    Between the hammer and the Anvil is my favorite solo of all time how Tipton turns that note into a harmonic without retouching the string is insane. And that's coming from a maiden fan

      @thrallsofmetal dude, how the hammer hits the anvil like a bass drum in the build-up to the solo is all time. Those bastards knew how to create tension in their music.

    The greatest to ever do it.
    1. Stained class - faultless on all levels. An immutable classic as immediate and catchy as it is dark and perturbing. The greatest heavy metal album of all time.
    2. Painkiller - Priest weaponised. A surging behemoth wrought of juggernaught riffs and the very quintessence of metal itself.
    3. DOTF - the apex of 80's priest. With thrash ascendant, priest showed the young blood that it yet had much to learn.
    4. Sin after sin - starbreaker. Sinner. Dissident aggressor. Diamonds and rust. Their progressive inclinations honed distilled into a monstrous classic of 70's metal.
    5. Firepower - an astonishing late career highlight. Ebola-catchy, spectacular riffwork throughout, proof positive that priest, even after all these years can deliver the goods.
    This fucking band man. One of my absolute favourites of all time, I'm so goddamn stoked you guys got around to this.

    3. Sad Wings of Destiny (1976) = 9/10
    4. Painkiller (1990) = 9/10
    5. Defenders of the Faith (1984) = 8.5/10
    6. Screaming for Vengeance (1983) = 8/10
    7. Killing Machine/Hell Bent for Leather (1979) = 7.5/10

    10. Redeemer of Souls (2014) = 7/10

    12. Point of Entry (1981) = 6/10
    13. Angel of Retribution (2005) = 5.5/10
    14. British Steel (1980) = 4/10
    15. Turbo (1986) = 3.5/10

    18. Demolition (2001) = 2/10
    19. Nostradamus (2008) = 1/10
    British Steel is…incredibly..beyond wildly overrated. There’s basically three good to great songs (Breaking the Law, Rapid Fire, and Grinder), three mediocre and nothing songs (Steeler, Metal Gods, and The Rage), and three songs that are absolute lame and cheesy trash (You Don’t Have to Be Old to Be Wise, United, and Living After Midnight). ❤

    This is a difficult ranking for me, the shit albums are pretty cut and dry in terms of ranking, and I have my top 3 set in stone, but everything else is almost entirely interchangeable. Priest is one of the most important bands in my life and they have released some of my favourite albums of all time. I saw them at Bloodstock in 2021, one of the first festivals to come back in the UK after the pandemic, and it was hands down the most perfect setlist I have ever seen in my life, I would not have changed the order or swapped any songs out for others. I am seeing them again next year with Saxon and Uriah Heep and can't fucking wait, I also absolutely love Panic Attack and think that if that standard is upheld for the rest of the new album, we could potentially have an album that surpasses Firepower. I'll give the ranking a go
    18) Nostradamus (yeah this is awful, I've listened to the whole thing just once and wanted to die by the end)
    17) Demolition (also awful with no redeeming qualities)
    16) Jugulator (Cathedral Spires is fantastic, the rest I really don't care for)
    15) Rocka Rolla
    14) Ram It Down
    13) Point of Entry (the best of the shit albums, Heading Out to the Highway and Desert Plains are great songs, the rest range from decent to mediocre)
    12) Angel of Retribution (a massive step up from Point of Entry, from here on out they're all killer)
    11) Turbo
    10) Killing Machine
    9) Sad Wings of Destiny
    8) British Steel
    7) Redeemer of Souls
    6) Sin After Sin
    5) Stained Class
    4) Firepower (god what a fucking incredible album this is, I remember being astonished at the sheer quality of this when it came out, and for me it's only gotten better. Just maybe a couple of tracks short of being a masterpiece)
    3) Screaming For Vengeance
    2) Defenders of the Faith
    1) Painkiller (a perfect album, and the title track, for me, is the definitive heavy metal song. Easily in my top 10 favourite albums of all time)

      Necrotic Nick- I had 6 in contention for the number 1 spot so I get it. This was tougher than I thought it would be but it was also a ton of fun going through these albums and ranking them. This might have been the first band that I associated the term "heavy metal" with as a kid. I haven't seen them since Ozzfest 2004 so I might have to catch them on their arena tour next year. Great ranking video as always. I really look forward to these. The holy trinity for me will always be Painkiller, Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith. These albums are the essence of Priest for me. They do have several albums that are hot manure, but the majority is pretty damn good to classic. Obviously, a VERY important band in the history of heavy metal.

