Saving Private Thomas would have been the WWII drama we all needed
What does WWII mean?
@@tonyjonker3608 world war 2.
@@tonyjonker3608 holy fuck dude
Bruh saving private ryan but it's Thomas the tank engine lmao
Lol so true
The Thomas model is insane looking I'm mesmerised by it.
The movie would've be interesting to see perhaps in another dimension the movie was made.
I’m 99% confident that this movie would have been a “Chronicles of Narnia” style film.
The war is a backdrop to the events that play out.
That would have been awesome if that were the case.
That would’ve been awesome even if it were for a Thomas and the Magic Railroad remake.
@@prehistorichero2755 I'm working on that now. It will use the plot from the original workprints, my Thomas voice will be deep, and yeah.
@@EdgicHedgicOfficial Any differences from the film, even aside from P.T. Boomer if you wish to feature him?
@@prehistorichero2755 I am gonna feature P.T. Boomer, and the script will follow the August 1999 draft.
Whether or not this would've been good or bad, it's still sad that this was cancelled. I think the father and son were meant to be the Awdrys but that's just a guess. A script was confirmed to be fully written in early 2010 I think but is yet to be leaked. I do hope the Marc Forster film doesn't go down the route of AEG, I don't think I could ever get use to seeing a live action version of that.
The Mark Forester movie is supposed to have live action in it?
That's what I was thinking!
@@TrainsCatsOtherStories Yes it is.
@@TrainsCatsOtherStories Half CGI and Half Model
We had the same theory six days apart.
Marc Foster directing a Thomas movie is actually so cool to hear. I love what he did with Winnie the Pooh in 2018's Christopher Robin, I hope we get a similar movie to that assuming it's still moving ahead.
Man Thomas and friends needs to be bought out AGAIN, FROM MATTEL. Ong
@@Young_RoninMattel did ruined a lot no question about it
The Adventures of Thomas has always fascinated me. The concept alone sounds like fan work, yet it was official. A World War II Thomas movie is awesome, and the fact the official brand was going to attempt it was astounding. It was a shame it never materialized, but it's just unlikely it will ever happen now, especially given the dilapidated state of the franchise. I do like the idea of a HOTR style plot though. We've seen Steamies vs Diesels far too much
There was also a Bob the Builder movie planned starring Dwayne Johnson. Yes.
Honestly looking back, Postman Pat got it easy with his movie.
Rock the Builder, can we wrestle it?
I now have this mental image of Bob performing the Rock Bottom on Spud and calling him a jabroni.
I'm also pretty sure Jim Ross could have played Farmer Pickles.
I WOULD KILL TO SEE THAT
I feel the plotline could've been about the engines of sodor helping through the war efforts, while the son and his father slowly start to create a bond between themselves and the railway, while dealing with the hardships the second world war gave to the general public. Not sure if that would make a perfect plot line, but it sounded feasable for a proper adult thomas film!
I've always been a fan of this proposed movie based on its poster alone, especially knowing they were going to take the historic route. I actually didn't see any concept art of the models until recently when Unlucky Tug included it in his lost media video, so I'm glad to see at least some details finally emerge for this highly anticipated movie. I'm also interested to see where this new movie goes, and hopefully they have at least a little bit of respect for Awdry's intentions.
Howdy
I wish this movie was released, it's a very interesting concept, Thomas in the war and stuff. I wonder what the brand would be like if this movie was released if it would've changed at all, It would be cool to see Thomas is a E2 realistic style.
Me too
This movie may not be happening, but the Marc Forster movie is still possible!
He made Christopher Robin, and that movie was excellent and did Pooh justice, a Thomas movie in the same vein would be cool!
It wouldn’t surprise me if his movie borrows some elements from this one…
I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high, his upcoming film is ‘a man called Otto’. In my country that’s coming out in 2023. Also, I’m pretty sure that this movie has not been confirmed, I looked all around on this Marc Forster guy and there’s nothing on this kind of movie
@@SCHfan-jb4zo Well, we'll see.
Thomas fans in denial: “Sure the film is 10 years late but I’m sure it’s still in production.”
