Here's an observation from an old guy. That nude beach sketch where they keep saying 'penis'? The joke behind it is that it had just recently become okay to use the word 'penis' on TV so they were going to get as much mileage out of it as possible.

The show sucks ...Who are we kidding ?
For the past decade , “SNL” has attempted to make up for the god-awful writing by bringing in celebrities to play recurring “characters” . But even THIS strategy has failed .
What’s so funny about seeing Jim Carrey doing an impression of Jim Carrey doing Joe Biden ?
What’s so funny about seeing Alec Baldwin doing an impression of Alec Baldwin doing Donald Trump ?
I’m old enough to remember when SNL used to cast literal sketch comedians in their sketches !
Seriously though , how many times must we be subjected to a sketch where they just tell the same joke OVER AND OVER again and call that a full sketch ?
The same joke is repeated until the sketch ends ...
Another tactic of the god- awful writers is to pack each sketch with the most amount of jokes possible , which oftentimes , does not allow for the satisfaction of waiting for that one perfectly timed joke or punchline .
And the present cast members suffer from some of the worst comedic timing during their sketches .
And don’t get me started on the incessant awkward pauses and clear signs the celebrity guest stars are reading cue cards.
And these SNL writers try SO HARD to force sketches about current events ...ugh 🤢
These writers need reminding that the best and most iconic SNL sketches of all time , were ones which were just funny , without any relation to what’s going on in the world .
People will remember the great sketches with good writing and good acting far longer than a bad sketch that was relevant at the time and had a celebrity in it , for the sake of having a celebrity in it.
      SNL sucks !

bill hader wasn't mentioned a lot in this video, and I just wanna point out something I've noticed about his comedic style that sets him apart. and I think this is why a lot of people consider him to be one of the best cast members of the last fifteen or so years.
his impressions are transformative. most SNL impressions of movie characters, celebrities, etc, are just filler lines up until they Say The Funny Catchphrase. and most of these sketches fall flat (a lot of celebrity jeopardy sketches do this). but when Bill does his take on an existing character, he adapts the character to something like a new setting or time period, and transforms what could be a throwaway skit into something memorable.
and sure, he's very repetitive. but he doesn't do the EXACT same thing in every sketch like some SNL actors do. with the exception of specific characters he plays, such as Stefan, he doesn't really have a single trait that he's remembered for. sometimes he's really loud and facially expressive, aggressive, homoerotic, even homosexual, but sometimes he doesn't say a single word, and he's probably funny regardless of what he's doing. he's adaptable. he isn't just a loud funny man, he adapts to what the skit/character needs him to do. and that's still apparent today, as he has found success in the show Barry, among other projects.

I also feel like the "SNL was funnier in my day" comes from how TV used to be watched. When I was a teenager I would stay up late and watch with my sisters. On more then one occasion we wouldn't laugh during the episode but then talk about the skit so much that it became funnier in hindsight because it became an inside joke with my sisters. Also there was less content out in the world so it was more likely my friends where watching SNL. If I missed that weeks episodes, I couldn't always find them on CZcams, I would just be out of the joke that week. My point is SNL was funnier when my friends and family watched SNL because sharing a joke with someone is funnier than laughing and a screen alone in your bedroom.

Not even close. It has to do with talent and writing. SNL has always had ups and downs. Its first few years were great. In the 80s, the show sucked for awhile after numerous big names moved on. It had a resurgence in the 90s, went downhill in the early 2000s, got better in the mid 2000s, and ever since 2013 or so has went from mediocre to borderline unwatchable. The new cast sucks and the writing is so cringey and politically charged....and very partisan.
SNLs comedy used to appeal to everyone. Now, it only apoeals to a select people.

Just a quick note on Charles Rocket and why NBC tried to make him the next big star of SNL.
Rocket worked as a serious news anchor for a few NBC stations across the country, and had produced a series of comedic short films where he played a reporter who asked random people on the street weird questions (similar to Billy Eichner’s bit 40 years later). These shorts were popular in the underground comedy scene of the late 1970s, and his experience as an anchor made hiring him to do Weekend Update seem like a perfect fit.
After he got the gig, it went to his head. He felt that he had made it just be being on SNL, and didn’t need to try as hard. Hell, most of the people hired for season 5 thought the same thing as Rocket. He immediately began feuding with Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo because they dared to actually try and put effort into their sketches.
Rocket was fired after dropping the f-bomb on live television, along with everyone else except Murphy and Piscopo.

No one knew at the time who would go on to do brilliant things. Every season is hit or miss, nothing was perfect, there were no perfect casts (but I will say the hader, Wiig, armisen, sudekis et all in that 8-10 years era to me is the best)

People need to realize that SNL is a creative incubator. It's about giving this cast the opportunity to have a TON of shots at bat and grow their comedic taste, timing, and temperament so that they can learn to sift through the shitty stuff and find the gold. And we as the audience might not benefit from each episode individually, but we benefit from the collective. This was such an awesome video, Drew - thanks for showing us that great comedy is a practice - not a product.
