Reunited with My Favorite Fish After 2 Years

- While I've been making the 180 gallon aquarium, this moment has been in the back of my mind the entire time. I've been patiently awaiting the day that Maxwell would swim into new waters. Although I made the tank for all my fish, it was built largely with him in mind. In fact, my plans were much different when I still had the silver dollars, but after they passed, this project morphed into what it has become. That said, it still has to grow and my long-term vision is not yet fully realized, but I like how it’s progressed. What do you think?

Knifefish are just so interesting to me and, without a doubt, my favorite. Their elusive and bizarre behaviors are unmatched, in my opinion. What’s your favorite fish and why? I hope you all enjoyed the saga of this tank. It’s been an awesome experience and I’m excited to see how it establishes. I hope you all enjoy the video and have a great weekend SerpaSquad!
Most definitely! One of my dream fish are Hypopygus cf. lepturus they are one of the smallest knife fish and best part they are communal!
For me, every kind of fish is my favorite, but my most favorite one is Betta fish, yea I know its very common, but Betta fish is my first ever fish in my entire life. I still remember the time when my Dad bought me a Betta fish, I loved her so much, but sadly she died due to old age, I'll always remembers you my loved one😁❤
Definitely angelfish although they can be aggressive I found if you raise them with smaller fish like rummy or they don’t eat them and with enough cover and space
I love reed fish! They are so cute and have really fun personalities! Mine were super excited for feeding time and were always out and about! Very sneaky jumpers though 😂
I used to own one! They're really cool
It was pretty funny hearing Serpa get frustrated with the jumping fish, considering how calm his voiceovers always are!
I didn't think he could be angry
It is quite frustrating to find your fish dried up and dead on the floor. Happened to me many years ago too.
😢😢😢@@poochiew.9302
That went on for at least a half hour! One can only keep their cool for so long lol
Lmao
Thank you for being honest and open about fish sometimes getting sick or end up passing away. I tend to feel like a "bad fishkeeper" when things like that happens and I've thought about quitting the hobby multiple times because of this.
But loss is apart of life even when it hurts. And maybe it's okay that it's a part of this hobby too sometimes.
Thanks for saying this. It helps me a lot, too.
Life can be fragile. Do this for long enough and something will go wrong eventually.
When I bought my first Ancistrus breeding pair, the male didn’t want to leave a crevice in large piece of wood and so the guy I got them from took a pair of pliers and took the wood apart so he could get the pleco out.
It would have fit into the bucket I brought and I even offered to pay him extra for the piece of wood, but he said that we won’t submit to a fish.
That was a weird experience, especially since I was 15 and he was a random 70-year old man I had just met, but I still have the fish and they have produced a ton of offspring over the years.
And over time I even became friends with the breeder. He was a choleric and a chainsmoker, but he also was one of the best fish breeders I ever met.
The guy casually bred fish that most people considered to be near impossible to breed intentionally.
He once said that you just have to think like a fish and then everything will come naturally to you.
Rip Karl, you truly did think like a fish.
I shall raise a glass to Karl.
The way a knife fish swims is so graceful…like a ribbon in the wind. Wonderful tank.
Right?! It looks effortless
That slime mold footage was fascinating! The fish look great in their new planted tank!
The pleco:serpa!dont leave me here!SERPA!!!!!💀
HELP ME
Whoever named the species nailed it
Which one?
They are ghostly indeed.
@@tucker8364 Brown ghost knife fish
I kept 2 knife fish a few years ago. My first was a Black Ghost Knife and he was great. Had him for 3 years before unfortunately he was mauled by a green Texas cichlid pair that decided to breed in his cave. The other was a clown knife which although I knew I’d need a tank upgrade from my 120g at some point I had to have him, he was about 5 inches when I got him living in a tiny tank at my lfs. He was offered to me for £5 because no one had showed any interest in him the 7 months he was at the store. I had him 18 months before having to re home him due to my grandad becoming ill (the tank was at my grandparents). In the time he had grown to just under 2 feet long. He ran the tank completely and would come up to me every time I was near the tank begging for food. He went back to the lfs he came from and when he sold he was nearly 27 inches. The best fish I’ve ever kept and if I had the chance to get one again I’d jump at it. Knife fish are amazing
Put the Driftwood in the bathtub and watch closely. The Bristlenose will come out to breathe and you got him. Frankly, I just toss the wood on the floor or in a bucket (if it fits) and the fish comes out on its own. Nice to see the fish back in a happy place, for both them and you. 🙂
That slime mold can be split for a nice treat for some springtails and isopods!! You can feed it all natural steel cut oats to keep it growing!
