I brought this and the 18-55mm on my 3 week trip through Europe. I almost never pulled the zoom out of the bag because the 35mm pleased me every time.
I use both of these lenses. Love the 18-55 because of the flexibility but I know what you mean in regards to the 35mm. Literally every shot is sooo good ^^
That would be a great travel combo! That’s my favourite travel kit: one prime and one zoom.
Doesn't realy matter the image stabilisation?
I really have to say: Your reviewing of the lenses is among the best and most professional ones that I have seen on the CZcams. It's quite helpful in choosing the right lens.
I don’t even shoot Fuji...but if Chris uploads, I watch
🤣🤣🤣
Your reviews are so insightful that I watch them just for practice, without any interests for the lenses or cameras, maybe one day I can afford a Fuji but for now I'm happy with my Canon m100, btw, your reviews also brought priceless insight on how to use the kit lens for the best quality, keep up the good work !
I'm a big fan of your reviews and I really appreciate your work. Your reviews are the best, thanks.
Hey man, I really appreciate how thorough and honest your reviews are. VERY helpful!
Glad to help!
The Lens Hood Kinder Egg surprise remark tho 😂😂😂😂
dont say that too loud. otherwise the US will ban them
Comedic gold
I'm not quite yet a photographer but I feel the pull to dive into this wonderful world of photography, and you are quite frankly the only place on CZcams with a formula that explains complex lens systems in layman terms, which is something that takes knowledge and a deft touch. I am learning quite a lot from you and wanted to give my thanks for your efforts and know that it is appreciated. I for one know that it'll help me make an informed purchase when I decide to make the step forward.
Glad to be of service!
This is why I prefer British reviewers, straight to the point, no bs, with occasional subtle humor. Of course, they can actually speak English.
Thank you. Been waiting for your review on this fuji 35mm F2 and many other fuji F2 prime.
I have this lens and I love it. Distortion can be a problem if you're in a small room (you will notice that barreling), but besides that, the pictures it delivers are always a really nice surprise when you look at them back at home.
I have other fuji lenses that I like even more, but this one comes in my bag every single time.
How do you fix the distortion or the barreling in post processing? I’m sorry I’m a newbie here and thank you
How does this lens perform when taking portrait photos? Is it much better than the xf 18-55mm for portrait?
Hi. Will this lens greatly improve the image quality? I have the fuji XT200 with the 15-45 kit lens. Will the fuji 35 mm be a great upgrade? Thanks!
Hi Chris, great review! I just bought this lens last week as I’m selling all my zooms to go for fujicrons.
As always: Excellent review. Thank you so much 🙏
Out of all the "Fujichrons" this 35mm is by far my favorite, even with its flaws. It's zippy AF, diminutive size and wonderful build quality and IQ just make it such an incredible all-rounder and a lens consistently glued onto my X-Pro3. It may not have the character of the 35mm f1.4 or the flawless optics of the 33mm, but it never fails to exceed expectations whenever I look back and review the images it takes. If you're shooting at wider views, you'll want to use F4 and higher anyways, so sharpness is not so much an issue (unless you're shooting in low light). It's just so versatile and such a joy to use.
This is really a must-have for any Fuji shooter!
I just watch these videos to relax. You have a voice of an angel sir
@Danny Deluxe really
How do I fit a 49mm filter on the 43mm thread size of this lens? I'm trying to find good step up rings but don't know what to look for.
literally just search for 43-49mm step up ring and get the cheapest you can find. Theyre all the same. I have never come across a "bad" step up ring. Its a tiny ring of metal that costs a couple of cents to manufacture, all these photo companies charging $30+ for them are full of it. I use $2 ones for all of my lenses (so i can have one set of nice filters that works on everything) and have never had an issue.
@@BranVP Hey thanks for clarifying I really appreciate it! I'm new to photography so I didn't really understand how it all works. I've ordered a set of cheap step up rings for a new 35mm lens I just ordered. Hopefully the filter was worth all this trouble lmao.
Thanks mate, been waiting for this :-)
Thanks for the review! I'm excited that you are reviewing Fuji and Nikon at last. I look forward to a review of the Viltrox 23/33/56 set recently released/coming soon.
Side note: people complain about Fuji's larger lenses and bodies. I adopted Fuji not for the compact size, but for the functionality and value for a hybrid video creator and wedding photographer like myself. Not everyone wants the smallest gear possible. On my X-H1 (discontinued in preparation for the X-T4) the 35/2 was too small to feel balanced, and I found myself using the 18-55/4 a lot more.
