Unleashed was a game changer for metal, priests finest moment ever, saw them live for the first time a few months after it was released when they supported Status Quo. 😍
Unleashed in the East is a classic!! One of the best live albums ever!!!
Saw the 'unleashed' tour in '79 in Manchester UK with the mighty Maiden as the support act!
Very close, but gotta go with Priest, in my opinion the songs on unleashed are better than studio
I listened to Priest in the East at least 5000 times and by far my all time favorite album, live or studio.
And Priest played Tyrant live in Vegas and was amazing.
Unleashed is an undisputed live metal album!!Priest rules for sure!!
Maiden Japan (17 song long version) from 1981 (with Dianno) is insanely amazing, as is Maiden's Beast Over Hammersmith (from 1982) (with Dickinson).
Two masterpieces, btw Di'Anno voice is the shit!!!
"LIVE AFTER DEATH"!!! UNTOUCHABLE!!!
Maiden is and will always be my favorite metal band ever. That said, I have to go with Priest's Unleashed. And here's why:
When I go to grab a Priest CD to listen to I typically go for Unleashed. When I go for a Maiden CD it's typically Number of the Beast or Powerslave. While Live After Death is a great live document, the Priest one is definitive. I prefer all those versions of the songs to the studio ones. And, while I enjoy the Maiden songs on Live After Death, I prefer all the studio versions to the live cuts here. Sorry, Steve!
Definitely. The version of "Exciter" on Unleashed is way heavier, as are all of the live versions on that album.
All that, and Bruce missed a bunch of notes on that tour. I saw Maiden 4 times that year, and he was flat on high notes. Maiden is my favorite between the two bands, but Unleashed is the better record.
22 Acacia Ave far better than studio imo
Ozzy's "Tribute" is another awesome 80s live record.....nearly perfect album.
JP all day for me. In my humble opinion the best album JP ever released
I have much history with both but this particular album. I going with priest Halford sounds amazing.
Priest by a mile, Victim of Changes, Green Manalishi and Diamonds & Rust, the vocals, the guitar solos, just killer.
Life after Death is amazing!!! No debate .... Life after Death captures the whole concert experience on the World Slavery Tour. Epic🤘🤘🤘🤘
I agree. JP’s versions of their earlier songs from Unleashed in the East are better than the earlier studio albums. Wore the hell out of that tape in the early 80’s.
I'm going to have to go with Judas Priest on this one for sure!
There are songs on this album that I prefer to the album versions.
Yes! Totally agree! Actually, "Unleashed in the East" is the best Heavy Metal of all times, in my humble opinion. perfect from the first til the last track.
Maiden may be my all-time favorite band, but I gotta go with Priest in this matchup, due to Bruce's voice being pretty much shot at this point of the World Slavery Tour and as most have already said, the live versions on Unleashed are better than the studio versions.
Nebulous Prowler I couldn’t have said it better. Maiden is my favorite but Halford was on top here where Dickinson really needed a break. Both Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are top tier
J'ai découvert Judas Priest avec Unleashed in the East en 1979.Cet album est vraiment extraordinaire.Retouché en studio ou pas,peu importe.Tous les albums live sont de toute façon retouchés en studio...Unleashed in the East is a masterpiece.
Unleashed introduced me and my 15 year old contemporaries to Priest at the time of its release. Game changer for me.
Hey youngsters! I was there, at the Palladium, NYC in what, 1978 (?) where JP opened up for Starz. Can you imagine hearing JP as the opening act? Halford sounded as good live as the studio and he had the octaval range. It was truly a privileged moment.
Gotta give this one to Maiden. I caught them on the Powerslave tour and love to relive those songs.
Unleashed in the East is like a list of names of 80s bands... Just to show how influential it was.
Like who? I'm generally asking I have no idea
Running Wild & Exciter
Yes, Running Wild, Exciter, Sinner, Genocide, Tyrant... All bands that took their name from songs featured on Unleashed in the East!
