    A little Uli Jon Roth story.
    Not far from where I live is a place called Warings Green in Solihull near Birmingham UK. There is a country pub called The Bluebell Cider House that has open mic nights. One of the patrons knew UJR and got him to play at one of these that took place outside on a balmy late summer evening.
    It was surreal but totally brilliant sat there with about 50 other people listening to him play a 45 minute acoustic set and better still it was free.

    The first time I heard SCORPIONS was when my older brother came home on leave from the Army in 1981 and brought with him a bunch of albums and two were Tokyo Tapes and Castle Donnington! I immediately loved them and wanted more and startred buying everything! I fell off after Savage Amusement, and I honestly can't get into the newer stuff, Rock Believer I've listened to it twice and liked it but I haven't spun it since. I like Pure Instinct. It might actually be the album that's the least edgy, but like you said- it still riffs. For the bad rep it gets it rocks pretty hard, dare I say- heavier than Bon Jovi? Certainly offering more than something like Oasis, or other popular bands at the time. Incredible lead guitar for a mid 90's album, as well. You and I might have one of the best outros Matthias has done since Coming Home. Does Anyone Know is obviously supposed to appeal in the same way that Wind of Change does, but there's something different going on with a lot of the others. There's a slight folk presence maybe on Time Will Call Your Name and Soul Behind the Face. For some reason these get me thinking of something like Styx's Cornerstone, where you had something like Never Say Never (which you'd think is throwaway but is actually quite unusual, which differentiates it from a standard ballad), mixed in with an actual folk song like Boat on the River. Then you hear Babe which is the actual commercial ballad and it stands out as being the only really awful song among a bunch that are trying to do something different. I've got no problem throwing Wild Child and some of the other rockers on a same playlist as the ones from other albums. I revisited this album to make sure some of these really weren't that bad and I can still have another go at it and not get pissed off. Granted, Eye to Eye failed to do the same when I heard those edm drums. I can stomach a number of the songs, but the bad ones in between are revolting. Yellow Butterfly, Mind Like a Tree, Skywriter, Aleyah, Obsession and 10 Light Years Away are ok by themselves. Still 19th if I had to rank the album, though.

  • @gabriellarrubia1006
    @gabriellarrubia1006 Před 2 lety +9

    My top 2 favorites are Animal Magnetism and Blackout. Matthias goes bonkers on Blackout, and even when it goes slow it has my attention. Animal Magnetism just has way too many of my top 10/20 favorite songs even if deep down I wish it was more intense like Blackout. Dark, heavy album, though. Side two puts on a clinic. My least favorites are Eye to Eye and Unbreakable. I found redeemable material on both, but even the 17th best album seems miles ahead of these. My wild card is Savage Amusement (kinda cheating because it's my third favorite)- WAY too underrated in my opinion. Commercial? Maybe. Doesn't bother me. The opener is quite decent. Passion Rules the Game is gorgeous, and Rhythm of Love does have the groove that it says it does. I like that the talk box gets another shot in Media Overkill (after The Zoo this is fan service). The ballads have their moments, sound honest and can jump at you from nowhere (Walking on the Edge has that bit, people might know what I'm talking about). Then there's the deep cuts. There's some heavy, fast shit on this record that's maybe not being accounted for. In fact, if you flip things to put those up front, it's probably not that poppy. Great performance from Matthias, and interesting double rhythm guitar all throughout (Passion Rules the Game has great layering, for example). The production is also kinda fascinating. I hear things popping in and out in stereo like fireworks- almost as if the production is giving the music more motion. For a band that likes to dub things, have many guitar fills and spontaneous harmonics all around, it's a nice way to add color.

