Saying you don't think an animated Star Fox, Metroid, and Kirby movie wouldn't do well is insane
Of those three choices, I don’t see them doing a Star Fox movie for a good reason : Star Fox is a dead franchise since Star Fox Zero. Unless Nintendo decides to make another Star Fox game, that franchise will not be adapted to film.
You’re so wrong John. How popular was Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man before the first Avengers? They need to make quality and fun movies in order to build up the hype. I’d go with Donkey Kong, Zelda, Starfox, Metroid, and Kirby. Then the Super Smash Bros movie

Yeah, you can't have meaningful storytelling and narrative impact without first developing two-three characters. Otherwise, it would just be shallow fan service. John doesn't understand videogame storytelling. The general audience needs to have some character development and story threads to lead into a Smash movie. That's why he ain't a write.

John, you're wrong. Super Smash Bros is a HUGE crossover game franchise. That movie would make a BILLION, EASY!
John seriously underestimates the popularity of the Nintendo and Nintendo-adjacent properties that are in Super Smash Bros. Sonic, Metroid, Mega Man, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Pac-Man. If the studios can play nice, Metal Gear Solid can be included. Hell, the Pokémon that’ll be included would play an enormous part in whatever the movie would turn out to be.
If the Warner Brothers/Paramount merger goes through, there could be a crossover between Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog.
I don’t think what John said about the character’s popularity is necessarily true. The Switch is one of the most highest selling Video Game Console of all time. And the top 5 games are Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros, Breath of the Wild, and then Mario Odyssey. So the video game crossover sold more than a mainline Mario game. And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was also a crossover of sorts since Link and Animal Crossing characters were prevalent. Plus, in terms of the overseas crowd, they go crazy for animal crossing and fire emblem. And things would only go crazier if they are able to bring in the likes of Pac-Man, Sonic, and Steve
I agree with you. I do agree with John if you are talking about characters that break into pop culture for NON-GAMERS then anything that isn't Mario they probably won't know. But everyone in the gaming community knows other Nintendo characters and you don't have to further than when E3 or in more recent years a Nintendo Direct is coming out. When a Direct is coming the question isn't what Mario game, cuz it's a given that we might hear something, it normally is when are they finally announce the long-wanted Metroid Prime 4, for example. Also just look at Smash itself when they reveal characters. Normally the reveals of characters that aren't from Mario get way more fanfare than any Mario characters ever do.

Smash Bros would easily do $1-billion at the box office. A lot of people grew up on those games, and would turn out for this movie, just as we did with the Mario movie. To me, a smash bros film is a no-brainer if they want to make some other introductory movies beforehand.

Kids know these characters John. My nephew who is ten pulls super smash bros out for us to play every time I visit. And he been playing it since he was seven.....these kids know these characters regardless of them being as old as they are. Kirby is the main character of the story mode man
It makes sense. Solo Mario, solo Zelda, solo metroid and Star Fox then put them all together. Shared universes are risky but if they pulled it off it would be a massive hit.

I think John is underestimating gaming culture and video game fandoms because I see that there are a lot of people who are into a lot of lesser known games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Banjo and Kazooie, Viva Pinata. Video games and online gaming nowadays are more prevalent in our leisure than reading comic books. Not many kids today like to read. That's just what it is. We're living in a tech dominated world and therefore, there's going to be a lot more people who are going to be able to pick up on a certain character that they recognize. Because technological toys like video games are easier and more popular to access than to go and buy expensive rare comic books that not many people are going to read. Most general audiences just go to watch superhero movies for the movies themselves, not because they're die hard comic book nerds. Those groups of people are more on the niche side. Gamers however can prosper a lot more and boost ticket sales because the IP they're adapting is something that can be relevant to those masses, like what happened to FNAF. If the Slenderman movie came out when the creepypasta was still popular it would've done a bit better. Not much, but still young gen z and alpha would've been able to recognize the character as that scary horror Markiplier or mat pat reviews on CZcams. The fans will propel the success
They dont need to make 4 or 5 more separate movies before making a Smash Game. Smash is one of the most popular and best selling games for Nintendo since the 90s. It’s gonna make crazy money regardless of its quality just off nostalgia alone

Completely disagree with coming out right away. You need to build your way to smash bros. You already made a Mario movie, they're doing a Zelda film, and you can spin off Donky Kong. You can make some kind of agreement with Ryan Reynolds Detective Pikachu and Paramounts Sonic and explaine that all these characters are all from different universes. There's no real story for the Smash Bros games so you'll have to be creative. But i always felt that the reason why the MCU worked was because faze 1 did a great job in building all the way till Avengers 1. I never understood why all these studios didn't follow that formula. It's like they see "Universe", and that will make automatic money. Just make solid films, build characters, bring them together. BOOM.