@@brenobutcher 'Yes' is a different story though :)
@@karstenthiemann2828 I think I wrote Yes referring to Gliad Baruch's answer, not referring to the band Yes, it would make no sense...
Tough Both Are Must Haves But I Have to go with Maiden Live After Death, in High School I didn't know a Metal Fan that didn't have this IT WAS A MUST!
Live after death for me. If a person sees the video of it then listens to the album, the visual stays in the mind. It’s the only live album I know that takes me to the concert. To me that’s a pretty powerful thing. Love it.
Unleashed In The East. My first Priest cd. Found it at K-Mart many years ago.
Priest Priest Priest...One of the best live albums ever...
Priest! I grown up with that album literally!
Iron Maiden- Live after Death but both "Iron Maiden" and "Judas Priest" are my favorite bands of all time and Dio as well !
I was 11 when British Steel came out. I asked my parents to by it for me for Christmas. They mistakenly bought me Unleashed instead. Best mistake my parents ever made!
Definitely Priest when it comes to this comparison of the two bands.
Great job breaking down both albums guys. These are two live albums near and dear to all metal fans.
Unleashed in the East has always been my all time favourite album. Halfords voice is out of this world
OMG howhow howww do you chose from this this is just crazy two absolutely incredible live albums from two of the best
Judas Priest- Unleashed In The East.
Definite Priest album, a real milestone in Heavy Metal genre. Truly defining, pinpoint, the genre, hear the aggressive energy, the sound still relevant. This is THE Metal album.
9 songs original vinyl is THE meat. Song titles has made 9 bands. Best live album ever.Rob Halford is singing like he is the Olympics.
Unleashed in the East all the way. That's the album that first got me into metal when I was 11.
I like Maiden as a band better, but UITE is a fire-breathing locomotive of snarling fury from beginning to end.
I've suggested this before, Pete, but Tygers of Pan Tang released their 1981 recording "Live at Nottingham Rock City" in 2001. It sadly didn't see the light of day back then (recording during the Spellbound tour) but is an excellent document of a band that was firing on all cylinders. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the band, it featured John Sykes on lead guitar (prior to his stint in Thin Lizzy) and there are some blistering solos. Worth checking out, even if it doesn't feature in the classic album wars...
Death In The Spotlight . Spellbound is a classic metal album. Best Tygers album easy.
@@grahamtaylor8912 Definitely. Have you heard the live album in question? If I remember correctly, it was recorded using the Rolling Stones infamous mobile recording unit and they captured a great sound. Too bad that they were only able to keep that line-up together for one more album and tour.
Death In The Spotlight . No I haven't even heard about it. Going to check it out. Agree with you on that lineup. Gangland and Tyger Bay were my favourite tracks on Spellbound. Plus Hellbound obviously.
@@grahamtaylor8912 It was released on the label Spitfire Records (a subsidiary of Eagle Rock, which in turn belongs to Universal) in 2001 but is fairly difficult to get hold of, it had a limited release back then so I was lucky to get a copy. If you have any trouble tracking it down, perhaps there's a way I can send the mp3 files to you. I've got the whole cd (and separate tracks) on file. Tried to put it on CZcams a few times but it was taken down every time. Copyright bullsh*t and all that.
Iron Maiden by a whisker for me thanks to the inclusion of the Piece Of Mind tracks. My favourite album from both of these bands catalogues. Maiden actually released a Bruce live tune back in 1982 three years before Live After Death. Remember Tomorrow which was the B-side of the Number Of The Beast single. And a cracking version it was.
"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,..."
Live After Death.. One of the greatest live albums of all time!!!!!
Unleashed was my introduction to metal. And live after death, I was there at Long Beach Arena for those recordings.🤘🏼
Priest. Unleashed in the East. The Green Manalishi. Some of the thickest most tasteful guitar work I've ever heard. Love Maiden but Unleashed in the East is my favorite Metal album of all time.
Listen to Priest’s brutal guitar tone from the 1983 Us Festival? Amazing!
Unleashed in the East all the way. Legendary slab of crushing live metal. What can top Genocide-Tyrant for raw power and energy? Off the charts. The best line up of the band as well. I've had Live After Death since release, and it's great for sure, but outclassed by Unleashed.