Sooo do people keep slime mold as a pet?
@@sarahwatts7152 Some people keep anything as a pet lol I have roach colonies, Florida Skunk Roaches, Green Banana Roaches, Lobster Roaches, and Dubia Roaches, then some Isopod amd Springtail Colonies, some globular as well from my front yard, my 3 leopard geckos, then the fish and cat
@@sarahwatts7152 some people will keep anything as a pet lol I know a guy who found a worm snake and dug up a fire amt nest and queen just to feed it lol
I had a knifefish and absolutely loved him, too. Hardly ever saw him but he seemed happy! Unfortunately that tank sprung a leak while we weren’t there and drained leaving the fish nothing and they all passed away. Was pretty upset.
Oh no that's awful 😭
its surreal seeing these fishes after so long lmao… kinda makes me realize how long ive been watching…
You inspired me to make my own channel about terrariums 👍💚🌿
I subbed!
@@silasfoulonThx I appreciate it👍💚🌿
Subbed!
I subbed as well! Looking forward to your next video! 😊
Subbed too dude 🏳️🌈🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Legend says that pleco is still in the Log, refusing to leave
Surely this one will be passed down the generations
I just love it so much more with the fish!
Now the weekend is even better
Tanner’s voice when trying to catch the jumping guys was so funny haha! Jumping fish are always so hard to net 😅
I love seeing how much you, your animals and your tanks have grown over the years. Also, that slime mold was so cool to see!
My dad's favorite freshwater fish that he used to keep was a black knife fish as well❤rest in peace dad, you and I shared a passion for Aquatics and you taught me so much
I could watch a livestream of that tank with that pretty music you picked at the end for hours!
Beautiful tank as always Tanner. Maxwell is stunning! "Darlene, crazy scooter lady at Aquashella"
Ooooh, I’m so glad to see some of the fish back in view! Especially Maxwell the third
Man I love this channel. It educates me and all of Mr. Serpa’s tanks are gorgeous works of art.
Hi Tanner! I just wanted to say thank you for the video every weekend! I've been watching your channel for about four years and got to love it, the animals and the community! Your videos helped me to keep strong in difficult times and I really appreciate that. I have just created a youtube account so I'm now able to finally able to like all of your videos. You have got me started in the aquarium and terrarium hobby with your simple jar terrariums. Now I own two ponds and a few terrariums and managed to start with setting up my first reef tank!
I'm looking forward to all of your future videos. Greetings from Germany.
Awesome to hear my content has enriched your life. Appreciate your support as well. Keep going! 💚
Have you ever thought of a second channel where you post longer form videos of your builds with some music? You could link back to your builds and we could enjoy the creatures and calming scapes you’ve created. Just a thought. (: SerpaDesignTV
I think a few upside down catfish would be really cool in your aquarium with all the ledges & driftwood.
An absolutely wonderful video
Overall this is one amazing tank and you were able to reunite with your fishy friends which was amazing
Hi Serpa! A few years back you did a carnivorous sundew terrarium. Have you ever considered doing a larger bog terrarium with bog plants native to Pennsylvania and Ohio? It would be really cool to see more carnivorous plants showcased on your channel. Especially, pitcher plants! As a fellow midwestern, I would be delighted to see it!
watching your newest video every Saturday morning while eating my breakfast has become part of the schedule
Beautiful tank, i miss having one! Its so relaxing watch a fish tank compared to tv.