    My top five would be
    1. Stained Class: classy af, really melodic, has a deep and exquisite sound and honestly, better lyrics than their later works
    2. Painkiller: all killer, no filler, power and speed, tons of epic lead guitar works, Halford sounds like crazy, just very good in every single way
    3. Sad wings of destiny: like stained class but a bit more bluesy, I like 70s priest a lot
    4. Defenders of the faith: their best 80s albums, many great solos and the production is awesome, I love the guitar tone quite a bit
    5. Sin after sin: has a few dead tracks but also some of their absolute bests like Sinner and Starbreaker

    I agreee with a lot of what Nick says in this video. My top three are Sad Wings, Sin after Sin, and STained Class. But I actually love teh song "last Rose of Summer". It's my favourite "pure" ballad Priest ever did (the second half of Dreamer/deceiver is really heavy!). It's got such an awesome, laid back feeling to it, and almost a bit jazzy at times, with Simon Philips' drums and even Ian Hill's bass (for once!) kind of setting the mood. That album is just magical as far as I'm concerned. It's the S Trilogy that's the best of Priest for me, but we also got....
    5. Painkiller
    and 4. Screaming for Vengeance.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, I really gravitate more towards those early classics more so now. I like the more lavish songwriting a bit more but I do love those 80's gems as well but for different reasons. I still can't really get into Last Rose of Summer though. For me it feels out of place on Sin After Sin and honestly if it wasn't a Judas Priest song I might appreciate it more. Still, that album rules.

    • @DamnableReverend
      @DamnableReverend Před 9 měsíci

      Yeah, the 70s stuff often sounds like Priest at their smartest -- even the lyrics are sometimes smarter. They never wrote a song like "Savage" after the 70s, and nothing really as emotional as 'Beyond the Realms of Death".
      Regarding "last Rose of Summer", it seems like featuring at least one somewhat different and arguably out-of-place song on a Priest album might have been a common thing. I'd argue on Stained Class it's of course the cover "Better by You, better than me" -- which rules. In the 80s Priest even made use of outside songwriters, and still managed to make it an acceptable choice on their albums. For me, "Last Rose of Summer" may be Sin after Sin's "weird track", but it totally works -- the instant that opening set of hendrix-like guitar chords starts I feel this charged, warm feeling enter me. I love the lower vocals, the way the guitars and bass play together, the jazzy chorus part (if it is really a chorus)...yeah, really great song for me, far better than many heavy bands' ballad-type songs, up there with the best of Scorpions' softer tunes from the era.

    Definitely a hard catalog to rank, I did it with Eli over on Dark Hymns From The Cold North a couple weeks ago. Nick, glad to see you had the 70s albums decently high on the list!
    Super cool to hear all your thoughts and interesting that, besides a few things here and there, all 5 of us ranked the albums pretty differently. Goes to show how strong a lot of the albums are, even if they do have some turds in there.
    Love how they went through so many different phases but almost all of their stuff is still instantly identifiable as Priest (mostly due to Rob’s vocals). He’s absolutely a metal god and the fact he’s still able to sing the way he does at 72 is insane. I need to check out his Halford band one of these days…recently watched a video of him filling in for Sabbath which was awesome as well!
    Here’s my top 10 (at the moment):
    1. Painkiller
    2. Sin After Sin
    3. Sad Wings of Destiny
    4. Stained Class
    5. Defenders of the Faith
    6. Screaming for Vengeance
    7. British Steel
    8. Hell Bent for Leather
    9. Rocka Rolla
    10. Firepower
    Great video as always, looking forward to whoever you guys rank next!
    Cheers 🤘🤘

    My personal favorite jumps between Stained Class and Defenders of the Faith.
    My hot take, is that I like Turbo more than Ram It Down, Point of Entry and even British Steel.
    Are you guys going to go over Dream Theater? They’ve already got 15 full lengths and are working on their next one. Would love to get Shredlord’s take on The Astonishing (Nostradamus v2) 😂