Personally, I think at least 5 of the OG 8 Smash characters are popular enough to support their own movies. You think people wouldn't go see a Kirby, Metroid, or Donkey Kong movie? They may not make as much as Mario, but they'd still be mega successful.
As the for the idea itself, I don't know. Unlike Marvel, these Nintendo franchises are wildly different in both tone and audience.

Mario did phenomenal as well as the planet of the apes , Kong, Godzilla vs Kong so a Donkey Kong movie could do very well.
The Super Mario Bros movie has made over 1 bil, and about 600 mil in the USA.
This is the one topic I think that John should stay out of. He doesn’t have the casual knowledge to know how huge the other Nintendo properties are and how long Smash has been around. I’m 35 and I remember renting the original Smash at blockbuster back in 1999 when it came out. Nintendo has a long legacy that extends beyond Mario. But John is a movie guy so I can’t fault him for that.

Yeah even if people don't know the different franchises they at least know the characters from Super Smash Brothers. Way more people have played Captain Falcon in Smash Bros then have ever played his games. I'm sure there's some public interest at least in the characters themselves if not their universes.
Also, the Marvel movies turned Iron Man and Captain America into A-listers. They were way less popular beforehand. It's not necessary for everyone to have the popularity of Mario

We all loved the first avengers movie because, in a way, it represented an achievement that many comic book readers dreamt of: a gathering of their favourite heroes fighting together. BUT the have seen crossovers many times even before 2012, especially on TV. Now, I agree with John. Just because a formula worked once doesn't mean it'll every time someone decides to replicate it in another format or franchise, look what happened to the Dark Universe, or even sadder, DC: a decent planning and bad execution, and although the directors are the ones facing the media most of the times when everything falls apart, it's actually because of executives that this things don't always work. Crossovers aren't always the best ideas
John you clearly don't know anything about this potential juggernaut, that's right, you barely know Mario, but kids that barely care for movies are fanatics of dozens of other characters, this is a good platform for a shared universe because even horrible movies would make 400 million easily, is not the same thing as mature-oriented videogame franchises, and Smash doesn't even make a lot of sense storywise, so it doesn't need to be nearly as cohesive as the MCU

I think Campea's panel might have an interesting idea via going the alternate Avengers route with Smash Bros. I recall this approach is what DC wanted to do with that first version of Justice League around 2009 or so. But scrapped it I think due to Nolan's Batman still being a thing. I'd be curious to see how things could play out with Smash first and then giving the participants movies afterwards. But I am kind of curious as to what kind of plot they could give a game like Smash that would be an enjoyable popcorn movie.
I assume an Enter The Dragon, Mortal Kombat style tournament plot structure could play somewhat of a role. But I don't think that will be all.

Some Nintendo characters could easily be turned into franchise movies with sequels (Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Bayonetta...), but some might lack the material for sequels and therefore would benefit from a Smash Bros movie to appear in (Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Kirby...).
They could also include the ones that are already being made by other studios (Netflix's Pokémon series/Paramount's Sonic movies).
Everyone was sceptical of the Mario movie then it made more than a billion. I can’t speak to the box office of the other Nintendo movies but once they have done all the intro movies and release the Smash Bros avengers style movie with Mario I am 100% sure it will surpass 1B as well.

It doesn't matter if the characters are known or not, what matters is if the story, characters and the films are good. If they are good, then new fans will begin to love Metroid, Starfox, Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Kirby, ect

This is actually one movie you could make from the get go. It doesn’t need build up. Video game movies are targeted to a specific public and they need no introductions, and this characters are cool enough as to guarantee the interest of the public for new products after a Smash Movie. Videogames come in 2 variations: the ones with shallow stories that are forgettable or super simple to explain in 2 min; or the super complex that need several games to develop. Bad idea to first develop the characters because that would require a bazillion movies first and people will get tired before getting to the main event. A good Smash Bros movie would need tons of characters, maybe not all of them but at least as many as the original game. if not a few more if you really want an epic movie that remains in the minds of the collective for the eras, movies are supposed to be fun and imaginative; we don’t need to build up for dark massive events with everything. Nintendo has the right blend of characters to enchant the viewers.

Nah, you’ve got to build up to it imo. Movies based on Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, etc. would be huge individually. Not every character needs a solo outing, but the big ones at the center of the movie should.

