I'm pissed off when there's no 'monster's den' like this one. the team excel at sorting good from bad - but with the added public service of recommending films so bad, they are reeeal entertaining. Chris Alo is pissed off, you witness a new kind of poetry woven into film criticism. Chris loves to vent, and we love his venting. Where did Pete find these blokes? Magic. Loved this! 👍👍✔✔

Evil Dead the original film is a Hell of a lot scarier than Dead By Dawn for sure, but alongside the former I don’t agree with that statement about it being the same movie. Army Of Darkness was totally different and more like a Monty Python type of genre a.k.a: medieval horror fantasy. A Nightmare On Elm Street remake however? I agree ☝ 1980’s Don’t Go In The House scared the shite outta Me til the point where I had to sleep with my mom at age 13! Maniac kinda ripped this flick off a few years later when Joe Spinell’s character is surrounded by the dead women who he’s tortured and dressed in his mother’s clothes and the only thing that isn’t added; is that they’ve not been burned alive. Definitely worth seeking out though Pete and nothing like the usual low budget horror flicks of this period. Great addition with Jamie being added to your cast of characters btw! Sincerely, DJP Anal Cunt;Postmortem and Kilslug Sony; Earache 🇬🇧 Columbia and TAANG!! Records @ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Greetings 🖖 😅from Boston, Massachusetts Amerikkka quite naturally.. @DavysFlicks Pƙed rokem +9

Some eps could be longer - I don't think we did any service to Hammer's Draculas in one hour because of people's schedules. But overall...YT algorithms tell you when people tune out, so an hour to 90 for a panel is pretty optimum. Solo? 20mins tops, bit longer if there's stuff to show. Kinda sad it operates like that but if you don't meet the algorithm, it doesn't promote you, your growth slows etc etc.
I've done plenty of vids on my channel I want to keep talking on, but YT almost punish you for it. THey don't take die-hard cult fans into account!

Great show as usual - always excited for a new Monster's Den! You guys are spot on with the Marvel stuff lately ... it's just too much. They took what was a cool idea of linking those first few films with the Avengers movie, and just drove it into the ground. It was getting difficult enough to make sure you saw all of the movies to stay up to date, but then they introduced the TV shows into the mix ... then came the movies that took place prior to the first few (i.e. Capt Marvel, Black Widow) and then this multi-verse BS... I'm at the point of just throwing in the towel on the whole thing. As far as the topic of the show - the only one that came to mind that none of you mentioned was the Lost In Space film from 1998. I had grown up watching the reruns of the original show and just loving it. When they announced the movie with the usually reliable likes of Gary Oldman & William Hurt (not to mention the foxy Heather Graham), I was all in. But sakes alive, it was completely awful. And funnily enough it seems to have been erased from existence .. unlike many of the ones you guys discussed, I literally NEVER randomly encounter it on TV. And for the best, I'd say.

The darker tone put me off, but what really got me mad was the half-finished story ending. That had not been done before (other than Bakshi's horrid LOTR" - that pissed me off, too!)
I was calling it "The Empire Eats Bucks". Yes it is may be my favorite SW film nowadays.

At first it didn't interest me much (a show about a character from one of the movie spin-offs?) and the first 1-2 episodes were setting things up, but it won me over with it's great acting, political intrigue, character-driven drama and a good cast. While I enjoy the fun escapist fantasy of Star Wars with rebels vs empire and alien monsters, I can appreciate something different like they did here.

@@DavysFlicks I respect your opinion Davy, but I have to disagree here. I don't see how Aliens is a "dumb shooter" when it only features three major setpieces in the entire film and the movie takes a full hour before re-introducing the creatures. They spend time developing Ripley's trauma from the original, her chemistry with the supporting marines, her relationship with Newt and the new biology for the creatures. The way I see it is that Cameron knew that he couldn't top the surprise of seeing the Alien creature for the first time, so he went with a new approach by making an action movie. And since the good guys this time were highly-armed marines, they had to do something new with the title creatures themselves so I thought bringing in more of them and introducing a big "boss" alien (The Queen) was a genius move.
I respect Alien 3 for what it tries to do and it has its moments (Weaver's performance and a great cast of British actors), but for me, it ultimately falls short of the first two because I just don't care much about any of the supporting characters (they're played by great actors, but the characters have no depth to them), the overbearing nihilism and they don't do anything new with the creature itself. I also can't get over the way they write out Hicks and Newt at the beginning because it makes no sense with what was established with the alien lifecycle in the first two.

  • @TheMrHavish

Wanted to add another point to Davy saying Aliens is the same movie as Alien in that Alien is not entirely original itself. It's just a riff on the 50's sci-fi movie, It Came From Outer Space and Jaws (I believe they even pitched it as Jaws in space during production). It was the direction, cast, script, execution of the story and H.R. Giger designs that helped give it a new spin and made it a classic.
As I mentioned in my other comments, Aliens does a lot of things new as we see the themes of motherhood (Ripley and the Queen Alien defending their "daughters" be it Newt or the Hive), her distrust of Bishop and the commentary on Vietnam. The alien creatures themselves are given a new biology update and they're still the same dangerous intelligent creatures from the original (see: the scene where they sneak from the ceiling or when the Queen silently tells her soldiers to stand down during the standoff with Ripley), so I'm not seeing how it's a simple mindless action fest.
If anything it's Alien 3 that's just a retread of the original as it's doing the same setup - a bunch of people getting picked off by the creature in a enclosed setting - only this time we don't care about the supporting cast as much since they're all one-dimensional criminals and murderers. And they don't do anything new with the creature this time either!

