji lenses being native if you can afford them are definitely the way to go.

      LOL, good catch. MOST DEFINITELY YES YES YES YES!!! Testing it now. That video is going to take a bit longer than others because of how much I need to review... AND Fuji didn't include frigging batteries in the grip -- so I'm waiting on those (I only have one battery) and need 3 to test properly with the grip.

    I have an old Hungarian journal from the day when Gagarin went to the cosmos:) On the top, there is a red title. “The first man in the space!!!”
    About Fuji and Vitrox. From my fix lens series a 33 or 35 mm fix is missing. I was wandering about a manual lens but I changed my mind. AF lens gives me a better freedom. I do not run to buy one immediately. I wait for your video about FW update.

      Hey Laszlo! Wow, that is an amazing souvenir to have! Very, very cool… Yes, I think they will have a firmware update very soon. They really have been responsive and I was happy to hear they reached out to the other CZcamsr Andrew. Stay tuned and I will let you know once it is released and if it is worth getting. I hope you are doing well and please stay safe!

      Hey Wayne! Interestingly Viltrox released a firmware upgrade just several days after the video was made. And, believe it or not, fixed the main issue that I had. I was pretty surprised they were able to get that done so quickly. But yeah, it definitely needed one for sure. Hey I hope you are doing well! Stay safe…

    It's weird how the same lense perfroms differently on Sony vs Fuji. In my experience the the Viltrox 33 works perfectly on my Sony.
    BTW, for people testing the lens in 2023, make sure you update the firmware.

      Hi there, I am planning to buy a 30mm lens and am having hard choosing either sigma 30mm f1.4 or the viltrox 30mm f1.4?
      May I know how well does your viltrox 33 perform?