Exactly this, not everyone is a "vlogger" or "street photographer"
I own this lens. For the build quality and weight it was superb (lens hood was plastic fantastic though). I’m impressed with the image output that it can delivered with my x-t30. Definitely a must have lens if you are a run and gun shooter (street photographer). I’m also eyeing for Viltrox 85mm for my next lens.
Brilliant review and yes Fuji lenses and there lens hoods is always a fun one ^^
When I went on vacation, this lens produced my favorite pictures
My good man.....your channel is the standard when it comes to lens reviews. Great review as I'm considering a choice between the 35 1.4 and this.
Thank you once again
Great video! Would love to see a video on the 10-24 from Fujifilm :)
Love shooting with this lens. I'm not much of a pixel-peeper, so I have 0 complaints and find it a pleasure to use as a general-purpose "standard" lens.
Used this extensively in the rain when I couldn't use my 18-55. Plus I really enjoy the night time performance for street photography
Thanks for sharing.
I hope you review the new viltrox lenses sometime soon. The 33mm f1.4 and 23mm f1.4 are already out in the hands of some reviewers.
I'm checking one out now :-)
@@christopherfrost awesome!
Excellent video 😊!
I have this lens for my X-Pro1 and it's fantastic. One of the best lenses I own.
RE lens hood, you can buy a Haoge LH-X35 square metal hood which fits to the bayonet mount rather than screwing on and looks much better too!
Hi. Will this lens greatly improve the image quality? I have the fuji XT200 with the 15-45 kit lens. Will the fuji 35 mm be a great upgrade? Thanks!
Literally shopping for one and finally you post a review of this lens 🙌🏽
I just bought a 35mmf2 to use with my xt20. I can't control my aperture using the front dial. Not quite sure if I am doing something wrong since I used vintage lenses for a year now. Any suggestions that I should check?
Nice review!
I have 8 fujinon lenses. 4 zooms snd 4 primes. Recently I noticed, that 35/2 is the most used lens among my "system". It's very light, small and razorsharp from the f2 in the center of the image. AF is fast and acurate. 9 pics from 10 are in focus. I do not care much about edges, because "niftyfiftty" lenses are mainly for portraits, so the picture edges are not important at all. Overoll, I'm very happy with this tiny "egg" lens. Initially, I wanted to buy the older one - 35/1.4. But in the store I compared them both on my XT3 body, and understood that f2 version is my choice. There is 32/1.8 Zeiss Touit lens, but fujinon 35/2 is better. Recently Viltrox ctrated their 33/1.4 lens which seems to be good option. I hope that in the nearest future Sigma will adapt their 30/1.4 Art lense to the X-mount. Anyway, 35/2 fujinon lens is a great "working tool" for the enthusiast photographers like me.
Hey. I am a huge fan of this channel! I think i might have watched all your videos on FUji lenses at least 10 times each. It would be really cool if you could compare this lens to the sigma 30mm as in real life, price wise i believe they are competitors, even if the the sigma is much brighter. Cheers
Great review as always Chris! Does anyone know whether using the weather sealed xf 35mm f2 on an XT20, which is not weather sealed, would help prevent sensor condensation when moving from cold to warm places? Would it have any advantage over the non-sealed xc 35mm f2 one?
These f/2 are really nice for traveling if you like to shoot primes. You can put the 16 f/2.8, 35 f/2, and 50 f/2 in your jacket pocket and just take pictures all day long, or use a little fanny pack for your extra lenses. Weather sealing is good and they're just tiny, stealthy, and sharp.
which one you pick for travelling 16 f/2.8 or 35 f/2? I deciding to buy either 1. I had 35 f/1.4 sold it bcos it's a zoom lens and not a good one for travelling.
@@estherhenderika9098 The 35 f/1.4 isn't a zoom, it's a prime lens. I really loved the 35 f/2. Probably my most used lens. Small, light, fast focus, and great images.
@@matthewwells1606 I meant it gets too close to the object. I might get the 35 f/2 instead of 16 f/2.8, hopefully that's the best for travel. Thanks for your input
@@matthewwells1606 35 mm f2 will Be good for video?
Chris, what camera system do you use for your personal/family photography?
Hi! I keep feeling my lens making a noise from inside, like the aperture system is shaking sometimes, I can also see the aperture frame opening and closing and I can see it in my screen when it does that shaking. Is this normal?
Cool video. Do i have to adjust aperture with the ring or will this still be possible on camera body settings? Thx
Great Review, thks
Thanks for the review, at what distance is your test chart?
