Murders in the Rue Morgue was my introduction to Maiden and is one of my all time favorite songs.
I used to record off the radio to cassette, like everyone, and the station played a 3-song set from a recent Maiden concert, sort of introducing the band to many of us. I got Wrathchild, Murders in the Rue Morgue, and Killers, all live. Played that cassette until it died and cannot believe those live tracks are lost to me forever.

    • @Maximillian200HP
      @Maximillian200HP Před 3 lety +1

@Joe Metal Head I say it's overrated because I see a lot of people hype it up, but to me if I wanna listen to a Maiden album, it'd be one of the last ones to pop into my head. Aside from the last 3 tracks, none of that album really makes an impression with me, but that's just me. My two favorite Maiden albums are Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son which makes me a bit of an oddball compared to most fans.

@Joe Metal Head Damn FotD and HbtN, I can't stand those songs.
Ok, FotD was the first I heard but it was in... 1992. So overplayed in concert.

    • @francoisjus
      @francoisjus Před 3 lety

@Joe Metal Head You got that right, mate. 1990-1998 = RIP Maiden, boring tunes.
But as we discovered Maiden at different times, our thoughts are pretty different.
SiT is the first album I bought, back in 1993. And I still think it is brilliant, just like SSoaSS. Just as IM-->aforementioned album.
7 awesome records in a row (not counting LaD).
And yeah, BNW is a fantastic album, no denying.
Sorry, DoD and TFF are not on par with BNW, AMoLaD and TBoS.

    3 - Purgatory (Killers) - proto-thrash at its finest
4 - Judgment of Heaven (X-Factor) - The Blaze era was a different thing, but the lyrics/message of this song make it a personal favorite
5 - Mission From Harry (bonus track from re-issues) - Not even a song, but it is just hilarious. Provides a big dose of unexpected comedy that would make Spinal Tap themselves take notice. I still enjoy it. “It’s not fair to relay a message to people …"

I would add - Back in the Village, The Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Still Life & as Chris mentioned -Murders in the Rue Morgue - classic!!

For Chris Alo: the early songs he selected, such as Prowler and Murders in the Rue Morgue, were played very frequently between 1980 and 1983. I have a few bootlegs and, circa 1981/1982, Iron Maiden played their first two albums in also their entirety in the same concert.

Iron Maiden is and has been my all time favorite band for over thirty years. Hallowed Be Thy Name was the first song I ever listened to by Iron Maiden back in the mid 80's at barely 8 years old. Iron Maiden have many deep cuts that are amazing songs and I wish that they would play more of them in the future. Some of my favorite deep cuts are Charlotte The Harlot, Purgatory, Another Life, Prowler, To Tame A Land, Still Life, 22 Acacia Ave., Total Eclipse, Strange World, Prodigal Son, Back In The Village, Flash Of The Blade, The Duelists, Twilight Zone, Caught Somewhere In Time, Sea Of Madness, The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, Deja Vu, Infinite Dreams, Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, The Prophecy, Only The Good Die Young, Mother Russia, The Edge Of Darkness, Como Estais Amigos, Ghost Of The Navigator, The Thin Line Between Love And Hate, The Nomad, Journeyman, The Legacy, The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg, The Talisman, When The Wild Wind Blows, and Empire Of The Clouds. I do know that some of these songs have been played live, but very rarely. I would love if Iron Maiden did a tour of deep cut songs. The hardcore Iron Maiden fans like myself would definitely go see Iron Maiden on that tour easily. UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to avoid anything from the 80s because at this point, these albums are just classics and they're all so good. Plus I think there more newer stuff often gets overlooked even by some of the biggest Maiden fans.
    1. Passchendaele, Dance Of Death (2003)
    2. Blood Brothers, Brave New World (2000)
    3. The Longest Day, A Matter Of Life And Death (2006)
    4. The Man Who Would Be King, The Final Frontier (2010)

Some suggestions - I used the criteria that the song could a) not be a single, b) not on any greatest hits album, c) not played for 20 years (if at all) OR not played again after the initial tour to support the album (in the case of more recent songs).
    These songs all qualified
    1. Prodigal Son (Killers)
    2. Still Life (Piece of Mind)
    3. Sea of Madness (SIT)
    4. Run Silent Run Deep (No Prayer)
    5. Fear is the Key (FOTD)
    6. The Educated Fool (Virtual X1)
    7. Como Estais Amigos (Virtual X1)
    8. Montségur (Dance)
    9. The Longest Day (AMOLAD)
10 Isle of Avalon (Final Frontier)
Personally I'd love to hear any one of these live. Appreciate the Blaze ones don't appear in too many wish lists, but I think these two are very strong songs