    My top 5
    1: Defenders of the Faith. This is the album that really got me into JP; I've always known who they are and I heard Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight numerous times on the radio, but this was the album that made me want to dive into more of their discography. The Sentinel and Some Heads Are Gonna Roll (to name a select couple) are fucking fantastic, it just oozes 80s metal (without getting into cheesy glam shit). Yeah the ending is kinda disappointing, but I can look past that because everything else on this album is perfect for me.
    2: Painkiller. Goddamn this album is just balls to the wall amazing. The title track literally encapsulates everything I love about this band, and Scott Travis' drumming really allows JP to push into a heavier direction, and they slayed at it. Leather Rebel also has incredible riffs, and Night Crawler has a dark, creepy vibe that I dig. Everybody is on fire on this album.
    3: Screaming for Vengeance. Interestingly, I wasn't actually the biggest fan of this album until I heard Electric Eye and Bloodstone, but those tracks made me open up to this album. Since then, I have continuously come back to this album and every so often I will be the humming the riff to songs like the title track and Take These Chains. My biggest complaint is, THEY SHOULD'VE MADE THE HELLION A PROPER SONG!
    4: Stained Class. My favorite 70's Priest album, and its influence is undeniable. Exciter is such a fantastic song and so heavy for its time period, and Beyond the Realms of Death is such a dark and beautiful ballad. And the cover of Better By You, Better Than Me is fantastic. This album has aged like a fine wine.
    5: British Steel. It might be overplayed and slightly overrated but I believe that this album is the ultimate example of how to perfectly combine heaviness and commercialization. Grinder has such a catchy riff that gets stuck in my head all the time, same with Rapid Fire. Lastly, United might be rotten cheese but at least it matches the album's heaviness, so it's got going for it.
    Honorable mention: Angel of Retribution. This album is a great comeback album (especially coming off from Demolition), and I fell in love with it soon after listening to Judas Rising, which is probably my favorite Priest song from their modern albums. Hellrider is up there as well, and Revolution is a great throwback song that reminds me of 70's rock, like Led Zeppelin. The production is perfect, the songs overall are timeless, and the cherry on top is the album cover; it's simple but elegant.

    Another classic for the Thralls roller decks, lads!
    Great to see you taking on Priest, and some great points made. I love that you highlighted "Bloodstone" and "Riding on the Wind" from Screaming, as I feel they get forgotten about a bit. "The Hellion/Electric Eye" song/intro concept is so influential.
    I've got to throw "Desert Plains" in from Point of Entry, which I think is an overlooked gem.
    My top 5:
    1. Stained Class - it's perfect and really ahead of its time;
    2. Screaming for Vengeance - a lot of nostalgia in here, but ten solid and memorable tracks with some killer standouts;
    3. Sin After Sin - Between this and Sad Wings, I really believe the 'metal guitar sound' starts here;
    4. British Steel - again, lots of nostalgia for me as a teenager, but the songs kill it;
    5. Painkiller - love Chris Tsangarides production and the songs are so good, KK and Glen raised their lead game; no one expected it.
    I'm also going to say this: I do love Turbo. It's got it's flaws and the production is radical even for that time, but some of the songs are just so damn catchy. Put it on in the car, drive up slowly to your mate at the traffic lights, grab your emergency stick-on moustache from the glove compartment, and wait for fireworks!

    Another awesome and funny show! I started getting into music a little more seriously, as a listener when I was about 12 or 13, around 1977. KISS was the first band to catch my eye and ear, on Alive I, but there were a few others like Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Uriah Heep and of course Judas Priest! The first album I heard and bought was Sad Wings Of Destiny and wow, what an album... Have been a Priest fan eversince, and although I have listened to tons of different bands and music genres over the years and love lotes of other bands and artists as well, Metal has always been and with each passing year, my fave genre, taking up about 95% of my listening and buying. I was a huge KISS fan for many years following, but slowly as I discovered more and more bands and and sub-genres within Metal, I eventually gave up on KISS (still appreciate and love their early stuff), but Priest has always an will always be there as one of my fave bands of all time! Yes, like any band or artist with 50 year plus career, it's perfectly understandable that there will be highs and lows. Many line up changes but the essential is still there! Loved what Scott Travis came to add to the band. Was sad to see Rob leave, but furtunately he came back to his frontman position which is his by merit! Then KK left, but in came a young gun, Richie Faulkner and gave the band a real kick in the ass, that the band was so desperatly needing.
    I really have not had the time to sit down and rank there albums but here are a few of my faves in cronological order:
    Sad Wings Of Destiny
    Stained Class
    Screaming For Vengence
    Painkiller
    Firepower

      Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We appreciate that! These guys definitely bridged that gap between classic rock and what would become heavy metal. I was never much of a Kiss fan but I love Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy which were definitely proto-metal in away. This was a lot of fun to rank especially given the impact this band has had on music in general when you break it down. Anyway, I'm glad you dug the ranking! We had a blast doing this one.

