It’s not even a small breed of guppy either, they choose the “elephant ear” which gets like 2.5 inches (6 cm). People need to do more research before they post things online. If it was a male it might be able to swim between the plants but wow…

A super duper good morning FTR crew! Wishing all a radically positive week!
Edit; I am an actual plant mom. Sansevieria may be able to be rooted in the tank, but long term, they don't really like to have wet feet so you'd have trouble keeping it from rotting. It's technically possible, but you'd have to be really careful. Maybe just keep them really high up in the tank so the roots are just barely in the water and as the water level drops they start to dry out. But how the person has them where the actual crown of the plant, the base of the leaves are in the water is going to cause rot for sure. Fun fact; those heavenly bamboo plants people often use in aquaria are also Dracaena!
QotW; I'm Southern California bred, grew up in northern California and now live my dotage back in southern California.

I am betting you can do a coco coir and pumice (or lava rock, LECA, perlite...) pot with about .5-1 cm (1/4-1/2") in the water. Giving a good mix of damp aerated root zone and contact with the water to pull nutrients from. In my experience most plants can be frown hydroponically its just that you are going to kill a bunch before you find out how to do it correctly.

Re: dracaena in a fish tank: I’ve never tried snake plants that way, but I think it SHOULD work. Other dracaena love it-lucky bamboo is a species of dracaena! With snake plants, it’s no so much that they’re succulent in the same way a cactus is; they’re drought tolerant because of their waxy coating, but they don’t swell to store water so they wouldn’t go mushy the way a true succulent does if it gets too much water. Not sure about long-term viability, but I’m sure they’d be happy in there for a while, anyway.

I kept snake plants in water for a long time and they were thriving! Just changed the water every week or two and sometimes added a little bit of fertiliser. So they would do great in a fish tank!

FTR- Its super hard to get a healthy fish in the area I live in, as all pet shops put them in little 5 gallon tanks. The worst one that stopped me from buying any more fish was the centerpiece on the front register of the pet shop- a globe like glass bowl the size of my hand and in it- a Betta fish:'/ I'm saving up for a big aquarium and the rest for when i move away, until then, I have stopped fish keeping.

Just cut a leaf let the cut part dry for a day and plop it into water. It will start sprouting roots soon and will sprout a new shoot from the base of leaf during the growing season.

I have been growing “Snake plants” in passive hydro for many years and they love it. As long as the stems aren’t sitting in the water they won’t melt. Just keep the rhizome and roots in there. Lots more plants than you expect do well in water! I even purchased a dwarf ZZ plant in water and was shocked that it was thriving, considering zz tend to be very sensitive to water. But really plants are adaptable, you just have to take it slowly.

With the snake plants, they can grow from water if the leaves themselves aren't in the water and just the roots it should be fine. I also imagine keeping it standing up is another thing to have to figure out. I always wish I could have plants hanging out of my tank but my weatherloach would find that as an escape hole for sure.

I’m from Los Angeles and have been to the Dallas Aquarium. The aquariums there are amazing, but there are only a few (strangely.) The rest of it is like a sad zoo prison for giant birds, alligators and other exotic tropical animals. It’s similar to the beta in a cup issue…I was highly disappointed. But the few tanks downstairs….are legit.

12:36 - in my 40 gal turtle aquarium i built a little riparian area to help with filtration and it functions also as a cave underwater. The roots of the terrestrial plants are submerged in gravel and water, and a small pump (outside of the canister filter) pushes water through the glass box to a waterfall. These plants have a dedicated light as well as the turtle lights next to them. Its like a privacy fence for my turtle while basking. Yes there is a snake plant and yes it is thriving. Along with those little palm tree things, pothos, air plants, and basil that broke off my main plant and needed to grow roots to be put in soil. Its also where i propagate moss and basically any other plant to be rooted in dirt later. My fiddle leaf fig tree was next to the tank for a while and t h r i v e d with being fed tank water. I swear I can grow anything there

  • @tiffanyclark-grove1989

Illinois..succulents grow easily in the top of the aquarium. I have some sedum in a little soap dish with rocks in mine. The nice thing about sedum is you don’t really need soil as a substrate. I’ve worked at a tree shrub and perennials nursery for the last 15 years. I did idiotically use black cherry branches to make fake trees. Don’t worry, I pulled them out.