I remember when news about this movie first arose. I imagined what such a movie would be like and imagined seeing it in theaters. Quite a shame it ended up getting canceled.
7:25 it’s actually Forster, not Foster.
As for the video itself, you brought up a lot of very good points. However I think the only thing the movie would have in common with it’s WWII setting is just that it was set during it. I like to think that maybe the movie was the father and son fleeing London for Sodor in order to escape the war which leads to the film plot. Just like how the books were meant to be an escape route from the real world.
If you want Thomas and war, watch Victor’s Stories of War mini-series, works a lot better there as it takes itself seriously and works with the more realistic tone Stories of Sodor goes with
I have seen the series myself it's pretty good
To break it to those in the comments: Marc Forster working on his Thomas & Friends theatrical project, also worked on World War Z and Christopher Robin. He will direct and produce a Thomas movie in name, with the same co-producer, Renne Wolfe (who worked on Christopher Robin) as a film adaptation, based on the franchise.
In my personal theories, there won't be a lot of characters to add in the line-up, a voice cast, little nods to the source material, and a marginally overshadowing plot.
Winnie the Pooh is getting a film in the veins of Paddington, and recently Barbie's theatrical film has got a teaser, so Thomas has to wait on his wheels.
besides that, TAOT seems to be a bad idea from the start. TATMR had Thomas barely appear in the movie, but it had a very confusing plot, and puts more attention to the human characters.
the only difference is that this film would've gone to loose timeline with Diesel being in the story and WW2 set around a Thomas the Tank Engine straying away from its lighthearted and escapist setting. Say what you would about where Thomas is at it's current form, the lighthearted niche appeal could've been lost from being set in the dark events.
I think The Marc Foster film will be a bit similar to another film he directed which was “Christopher Robin”
That would be amazing!
To be honest I wish this movie was real but that got cancelled from the Mattel buyout
Welp, for those who have already seen the video by Derek Smith, we all know what this film was going to be..
IT SUCKS.
Sufficed to say they robbed us BIG TIME when it came to this production. This could've been an interesting glimpse into what Sodor would've been like during the Second World War, something Awdry never touched upon both in the RWS and any of the IoS books.
0:22 nice train frontier classic music
It's too bad they never got around to making this, it honestly seems interesting.
It’s a shame this movie never came to be, but I would have love to see it and how it would have affected the franchise following it.
I think a Thomas take on a "Christopher Robin" type movie would've been interesting.
Also, I'm sceptical on the new movie being about AEG. As why would they get a big name director like Marc Forster for something like that, when he seems to be more familiar with the original series?
Imagine that the render of thomas would be 3D printable. It would make a very outstanding model. 🤤
4:30 Arguably, dieselization in the U.K. was significantly delayed as a result of the Second World War. Oil rationing in the U.K. didn't end until 1950 and it was feared in the event of another world war, Britain would be unable to import sufficient quantities of oil to power a fleet of diesel locomotives. Part of the reason British Railways continued building steam locomotives into the 1950s was because of Britain's lack of domestic oil reserves and an abundance of coal. Interestingly, there was an attempt by the LMS to reduce labor costs for steam locomotives by converting a handful of Black Fives to burn oil rather than coal, but the higher cost of oil versus coal canceled out any reduction in labor costs.
I always pictured this film being like "bedknobs and broomsticks" with the war being more of a background piece or someting
An idea I had for a "live-action Thomas and Friends" (if I ever get into the film industry) would be to make a movie that's a blend of 'Christopher Robin' and 'Tolkien'.
Like 'Toklien', the film would be about Rev. W. Awdry's life, and like 'Christopher Robin', the trains would be rendered quite realistically.
