  • In this video I bypass the failing VTS module with an 451M relay. Wiring and bench testing all explained here. Resurrecting a Seadoo 97.5 GSX Limited aka the Gray Ghost. This was the first year of the big 947/951 Rotax Engine.

    Thank you for spelling out how this works. Not sure why this relay is so confusing on all the forums and groups.

      Yeah I know ..took me a bit of research to finally grasp how it works and the cleanest way to splice it in. I'm glad this helped you

    I'm rebuilding mine on a 96 spx. I depotted it and found it has 11 reed switches and 11 14 ohm resistors. It seems the 1st and last are for a limit on up/down. I have some appropriate relays and am waiting for some pc board and some parts to come in so I can build one and repot it. I'm planning on using 2 normally closed reeds for the travel limits and normally open for the guage. The resistors are in series and the switches add the resistors as they close one at a time with the magnet on the actuator rod.

      That sounds fantastic. I saw the circuit diagram once and it was very simple. How did you go about the depotting ?

    Where did you get the wiring schematic? Is that from the original factory wiring or the part you bought?

      Hey brother, it's from the free manual you can download. Factory for ski. You have to study it a little. Every one has a diagram toward the end. seadoomanuals.net/

    What a great video!!!! Thank you for doing this! Quick question,,,,Did you plug the two wire connector (maybe red/black) back in or is it just abandoned? Thanks Again!

    • @jonparkmac
      @jonparkmac  Před rokem

      Yeah, I regret not showing how I spliced. I spliced into the vts side harness only. The 6 pin and 2 pin connectors remain plugged into main harness. Those two wires carry the motor power, so they map to the larger wires on the relay. You have to run the other two large relay wires to the motor. I put a hole in the vts housing for that. The 6 pins go to the sensor for the gauge, and to the small wires on the relay. The tricky part is the blue/green small relay wires and blue/green on the 6 pin need to carry ground, not positive

      Got m451 relay from Amazon. I think I described all the wiring. You do not need a wiring harness but you do need to splice into the VTS cable

    Any chance you have video of how you mounted the relay? Im expecting it needs to be protected from the moisture these things are known for.

    • @jonparkmac
      @jonparkmac  Před 4 měsíci

      I'm afraid I don't, but what I did was mount it directly onto the back side of the vts up high and sealed all the entries into the relay with black rtv. I carefully zip tied all the wires together so nothing moves. Best I could think of. Putting it in a little box you'd have to seal that up too ..so that's why I just sealed the relay itself

    Hi guys, the 451m relay upgrade.
    Is that relay a door actuator relay??
    That is what is coming up when I look up 451m relay on ebay

    • @jonparkmac
      @jonparkmac  Před 4 měsíci

      Yes. Used for door locks and I think even for windows in some cars. It's a simple device with the small wires controlling and large wires delivering power. Green and blue are up/down. You also need a self resetting fuse on the red power wire. I used a 3 amp.

    I'm getting ready to rebuild mine, however, if the motor now works, and the housing works, why do you need the bypass relay?

    • @jonparkmac
      @jonparkmac  Před rokem +1

      If it all works then no it's not needed. Relay is only needed when the module inside the vts stops working. It's a relay too

    • @jonparkmac

      Not sure on that model, but I'd start by switching the up/down wires to tell if it's the module/motor or the switch.

  • @chrisharmon1667
    @chrisharmon1667 Před rokem +1

    The ground from vts harness has to go to battery ground for this to work on a 96 xp !

    • @jonparkmac
      @jonparkmac  Před rokem

      You should be able to pick up a ground in the harness. After all, the oem vts gets it's ground (and everything else) from the harness. So shouldn't need extra wires anywhere.

    • @jonparkmac
      @jonparkmac  Před rokem +1

      Make sure your motor itself is reliable and the screw drive isbnot bent and hanging up. The plastic drive can become bent. Then check connections real good especially ground ..they often have dedicated ground to motor. Polish that up and reattach. If it still does it, check voltage on BOTH the red wires. One is motor the other is relay. They are both on when key is on. If that's all ok, yeah module is going bad.