Scorpions World Wide Live is super heavy and awesome!
Both These Albums Were Released When These Bands Were really at Their Peak...I Have always Regarded these albums as an end of one era and the start of a New One...Flawless performances by Both. .A Real agony of Choice so a Dead heat For me
Growing up in a hick town in Wyoming it was called unleashed in the east had no idea of Tokyo tapes but this one is my pic as well I love that quote all killer no filler.
Maiden all the way 100% for me..How about Judas Priest Live (87) vs . Scorpions World Wide Live
AXXXDEAN I’m going with Priest...Live
I love Iron Maiden for their guitars, but I love Judas Priest for their vocals
80's live albums apart from the ones you've mentioned: Sabbath - Live Evil, Purple - In Concert (BBC recordings), Live In London, MSG - One Night At Budokan, Ozzy - Tribute, Speak Of The Devil, Whitesnake - Live...In The Heart Of The City, Gary Moore - We Want Moore!, Thin Lizzy - Life. These 80's live albums are the ones I listened to the most from that era. Deep Purple's In Concert is my favourite, closely followed by their Live In London, then Live Evil, Live...In The Heart Of The City, One Night At Budokan, Tribute, We Want Moore!, Speak Of The Devil, and lastly, Life (which I hardly listen to now). Made In Japan is not only my favourite live album from any era but it is and unequivocally THE best live release of ALL time.
Priest never really gripped me like Maiden. I love the Di' Anno era but Bruce was inspired here. Love it so Maiden for me on this one.
Unleashed in the East gets my vote!! Awesome live metal album!
With this and the Motorhead vs Saxon show you have just done you have picked four of my favourites. Unleashed in The East was originally released with a 7 inch EP of extra tracks here in the UK. I've also managed to get a copy of Beyond The Realms of Death and added it as a last track after the bonus cuts fro the CD re-issue. Live After Death is equally wonderful and to hear those extra cuts from Hammersmith and especially Wrathchild and Phantom of The Opera really brings back great memories. Both of these are stonkingly great albums and hoestly I couldn't choose between the two but if you put a gun to my head I would pick Maiden's Live After Death as I was at one of the Hammersmith shows recorded. What a great time to be alive.
You didn't have to buy live albums, you could also record your favorite bands live on the radio.
Back in the day, they used to do a lot of live broadcast.
King Biscuit Flower Hour anyone.
And iconic live albums of the 80's
Scorpions - World Wide Live
Two very important albums in my life.
But Unleashed in the East is unbeatable. Metal perfection to my ears.
Wow. Maybe : the hardest ever 4 me so far. I actually can’t pick one. Monday we’d Friday. Might be. Maiden. Tues. Thursday Saturday. Priest. Sunday. Double up with both. Tremendous war guys. Awesome!!!
They are both amazing. Can't we leave it at that?
they r both iconic. i remember Live after death being my first real exposure to Maiden after Fear of the Dark. and i started gravitating to all things heavy from then on
This one is no contest ... The beast that is Priest - Unleashed in the East.
Both of them are excellent. I'm taking a pass on this one.
Great discussion. Thanks gentlemen!
OK, sounds like I'm the luckiest person here. Never had the Maiden album, but I have the DVD at home, so I think I've caught most of it. Have never heard the Priest (have some other CDs, but not that one). Definitely picking the Priest up; sounds like I'm in for a real treat! I love these matchups, Pete...I'm finding all kinds of stuff that's slipped through the cracks for me.
Great Show. Pete said how few great live albums came out in the 1980s. Here are some of my favorites:
1981 Motörhead: No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith
1982 Talking Heads: The Name of This Band is Talking Heads
1983 U2: Under a Blood Red Sky
1984 Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense
1985 Iron Maiden: Live After Death
1986 Stevie Ray Vaughan: Live Alive
1987 Aerosmith: Classics Live II
1988 Motörhead: No Sleep at All
Unleased was a turning point for Priest as it raised their profile even more in the UK and, obviously from this clip, in the USA. In the UK the first pressings had a free EP with Beyond the Realms, Rock Forever and Hell Bent and, as you mentioned, was always baffled why it was never a double album. Maybe the record company didn't have full confidence in them back in those days. Who knows. Now I know to look out for an import of Priest In The East. Great analysis of two classics.
