I strongly concur with this idea. All three must be protected!!!
In fact, were I KING OF THE WORLD, I would have assigned to Simon, Steve & Pete at least two Delta operators each or perhaps several Moussad people...still...I might pick several of those dudes with the colourful outfits who guard the Pope (I'd have to research).

... because one never knows when John Parr draws near (think: Charles Bronson circa 1975 or another variety of stalking predator). First you might see in a flash: that exquisitely menacing Parr-mullet or perhaps a well-produced guitar-lick might twist into existence and then -- BAM! It's too late and another horrible, bloody death ensues!
Yes, gentlemen, John Parr is at once talented and deadly (hence the reason why Simon heroically seeks to apprehend him).😀

Another fantastic show gentlemen. I don't usually comment on this (or any other) channels but the quality of the programs Pete and his guests have been putting out over the the last few years has really been superb. It was around the first lockdown that I began watching this channel and it's been a source of both comfort and inspiration during that time. When I began watching I lived in England and now I live in Scotland - not too far from Mr Reid. Much has changed for me but the constant has been this channel. So much effort goes into it and I wanted you all to know, and particularly Pete, that it is really appreciated. A few comments on today's show if I may:
Steven - I completely identify with you on No Prayer for the Dying. We're the same age so I imagine we had similar expectations after 7th Son - that was the album that really cemented my love of Maiden and is still my favourite today. I was so gutted when I heard NPFTD - the whole number 1 thing with Bring Your Daughter was just cringe-worthy. I remember the time well because around 6 months later, Marillion released Holidays In Eden and it was as if my two favourite bands had decided to drop two giant turds on me.
And to both Simon and Pete, big respect for mentioning Senjutsu. I love that album and for me it is the best thing they've done since 1988. Which is a big statement I guess but for me it is the culmination of what they've been trying to do for the last 20 years and this time they've completely nailed it.
Finally, I'm looking forward to the next episode of 4FusionFriday - that was a fascinating discussion the other day. Keep up the great work guys. Slainte.
    .

Thanks for that Nick. Great to hear you enjoyed the show - and I can only echo your thoughts regarding Peter and the fantastic channel he has created.
I like Holidays In Eden, but I know what you mean, after Season's End it was quite a come down - although not as big as 7th Son to No Prayer for me.
I hope Bonnie Scotland is treating you well!

Here's one for you. Do you remember, or have you ever come across the group, The Lost Soul Band? From Penicuik in the early 90's? Outwith my circle of friends, I've yet to come across anyone else who has heard of them. But their music still holds up really well today I think.

Favorites: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Somewhere in Time
Least favorites: Fear of the Dark and Virtual XI
Wildcard: It's so hard to pick just one, but I'm gonna go with A Matter of Life and Death. I don't care what people say, I absolutely adore that record. The songs are long, but very rarely do they lose my attention like some of the later records do. The album is also super heavy. Maiden isn't exactly a heavy band, but I think it's safe to say they've never done a record heavier than AMOLAD.
Also, I agree with everything Steven said about The X Factor. It's a very good album. Probably the most underappreciated in the whole Maiden catalog.

💯 on Seventh Son as my #1… it was one of the first, maybe the first, intros that I got to serious/trve metal, vs the hair or neu metal I’d heard upto that point as a teen (not to say those are all bad, just not trve), and it blew my mind. That beast made me an instant and permanent fan of the band, and kickstarted my getting much deeper into the history of metal, and opened me up to exploring music deeper, in general.

There’s something about that album that works. I think it’s their 8th masterpiece. I put it up there with the first seven although it’s by far the most different from the rest. Thank you for Maiden Japan. I knew one of you guys would pick this as your “wild card”.
Maiden Japan was my first Iron Maiden record. There was a front rack display just prior to the release of Number of the Beast (I imagine as pre p-release hype) and my 11 year old self was of course drawn to the cover art of the first LP and Killers. Also my 11 year old self could only afford the discount priced live EP, and boy I was not disappointed. I quickly sequestered my allowance/paper route money to get the studio albums. Maiden Japan holds a huge place in my heart.
It’s kind of like with Doctor Who; everyone has their “first Doctor” that introduced them to the franchise and becomes special to them no matter how much they like subsequent doctors. Maiden Japan and Paul Di’Anno Maiden is my “first Doctor”, my Tom Baker.