(one thing I'd like to do as a nice little inclusion is have Thomas' and Henry's first appearances be as Rev. Awdry first envisioned them: Thomas as a J50, and Henry as a 4-4-2 Atlantic)
If they ever decide to make that movie here are some ideas:
1. The Father and The Son met a certain man who goes by Rev. Wilbert Awdry who creates Train Stories to entertain children and he is struggling to sell them so The Father and The Son help Wilbert to sell his books (Now the only problem with this is that no one looks like Wilbert but who knows maybe Christopher will step in to the role)
2. At the end of the movie the Father hears the Air Raid Sirens go off and sees that a train that is very close to Knapford and at the back of it are 14 Vans full of Gun powder in them so The Father decides to make a sacrifice and drive the train away from Knapford but im sad to say that the Train got hit by an explosion and The Father did not make it out alive so Sir. Topham hat decides to make a Statue of The Father at the exact place where he died (The Statue will be on the side of the tracks and This idea is inspired by Stories of Sodor)
I personally think the Mike Foster film is there as a placeholder till Matel's other major film project, the Barbie movie (whose trailer just released this week) launches, and Matel can observe how the audience responds to that film to deem whether they will go forward with Mike Foster's film or not.
This seems to be the general direction most adaptation films are taking. SONY took this cautious approach with the Sly Cooper film (who did get a trailer around the same time the reports of the Thomas film cropped up) but actively put the film (now a show?) on ice after the Ratchet & Clank film didn't perform as SONY expected.
Overall, will Mike Foster's version see the light of day? It's hard to tell because we aren't sure what Matel is looking for in terms of performance and audience/critic reactions in their adaptations. The same can be said for any adaptations. We'll only really know once Mike Foster is given the signal to go forward, and casting begins for the proposed film. Anyways, great video TB!
-Edited because I cannot spell to save my life.
All I imagine seeing in this movie is Diesel 10 doing Nazi Salutes with Pinchy.
"I doubt mattel would revive something so realistic."
Never say never my friend. This new Mark Forester movie supposedly is meant to cater to all ages. Lets just hope IT doesn't get cancelled to.
I personally feel like Adventures of Thomas was going to be a movie that would be set in World War 2 but wouldn’t be talked about much outside of the beginning and end, with it only really being there so there’s a reason why the father & son escape to Sodor. I also think the Mark Forester movie is not going to be in the All Engines Go style because while Mattel has made some horrible decisions with the franchise, I think they know a theatrical All Engines Go movie would not sell well especially with Many Non-Thomas fans not even knowing the reboot exists. This is all just what I think they were about but I hope the Mark Forester movie is good and more details about The Adventures of Thomas get leaked!
While The Adventures of Thomas could’ve been the start of a total cinematic universe like the MCU, production was kind of doomed from the start. Heck Hit Entertainment we’re going to make a live action Bob The Builder with Dwayne Johnson in the lead role which also didn’t get off the ground. I personally believe that the upcoming Marc Forster film will be nothing like AEG and to be a treasure trove to the original series, when I think of a storyline being told in a “Modern and Unexpected Way” - I think of the plot focusing on the mobilisation of electric locomotives and how they’re starting to take over priority of the railway from diesels and steam locomotives. I truly believe that this new movie from Mattel Films will focus on The Steam Team and Diesel avoiding the scrapyard and getting replaced with the modern electric locomotives we have now.
This movie was probably before they made Thomas and the magic railroad, think about it. A girl that is distant from her grandfather that accidentally found sodor, that her grandfather already knew about. . .
And Thomas
I was so excited for this movie, too.
I got the impression it was set during the war in the same way Narnia was.
Not like the Ice Witch was working with the Nazi Germany, I don't imagine any antagonist in the movie would have been associated with them either...
I am deadass gonna try to write this in the summer once school is out for the summer.
You have got to be my favourite youtuber, you upload a lot of the time and the videos are great!
Man a WW2 thomas would be something. We need kids shows that dont talk down to kids back. Honestly we need it. Some parents (i know mine were) are forced to watch kids shows with their kids. I had to watch hello kitty with my sister and now i understanr what Wilbert was getting at with the story books as well.
As I said in my own video 'Can an animated train be a Movie star', I got an idea on how this movie plot could have worked, but I need more time to pad out the details.
I never heard of this abandoned film. But that realistic render of Thomas' model is pretty cool.
Maybe *JUST* Maybe one day The most loyal Fans of Thomas & Friends or someone will create the most BADASS Thomas Movie we will ever see!!