I hope Viltrox will send you the new X mount 33mm f/1.4 lens to review.. you're the only reviewer on youtube I trust haha
I have heard very good things about the new Viltrox 33m. I tested the 85mm out, and it was mind blowing.
As a Fuji X owner, thanks for the review Chris.
The Fuji X line of cameras have been praised, in part, as they have a wide range of of quality native glass.
Was not sure if you were criticising this lens, or damming it with faint praise?
Hi Christopher, just wanted to say a big thank you for the excellent lens reviews. I recently moved from full frame Nikon DSLRs to Fuji and your reviews have been invaluable in helping me choose my lenses.
After much watching, I went for this 35mm f/2 WR and the 50mm f/2 WR. And they are both phenomenal! Thanks so much again - your efforts are greatly appreciated.
My camera comes with the 16-80 F4 R OIS WR lens. Would this be the lens I should get next? I am new and still trying to understand the lenses, etc
03:05 to 03:26, i've noticed that the dark tones move from a cool "blue" black (at f2, f2.8) to a warmer or neutral black (at f11). Haven't noticed it on the newer and more precise FJ lenses, like the 33mm f1.4, which is very consistent. Seems that this 35mm f2 rendering changes dark tones as you close down the aparture.
Hi Christopher, my Fuji 35mm F2 center focus is bit soft. I end up having to post sharpen. Maybe have a bad copy or did u experience similar ?
Awesome as usual Christ.
Are you planning to do Olympus M.Zuiko Lens? Their tiny primes are a joy to use.
One day in the future, maybe
Your channel is the best, Christopher. I would love to come to your Church some day
Very nice review! Can you pls make a review on their new fujinon 33 1.4 WR? thank you!
You sure reviewed the living daylights out of that one! :-)

Brilliant lens! Superb sharpness and rendition. But all Fuji lenses are good or superb.
GREAT LENS
35mm f1.4 is still a winner for me despite its flaws
Thanks for the review Chris!
When stopped down for landscapes, which has better image quality when considering the distortion and vignetting between both the XF 35 f1.4 and XF 35 f2? I believe the 1.4 is optically corrected and doesn't rely on lens corrections?
If you're stopped down to f/5.6 or so then they'll essentially look as good as each other
I like the 35mm on APSC cameras, it's a nice focal length
There is clearly a bayonet mount for a lens hood on both this and the XC version that is strangely missing (bayonet mounted lens hood that is) from the XF version and not easily found for either version. I much prefer a plastic bayonet mount for lens protection instead of a screw in direct in front front element.
Can you review the 35mm 1.2R
I don't shoot Fuji, but came for the lovely shots of Welsh beaches. Was not disappointed :)
is this lens compatible with fuji XT 100 ??
If I had to choose between Fuji 18-55 and 35 mm f 2, what would be the best choice for landscape photography?
I'd prefer the 35mm. Surely its not quite wide enough (sometimes 35mm is too tight on apsc), but it has the weather sealing and very solid build, which is pretty reassuring when used in harsh places like mountain, beach, waterfall, or when shooting under the rain.
Thank you for the review! Would you mind reviewing the xf 10-24mm? I need to see if I will be using Fuji or Canon (their 11-22 is VERY sharp) on my next trip for landscapes!
My autofocus and aperture settings not working on xt30 ii
Hi. Will this lens greatly improve the image quality? I have the fuji XT200 with the 15-45 kit lens. Will the fuji 35 mm be a great upgrade? Thanks!
YES.
can i use this with xt4?
I'm comparing these softness tests images with those of the XF 16-80 (at 23mm and 50mm), which at the same apertures seems better than this one, is it possible? In this case the only advantage of the prime would be in low light situations.
You must be confused somewhere - this lens is a little sharper than the 16-80 at the same apertures
It is a solid little lens. I bought it mainly for its weather sealing. As I have no other WR lenses for my Fuji cameras. I shoot mostly vintage glass. A solid performer, but as you state- Nothing particularly mind blowing about it. It's my go to lens for rainy weather, in any case. I like the size and weight.
which vintage lens do you like best please ?
@@flashboyd200 I own a bunch of them. Some that stand out as great- Zeiss Jena Tessar, Jupiter series(Soviet), Meyer Optik. Helios is a really fun and artistic lens. SMC Takumars are also insane.
@@flashboyd200 i also vouch for Helios, get yourself a good, not very damaged copy for 20-30 EUR and you'll love it.
Also Minoltas, the 50mm f1.4 & f1.7 are very good
My favourite Fuji prime lens. It's ideal for street photography: light, compact, sharp, weather resistant, robust and a good focal length. It comes highly recommended.