Had a very busy day but was looking forward to tuning in to Sea of Tranquility, you know, to end the day properly, and what a wonderful surprise to see a Maiden episode! Great tracks picked by both. I would say that most of the songs from Blaze's era could be called deep cuts now, and for me, mainly: Sign of the Cross (sung masterfully by Bruce in the Rock in Rio DVD) and When Two Worlds Collide, I absolutely love that song. From Bruce's era, I love another deep cut that I see a lot have mentioned in the comments: Judas Be My Guide, 3:09 minutes of really scorching Maiden, I always thought that song would have worked amazing in a concert. But, as you guys said, the hits will be the hits and everyone wants to hear them. Honestly, Maiden is my absolute favorite and have had the opportunity to see them live only once (hugging with my friends and a bunch of new friends we made in the 10 hours we stood in line), crying our eyes out from the excitement of listening to all the hits we all know and love.

Welcome back, Chris Alo. My list contains two from a couple of albums, with nothing from a couple of three albums. From what I remember in the set lists, three albums get a lot of attention in the live circuit. After dropping those, the list is:
"Strange World" and "Remember Tomorrow" from Iron Maiden
    "Prodigal Son" from Killers
"To Tame and Land" and "Still Life" from Piece of Mind
"Heaven Can Wait" from Somewhere in Time
"When Two Worlds Collide" from Virtual XI
"The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" and "The Legacy" from A Matter of Life and Death (Full of deep cuts)
"The Thin Line Between Love and Hate" and "Dream of Mirrors" from Brave New World
"Journeyman" and "Faces in the Sand" from Dance of Death (There could be more)
"Afraid to Shoot Strangers" from Fear of the Dark
"Starblind" and "Isle of Avalon" from The Final Frontier (Others, too)
"The Edge of Darkness" from The X Factor
"Man of Sorrows" and "The Great Unknown" from Book of Souls (Everything here is a deep cut)
My foray into heavy metal began with Iron Maiden through Ayreon's Universal Migrator, Pt 2 and the song "Into the Black Hole". From there I delved into the music of progressive metal, starting with Brave New World. I've been a fan since. The band's writing took a turn toward the "progressive" here--and though some of the songs on the latter albums require more attention, the writing represents some of the strongest they've had in the career of the band. Though his voice is not what it used to be his vocals still pack a significant punch. The musicianship remains stellar--with killer solos and loads of atmosphere and attitude.

A deep cut dive on Iron Maiden is a delightful enterprise in and of itself. The exercise takes you down a fantastic wormhole into one of greatest bands in the history of metal music. My list is going to be songs that weren't only deep cuts for the sake of pulling out something obscure that people should give a listen. I'm going for songs that caught my ear from the first time I heard them and have stayed favorites of mine despite the lack of attention they get from the casual fans. The only other caveat I'm going to throw in there is, Maiden play more deep cuts live than most bands so, I'm not going to observe that "rule" on this list.
    5) The Prophecy ~ 7th Son of a 7th Son
    4) Dream of Mirrors ~ Brave New World
    3) Face In The Sand ~ Dance Of Death
    3) The Legacy ~ A Matter Of Life And Death
    2) Back In The Village ~ Powerslave
    1) Transylvania ~ Iron Maiden
HM: For anyone who hasn't given any of the new Maiden albums a fair shake, try No More Lies, Paschendale, The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, Blood Brothers and The Wicker Man. You're really missing out on an incredible part of their musical legacy without the albums they've released in the last twenty years. These albums are worthy of their place in the catalog. They're much better than No Prayer For The Dying, Fear Of The Dark, Virtual X and The X Factor. I have some of them ranked over albums like Killers and Somewhere In Time too. To be fair. All Dickenson Maiden albums are great and Paul DiAnno's era was fantastic as well. Blaze's tenure didn't resonate with me but, it wasn't necessarily bad. It just wasn't Maiden to me. Without Bruce and Adrian it felt a little off. Maybe a little forced. Bruce is an iconic front man and his presence carries some serious gravitas. It's significantly noticeable in the rest of the player's performances when he's on board.

Iron Maiden is a top 10 band for me, if not top 5. The leaders of the NWOBHM which defined what true Metal is. Not much I can say about them that hasn't already been said. They are legends.
