I just bought my first T yesterday, an Avicularia avicularia. They are between 1-1.5in right now, so I'm assuming they are a juvie. Such a cutie, and I cannot wait for them to grow and let me know what their sex is lmao
Their current hobby is testing all the hidey holes in their wooden centerpiece. I'm excited to see them web up the place when they are fully confident and feeling safe. Big thanks to you and the T community on CZcams for shedding light on this hobby and helping beginners like me join the club. You and Dark Den in particular are very informative and reassuring for those who want to participate in tarantula keeping for the first time, and I think I have a spoiled little spider in the making ♡

There’s only two things about the C. versicolor (and A. avicularia for that matter) that make me personally reluctant to recommend them broadly to new keepers (again, just me personally):
    1) There is just so much misinformation out there about how to keep them, and following that improper husbandry will almost invariably lead to a dead T
    2) It’s much harder to find appropriate enclosures for arboreal tarantulas (on a slight tangent, I’d actually bet that the majority of A. avicularia bought from big chain pet stores end up being kept in kritter keepers with hugely insufficient vertical space); there are simply more options for terrestrial Ts, and fewer bad/terrible ones (unlike the arboreal T in a kritter keeper example)
Granted, I’ve known people who started out with old worlds for their first Ts completely without issue, so I very well can’t say that calling a C. versicolor a beginner T is wrong. Also, at a certain point you’ve got to draw the line and assume some level of responsibility on the side of the owner (for some people, there is no appropriate beginner T, because they just shouldn’t be owning tarantulas!).
I think it all depends on the person: how much research they’re willing to do, their level of dedication, etc.

Hopefully you have some newer videos I can check out but this is awesome dude. I don’t care what it is, when I see someone talk about something they love with this passion I can’t stop watching.

Got a brachypelma boehmei for my first tarantula, and she's been incredibly cool. (My parents were horrified when I brought her home, but now they often come over just to see what she's up to. Lol.) She's a moody eater but fairly easy to handle, rarely kicks hairs, and loves posing for the camera! I've been watching your videos for a few months now and I love your content - especially how awesome your zoo looks. Sending love all the way from Indonesia :)

Glad you mentioned the Aphonopelma chalcodes beforehand! It seems like I never used to hear about them, but then all of a sudden everyone started singing their praises, and for good reason! I picked up my first sling about three or four years ago, and she’s still one of my favorites, even after picking up some more brightly colored T’s later on. A slow grower, but completely worth the wait! It’s insane to think that she’s just now starting to look like a genuine tarantula, while my Chromatopelma cyanopubescens and Brachypelma boehmei both started to shoot up in size nearly right away!

My very first T was the Caribena Versicolor, I agree that this is a great beginner. Back then it was also considered an Avicularia so he was housed as a typical Avi. We got him as a very tiny sling and it was amazing watching him develop into an adult with all of the color changes and everything. Unfortunately, being a male, we didn't have him as long as we would have liked but I don't regret it, he was a sweetheart and this was the beginning of my T fascination. I would definitely recommend. ♥ What a great video, I am really interested in the Pumpkin Patch T, have to see if it is available here in Germany...

This has been so useful (along with your other videos). I'm on the hunt (ironic term there) for my first T and your number 1 is exactly the kind of spider I'm looking for...been looking and the obvious Mex Red Knee as that was my first (very positive) experience has been my initial choice. But have been leaning towards the Mex Red Leg (not on most lists). I have been offered a Pink Toe but one that is prone to throwing out urticating hairs so a bit wary...think I'm going to hold out for the Mexican Red Leg or an Antilles Pink Toe...willing to wait and spend the money on the right variety

Thank you for including dwarf species. They're so much better than most give credit to. Though 99% sure you've got one, the A. hentzi is another highly overlooked and imho one of the best beginners for anyone who is patient. :D

SUCH a prideful moment in myself and my best friend who pre ordered my Caribena Versicolor as my first self-kept T. I would LOVE a video (if you haven’t already made one) on your specific care for this beauty. You did mention it’s very similar to its cousin, but I am curious if there’s anything you’ve noted as far as big differences. :) thanks for your educational videos!

Great list! In my opinion the A.seemanni is the best beginner, mine is such a sweetheart and easy to keep! The only downside I’d say would be mine really and I mean REALLY loves water so the habitat needs to stay humid and he/she will come running to sit under the water stream.😆 thanks for shining some light on some of the more overlooked species!😁🕷