Is it good for video?
Fuji 10-24 please!
Recently got into photography and I see this scale at 3:00 in many lens reviews. I can tell it tests the lens quality but what exactly is it called?
It's a test chart for photography. There are many examples of such charts.
Great lenses reviews!!!!! Before I purchase a lens I used to watch your analysis of the lenses to be sure that I make the Wright decision... I would like you to make the review of the Fuji 16mm f1.4 and the Fuji14mm f2.8 if you can!!! Which one of them would you recommend the 35mm f1.4 or the f2 as the first purchase?
Give the new XC 35mm f/2 version a try if you're on a lower budget :-)
Christopher Frost Photography I rather pick the XF35f2 before the XC... I found that Fuji with all this trend of vintage lenses over charge withe a price that does not correspond with the quality that they Ofer . When I was in Canon a “L” lens was worth the price but in this case ,if I want the 23f2 for example, the price is ok but the quality is too different of the f1.4 or is not as fast as the nicest primes. I am interested in the 10-24f4 but I’m not going to pay that much money for an F4 but they if you want the faster version of this one is the double. This is what don’t like with this system. Olympus,at list gives you the chance with a F1.8 a reasonable price
Hi Chris, would you consider reviewing the new Tokina 11-16 f2.8 CF lens? I have the older one with the screw driver motor. I would be interested to see how the new one compares.
I heard it has superior image quality and the distortion is also reduced, although it is said to suffer from flaring.
I'll try to - I have a huge pile of other lenses to test here at the moment first, though
@@christopherfrost sure, I cannot wait as a Nikon user. ;) I noticed that your patronage has increased by 40$ since you presented the z7. I joined too. I hope you will soon have to prepare that music video you tease there. :)

Would love it when your review for the new Viltrox 33mm f1.4 for fuji comes out.
Also I have a suggestion, when you talk about bokeh, you could include a portrait picture so that we get a sense of the lense's bokeh while taking portraits.. :)
When you say that this lens will not focus close up at f2, do you mean when you are using autofocus? I have tried using manual focus at this setting and although it was quite hard work holding the camera steady, it seemed to work.
The close up shots you see in this review are taken in manual focus mode
Christopher Frost Photography Well it was quite hard work!
@@sallydon3723 The lens should focus just as closely in autofocus mode (although some lenses do require you to switch to manual focus to get to their very closest distance)
Christopher Frost Photography Is it anything to do with the narrow depth of field at f2? - no, you mean that nothing is in focus
Do you have a website?
I had this lens back in 2017 with X-t10, this lens really blows 16mp sensor out of the water.
I've been a fuji user for years now (XT1, XT2, XT3, XH1, XPRO1, XPRO2) and have used every prime in the real world, but after years of waiting for more from the lens line up I'm switching to Canon latest mirrorless offerings when released. The RF 28-70 which you reviewed has been blowing me away and that alone is making me switch systems.
Canon quality is not in dispute but man, these cameras made for different situations. RF 28-70 weighs 1.5 kilogram. I would rather loose some details in picture rather than skip taking a picture because heavy camera system can't always be around when you need it.
Great video. Now what do think about the Fuji xf 23 f2? This lens seems to have more issues comparing up the 23 f2?
I have one, use it very little. Walking around I prefer the 18-55.
my 35 f2 even is less sharp than 18-55 (at the center)
I haaaaate the Lens hood on the 23mm F2 XF. The cap won't fit through like on this one so you have to either put the cap on and then screw the hood to store it, (but then you cannot quickly take out the cap to use it) or put the cap over the hood , which makes the lens a bit longer and less "pocketable"
When I walk around with the 23 2.0 on a body, I don't have the cap on.
This stays on my camera 24/7 unless I'm doing something specific. Can't go wrong with this one that is unless you lose the lens hood. A fuji brand replacement one costs 56 bloody quid!
Haha, the kinder egg comment - gold! 😁👍
Do viltrox 33mm f1.4 for fuji next.
Mr. Frost, how well does the Fuji lineup of lenses hold up to Sony and Canon? I'm wondering which system would be better to buy into. I don't have that deep of a wallet so I have about $4000 to spend on one system (camera, lenses, batteries).
My choices are the Canon EOS RP, the Sony A7III, and the Fuji XT-4.
Wonderful video and God bless.
The Fujinon Lenses are the main reason for most of the people getting a Fujifilm Camera.
Not the cheapest ones, but the Sony ones aren't either.
