I like how you can tell how genuinely pissed Drew was about some of the products here, in comparison to his other videos. Like sure, a product that turns all liquids into slushes in pretty dumb and useless. But the worst that can do is lose someone $25, not that big of a deal at the end of the day. On the other hand, a product so ridiculously expensive that's supposed to help with mental health but actively makes mental health worse, that's on a whole other level of scummy.
And even the useless products he buys in other videos (if they actually ship) often actually do what is advertised. The Work Oneie sucked and was very uncomfortable, but it was a onesie with a business shirt that “had a flap on the back”. The products in this video just helps solidify my lack of faith in humanity

The slushee cup is not a human right and it’s my choice to want one so bad to make that specific consistency of ice
“sometimes my brain forgets that we’re supposed to be on the same team” what a great way of describing anxiety I appreciate this. what a mood.
It is a really good descriptor, especially because attacks can come out of nowhere, and you're just looking around for a source, like are we being attacked?? No. My body just thinks it is and is going to feel that way for an unknown amount of time.
"Anxiety isn't real because I don't have it, and I'm the main character!" is also a great way of describing how other people treat it.

On a serious note, I really appreciate how open Drew is about his mental health. As someone who also struggles with anxiety it's refreshing to see a "public figure" of sorts talk about his own.
Exactly the way I felt when he explained how he’s had to go to the ER and stuff too makes me feel so much more heard and not alone as a person.
yeah I feel that way too. My anxiety has been really bad lately and its comforting to see someone I look up to talk about it

@Khloe McGregor yeah, I've been made to feel stupid for needing to go to the ER but this makes me feel less alone
I was just about to comment the same thing! It’s so great to have bigger creators talking openly about things like anxiety.
I’m very late to this- but incase somebody actually DID want a list of mental health products that help - I gotcha; (also I’m obviously not sponsored, just somebody who knows how difficult it can be to find help without the ability to access therapy) it’s kinda interesting how a lot of the items that I’ve found helpful don’t have the same ‘pretty app’ and sleek design that these so called mental health focused products do. But most of all know that however you’re feeling now, it will pass ❤ here’s my list of ACTUALLY helpful products to try out!
- electric toothbrush, for those days you have no energy to brush your teeth. You can keep it beside your bed with a cup of water for the days you cannot get out of bed.
- dry shampoo, whatever scent you like ^^ same principle as above. As weird as it sounds, baby shampoo is great if you go along time without washing your hair bc showers feel like a huge task. Baby shampoo is clarifying and it’s usually not scented and expensive - and it’s real cheap too!
- a tens machine or massager. Sometimes emotions can get embedded in your muscles and cause tension. Sometimes, being able to have a massage can force your body out of anxiety mode and help you feel better.
- non minty toothpaste for my sensory troubled friends. Sometimes mint can be overpowering and make even the most basic of self care feel like a gargantuan task. I got myself a strawberry flavoured one 🍓
- a weighted blanket, esp for those with insomnia. They can be a bit pricey and washing them is a pain in the ass, but you can find some smaller cheap ones that can help you get out of anxiety mode and relax.
- a journal or diary, paper or just the notes app on your phone. It’s good to get thoughts out of your head and on paper sometimes, it helps to process things like that.
- a gigantic jug of water, or a crate of bottled water. Just have it beside your bed. Sometimes it feels like hell to just move your arm over, so make it easy on yourself
Take care of yourselves out there!
Also, if you have trouble writing, a little voice recorder can be nice too! I think faster than my hands can write and forget a lot of my sentences, so having a little audio recorder is nice.
Youre awesome. Thank you very much.
Intrestingly, the minty feel of toothpaste actually really helps me. I adore mint and it makes my mouth and teeth feel so clean and smooth, so it made my experience more pleasant than unpleasant. As long as I focused on the flavor, I would forget how tired and sort of 'annoyed' almost I felt from brushing my teeth
I love this comment. Genuinely good and kind advice. Be good maxcheese x
Also the lamp for seasonal depression! It has proven benefits if used regularly/correctly.
I went to ER for having a panic attack this weekend. I thought I was having a heart attack or something. I feel so dumb when they said my heart was fine. That was validating to hear.
Same here.
You’re definitely not alone, many people have also done that same thing and it’s probably best that you went just to reassure you and make sure you’re healthy!
Really hope everyone here is doing well
I think lots of people who have never experienced them think it's "just" a panic attack, but when you actually have one you can genuinely think you're dying. Like, crushing chest pain, sense of doom, can't catch your breath, trying not to vomit cos you think you'll choke on it, scared to stand up in case you pass out. You genuinely think you're having a heart attack & dying and can't stop it, and it is entirely sensible to go to the hospital to get checked out.

