- A little walk through of how to fix the VTS module on a 1998 seadoo. And info on wiring and preventive care.
I cracked the code. Up/down thumb switch receives a negative signal from the vts via a black wire. That signal is split through the green and blue leads when either button is pressed. 2x single pole/double throw relays activate the motor for fwd & rev.
The green and blue wires need to be clipped from the vts so they dont ground out on the factory relays and blow the 7.5A vts fuse. The rest of the signal wires and the power wires should remain in tact to signal the trim gauge on the instrument cluster.
From each relay is a normally positive wire going to the 12v trim motor. When one relay (single pole/double throw. RL45 relay) is clicked on by pressing the up/down button, it switches to a negative signal to send to the motor. This makes the motor spin one direction.
Then when the other relay is switched on, a negative signal is sent to the other lead on the motor instead and the motor spins the opposite direction.

Wish I could post a picture, once its on a diagram, makes a lot more sense. its actually the same part as a 240sx power window motor, and the circuit is the same as well. switches route ground to control the relay, power should be on 85,87a on both relays, ground to 87, switches go to 86, 30 goes to each side of the motor. if you look up a power widow diagram, and then imagine its on two seperate switches instead of a double throw you can use that a reference. we should make this a plug and play kit. I'm working on a 94 xp rn, so no gagues show the trim status, so even easier.
this helped me alot. saved alot of money and time following video.
Great job... thanks bro
I own this seadoo now! Who is this? Who made this video? Kinda crazy! I just bought it from Milwaukee on the 11th of July 2021
The guy i sold it to (scott i think) sank it first day he had it. I hope its working out for you!
First thanks for making this video! I have the the exact same GSX. Had my VTS motor replaced this past winter by a shop that has a guy had the same gsx as well. Worked great first handful of times out and then the VTS stopped working again. Took off the housing and there was some water in there. Now have to troubleshoot the problem to see if I need another motor. Will be tackling soon. Wondering if you might be able to answer some questions once I get into it. Thx again!
SE Creator thx for your reply! So I determined the motor is fine. It works when I run positive and negative from the battery to the motor. My fuse was not blown however I still think and am hoping the problem is the relay. Not sure how to test if it’s the thumb switch on the handlebar. My money is on the relay since it’s a common issue. So I am going to attempt your fix. I’m a geeenhorn when it comes to 12v electronics. Would appreciate any help you might offer if I run into issues.
I did have a question now. So does your relay system stop the motor from running after the trim hits the full top or bottom or does it just keep running as long as you hold the buttons? Any idea what happens if you hold to long?
Would you mind to connect on Facebook ? Might be easier to communicate that way if I run into issues. Here’s my profile facebook.com/jonrenner7
Thx again!!
from where or from whith cable you have a 12V and negative cable ????
Do you have the modified electrical diagram for this mod?
Приветствую,где подключить шланг для запуска не на воде?
Hi does the engine have to be running for the vts to work because I’ve got the battery hacked up and key fob on, but the vts is not working, is it because of the low voltage thanks,,
Regards Phil from the UK
I just did mine but guage doesn't work is it supposed to?
I can only hear a click is that the relay?
So have a problem, the caked in electronics for the trim shorted out and keeps blowing my main fuse. I know this cause I was able to undo all work I did on the trim and everything works fine. I disconnected the wires from the caked in and kept my wires connected thinking that would do it but not getting anything. Wondering if the switches got jacked up. Regardless, keeping the wires connected to the existing caked in trim electronics is not a good idea. Would have started a fire had my fuse not blown.
The only wires that are still connected are the ones that indicate the trim gauge. The power wires to the caked in relays are not connected.
Honestly there's a better way to do it. Go buy a wire box that's mentioned in a vts fix forum. Sorry forgot which one. Then buy a auto reset 10 amp fuse. Plumb it in and vts will stop when it maxes out. Sorry for very little info been awhile
I was avoiding the expensive box. Ive dobe this to a few skis now and its really easy to sort out now that i have a good mental schematic
What kinda relays are they? Are they normally open or normally closed?
Its all in the video description
Does the trim stop by itself when it gets to the top/bottom with this setup?
It doesnt, but it also doesnt have enough power to break anything if youre on the button a second too long.
Did this problem cause you to get a 12v low warning?
@@mostlymotorized I have this same model, just bought it. Starter was smoking today so I think that needs to be replaced but when it did run, the trim would go up and down perfect but then when I was out on the lake in Minnesota it would display as going up and down all at once. Like it was glitching out.
If you just go on eBay and type in VTS fix a guy from Lockheed developed a little box that just plugs in and it works great
Are you referring to the one Called the solution fix? For about $90
Yeah the price keeps going up so i was working around it
i wish you could of showin it actually working as a visual.