A lot of my teenage years spent listening to that Live after Death album
Priest all the way on this one.
I own 3 of the live with a symphony, Kiss, Metallica, and Scorpions. I really like them and I feel like overlooking them is shortsighted. We always hear you say "as I get older I have a new appreciation for...". I think these albums represented a new, if fleeting, idea that tied metal to classical music. I'm not saying these are the classic live albums, they are gimmicks, but they are guilty pleasures that have a place in the realm of metal/hard Rock music. Thank you.
Lloyd
Unleashed in the east got it on vinyl great priest album
Got to be Priest for me. I saw them many times between 1978 and 1983. I saw Maiden twice, with Di'anno, but never with Bruce. Both great albums though.
@Scott Leoski yes indeed!
@Scott Leoski Defenders was the last tour I saw them on. Turbo put me off Priest for a while.
I wore the Live After Death tape out a couple of times my Junior year in high school. Totally rocked. That said, Unleashed in the East is a CD I still drive with so have to give the edge ti Priest on this one.
Some personal favorite live albums of the 80's:
Talking Heads- Stop Making Sense
Scorpions- World Wide Live
Judas Priest- Priest...Live!
Pat Benatar- Live from Earth
Pink Floyd- Delicate Sound of Thunder
Crosby, Stills & Nash- Allies
Peter Tosh- Captured Live
..and my all-time favorite live album: Elton John's Live in Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
Unleashed in the East. Best metal of all time! Live or not!
Love both but without a doubt...Priest is an absolute masterpiece!
One of my top 5 live-albums ever
Unleashed in the East!
Maiden's definitive live statement is, IMO, the 2002 Box Set released of "Beast on the Road". THAT album stands toe-to-toe with UITE!!
Bruce's live vocals in 1982 were at his best. Definitely, BOTR blows away LAD.
Based on decade earlier release, Judas Priest, hands down. Length, pace and intensity pitch perfect.
I have a bootleg of the original concert(s) when JP recorded Unleashed. You can definitely tell Rob is struggling at times, but he still sounds good. Doesn't matter to me that the vocals were recorded in the studio. Unleashed in the East will always be my favorite live album. An absolute classic!
Here is another great album that I bought after the World Wide Live from Scorpions , Live After Death. Maiden is another of my favorite bands but I respect Judas Priest which is a great band too.
80's great live albums. Thin Lizzy Live-Life . John Skyes on all the new and old Lizzy. My favorite from the 80's
Probably the most SHOCKING thing on Pete’s friendly debate/. Is that he did not know there were additional songs that he was “ cheated out of! Either - did I. I have his version. But I’m shocked cause Pete is legendary with his knowledge of OUR music! Still he’s the best I’ve seen! Keep it up
Not even close pete Unleashed baby
I love both bands and both albums. I seen the Live After Death tour at McNichols Arena in Denver. Was Unreal. I only seen the Screaming and Defenders tours from Priest. They were unreal too. So, I'm gonna go with Live After Death. You guys forget another live one. Scorpions "World Wide Live". Which was badass
It occurred to me how very lucky we were living in England through the 60's and 70's.
A constant diet of very high quality rock and prog for two decades, then along comes NWOBHM to maintain the standard.
For me?
Iron Maiden every time simply because I've followed them longer, great as Priest are,its always Maiden for me.
King Diamond put out a awesome live CD/DVD a few years ago.... it made me remember how great live albums are. Out of these two, I gotta go with Priest! I listen to it way more
Unleashed walks all over live after death
The Sinner is dark, heavy and frankly untouchable = JP all day.
11 months after the fact, i vote for Priest but i also LOVE Live After Death.
