  • Recently there's been a lot of talk about Doctor Who spinoffs. From UNIT adventures to animated anthologies, everyone has an idea of what spinoffs would work, but today I wanted to talk about how the "Whoniverse" could easily slip up and not fulfill the potential it actually has.

    Doctor who theoretically should be the easiest concept to make a universe for. Not only have you got the whole universe to play with but the entire length of time too. Why not have TV series’ that take time establishing and getting to know different society’s in different locations and times over more than one episode and not just one like we get in the main show

    • @chase0300
      @chase0300 Před 10 dny +2

      The problem is that all the interesting factions are too Doctor dependent. A universe is about the factions that make it up.
      For example, Fallout has the Brotherhood, Vaulttech, Enclave, NCR etc.
      Star Wars has the Republic, Jedi, Rebellion and Empire etc.
      ASOIAF: has the Targaryens, Starks, Lannisters etc.
      These universes can tell spinoffs because their faction has its own history and goals that have interesting stories to tell.
      Doctor Who, in contrast, has the Daleks, Cybermen, Timelords and Santurans. These factions barely interact with each other. And when they do, they stories aren't compelling enough to tell great stories.

  • @Venemofthe888

    I think a good spin off has links to the original program but it can stand up on its own to a extent you might not know its even a spin off. Frasier is actually a good example of this where it stood up on its own despite it being a spinoff.
    You could even do a spinoff from a episode showing the aftermath of the Doctor's interference cause obviously those episodes universe keep going afterwards. You could even have the doctor's interference leading to a fixed point like the runaway green house effect for Venus

    Spin offs that would be real cool would be limited series examining the specific worlds of enemies. A "Saving Private Ryan" type of show would be awesome in exmaning the Daleks. Showcase why the daleks are so scary, and not to sound moody, but introduce characters to kill off, Rogue One style, to really show how powerful the Daleks are and show that these are enemies not to be messed with. Or do a "Last of Us" type show exploring the apocalyptic aftermath of mass upgrading to cybermen. The characters dont need to be heroes, but be eyes to explore the villains and threats.

    I have an idea for a Dalek spin off that is set on an enter different planet. With the first series basically being the lead up to the Dalek invasion of the planet. Seeing this species literally going to have to defend their enter way of existence against the Daleks. Knowing that every episode they move ever closer. Then at the end of the episode before the final the Daleks arrive. Then the final is basically the Daleks conquering them. Seeing the people of this world desperately trying to hold them off but to no hope.
    What makes it even more tragic. Knowing from the first episode that they lose. Because that doesn't make it, will they lose. It makes it when they will lose.
    Also already thought of the characters I want for it.

    If theres ever a spin-off 'team', they need to have an episode where the Doctor is the 'monster of the week', but ofc to his undisclosed perspective he's the hero as usual, (airing the same episode in the main show from the doctor's point-of-view), where the doctor lands on a planet, which has a big bad government figure, but during the story someone sends out a distress beacon, which calls the spin-off gang to the same location to deal with the big villain, the doctor. So both parties spend the story fighting one another til communication between the two parties saves the day before the inevitable teamup to defeat the proper villain or something

  • @matt0044
    @matt0044 Před 9 dny +2

    I think Doctor Who series 4 did this approach to spin offs and crossing over well.
    The Stolen Earth and Journey's End are one hell of a two parter that has The Sarah Jane Adventures along with Torchwood to crossover into the main series. Characters and elements from each spin-off it utilized as a means of helping the Doctor against the greatest threat the Daleks have ever posed.
    However, it also involves aspects that few wouldn't be able to catch on quickly. I hadn't seen The Sarah Jane Adventures since it never made it to the States as far as I know. However, I knew that Sarah Jane was still investigating alien phenomenon as "School Reunion" showed. Of course, she'd have a supercomputer in her attic. I also assumed that Luke was a boy she adopted before learning his origins in "Invasion of the Bane."
    Kind of wish we saw Maria and Clyde when Luke called them with their actors on the sets of their homes. Maybe have them gawk at the Daleks from afar and hold on as the Earth is towed back. Maybe a cameo of Rani if they felt bold enough to promote SJA Series 2.
    Torchwood, on the other hand, I had seen in full before Series 4 and as such, I was able to appreciate some nods to the spin off such as Gwen calling her husband, Rhys, or telling Ianto that she'd rather go down fighting like Owen and Tosh.
    However, I wouldn't have needed to have seen the spin off since I'd have known that Jack had a team in his sect of Torchwood since Series 3. We're just meeting them in the main series proper.
    Additionally, we don't need to know about Rhys to understand that Gwen's calling her loved ones during this worldwide crisis. "Owen" and "Tosh" are easy to identify as previous members of Torchwood that had died in their dangerous line of work. Their two seasons of adventures are just self-contained enough to be basically backstory for them.
    As such, Series 4's finale feels less like you had to have seen both spin-off to understand and more like they pique your interest in them. What was Jack up to during Series 3 and 4? What's going on with Sarah Jane these days?
    That's really what the new Whoniverse should take a cue from. The Main Series crossing over with the spin-off should have us feeling less like we missed out and more like, "Cool, I know what I'm putting on my watch list ASAP."