The Last Jedi. I grew up on Star Wars, and even through the prequel trilogy I never gave up hope of it becoming great again. I hated Last Jedi so much I haven't watched another minute of Star Wars material since.
Honeymoon in Vegas. This is my earliest memory of walking out angry at the end of a movie (think I was about 13 or 14 when it came out). Everything about it felt it was specially designed to push my berserk buttons.

I was 14 years old and the worlds biggest “Trekkie” when this movie was released. I had - and still have - every Star Trek book, toy, magazine and whatever there was in 1978-79. The movie was cool for a few minutes seeing my beloved characters return but the thrill ended very quickly. The plot was basically a remake of The Changeling episode from season two.
Anyway Wrath of Khan saved the entire franchise. Excellent action scenes. Great uniforms. Better energy level and of course I was brought to tears at the end. The only other original series movie that sucked was number 5 Final Frontier. By then it was the end of the decade and it seemed like they were getting ready to pack it in. The final movie w the entire original cast - Undiscovered Country - was a nice farewell. Great action oriented movie with funny moments and heart. Smart decision to feature the primary adversaries : The Klingons.

Yet you do like Evil Dead 2
even though it is EXACTLY the same movie as the first one?
Also, The Last Jedi is top tier Star Wars. Some days even better than Return of the Jedi.
Jamie means Highlander 2 The Gathering. The Quickening was the subtitle given to a VHS release of the series pilot and a few other episodes spliced together. That’s what Dan was thinking of.

That Earth notion is quite the false equivalence! Distinct different though between your franchise comparisons- I'd watch Evil Dead 2 and not need to watch Evil Dead 1. I'm never not gonna watch Alien - the best of the films. So if I'm watching the best of the franchises? It's ED2 and Alien. I don't hate Aliens - I just don't get any value from it. It trades tension and atmosphere for explosions and quips. Alien 3 gets back to the grimy, depressing universe of the first film. And - this is classic sequel nonsense - "one monster was terrifying...let's have a hundred in the next!"
And btw, we only have a few seconds to rebut, so it wasn't gonna be a discusion on air but surev- there's also even minutiae that are the same..if we go into the weeds:.
Opens with Sigourney Weaver in cryo sleep waking up.
Grunts eating is how we meet the cast.
A drop ship lands on the same planet.
An advance party investigates the same Engineer's wreck (Newt's family/John Hurt n co)
They get a facehugger for their trouble
Both have a secret plant of the company who wants a Xenomorph for the company.
Both have androids who get wrecked.
Ripley runs about with a flamethrower
She uses it to torch one of her "friends" cocooned.
Minimum safe difference must be reached by Ripley
Not really dead, a Xenomorph secretly is on board the escaping ship..
Ripley suits up to defeat a xenomorph
Xenomorph is blown out into space.
Ripley ends both in cryosleep and with the same speech.
So...yeah! Pretty similiar even in plot structure I'd say.

I mean Weaver wakes up from cryo sleep in the third one too. And of course there was going to be a face hugger attaching an unsuspecting victim at the beginning. That was the whole point to establishing a colony on the planet. The company wanted an Alien to weaponized and that is how they were going to do it. Still don’t know which I would call my favorite. Probably the first. However, aside from a few similar story points that you mentioned, we are still talking about two very different styles and even genres of film.

Not like my opinion has any more value than yours does or Vice verse. I just like to mess with people. I know you would have explained things in more detail if given the chance. I just saw an opportunity and wanted to mess with you
😉. Take care.

Wouldn't keep the White Chicks joke in the set though - It was probably funnier in your head - but keep working on it! You might have some material there some time! ;)

The one of only movies I remember ever waking out of was "Teen Wolf"". I hated that movie and I haven't bothered to watch since.

The Predator. I left with that ‘punch in the gut’ feeling like the wife I don’t have cheated on me with my best friend. A fine representation of what cinematically shitting the bed looks like. As I’ve come around on the AVP films, The Predator remains to be the sole embarrassing uncle you don’t want to invite over because he’s touchy of the Predator films. God I hate that movie. Biggest let down I’ve ever felt from a film, even after seeing Dickshark 5x. As King Chris or Jamie would say, “Fuck this movie.”

Great video. My worst theatrical experience has to be Halloween Kills. Was super hyped for it but ended up leaving the theater wondering what I had just witnessed. Terrible movie but one that I constantly try to enjoy but so far no luck.

In a perfect world, they would have just left Star Wars alone after the original three. It's now become a bloated mess like the Marvel Films.