I am in love with this series of videos. Wonderful job guys. I am going to disagree with your point on Les Binks. I have never been a fan and actually like the sound of Priest better with Dave Holland. Scott Travis is incredible and I think he is the best ( maybe Simon Philips) Priest ever had.
Unleashed in the East, (even though it’s seriously touched up), is still a great album, especially because they pulled from Sad Wings of Destiny so much. One of the best albums of all time.
Sacrilege, I am about to show myself up as a philistine, but I've never been much of a fan of Maiden, they have just never "done" it for me. Priest on the other hand is one of my first loves in the rocknroll universe going right back to Sad Wings of Destiny and Sin After Sin, so it's clearly Priest for me by a knockout.
I just found this show so i am a bit late to the party so to speak. Really surprised to see so many choose Priest here. I love both of these bands and equally love these records. But for me Live After Death is the clear winner. I definitely get what people are saying about Priest here. Even if you you go with the Maiden version without the side 4 tracks from the album VS the extended Unleashed, i still believe Live After Death is the best. I guess for me is it is so much more powerful. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they were what 5-6 years apart. It just sounds better and i guess i am more attached to Maiden on this one. I would say if you pitted Live After Death VS Defenders of the Faith (30th Anniversary Edition) with the Live at Long Beach set i would have a different opinion. I would say that is the definitive live Judas Priest for me. I would totally pick that show over Live After Death. I always wished Priest had released a live document of that tour back in the day. The more i think about it Defenders live set blows away LAD. Saw both shows live in 84 and even recorded the Priest show live from the radio as well. I am sure i wasn't the only doing that.Thank you for this show and everything else you do Pete !!
Just listened to BOTH this last week...MIND BLOWING. Yes, have always been great, and are on the short list to CDs I take with me in the car...THANK YOU PETE...after multiple years listening to both...Priest wins hands down...because there's no filler. Not that Maiden is full of fat...but there's one or two tunes I would have left off. Unleashed in the East is masterful from Exciter to Tyrant...and one to the last 3 if you have the remaster...Brilliant!
What’s your opinion on the Iron Maiden live albums Death on the Road & Flight 666? Thanks
Five top live albums of the eighties? I'll give you nine but the first one were not released until the early ninetes but were released as a mini-Lp when it first came out.
Live a life -Accept (mini-Lp "Kaizuko-Ban)
World wide live - Scorpions
Live after death -Iron Maiden
Priest Live - Judas Priest
One night at Budokan -MSG
Beast from the East -Dokken
The Spirit -Magnum
Open fire -Y&T
Stages -Triumph
In my mind are all of these Classics. Always been a sucker for live albums three favorites are:
The last in live -DIO
The last dance -Magnum
Both from the ninetes and
Live in the still of the night -Whitesnake from early 2000.
In the eighties there was also The Eagle Has Landed by Saxon en World Wide Live by the Scorpions
Dokken - Beast From The East 1988 is a great live album
Les Bank quit and was not fired. As he explained on KK's website last year or two years ago, as per his contract, he had to be paid a recording fee. He did not get his fee paid for Unleashed by the JP management. Hence, he left (no pay = no play).
You can find the bootleg for one of the shows that was used for Unleashed in the East here (the sound is pretty good):

This the full show (see song list below). It was CBS Records that decided to only release the live album as a single LP, rather than the whole concert as a double-LP.

Wow, great head to head boxing match here. Both are classics ! Have to go with Judas Priest
Maiden for me. It was the first Maiden album I bought (on vinyl!). I'm way more of a casual Priest fan.
I’ve never seen Judas Priest but like them a lot. The first time I remember coming across them was in 1980 in our local library. I remember staring at the cover of ‘Unleashed in the East’ and thinking it looked fantastic. I didn’t hear it until a few years later and realized it was a classic. I saw Maiden on the ‘Powerslave’ tour at Hammersmith Odeon in London, a riot of spandex, metal and Egyptology. So ‘Live After Death’ captured a show I’d been at. But my vote goes to Priest, everything about that record is legendary.
I have the Live after death dvd 📀