  • @carsforever4002
    @carsforever4002 Před 11 dny +2

    Tbh a lot of people had watched The Sarah Jane Adventures without having ever watched Doctor Who which was really cool and the whole premise being ‘Life on earth can be an adventure too’ for the target audience was lovely and being able to envision real aliens walking on a normal street was great for the imagination. The present day Earth is a nice way for people to connect with the show because of its familiarity with the added sci-fi fun.

  • @connordoig

    A parallel universe for example were we follow a team of characters who correct an event that was changed by the Doctor in his “timelord victorious era” and this pushes him over the edge and you do a limited series of this team of characters getting hunted by a relentless,cold blooded ego driven Doctor from a horror perspective.
    Another you could do a Game of Thrones style show with Galifrey as the setting and could have the odd cameo from a young Doctor, Master or Rassilon.
    Last option off of the top of my head would be a Doctor Who universe version of the suicide squad. Could have a team of different aliens, creatures, robots etc we’ve seen over the years being controlled by one of the many corporations we’ve seen based in universe and could set that in space giving the opportunity to travel to diverse planets and settings and different run ins with old characters or places previously been established.

    On the concern about “needing to watch absolutely everything to understand the next thing,” I kinda just don’t think that’s something that needs to be worried about - or at least not nearly as much as it’s brought up.
    I’m not saying I don’t sympathize with viewers worrying about it - I’ve worried about that too in tons of franchises. But as someone who recently has gotten into comics, my main message to people concerned about that is: it really *is* ok to not know everything - you’ll probably still enjoy the new thing, and now you just know of something else you might enjoy later, too.
    Of course there are examples of specific stories not done well, but I really think audiences, directors, writers, etc., need to learn that it’s ok to not know everything all the time. Writers have to trust their audiences and audiences have to trust the writers to explain *enough.*
    Of course said trust can be broken and sometimes must be earned, but I just want to urge people that the way this sort of concern is so often presented is just overblown.

    I've long advocated for Dr Who to be the only ongoing series in the Whoniverse and all spin-offs being mini-series (ESPECIALLY if they go the route of giving past Doctors their own shows) so that would suit me perfectly fine 🙂
    If I could make some spin-offs, I'd do a comedy about a family of Zygons trying to blend into Earth society as they live here in secret (basically a family comedy, but they happen to be aliens) or a show set back on prehistoric Earth when the Silurians still ruled it (what little I've heard about 'War Between the Land and the Sea' sounded like it was modern day), maybe have a human time-traveller get trapped there for the sake of relatability (I think the superman prequel Krypton did something similar?) At least those ideas would avoid the "alien cop" template.

    Honestly, I loved Class and it's probably my favourite DW spinoff. When I saw the trailers I thought it was going to be like an aged-up Sarah Jane Adventures but as you said, it was unique enough to make it work. The morally grey characters made the show feel fresh and it felt like less of a Defenders of Earth type concept and more like a bunch of kids trying to their best (in a good way!). It also successfully addressed a lot of social issues (racism, homophobia, colonialism) without it feeling (too) forced. All the characters were interesting and their relationships felt real and nuanced. In eight episodes they showed more development and complexity than some characters in long-running TV series.

    I really hope that there's a wide variety of spinoffs if we get them, but something tells me we're going to get a repeat of the so-called 'glory days' and with disney's involvement, I can also see it lended in with the mcu-style cinematic universes which is defo the wrong thing to do with dr who, but studios sometimes focus on trends instead of what's best for the show. idk, the longer it's been the more I worry about rtd as the showrunner again. but on a more positive note, I think a spinoff based on dorian maldovar and his spaceport-bar could be really good. it has a central location that's a set, and it's easy enough to create other settings - just like the main show, in a way - and it's not earth-centric. it also is a seedy place so inserting tension wouldn't be hard no matter the plot, and it's got the opportunity to be so loosely connected to the main show since who remembers this one character and location from a couple of episodes that aired thirteen years ago and frankly had much more interesting things going on in them to boot!

    For me I am more interested in the darker side of Doctor Who. This isn’t so much the adult side like Torchwood but more unnerving and weird side of Who that I don’t think has been given enough depth on TV.
    Examples are as you brought up, a walking dead Cyberman-like series sounds really cool. Set in the future on a distant world that “conveniently” looks like Earth we could explore the horror of conversion. What do survivors do to try and survive in such a setting.
    Another example would be an outright horror film or limited series where a nobody character has fallen into the Toymakers domain like how one falls into the backrooms. It could be like the film Jumanji but more twisted and scary because of the setting.

    I think the what will happen is that they'll start with Space Cops shows, then maybe push into other genres and styles. As much as we all we don't really want that. Its a safe choice.
    Loved the shoutout to the RCU as a massive Remedy Enterainment Fan, the RCU is really how you do a Connected Universe (granted there's only like 4 games in the RCU, more if you include Quantum Break and Max Payne). I feel like a good project needs to be a self contained within the larger universe.

