    Dear Dark Den master,
    I have been coping with arachnophobia for my whole life and only a year ago, I decided to start solving the problem. I am happy to say that as for today, I live together with 2 small house spiders. They have their networks of webs freely in the house and I manage to co-exist with them, even feed them tiny insects from time to time... crazy network architects they are.
    But looking into the future, I really wish to have a tarantula with a proper enclosure and stuff at one point (that point is definitely not YET!). I still have a ton to learn about those amazing creatures but was wondering if you could spare a minute to maybe guide me in the right direction a bit. Namely, there are sooooo many species out there and me being a recovering phobic and a newbie, would like to know your ideas on the exact species which would be the most "calm" and slow, "boring" type. Surely I will be keeping my distance from the old world guys.
    Hope you find the time to respond and thank you for the amazing content! Discovering your content was actually the final push I needed to start dealing with the phobia-issue and to face the problem head-on. Thanks again! =)

      I used to gag trying to apply mascara because my eyelashes were too similar to spider legs. I'm better now, even held a tarantula once, but I still fear the smaller ones. Good for you, and the others who responded to you. There's a lot of us on these tarantula keeping chanels, working through our fear. Thanks to all the keepers helping us out!

    • @funsize69
      @funsize69 Před 3 lety +6

      Honestly the calmest and most boring ones are some of the brachypelma/tiltocatl, but I don't rlly find them beginner friendly, cuz they are,,, so,,,, boring. They barely grow, they often go on feeding strikes for long times. Like, half a year easy, same with grammostola pulcher. The sweetest pet rocks, but slow grower. It rlly depends on you, whether you want to get an adult or a sling. While adults might be calmer, a sling forces you to grow along with it, and for me, it's just a different bond. Watching this tiny fragile thing grow up to be healthy, big and beautiful, while under your care and responsibility is the best thing about the hobby to me. My first was a lasiodora parahybana, hardy, great eater (even if it may be intimidating at first, it's the most fun part besides molting) and fast grower and as an adult, she's absolutely sweet, hard to startle and when you do, she just hides. I own a few p. Machala, stunning males, fast growers, great eaters and even as a sling, pretty calm, never hide, no bolts. You might wanna check them out too.

    "Some of them are a tiny, tiny bit too big for their enclosures.." Second tarantula is 2/3 the size of the entire floor space. This doesn't just happen overnight, it takes time for them to grow. You don't just open the enclosure one day after not seeing them for a week or two and find them enormous all of a sudden. There really is no excuse for letting them get that big before moving them into a larger space.

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke Před 3 lety +8

      @@wanderingsurf2842 it's because he has too many of them and not enough time. Same goes for the aggressive feeding responses, they're not fed as often as they'd like and as a result they give "great" takedown clips. He keeps adding to his collection as though they're not living things that need to be taken care of. It's VERY disappointing, but at least it's not just me noticing these things anymore.

    • @TheDarkDen
      @TheDarkDen  Před 3 lety +16

      You better not see how majority of people with bigger collection keep them. They don't really benefit from bigger enclosure, it's more for our perception, don't forget that they live in narrow burrows in nature that they never leave if there's enough food.