    One of the most extensive, exciting and the best catalogue in metal history. So hard to rank! Back in the 70's no one could even touch Judas Priest regarding the level of heaviness (maybe Motörhead) and speed - the best album is for me Killing Machine. This album incorporated the 80's sound and production despite being released in the 70's. Fabulous one! Packed to the brim with superb songs. Their best 80's album is for me Defenders of the Faith - Riffmasters, melody makers, speed demons producing controversial Eat me Alive (Ranked No. 3 on TOP 15 Filthy list), vampiric stomper Love Bites and instrumentally and vocally victorious masterpiece Sentinel. I skip the 90's and go straight to the 2000's - maligned fabulous Nostradamus where JP guys spread their wings and flew away in the sun. Loved the fact guys tried something new and unusual. Hope Invincible Shield direction is the same. Their 2010's era is bestially ruled by Firepower (one of the 5 best metal albums of that era for me). This album (especially Spectre did it to me) restored my faith in music industry by far. Album cover art is fantastic imho (even tho I did not like it that much at first sight), Ian's bass shines so much on this alb and Halfords vocals are unbelievable).......

      Necrotic Nick- This was kinda tough to rank. While I'd say they had some pitfalls in their discography when they were on they were writing some of the best stuff classic heavy metal has to offer still. I like Hellbent for Leather but I thought they refined that new direction more on British Steel. It was a solid transitional album into the next phase of their sound though for sure. I think Firepower will be a tough act to follow but judging by the singles it seems like their up for it. I'm looking forward to going over that one at some point.

I saw them live on their Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith tours in high school and they were amazing. Took both my adult kids to the Fire power tours and warmed my heart to see Glen come on stage. I think I threw up in my mouth when I heard Turbo lover after purchasing and listening for the first time…. Unleashed in the East has to be the greatest live album of all time. Great job guys!

      Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I think I officially "evolved" into a metalhead much later but this band is up there on the list of the earliest music memories I made so I feel like they've always been with me. Initially I was more into the 80's stuff but as I got older the 70's stuff really speaks to me more now. Screaming for Vengeance will always be a favorite though. Yeah, Turbo still does almost not for me but I think it's more redeemable than Demolition or Nostradamus at least.

    That Live in London performance is criminally underrated and under appreciated. I got into Priest because of Demolition and the rest is history. Ripper Owens saved them while Rob left to do fight and two.

    Good lists, guys.
    I first discovered Priest in 1978 with Hellbent For Leather.
    Loved it.
    I gotta slightly disagree on Tim Ripper Owens, although Jugulator and demolition steaming piles of doo doo, I thought Owens was an awesome singer. I think he was in between a rock and a hard place when accepted the offer to fill some huge shoes. I think he did the best he could with what the other members of the band wanted from him.
    They wanted Halford and that's what I think Ripper gave them.
    There are a few JP albums I skipped in the 90's cuz I was mainly into Death Metal and had left behind the classic Metal until the early 2000's and came back into the JP fold.
    In short, Best JP album is Stained Class and the worst is Turbo.
    Lotsa ups and down with Judas Priest but mostly ups, thankfully.
    They do belong on the Mount Rushmore of Metal.
    Oh..
    Their best sounding album?
    Unleashed In The East.
    Yeah I know, lotsa studio trickery abounds on that album, but that guitar tone on that record is the chef's kiss of guitar tones.
    So nasty and full of Metal goodness.
    I know, It's not a studio album.
    But gosh darnit, guys...THAT TONE.
    My god..
    Ok I'm done.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of Ripper. I think he has his moments but in the studio he over relies on effects and filters and I don't like his "yarl & wail" combo. I do agree that his was in a tough position with trying to win over fans and fill the shoes of a legend. That was always going to be an uphill battle. I totally agree with you that Stained Class is their best. The top 6 I had were all in a running for that #1 spot but Stained Class just has everything that I love about the band on it. I still don't own Unleashed in the East just because I don't really go for live albums. Granted, it's not really a live album technically but it's just a thing I have. I may pick that one up one day though since I know it gets a ton of love.

      Necrotic Nick- Yeah, this band goes all the way back to my childhood so this was a fun nostalgic trip for me. British Steel is a definite banger (outside of United) and I think Shred brought up Patrick Lachman playing in Halford's band in our Damageplan retro review but I didn't know that until just before they shot that one.