    Give it three Gatwa episodes in, then you'll know if there's any real chance of spinoffs, or a "Whoniverse". The new series has to make the show mainstream television again, before anyone will be greenlighting any substantial spinoff.
    Incidentally a good way of keeping the older fans who are less enamoured of the new more child-friendly, fantasy Doctor Who is some form of darker spinoff, like Angel was to Buffy,

    I would love some kind of historial set almost like Doctor Who period drama in a way. but maybe not about like figthing aliens but because the original focus of the show was meant to be about teaching history and science maybe have a historical set series with a science focus but also making use of the time travel shennanigans. like an out of time stuck in the wrong era person who just accidented there way into a past era and is just trying to fit in and we see all their fish out of water goings on but they also use their advanced knowledge to better the society around them and help people. i dunno that's just an idea.

    I don't mind 1 spinoff like for UNIT that is what we expect, but I want at least 2 other shows that shake things up. I have vowed to never watch another police procedural, so I really don't want another Torchwood. It was ok, but no, that time has passed. An Anthology series focusing on random in universe species and places would be really fun.
    I would really like for Verada's character to be from a far future Earth Colony with a setting like Blade Runner meets Andor or Firefly. Perhaps she's from a group of adventurers and decides she needs a break and goes with the Doctor, while we can pick up with rest of her crew in a spinoff of epic (unrelated to most of DW) proportions.

    Doctor Who What If -> Take existing characters and do what if the doctor hadn't shown up, or what happened when the doctor left, or what happened in the lead up. Each episode can have a different cast for the most part and you could do a bring them all together at the end thing by including the doctor. You don't need a regular cast to tell a good story. That could even be called something like stories from the library and River song could be the narator telling the stories to Cal et al
    I like the time agency idea too and it doesn't have to be doctor who ish it could be either quantum leap ish where they're just trying not to break history rather than putting it right or star trek ish where they're going boldly and meeting new folks.
    Something more directly like trek could be doable as well with the whole great and bountiful human empire, there's multiple galaxies of interconnected whoniverse there, why not a story about the bureaucracy of such an empire or the trade routes or the meeting aliens or anything else that's just set dressing in a main Who story.

  • @thevirgologychannel6215

    I think the problem we have is that audiences like the familiar. That’s why shows like Law and Order or CSI and Even Game of Thrones are popular. Truth is different doesn’t necessarily mean good. I think some good “What if “ quality animation for former Doctors could work, if it’s done like the short trips novels. Also there was a fantastic story from the 90’s about a cyberman from the future who looks human and is send back into time to contemporary earth. Imagine a show featuring this character but done in the style of the old Incredible Hulk tv series. No alien bad guys all human scum bags out smarted by a good future cyberman. (A bit terminator I know). I did have an idea about a troop of rogue dishonored Sontarans on the run from their own people. All they want to do is to left alone but get dragged into helping other Aliens as they’re trying to find a new safe home.

    I gotta be honest, and avoid some pitchforks, but I despised Class from the first episode, and I grew to loathe Torchwood after a while as it just became such a downer at every turn (despite good drama). For me, you need a few things to launch a successful who spin-off:
    #1 a compelling lead, someone preferably established in Who, but not necessarily a huge named star. See: Bernice Summerfield and how River was expanding early on.
    #2: Familiar elements. Part of why Class never worked for me was they missed perfect opportunities like having one of the cast tie in closer to an existing Who creation (IE: 1 is a zygon, or a time displaced survivor of a previous adventure, etc.). The show shouldn't be structured entirely around this, but make good use of the ideas that exist in the universe already where appropriate.
    #3: It needs to be distinct from Who but not go so far as to alienate fans. Torchwood was the butt of much criticism early on for how juvenile the "mature" part of the show was at first, where as SJA was well received even though it skewed towards a young audience.

  • @TheHufflepuffSaint
    @TheHufflepuffSaint Před 11 dny

    Annoyingly, I fear any spin off will be pitched to Disney who will give their "opinion".
    I know that it was said, Disney's involvement was just because of Disney+ and they were giving a little bit of money to the BBC and such BUT after hearing that Disney did screenings of the Church on Ruby Road and told the BBC to do reshoots because originally the Doctor came in too late of the episode and Disney wanted him in from the start. Like with that Snowman head falling scene, apparently that scene was put in due to Disney's "opinion" after a apparent poor screening. And while I like the scene, I fear that Disney's involvement is more involved than I first thought especially after all this time zone nonsense, prioritizing American Audiences over the UK.
    And I can imagine any spin off will need some seal of opinion from Disney if these spin offs related to Ncuti's Who will go to Disney+ too.

    I think you're right but then I feel, and this is my own opinion, I feel like the Doctor Who universe doesn't really have a consistent vibe like for example STAR Wars or even MCU? I can't really explain what I mean but it feels so all over the place so a spin-off that's more far off from DW would feel almost complete unconnected? I don't know I feel the lore is just too shallow somehow. But I would enjoy a time agent thing but then not like in doctor who where they only ever fight aliens in the past but real time travel shenanigans.