@@OxKing that makes sense. I am looking at the Tamron ones for the Sony mount because they actually match or are lower in price than the Fuji ones, which interests me. Any experience with those?
The point is: for which purpose?? Every system or brand has it's pros and cons. All of these you mentioned are more than good enough for hobby. You should focus on your needs to find which one is better for you. Fullframes has better IQ and overall specs, but they are larger and expensive and full of plastics materials. Fuji offers slightly worst IQ (due to smaller sensor) but more compact bodies and lenses, also cheaper than FF, and an excelent build quality full of metallic materials as well. Also with this old school feeling with their manual knobs. I personally love that chunky metallic feeling in my hands, it's a real pleasure to use Fuji gear. But if you're fully committed to IQ and don't mind that much about size, weight and "feeling", then I would suggest you to go for a FF.
@@EduBroncano I've recently been hearing about a Sony sensor dust issue where their cameras don't have good enough ultrasonic cleaners so dust can stick to the sensor easier. Is this true? I've only heard about this when it comes to Sony and Nikon mirrorless.
@@Alexrocks1253 I've heard about that issue with Sony cameras. But there're tons of professional photographers using Sony for landscapes or sports, facing very dusty scenarios. Again it's more about personal taste and purpose in my opinion. I can't see big differences between Sony and Canon overall other than the ergonomics and personal preference.
Can this be adapted to fit on a Sony crop sensor? Sony a6400.
No
WRT corners - field curvature, maybe? BTW was that Gower at the end of the video?
Not the Gower - the Ceredigion coastal path
@@christopherfrost Cheers, there are so many nice places along the coast. I probably stopped there on my way to Snowdonia hence the (supposed) familiarity.
Soon as I can, this is on my bucket list, will I need the 23mm f2 as well? What about the F16.
buy the viltox 23mm f1.4 its awesome
@@keepitreal3363 I haven't seen that lens for sale yet even on the Viltrox site, and I've been waiting. Where did you get yours?
@@StuEddins I've only seen a few reviews of it yet which they say the lens is great! and i havnt seen it on sale here in the uk yet but im sure its available in the usa.
This rings very true of most Fuji lenses I've owned - i.e. they ask a bit too much money for a lens that presents some notable flaws under closer inspection, which ultimately wrecks any notion of value for money. I suspect they hope that the retro aesthetics will make up for the shortcomings, but I think that's rather a lazy tact. Personally, I'm quite excited to see the forthcoming Tokina/Viltrox primes for X mount - hopefully they'll serve as a swift kick in the pants to Fuji's pricing team.
Sharpness, sharpness, sharpness.. That`s all I hear about modern lenses, is it sharp? More to a lens than sharpness. A great lens has character and rendering. I use the X-H1 but only have 1 modern Fuji lens, that being the 18-55. The rest of my lenses are all vintage manual focus. Some are as sharp as modern lenses and some are not. But the thing that they all have is character. And bokeh, amazing bokeh like with the Pentacon 50 F1.8 or the Helios 44 series 58mm F2 and, of course, the vintage Pentax lenses. I have one vintage Fuji lens, that being the 35mm F2.8 which I am hoping will arrive soon. Looking forward to putting it on the cam to see what it can do. The old Fuji EBC lenses were excellent and entirely overlooked by most. The new lenses are, for lack of a better term, clinical, sharp and cold. Give me a great vintage lens with character any day.
I talk about all kinds of things other than sharpness in this review...
@@christopherfrost Wasn't ditected totally at you Chris. Was a general statement on the state of what people believe as far as lenses are concerned.
The Pentacon 135mm 2.8 with 15 blades...

This is a great lens but I did sell it and buy the 35mm 1.4, which is now my favourite lens of all time, so no regrets!
My Fuji 23mm f2 isnt sharp at extreme close ups but when do we use a 23mm f2 for extreme close ups anyway? Except for tests of course.
I did when I was taking photos of my daughter. Hated all the unsharp photos. Sold the 23 f2.
I got it stuck on my Xt1. Same impressions of yours. The image quality of the 27 f2,8 is way better but I dig the 35 'cause it's generally a good and tiny lens, and I like its versatility and focal length (old dinosaurs like me are prone to good old days 50mm eqs) . Its also nice for portraits. I shoot a lot of B&W thus I' m not concerned by the fringing, but pixel peeping it is surely a little issue. Thanx Chris, like your reviews a lot.

Some of my Fuji lenses are so sharp the images do not even look real. Since Fuji adds software sharpening in their camera firmware/software. But it can be turned up or down as a menu option.
