      @@denmalski Thing is.. after the first 10 seconds, the 2 songs diverge dramatically and even though the core riff is the same, I will say Maiden did more with it even before diverging. Inspired by? I'm sure. Call it an homage, even, but end of the day "Priest opening for Maiden" kind of sums it up. And if it'd been that huge an issue, one would think that Halford/Priest 1) wouldn't have opened for them (I mean they did have beef in the early 80s from when Maiden opened for Priest, IIRC) and 2) surprised they didn't sue. Especially these days seems all the rage. *shrugs*
      Dang near every band rips a riff off from someone and repurposes it. Hell, Maiden even rips off their own songs on several occasions.

    Love both bands, but I prefer Priest (Priest is a Top 5 favorite, Maiden is a Top 10). Priest has been more versatile, experimental, etc. Priest also helped to define what metal is, sonically and aesthetically, and where it could go. Listening to Priest is a history lesson of the genre. Priest has heavier songs, better ballads, and their music has an immediacy that I think Maiden lacks. I liked Book of Souls, but I don’t think Maiden could produce an album today as vital and visceral as Firepower.

  • @stephenoreilly3226

    You cannot compare first albums, because as you commented, there is almost a decade between them. This is not a comparison between IM and JP, but the evolution of Heavy Metal in the 1970’s. Back in 1974, there was no Heavy Metal sound in existence that resembled IM’s debut album. This would be the equivalent of comparing 1970s muscle cars to todays. We love the old cars, but the new cars have double the horse power. If you want to compare JP’s Roca Rolla to anything, you have to compare it to other albums from 1974 from bands like Deep Purple; Kiss, Budgie, Thin Lizzy, etc. By the time Heavy Metal made it to 1980, the metal scene had evolved into what we saw with IM’s first album. JP came out with amazing albums that made Heavy Metal what it became in 1980. That sound would not exist if not for albums like, Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin after Sin, Stained Class and Killing Machine. So, a fare comparison would be to pit the 2 albums that came out in 1980 against each other. Iron Maiden vs British Steel. And in my humble opinion it would be British Steel all the way.
    I like JP the best. IM for me started out awesome, but in later albums I slowly started losing interest. Priest for me seemed to keep driving ahead. Some bands mellow with age, but not JP. Also, I found that I got my moneys worth with JP. I could lie back and listen to almost any JP album in its entirety and enjoy every single song. I found that hard to do with many other Metal bands including later IM albums. Other bands just seemed to have too many filler songs.
    Final note, I recently saw some amazing videos from KK’s Priest. If you love Judas Priest, check this out. With KK Downing, Ripper Owens and sometimes Less Binks, this is an amazing line up with a blazing new addition to Heavy Metal.

    • @nolifetilmetal1
      @nolifetilmetal1  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks for your well thought out opinions. Totally agree about Priest defining what became heavy metal by 1980. Priest were one of the first wave of British heavy metal bands along with Purple, Sabbath, UFO, Budgie, Rainbow, etc. Maiden were clearly part of the NWOBHM and that sound would not have existed without the first wave bands, as well as bands from around the world like the Scorpions, Thin Lizzy, Kiss, Aerosmith, etc.
      As for comparing the band's first albums we realize that they are not really comparable in terms of style, but it was just a fun comparison, not to be taken too seriously. Just a couple of old metalheads comparing two of their favorite bands.

    • @jocksilver7
      @jocksilver7 Před 3 lety

      Entirely see your point and taking 1974 as a sample, it's even quite musically enlightening to compare RR (through simultaneous listening) with records like Uriah Heep's ''Underworld'', Lizzy's ''Nightlife'' and UFO's ''Phenomenon'', 3 bands I deem as essential to the building of IM's musical backbone. The Wishbone Ash connection is more subtle and prone to hours of debate. Obviously, Purple's ''Burn'' presence in early 74 is so apparently encompassing it also strikes Maiden's sound, though ''Machine Head'' may have had greater influence. Sometimes I think I can even trace down signs of maidenesque inspiration from Spooky Tooth! ...since citing Jethro Tull has turned into quite an understatement of a cliché.

    Maiden and Priest both deserve hails from the metal hordes because without their discographies the 80's would not have been the same and metal as we know it would not have become the monster it did. Not many bands could touch what they did and accomplish as much in their careers as those two bands did. Defenders Of The Faith and Piece Of Mind would be my pick as favorite albums by the bands but I like all their releases to some degree just as anyone should who owns their discographies. Priest by a long shot. My thing with Maiden is that their songs are so obvious- like "here's this historical event, we're going to sing the story of it". Whereas Priest (at least older stuff) wrote more about life in general. I also find priest to be FAR more diverse and musically interesting- Maiden all kind of blends together for me. And Tipton always had a unique way with riffs and solos- plus there's Halford, so yeah. I listened to Maiden in the 80's and saw them a few times, but don't play them anymore- however Priest still gets a lot of rotation.

      I really dont think Priest is more diverse (or at least not substantially so). Maiden's sound has changed several times. The sound of the songs on Senjutsu are nothing like X-factor, which is nothing like Number of the Beast, which is nothing like Killers.
      The obvious thing is also a rather strange claim (even looking at their more simplistic 80s material) since you have such diversity in the subjects.
      As to preference, each to his own, of course. You cant argue taste. Priest is a great band, but they are far more hit and miss to me than Iron Maiden. I think its mostly due to the composition abilities of Steve Harris. Just on a totally different level to me.