This is so beautiful! It's peaceful and natural, so calming I bet. I'm glad Maxwel is doing great!
Thanks for asking Tanner...I love loaches & Puffers & Emerald Green Cory Cats✌🏻
Another beauty Tanner. Congratulations. Love and Peace.
Tank is looking great and slime molds are so incredibly cool! What a neat surprise that is! :D
Thank you for the fishumentary, Tanner. Everyone looks happy in their new home. I like Maxwell's ventral ruffly fin. I remember the first time I saw live flounder at a big aquarium, I was fascinated by how they scoot along the sea floor using the continuous ruffly fin on their perimeter. Nature presents such a rich variety of shapes, colors, ways of movement, and other animal and plant features, you will never run out of wonders in your lifetime. Pink slime mold! How strange and amazing!
I'm so glad you got them in a tank again. I did not realize you were having issues with a broken tank and having to keep the fish in the tub. You did very well managing to keep as many as you did in good health. I feel bad for you for the losses. I love the way you take such good care of all of your room mates. Also, I don't know why you stopped but I miss you saying Peace at the end of your videos. I hope you are having a good day and may peace be with you Tanner. Cindy 11:01
I love your tank design 👏
So beautiful
It was great to learn the story of Maxwell. Beautiful tank. 🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐠🐠🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟 (Gina)
Thank you
Wow the tank looks amazing with the fish 😍 I'd love to have an update on this down the line!
Great, just great. Bless you.
Thanks for making such a beautiful video!
Wow. Congratulations on the smooth move for everyone!
I have a black ghost knifefish in my 125g, has always been and will always be my favorite fish. They are just so cool and personable, so keepers have ever said you can hand feed them.
This! I trained my old one from 16 years ago to hand feed and it was awesome!
that slime is amazing , i would love to have one one day
but i had a freshwatersponge once :)
I'm so excited for the rest of this series!
I had a Laced/Upsidedown catfish in my planted african river tank and they didn't *maliciously* uproot anything but they did bumble through denser plants. I found that only larger anubias (like coffiefolia) on higher rockwork really worked. Taller val species did well(ish) for almost a year but was under constant harassment.
A Serpadesign video and a Dr plants video on the SAME DAY!!?? We are getting fed boys!😌😌😌
Awesome looking tank!!!
I love slime mould ❤
Didn't know that slime mold can be intelligent. But it is mesmerizing to wath it move.
The tank is spectacular.
Yeah and supert efficient! Look up the subway train slime mold experiment very very cool stuff
That's a beautiful place for the fish! If I were a fish I would want to live there, but I haven't seen your Animal Room Tour yet so I might just change my mind. Nonetheless I am sure that I would definitely want to live with you. You really care about your fish as individuals, not just as colourful moving things in a box of water that has a glass wall for you to see them swimming around in until they've become floaters from neglect and have to be well, um, you know, fished out. Sorry.
So I'm now going to watch your Animal Room video of your basement! I can't wait to see the creature's that you've adopted and made such beautiful places for, in which they can live their ideal and happiest lives. I hope that you are all very happy and well-cared for!!!
Wouldn't it be cool to shrink down to about their size and go scuba- ing all around the underwater forests you created and some and play with your fish?! It would be so great to hear a fish's laughter, or a whole school of fish laughing!!!
💜🐠🩵🐠💙🐠💜🐠🩷🐠🧡🐠🤎🐠💛🐠🩷
Cory catfish are some of my favorites. Love your videos!
Looks absolutely beautiful. That knife fish is absolutely stunning
Looking forward to the next video. 😊
gorgeous tank as always!
My last big aquarium was a tall 110 gallon filled about three quarters and housed three red-eared sliders, a huge plecostomous (that grew up with the turtles), cory catfish and speckled cory catfish, and a vast array of mixed guppies. I realized the cory catfish were like the chickens of the community with all the eggs they laid and which the female guppies ate voraciously following the catfish around as they were laying. There were enough eggs to go around though as some did survive to eventually appear cricket sized. That's when the turtles would get interested, but I provided lots of cover for them, so some of them managed to make it to adulthood. It was like National Geographic in my bedroom every day! 😁
Thank you! 🐟
Cool build❤
Trust me
Waited for this this whole week🎉🎉
Amazingly beautiful as usual.