Depending on the day, I could take any 2 of the first 4 albums as my favourites. The last 2 are carved in stone.
    1. The Number of the Beast - Apart from Gangland and Invaders only great songs. With Hallowed, Children and 22 Acacia Ave three alltime classics
    2. Brave New World - No bad song on the album. Back on 80s level.
    3. Seventh Son - Maiden in perfection
    4. Iron Maiden - true classic, one of the debuts of all time
    5. Somewhere in Time - yes, there are synths. But still a great album with the best artwork by the band
    6. Senjutsu - sorry, but I love the album. "Writing on the wall", "Lost in a lost World", "Darkest Hour", "Parchment" and "Hell on Earth" would be on my Top songs list.
    7. Powerslave - Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Aces High, any questions?
    8. The Book of Souls - Maiden back to form
    9. Piece of Mind - Ups and downs for me. First 5 songs are great, but the rest is mediocre
    10. Dance of Death - uuuugly cover. Paschendale is great, rest is good to ok.
    11. Fear of the Dark - would be lower without the title track and Afraid to shoot strangers
    12. X Factor - revisiting the album, it is better than expected.
    13. Killers - I know... but I don't get into it, although I love the debut.
    14. A Matter of Live and death - Not too bad
    15. The Final Frontier - won't hurt, but won't impress either
    16. No Prayer for the dying - The 90s weren't Maiden's best decade
    17. Virtual XI - No Comment

I could never really understood the dislike for those two Beast tracks, in my opinion they're great and just as typical Maiden as anything else on the record, instead the one that would stick out more for me is "22 Acacia Avenue" which again is many people's fav. Different strokes, as they say.

  • @mattshaw5179

Great video gents!! This was unbelievably hard!! But here we go...
Top two for me have to be Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and Killers. I don't think I could have chosen two more different Iron Maiden albums, but these are the two I go back to the most, both absolute classics.
I thought the bottom two would be easy, but actually it was harder than choosing the top ones because all the albums have at least something I like about them. After much deliberation I decided on Virtual XI and No Prayer For the Dying. They're both just so boring, they sound like contractual obligation albums to me.
My wildcard is X Factor, not amazing but some really good songs. I love Blaze, I really liked Wolfsbane, they're are one of those bands that no-one I knew had heard of in the early nineties but I thought were great, and I saw them for the first time on this tour and it was fantastic!!

Least favorites (among the LP's that I own...I must concede I only own 9 or 10 albums...) FEAR OF THE DARK (despite the title track being pretty good-ish, especially LIVE...) & BOOK OF SOULS.
Wildcard: For my wildcard I might be cheating a little bit. I LOVE -- ABSOLUTELY LOVE -- the double live album from circa 2007 called FLIGHT 666!!!
And, BTW, for anyone who happens to read this: that live double album is a great way to introduce the best of Iron Maiden to someone unfamiliar with their work. It's primarily focused upon material from the mid-80's when, arguably, the band were at the height of their powers.

Another great show. This is the most difficult one for me as Maiden are my favourite band ever. I first started listening to them as a kid in the mid 80's because my Dad had the records at the time and i loved the covers. My top 2 could be anything really between the first album and "Seventh Son.." but i would probably go with "Powerslave", then "Somewhere In Time". I think "The Duellists" is one of their best songs. Those twin guitar parts in the middle are just AAARGHHHHHHHHH :P So fecking good. Worst albums for me would have to be "Virtual XI" and in all honesty, anything after "Brave New World". I'm not much of a fan of "X Factor" but i could forgive that as it was the first Blaze album and i thought he may get better. He didn't. I remember going to the Barrowlands to see them that night and feeling it was sad how they were playing such small venues. I haven't actually seen them live since they did the whole "A Matter Of Life And Death" album years ago. I was absolutely bored shitless.
The last handful of albums after "Brave New World" all seem to mesh into one another for me. There's hardly anything exciting about them. None particularly stand out from the others. As Simon also said, they get the same response from me each time they come out. They just kinda wash over you. They sound too similar, are too long and nothing sounds inspired anymore. It's all the same chord progressions...C to D to E, etc. Saying that, i'm kinda enjoying bits of "Senjutsu".
I also agree with Steven regarding "Mother Russia". That song is just plain awful and "Holy Smoke" is a steaming pile of fresh dog shit, hahaha.
Regarding a surprise goodie, i would go with "Best Of The B-Sides", purely because i love the period around "Piece Of Mind" and "Powerslave" when they released songs like "Cross-Eyed Mary" and "Rainbow's Gold". Sadly their b-sides in later years got a bit crap but those ones were great. Still my favourite band ever though. I just refuse to pay much attention to their 21st century stuff.
Another fun show folks. Look forward to the next one tonight :D

I never bothered with the "Virtual XI" tour. Thing is, I don't dislike Blaze. He seems like a nice guy and Wolfsbane had some good moments. A bit like a Wish version of Van Halen at times but good fun at the same time. He just wasn't a strong enough vocalist for such a huge band.
I'm sure My Dying Bride were meant to support them that night but for some reason they never appeared or we got there too late to see them. I forget.