  • @EliteSpeakerTitan-OfficalYT

    Both great bands, Sad Wings is a masterpiece, as was Killers. Overall, I give Priest the edge for being versatile. Maiden could never rip your face off with heaviness, then write a beautiful song like Before The Dawn and Angel, Maiden sounds the same album after album.

But then I started hearing the Piece of Mind album some more listening more closely, and I started played the Trooper riff on guitar and was like, okay, this is not bad. Not bad became pretty fun. Pretty fun became pure f*cking awesome, and now I absolutely adore every track on Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind. Perfect albums. And those live performances...holy mother of balls, the whole band, but Bruce especially was an absolute tour de force. When listening to the studio versions I had slight preference for the Dune song (To Tame a Land) over its equally venerable counterpart Hallowed Be Thy Name, but then I listened and saw the live recording of Hallowed from '82 Hammersmith. Man, it sounds even better live than in studio (although some claim it is overdubbed in studio, I don't know).

Priest, on some albums, I think suffered from production issues that prevented their songs from really being what they should. Kind of like early KISS. So album vs album, I can see Iron Maiden winning it. Then again, the breadth and depth of Judas Priest's catalog is incredible and more diverse. Talk about a Sophie's choice.
    What makes me happy is that both bands are still creating music worthy of their names. (Have to admit though, the new Iron Maiden song, reminds me a little of Tommy-era Who. I think it's impossible for me to pick. I do like the later Priest better than Later Maiden, but the early stuff is pretty equal.

    Maiden is always my favorite. I enjoy Di'anno's work in the group, and I love Blaze, I think he gets a raw deal when it comes to his work on "The X-Factor" and "Virtual XI" (his work in Wolfsbane, and Blaze, such as his album earlier this year, is awesome), but Bruce, Steve, and Dave/Adrian pulled me into Maiden! And, oh yeah, Nicko didn't hurt, either. ;)
    As far as my favorite Maiden album...that's really tough because I've been into "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" and "Somewhere in Time" a lot more so lately, but it was "Powerslave" that got me hooked on them first. From "Aces High" and "Two Minutes to Midnight" through "Flash of the Blade", to "Back in the Village" and it's weird riff that reminded me of the NES Batman boss theme song, to the title song, and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"...classic!
    That's not to say that I don't like Judas Priest either, but to be fair, I kind of got away from them up until when Firepower came out in 2018, but I do agree that it rips your face off! My absolute favorite album, though, is Painkiller, what an awesome album, it just felt like an injection of life with new drummer Scott Travis and some of the tracks bordered on the thrash realm.

      @@benjaminmaughan2957 Completely disagree. MOST of Priests albums are not hit and miss. Most are killer. Both bands have albums that aren't as strong as others. I mean you can like Maiden more than Priest. Nothing wrong with that, but to say Priest, who have been around a decade longer than Maiden, hasn't been as consistent as Maiden isn't really correct IMO. Cheers!

    Gotta go with Iron Maiden on this one. They've maintained a consistent sound and a consistent quality for decades that Judas Priest never quite equalled. I'm actively trying to forget Turbo and Ram it Down even happened. Mr. Harris and company have never let me down like that. The only other two bands that I can think of that have delivered that kind of consistency are AC/DC and Creedence Clearwater Revival. And yes, I did just compare Creedence to Iron Maiden. Burn me as a heretic if you will.

    • @nolifetilmetal1
      @nolifetilmetal1  Před 3 lety

      Cool. I can respect that opinion. I don't know that Maiden were always consistent nor do I agree that their quality was always consistent. They both had their ups and downs. For me, I was a fan of Priest before there even was an Iron Maiden and Priest's 70's catalog is untouchable.

    • @kalibhakta8640
      @kalibhakta8640 Před 3 lety

      I discovered both bands around the same time, but Maiden grabbed me harder and sort of galloped off... Srsly, outside of the Blaze Baily albums, of which I prefer not to speak, Iron Maiden just keeps turning it out. Judas Priest I think has had more ups and downs, music quality wise and... I've tried listening to the Ripper stuff and just can't. Also, Iron Maiden scores points in my book because their songs, yeah, even their entire catalog is very easy to bellydance to. Judas Priest has some good danceable tracks (Desert Plains chief among them and most of British Steel) but that relentless groove Steve Harris lays down is just effing irresistable.

    Priest! No other metal band had a fantastic innings like that 76-79 era: Sad Wings, SAS, Stained Class, Killing machine & then Unleashed and still continued from 80 - 84 with 4 smashing albums. Then painkiller happened!

    Comparing Rocka Rolla to the first Maiden album is like Comparing Apples and Oranges!!! there’s a six year space of time between the two.The difference between budgets and producers was a big determining factor on the outcomes of those albums, it’s too bad that Sad wings of destiny wasn’t produced by Roger Glover and on Columbia records when it came out on ovation records in 1976 and then Gull.I would give a fingernail to hear sad wings remixed and remastered on Columbia!Rocka Rolla isn’t even on Apple Music!!!What the ell?????

      Yes, we acknowledged that there was a large gap in time between the debut albums. It was all in good fun, nothing too serious here. That would be cool to hear Roger Glover, or perhaps Martin Birch (if he were still alive) record Sad Wings.