My last community tank had pygmy cories and a gourami, they were my favorites in the tank. The gourami was timid so i hand fed him.
Being in NJ, where we can't cast-net fish, I have a pretty legit net for landing fish. Just tried to look it up, and The Pond Guy has the closest thing to my personal net!
It's so beautiful ❤❤❤❤
I don't have a favorite 🐟🐠 yet. But I prefer the live bearers for now, I hope in the future l can get some other ones.👍👍✨✨💖🙏
My lace catfish does great in my planted tank. Heavily planted and he’s only interested in rock caves and catfish food.
Well done
Keen as for this one legend
So cool!🥰
Corys are so fun. Have you tried Kuhli Loaches? Got a few of them recently and they're amazing. So much personality and energy. And cute little faces. Definitely seems like something you'd enjoy if you haven't kept them before.
I have loved knife fish since my first one over 35 yrs ago!!!
I could not be that calm about a slime mold. I understand they are... natural, but I find them exceptionally creepy. It's the sentience and problem-solving that gets me. I don't want "thinking slime" in my house. :)
Very cool man! Looks great. Silly pleco reminds me of my trigger fish who would love to latch on to live rock
I used to have some Lace Catfish in a planted tank. Key words “used to”. I had to pull them as they matured. When they were small they were “ok”. They were a little messy as they did uproot some of the smaller, less established plants. But as they grew, they became territorial and yes, they were like bulls in a china shop.
when I kept aquariums, black knife ghost fish were my favorites as well. And fire eels. They are awesome fish.
Ahh yeah Fire Eels too! Those are a bucket list fish for me.
@@SerpaDesign highly recommend them. We had one we called wally, even though we were sure he was a she. Wally knew who I was and would come up to the glass and try to interact with me (but couldn't due to the glass). Wally was very observant and would follow us everywhere.
We named her Wally because we had to check she was out to make sure she got something to eat at night when we first got her (where's Wally lol). Eventually she learned dinner time and would be out in a flash.
Lots of personality in them. Sadly when we upgraded her tank something happened and she went missing. As they are escape artists we suspect the change of tank upset her and she escaped the tank. As we have cats and dogs, well, you can imagine what likely happened. We were gutted as she was our favorite and my little friend. Such a shame.
So much personality. You'll love a fire eel I think :)
Amazing
Hopefully we can get an update and Maxwell feeding video in the future Absolutely beautiful tank ❤ Great Job 💯
Beautiful! I was going to say, as you were mentioning adding more fish, that it looks like the Cories are already helping you out there! I have Cories too, so I recognized their breeding behaviour!
We kept our lace catfish in a tank with anubias, java fern and moss that was attached to driftwood. Anything planted in the substrate was pulled up, like the crypts and swords.
Good to know!
New tank looks much better with fish!
Great video.😃😃😃
Maxwell certainly grew up to be such a handsome boy. I guess serpa will have to build a tank around the log for the pleco he doesn’t wanna move out
good luck
Great video BIG DOGGIE 💯👣
You might enjoy skunk botias. Not only will they help control your snail explosion, they actually talk to each other.
Serpa design I love your videos they are so exiting and entertaining any advice for a 13 year ol fish breeder/ fish keeper?
Beautiful fish in an amazing tank. I have a Gymnotus javari myself… one of my favorites!
amazing video, Tanner, it’s incredible to see the fish added back into the tank. Do you think the uprooting would be an issue if the plants are left to establish and root in place for long enough?
Just making my mark before this blows up
Knifefish are my favorites too!
Great video man I hope to one day have my own collection of interesting fish.
I don’t know if you’ve ever owned one but you should get a gulper catfish they’re so funny!
You should make a beginner honey hourami and neon tetra tank
U should definitely try some glass knives then!
just watched dr plants vid and it was crazy to see u there lol great vid btw
Nice
Woahhh🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
