    Cars running strictly on software are a pain in the ass. My friends and I rented a some 2023 Nissan SUV on a hunting trip and took it down the wrong road at 3am and wanted to back up, but it wouldn’t let us reverse on a slope because it was too “steep”. We didn’t have a choice but to drive down the entire road and turn around. What the hell - I should at least have an option to reverse.

People should stick and write complaints about things like that. If BMW backed out of their heated seats subscription idea, then it can be done. And that's stupid compared to not being able to reverse when you need to.

      My uncle and I live and work together, and we carpool in his car b/c it has way better mileage than my SUV. My SUV is pretty basic without many features (and I like it that way), so when I drove his car for the first time, i found out about his auto brakes. This driver ahead of me was turning right into a parking lot. I had more than enough space to where I only needed to let off the accelerator and wouldn’t need to brake before they completed their turn. Well as it turns out, if you don’t give them at least a 100 yard buffer zone to complete their turn, the car slams on the brakes really damn hard until they are fully out of the way. Incredibly terrifying when it’s rush hour traffic, and the nearest car behind you may or may not notice in time

    ironically the cybertruck being bulletproof actually makes it more dangerous. Not just because cars are designed to crumple to absorb the impact but also because If you were to get in an accident that made you unable to open the doors, stronger doors and stronger windows means they're harder to break to get you out of the car.

      I can pretty safely say that it still doesn't work. I've been blinded multiple times by new SUVs either behind me or oncoming. The headlights are too slow to adapt and still flash you just enough to blind you for a moment or when they're behind you, the lights do go around your car, but don't account for your mirrors so now you just have a deathray coming from both sides. Or if they decide to tailgate you the lights just kinda forget there is a car in front of them and go full blast and you might as well pull over to let them pass because you're not seeing anything.
      I love my car, it has amazing visibility, but that combined with the low seating position is terrible when you encounter one of those immense BMWs with lights higher than your mirrors. I don't really get it; trucks, buses, vans and other large vehicles managed to figure out how to have non-blinding lights just fine, why do SUVs need them positioned so high?

And Americans drive like they're going to kill you - people are allowed to have Cybertrucks for gods sake (they are illegal nearly everywhere else). Cars already kill people, I don't know why people are so keen on making them even more dangerous.
      Public transportation is just objectively better; better for the environment, less expensive, and you don't have to know how to drive it! And a country as wealthy and powerful as the U.S. should (and could EASILY) have that infrastructure. Just look at the rest of the world (Europe and East Asia in particular). They care more about actual convenience, efficiency and evolution of technology than just money, big corporations, and seemingly luxury status symbols like having a huge nonfunctional iPad in your car.

    I am A Mechanic... I am so tired of people pretending old cars are better... that is called survivorship bias. all you see are that old cars are more common because thats what people have and you assume that they must be better at lasting, or work better or be less complicated.Secret is they arent and they never really were overall.
    Cars were always like this. instead of electronic complexity they had mechanical complexity or they had worse handling or they let you die in a crash instead of crunching to absorb the impact. yeah every once in a while these changes do not stick like the self fastening belt or the stupid alternative shifters, but overall they get better. not that that makes my life easier. tolerances get tighter and honestly the average person proves again and again that they cant handle faster lighter cars. but the cars are not the problem any more than they have ever been and im tired of people who dont work on them and dont understand them saying it.(Btw the reason for the unification of the controls is so that there are fewer complex systems to break,the more unified and simplified the controls are the more reliable the should be. if every car has every control on a muxer control circuit or its own switch it gets ugly, so in most cars its an even trade.)
    as far as the trucks they should actually require a special license for larger vehicles to prevent this as one persons confidence problem should not be another persons safety problem
    (Btw tesla is not a car company) its a company that sells stock in the "future of vehicles " that happens to manufacture cars. its driven by a cult of personality and is hiding ungodly numbers of defects and is basically the cryptocurrency of the automarket.
    not that electrics are bad but this is a cult and should be shut down, because when level heads are not in charge of the company, all the cars are dangerous.

      That's pretty crude reasoning. You would have to actually create some metric for comparison other than your general feelings. Cars have an average lifespan and mileage and cars that exceed that are above average, simple as that. Your dollar used to buy you more miles in a car than it these days which makes old cars better on average. GM was producing engines that could go 300,000 miles in 1995 and selling them for 10,000$

    • @ryanfitzgerald9833

      @@Jmoneysmoothboy could is a very interesting way to put that. Timing belts snap at 100,000 timing chains sometimes twice that sometimes less. Cam gears fail, head gaskets fail, water pumps infamously in GM's case fail. Most engines never live up to their potential lifespan, not without help. And to be quite honest with a rebuild or an overhaul engines can generally last pretty long. Far beyond their life expectancy anyway. It's not a deal-breaker. By the way, in the '90s gm was also putting out the Northstar V8. Engines were made out of the same stupid aluminum back then they were still Port injected. They were still computer controlled in many cases though. Worse controlled usually. I don't know what you think they did to magically make them better than they are now but I'm going to tell you straight up. The differences are less than you think, or at least less than you seem to. Overall anyway. One thing I will say is that I wouldn't trust a used turbocharged engine as far as I can throw it. But for NA nah they're not that different. also average lifespan really? You going to talk about average lifespan of things that haven't lived to it yet? That's a metric of hindsight. You can only tell an engine's average lifespan overall once most of them are gone. So it's not a way to compare new and old engines.

    About the headlights: also, people don’t seem to know how to properly adjust their lights so that they actually hit the road and not other cars. When you have more weight in the back of the car (passengers, if you usually don’t have any), you need to adjust them because the back is now slightly lower than usual in order to not shine your lights into someone else’s eyes.

      @noah1535 Pƙed 4 dny +165

      @faithchuene1897 government regulations (US at least) require a vehicle to meet a minimum fuel efficiency based on size. For some types of vehicles it would be too expensive to meet them easily. Car companies do want to make money after all. Most notable is pickup trucks. More modern pickups are so big at the fault of regulations because a small pickup, say a Ford Ranger for example, would need to meet requirements of like 50mpg, but the newer large F150 (to stay with a Ford example) only needs like 30mpg. A whole lot easier of a target. In general the regulations have very strict and aggressive standards for small vehicles and much less strict requirements for larger vehicles, so it's easier and therefore more profitable to make a larger vehicle.
      It's called CAFE regulations if you're interested, standing for Corporate Average Fuel Economy

      @@faithchuene1897 Basically, the American government agency in charge of what amount of miles per gallon is acceptable bases it on vehicle size. This sounds good on paper, some people genuinely need bigger vehicles (Although they're a very, very small minority), in practice, these numbers are way off, so companies can't sell something like a 35 MPG small hatchback because "It's inefficient", so they choose to make a 20 MPG truck/SUV, because due to their size they have lower MPG requirement

      @bluespidergaming7719 Pƙed 4 dny +19

      @faithchuene1897 the reason C.A.F.E standards exist is because before them American car manufacturers got lazy and complacent and instead of introducing new tech within cars or creating new more fuel efficient engines the big 3 GM,Ford, and Chrystler decided that every car need a huge v8 just to go down the road (they didnt) and so you got situations where grandma would have a 454 big block in her station wagon for no other reason than they refused or even were too incompetent to create better engines the big 3 seemed allergic to actually creating fuel efficient small cars either re badging euro cars or creating something like the Ford pinto and the truck part of the regulation was paid for by car industries to truck wouldnt have to follow the same standards