    Fav s- Lovedrive & Taken By Force
    Least fav - Pure Instinct and Eye to Eye
    Wildcards - Lonesome Crow and Rock Believer
    I totally agree with Steven that Tokyo Tapes & World Wide live are the two absolutely essential Scorpions albums and while my Twitter response last week had them as my wildcards, considering that the wild card should be one that isn't their greatest I have changed my mind and although I initially decided to just go with Lonesome Crow will mirror Pete and add Rock Believer - not that I have a physical copy though , as I dont, and my fruity download is just fine.
    I also tweeted that as I had been re-listening to Scorpions (I so want to say 'the' in front of Scorpions as it just doesn't sound right without it ) over the last few weeks after the remarks made by Chris Alo about Alien Nation decided to recheck their 90's stuff - as I never listen to it. Crazy World & Face the Heat were ok though downward trending, then off the cliff they went, badly, but they did recover bit by bit - and then I went on to say about Humanity Hour "Have to say I dismissed it shortly after buying but on re-listening it is far far better than first thought and I'd now give it a good 7 or 8/10 at least" - that was however in response to someone who had Humanity Hour as one of their favourites so its probably them that Steven was referring to as supporting his view.
    My first two Scorps albums were Lovedrive and Tokyo Tapes bought at the same time, so I was already exposed to both eras, which means for me Lovedrive gets the nod due to my relationship with it (not mention that it has both Jabs and Schenker, Michael on it). Not long after I bought them I saw Scorpions at Reading Rock - they were just awesome. Then I bought Taken by Force, so again I have a longstanding relationship with that one.
    If I were to rank their albums though, Tokyo Tapes would be at no 1 and WorldWide Live at No 2 then for studio releases 1. Lovedrive 2. Taken by Force 3. Blackout 4. Virgin Killer 5. Animal Magnetism . 6 Love at First Sting 7. In Trance 8.Fly to the Rainbow 9.Lonesome Crow 10.Rock Believer.
    From '79 through to '85 Scorpions were one of my top five favourite bands. Then they went pffft...
    For my least favourites I disregarded Comeblack because its easy pickings and I very nearly added a third least favourite in Savage Amusement - as after what had come before it was just a big disappointment - Passion Doesnt Rule the Game should have been the title for one of the songs. It was their Hysteria wannabee album and in my opinion failed badly. As with Scorps though there are still maybe one or two songs on it that are ok but it was just dull and lifeless. Crazy World picked things up a bit and Face the Heat I think tried, though is only a smidgen better than Savage Amusement. Incidentally SA is the only Scorps album I never replaced on CD - I had to get Pure Instinct and Eye to Eye on CD as that's all I could get at the time, however until the last couple of weeks I never played them since fist purchase and then re-listened and confirmed my initial thoughts about their crapness - Pure Instinct is just completely lifeless, dull, and has no balls or pizzaz at all and like Steven I doubt I'll ever play either of them again - Humanity Hour I probably will though.

    Had always ignored (tries hard not to say 'the') Scorpions as I only knew them for that whistling shit (that I actually quite like, but not enough to want to hear more) until they played the first Ramblin' Man festival (2015 I believe). Went to check them out for a couple of tunes before moving on to whoever was on the prog stage at that point but ended up staying for the whole set because they were bloody fantastic. Really glad they didn't play the same night as Marillion as I'd have missed them. Anyway, my top 2 are Blackout and Love at First Sting. Don't have a bottom two as I've seen that they have a bunch of shitty albums and have assiduously avoided them, but will give my wildcard choice to Return to Forever (which I think actually WAS them saying, ' that farewell tour was a stupid idea, of course we're keeping on going') - it was the current album when I saw them and they played a few songs from it that went down really well (We Built This House is great for one) and I bought it along with some of the earlier classic stuff. By contrast I've enjoyed Rock Believer, but no so much as long-term fans seem to - that feels like an album for people who actually lived through all the really bad years to have something to finally rejoice about, if that makes sense?

    It's hard to look past Lovedrive as their best studio album, imo. No weak tracks at all, unlike on Animal Magnetism (Lady Starlight? Ugh! Yuck). Next best would be Blackout. My wildcard would be Tokyo Tapes, which is a magnificent live album that captures the power of the Uli Jon Roth era. They would become a very different type of rock band once Matthias Jabs took over permanently, more of a straightforward, commercial type of Hard Rock, as opposed to the sometimes proggy or wistful Rock of the mid-70s. The two worst Scorpions records have to be Eye II Eye and Savage Amusement, though a case could be made for Pure Instinct.

      You probably stopped listening to lady starlight halfway through. The first half of it is not my cup of tea, but the last 2 and a half minutes is a pure gold guitar solo. Almost it's own song. Another entertaining show there, thanks. Several times I heard you guys mention the cringy-ness of some Scorpions lyrics, but I suppose you don´t want to get into that for not wanting to sound too snobby and not wanting to insult the writer(s) (Pete and Martin Popoff also mentioned this in one of their shows) and of course I respect that. However, as a dutch person living in Spain, and obviously not having English as my native language I would really like to know what lyrics are so cringe-worthy to proper English speaking people like yourselves. I hope this show comes up someday, the Scorpions are old and wise enough to get over some critical analyses of their lyrical content. By the way, Scorpions music from the mid seventies to the mid eighties kicks major ass! Cheers.