I love the idea but this is way too early. I personally found adding Donkey Kong into the Mario film was too early. They need to let the characters breathe before making them fight each other.
Sonic is gonna end up being the Spider-Man of this universe and they’re gonna have to make small little Sony deals for each set of movies lmao

100% agree. Also, the sad reality is that no matter what they do, they will never be able to do a movie that satisfies every Smash Brothers fan.
One thing I want is that they start with a very small roster just like how the first Avengers movie had six heroes. If they have too many characters for the first movie, it becomes overcrowded and messy. That was my biggest problem with the 2021 Mortal Kombat.
You can't just rush into a Smash Bros movie without building up the other characters and worlds of what will become the Nintendo Cinematic Multiverse. Because then you'll have people who don't play any video games or ones who hasn't played any Nintendo titles since the SNES questioning of their stories, details, etc. Even though Mario and other are well known from their games, remember; The Super Mario Bros Movie is set in its own, separate universe that unrelated to the Mario games. So, the same can be said with the other future Nintendo movies and stream/web/online series.

Animal crossing is a really big franchise that would probably be in the line up. Also maybe splatoon seems to be a big priority for Nintendo nowadays. I could also see pikmin (even though not super super mainstream) being a suprise hit with a lot of kids. Maybe give the pikmin a sort of minions like personality

Everyone does have good points. Right now Smash Bros Ultimate has sold over 30+ million copies which is a huge deal for the franchise but I don’t think having films build up to it is a good idea. Really, the games themselves seem to suggest that it’s separate from each franchise world/universe. John makes a good point about just doing it to see who the audience really likes since we don’t really know how other franchises besides Mario & Zelda will do in theaters.
Sales for classic series like Star Fox and Metroid are small compared to other franchises. I would prefer they figure out how to make films based on their franchises to see what the audience likes and be interested in

But Super Smash Bros didn’t start with Super Smash Bros. It was a build up from NES to N64 and tons of games. They have characters from games that we still haven’t seen in a while.
The difference is that Marvel has decades of comics material to pull from and those characters have crossed over multiple times in comics. Before Smash Brothers, Nintendo characters never crossed over like that. Also the fact that Nintendo franchises are very different in tone. How do you make them all work in a shared universe?

Eh, you could easily personify the Master Hand where his gloves have that trademark look, uses magic and incorporates giant magic hand attacks. It's not that hard to turn it into a villain.

I think a Smash Bros. Movie could in fact work, but the execution would need to be really creative. Thing is, Smash Bros is a game that celebrates gaming, so what should the movie be about? I think that the main cast will be comprised of a select few Nintendo icons as well as a few hugely iconic movie characters. This movie should be about celebrating movies by finally seeing iconic characters duke it out for the first time.
The thing is that even though Smash Brothers is about fighting, you cannot make a movie where the characters are just fighting without narrative purpose. If you can’t even make write a story in a movie, you might as well just play the game instead.
@@juanluismendoza8655 I’m so glad you asked. You’re right when you say that it can’t be only about the fighting. But have you considered WHY they’re fighting? WHO’s the common enemy? It would be a pretty standard superhero movie type plot where the story is simplistic to make room for the action. Besides, the Smash Bros series does have original characters to pull ideas from. Like maybe Master and Crazy Hand are the ones pulling the strings, making these characters confront each other. This is why I said the execution would need to be creative.

I'm not a gamer at all, i haven't touched a console since 2014, but sometimes i feel like buying a nintendo just to play Smash Bros and only Smash Bros. I would watch the $hit out of a Smash Bros movie! 😂
Also, there is already a fighting video game with horror movie characters. It is just like a Mortal Kombat with only horror icons, i forgot the name.

Functionally a smash bros story mode is pretty much the same thing as the Avengers. Just look at the story mode from Brawl. Sure, you got some of the characters turning evil as a plot device to set up fights, but that actually happened in the original Avengers movie too with Hawkeye
Would be interested but from illumination? Nah. They make good looking movies but the stories just aren’t great.
I don't buy the logic that Link (and by extension Zelda as a whole) is as unpopular as it's being suggested here. The Zelda series has literally never been more popular, with games selling in the 10s of millions of copies in the Switch generation.

The crazy part is that Breath of the Wild outsold any of the 3D Mario games. Ever. Slowly reaching a point where Zelda is a bigger deal than Mario (though they never really figured out how to make Zelda spinoffs profitable)

Kids love more nintendo, sonic and pokemon than superheroes and star wars. Even when I was kid, I wanted a super smash bros movie before a superhero team up. This movie could be dogshit and it will still financially succeed.