As someone who owns a ton of plants, I’m not 100% sure about the snake plant in the aquarium because snake plants can go months without water and they usually are the plant that you can neglect. Snake plants being left in water could lead to root rot because they are so used to being in dry soil. It could work but at the same time, it’s not likley.

I put almost all my plants in semi Hydro aka leca/ Pon including ZZ plants and string of hearts. The only stuff that's not in a reservoir are most succulents because they just melt (still in leca though, just no reservoir) Anything else that you can propagate in water can usually be grown in water permanently. Most plants will grow in basically any medium as long as they don't suffocate or are dehydrated to a crisp.
I just usually prefer semi Hydro over hydro because it gives my plants something to hold onto and makes them less wobbly ^^

Totally possible to propagate snake plants inside a fish tank. I frequently do this in my 3 gallon betta tank (so it’s fairly shallow) betta loves darting around them. When I pull them out for repotting she looks at me like “WTF have you done with my maze?!?!?” Until I’m guilted into adding more. @blackfalconotaku4392 Před 27 dny +1

Maybe show her some wild beta catching videos. Just be aware that some of them are fake I'd make sure to scan through the videos first to make sure that they're the right videos before showing her. Maybe show her videos from this channel. Try compromising. Ask her if you can set up the tank and have the beta in it for a little while and see if it likes it. (Just make sure that whatever filter you have in there that it isn't too strong or cover the intake with a sponge filter as I have lost a betta fish to it being stuck to the intake). Find pictures online of betta natural habitats. Mention that the chemicals that run into most small puddles would kill fish. Mention that most puddles don't stay around all year and with dry up making the betta fish die. Maybe mention those puddles where people jump into them and they completely disappear. Mention that they aren't actually puddle jumpers because they are not nearly strong enough as something like a snakehead fish and can't live out of water for long periods of time unlike other species that actually go from water source to water source. I hope this helps.

Ask her if she really thinks long flowing fins make sense for a "puddle". Ask her how puddles exist year-round when the puddle outside your house lasts for maybe a day after it rains. Ask her if she knows the average territory span of a wild betta. Ask her how bettas successfully live and find each other to proliferate in the wild in a mere puddle.

and that big glass jug has such a small mouth..they didn’t leave the water low enough to maximize the surface area. It’s so stupid. Not to mention they might never get the fish out if it grows.
and that poor goldfish and rainbow fish have zero color..you can tell they r not gonna make it too much longer.

The snake plant thing…. I dunno about that. I feel like, mine at least, don’t care for that much water… mainly cus I forget to water them for weeks 😅 and they’re perfect and grow tall. So I dunno. One got so tall I had to move it outside and i still only water it when I remember to. 😬 so I can’t imagine it being partially submerged like that at all

100% can propagate snake plants in water. I haven't tried it in my aquarium yet, but I would imagine it would be wildly successful since all the bad things for fish tanks are great for plants.

  • @kearstinnekenerson6676

You most definitely can grow snake plants hydroponically I start all my snake plants that way and they always wilt a bit when I plant them but you can keep them in water full time

Dracena stalks/trunks will grow roots in water. Snake plants specifically can grow roots from its leaves. Cut any portion of leaf and put the cut portion in water and roots will form. 🌆👼👼👼

Hokianga, Northern New Zealand. So glad I found FTR. So inspired by some, and also so saddened by some of the things I see on here. Lovely to hear someone talk with knowledge, humour, and a fair but of justifiable sarcasm, but without talking down to your audience 4.75 / 5 Keep up the good work 🙃
I have a question. Having returned to fish keeping after a gap of quite a few years I am puzzled by all the tanks with just an overhead light and no lid. They look fabulous, clean lines and good good light qualities, but how do you stop or restrict evaporation? Must be easier to manage in warmer climates, where you might not even need a to heat the tank, but doesn't anyone struggle with mould on the walls of their home or condensation on windows in parts of the world where winter gets cold with an open topped, heated tank? Or am I missing something...?
I used to have a heated 3 foot square by 1 foot deep tank for fire bellied newts, landscaped like an indoor pond (Try getting a 3 foot square lid? Not a hope!) and the evaporation loss and the effects of all that moisture was a big issue.
Maybe I should just consider a move to Florida, or one of the Pacific Islands.