There’s a concept with Bipolar Disorder where people spend egregious amounts of money on things which releases norepinephrine in their brain and I genuinely think these are feeding off of that positive feeling when you make a big purchase
Yep! It’s true but it’s not just bipolar disorder it even goes for severe depression. I tend to buy food and toys (both things are comforts to me so it makes sense) and spend quite a bit of money. Tho once I get out of my spending episode I break down badly out of guilt for spending so much. Then again I go through manic episodes as well which sometimes cross over but not much. We love being severely broken haha
There's something similar with bpd as well
I have ADHD and there is a similar thing with adhd as well, but more so with dopamine than norepinephine. It's one of the reasons why disorders like bipolar disorder, bpd, adhd, depression, anxiety, and likely others can be so hard to differentiate, because a lot of them have traits and symptoms that appear quite similar, especially with only a surface level understanding of those symptoms.
Hypomanic episodes in people with Bipolar Disorder can seem extremely similar to Hyperactive or Combined type ADHD, especially when you consider that a lot of people with ADHD also develop depression, which has highs and lows. Many of those disorders can also induce mood swings, and hightened emotional sensitivity, which is how it often overlaps with BPD.
Mental health is very complicated, and as someone with mental health issues, I know how much most of us wish we could just buy a magic product to fix it. People with mental health issues that are desperate for some sort of way to ease their pain are especially vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, which is why products like these are so scummy.

my parents recently got divorced and for a while my dad was having a hard time dealing with all of it and, as a result, was having a really hard time sleeping. one of his attempts to deal with this problem was buying this weird bracelet device that supposedly admitted some type of frequency that "helped with insomnia." and seeing that package and listening to him optimistically describe what it was made me so, so profoundly sad. he's not a very gullible dude, he was an engineer and a math teacher, he's pretty logically-minded but he just really, really wanted some peaceful, relieving sleep. these companies are blatantly predatory and their targets are people who are just desperately searching for relief. it's incredibly cruel and I hope with my entire heart that some of the people who buys these things in the hopes of feeling less bad, at the very least, experience some kind of placebo effect.

@@LiveLaughLotad wow, what a genuinely shitty thing to try to rub in someone's face to "win" a CZcams comment. Maybe you should talk to your therapist about your lack of empathy for someone who is struggling with something you're privileged enough *not* to be struggling with. Not a good look, dear.
I love how drew just posts whenever the hell he wants and we're always here ready to listen to him talk about shit we've never heard about or care about. That's star power right there
Yes it's very telling of his ability to entertain
Even though the average person doesn’t know who tf he is
It’s so funny on vine he was weird and niche but on CZcams he’s so much more popular
Fun fact: interoception is WELL KNOWN in the ASD community and it's something some of our members struggle with literally every day. Just FYI, it's not nonsense, it's a real problem for a lot of disabled people. Mine is only mildly wonky, so I'm pretty lucky.
You mean I’ve never known of a problem I’ve been having for years?! I feel jipped man.
I keep taking L's I guess because how the HELL did I not know about this WHILE HAVING THIS 😭💀
@@Jerebees-Digital-Spacewell we're trained to think it's an us or me problem, not just our brains having problems with relaying info. Hyperfixated on a thing for too long and now all the status effects hit at once and you're in a real bad mood? You idiot, couldn't you tell you were hungry/thirsty/cold/needed a pee?? Predatory isn’t the word in this case mate
@@jawaela By definition ("seeking to exploit or oppress others") it is actually, these products prey on people who are in vulnerable spots in their lives, they're predatory.
For those curious, interoception is actually a sense, it's basically a fancy word for being able to listen to your body's signals. Knowing that you're tired, hungry, need to go the bathroom. That feeling that you really need to eat a carrot since you've had nothing but pizza all day... Interoception can be poor with certain mental disabilities, but like all these other problems, things like therapy tend to help, go figure
Thank you for commenting this 🤗 I also was like, that’s a real sense!! Same with proprioception (understanding how your body moves and interacts with the world around you).
These products are definitely preying on that though and using it as a buzz word but not understanding it fully :/
Yeah, the 5 senses are only the ones with dedicated external organs. We have dozens of senses, just with more and more niche/hard to explain roles.
Good stuff, never even heard of it but good to know!
no offence intended but that just sounds like redefining/broadening an existing and well defined term.
for example: “i get the sense that person x is being y”
yes, i used the word sense here but that doesn’t mean that my new invention of “intuiception” belongs in the same category as touch/taste/see/smell/hear.
in the same way, knowing that i’m hungry isn’t on par with being able to taste
@@mercluke
having a feeling about something isn't the same as the literal signals your brain sends you when you need to eat or use the restroom. Also, people with autism often have interoception issues. I often don't realize I'm hungry until I have stomach cramps, sometimes I don't notice I need to pee until i'm about to burst.

I think the worst part is that these brands were actively targeting you because you had a break in your mental health. They’re preying on the fact that you need help, and they say they can sell it to you.
I own a drawer of useless shitty stuff like this that I buy because I’d try anything to get some semblance of physical or mental health, and I guess on some level it’s obvious that these companies have been scamming me, but when you’re desperate, you don’t see that, you just see the little glimmer of hope that throwing more money in this sinkhole will make it close up.

I genuinely listen to this video whenever I’m overwhelmed or stressed out (which is frequent) because someone I admire so much like Drew openly talking about anxiety and mocking a new market that capitalizes on people like us makes me feel so much better
the one where drew realizes there should be federal oversight for consumer health products...
Did anyone else notice how smart Drew got by the end of this video? I'm honestly shocked. I was expecting them not to work tbh.
Did you notice that his head and eyes literally embiggened?

Can I just say I'm SOOO glad this didn't lead into a B*tterH*lp ad 😩 Thanks for pointing out the predatory tactics used by these types of companies! It's such a scummy thing because most of us with mental health problems are desperate for solutions and these companies know that :( Great video!
I’m so happy it didn’t. I hope drew’s channel continues to *not* be sponsored by b*tt*rh*lp
What did B*tterH*lp do? Sorry if this comes across as an ignorant question, I just haven't been informed.
Yeah what happened??
@@sarahwilkins9769 b*tterH*elp has been known for hiring basically anyone, no matter how good they are. Meanings lots of people, when they try to express their problems to these online therapists, have had answers such as "that sucks" or other dumb stuff like that. It's really upsetting bc they had such a good opportunity to be great but then suck a lot-
So sad when I watch a content creator I trust is a decent human being then they fcking advertise THAT
insane how one of the biggest youtube channels (pewdiepie) could expose the "service" nearly half a decade ago and still NOBODY'S learned
The placebo effect is incredibly potent. I had to write a research paper about placebo and nocebo effects, and they seem to work A LOT more than we think they do. You should look up studies concerning their efficacy, it's insane. I don't remember the name, but there was a documentary about it too that was interesting. I think it was BBC?
I relate to your panic attacks. It’s hard to keep at it but you’re doing so well drew, appreciate you
The barely-contained anger behind Drew's kindly smile as he discusses the Instagram ads he instantly started being shown...it's quite terrifying honestly.
i agree, i think its the most genuine anger ive ever seen out of drew. you're completely right though, i genuinely got a pretty scared, i'm very impressed and happy about his passion for mental health though :p
It's nice to hear another person talk so openly about anxiety and depression when it was never their goal in the first place. I don't usually come to Drew's videos to feel validated but I'm glad it happened today. Made it a bit easier to get through the day.

As someone currently going through the process of getting diagnosed with ADHD at 26 (who also has anxiety/depression), I really hate these scam products that claim to "increase focus". They're very clearly trying to prey on the recent increase in ADHD/mental health awareness on social media, and it feels REALLY scummy to target a group of people who tend to have issues with stuff like impulse purchasing (and also forgetting to return items within a return window). I haven't been getting too many physical products suggested to me, but I've been seeing a lot of ads for subscription apps "to help ADHD", and from what I can tell they are basically ALL garbage.
Oh god, yes.
I have ADHD and depression and these devices are just terrible - except for the CalmiGo thing. Looks useful.
Focusing on mental health is counterproductive and the entire concept is a marketing tool
Yup. As someone w executive dysfunction, my suggestion would be to check out CZcams videos by folks w executive dysfunction/ADHD and how they structure their life, tips and tricks, etc. I really like the channel How to ADHD. ☺️ Luck on your journey!
I get alot of adhd friendly habit building app ads and adhd planner app ads..... cool except the downside would be when i forget that it exists so its pointless, or the interest in using said app wears off too so its useless to even buy into them
I was diagnosed last year and I’m in my 30’s and YES… they’re legit… idk meds help. Therapy helps, I had an anxiety attack last week for the first time since taking my meds and it was weird and for no reason. But yeah… these things don’t work. Also good luck 😊
I'm depressed, have nothing to do and a 41 minute Drew Gooden video just did more for my mental health than all these products ever could.

The growing inaccessibility of science is actually a huge issue in academia. If you ever find yourself stuck behind another journal paywall, reach out to someone who is working or studying at a university or lab (grad/undergrad student, postdoc, etc). Their institutions normally pay for access and they can probably get you a copy of the article you're looking for.
If you go through Research Gate or if they provide their emails/contact info somewhere in the abstract or on the page, you can also reach out directly to the authors for a copy. As long as they're not scummy weirdos, most researchers should be willing to share their articles.
Haha! I work at the sleep insert place (Inspire Medical) as an intern... It's a medically prescribed sleep apnea device that works extremely well, however it's only prescribed if CPAP machines don't work... Interesting to know our advertising is to the same pseudoscience demographic

My only thought while he’s talking about the vibrating devices is how much cheaper it would be to buy another kind of vibrating device
And at least that one gives you dopamine, if you use it not completely incorrectly.
And that other device you mentioned is better for your mental health too.