I'm just so sad, this movie won't come out!😭 PLEASE! I WANT IT SO MUCH!
I hadn't heard about it till years later. I wish it had come out
If they made this movie it would be a box office success and they would have used their movie model designs for the rest of the series and season 16 would be the grand finale of it
I'm not saying this is what the movie would've been, this is how I would've written it.
It starts off in WWII with a father telling his sick two year a story (Wilbert and Christopher, though it's not explicit). The story is about a father and son who have drifted apart and the railway that brought them together. The son runs away from home and jumps on a train bound for who-knows-where? It’s delayed because the guard is no where to be seen. At last, the son shouts “Here he comes!” The father just missing the train as it leaves. That train is Edward’s first train in a while from Edward’s Day Out. From there, several classic stories are told from the engine’s perspective (can’t rule that out) but also the son's, who makes a life for himself on the railway and the father's who’s trying to reunite his son. Eventually they’re brought together by the railway. A story happening unbeknownst in the background on the original RWS stories that's brought to the foreground.
I know this is completely unrelated to this video but, what is the steam locomotive footage at 4:30?
I wish this movie came out, but let's hope the Live Action Thomas Movie lives up to the hipehype
Wait... Father and Son? Bonding over the railway?
That background sounds VERY familiar - Didn't the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son Christopher have that same bonding method?
I believe I might have a theory on who the Father and Son would have been!
I grew up on Thomas the train as a kid, but don’t remember hearing abt this bc I was too young to remember. I bet 4 year old me would have loved smth like this.
Btw anyone who grew up watching Thomas think that the show has changes a lot? ( like I’m traumatized and also sad that kids today won’t be able to watch the OG Thomas, but it’s probably just me lol )
What do you mean?
I’d love to see a fan-film about the “Sodor Blitz”…
*wink wink*
First thing I notices was the music in the background. If anyone has ever played Train Frontier Express or TF Classic you’ll know what I’m talking about! Freakin love those games.
I've seen these rumors before, and I would see a custom model of this in ur collection
What resources did they use for the concept art? I wanna use it
From what I know, Marc Forster (Foster?) - the guy who's working on the next Thomas movie - was also the director of Christopher Robin, which had a similar but different idea to what Adventures of Thomas was going for; with Christopher Robin being about the titular character rekindling his relationship with his childhood friends, and Adventures of Thomas referenced Sodor as a place the father visited as a child and forgotten about. Given how Christopher Robin was like, I think that's the perfect template for what the next Thomas film should be, and why I think Marc was a good choice, and Adventures could sort of act as a template for what had been attempted and what they can learn from.
(But let's be honest, if it is AEG related, I will hold you solely responsible TrainBoy)
i remember hearing of this film for the first time way back then. i was so stoked to see how a WWII Thomas movie would play out, but it never came to be. i will be looking forward to this new film though, which i literally just found out because of this video lmao
The cancelled movie is clearly like the overly delayed Five Nights at Freddy’s movie at this point where it just awaits to get itself off the ground. Even if it did, that film would have most likely been banned from countries like Germany and Japan for the mentions of the final World War.
Nice photo of Carmarthen station you used there
The more I think about this, the more interesting it becomes to me. I can't help but wonder what a Thomas movie with these factors wouldve been like. I do think that WWII wasn't the best choice..the axis side of the war alone would have the film in a vice grip teetering on peek of a mountain between two cliffs that read pg and pg13, however, I could imagine a post WWII story about a boy who grew up and is out trying to find his father who was last stationed on sodor. You could even have the kid grow up to be Thomas's conductor. along with this little mystery story on the side, it might just keep kids and adults interested. Use the war as more of a plot point to progress the story, rather than having it be the theme of the movie, sorta like Christopher Robbin did. It used the hardships of war to explain part of who Christopher Robbin grew up to be. It's not like he was smuggling Pooh and Piglet out of a Heffalump armed Germany
I remember there being rumors about this movie receiving “adult themed toys.”
Not in THAT way, though, right?
This loss still stings
I’m assuming the new movie will go for a somewhat real world approach, it definitely won’t be the Adventures of Thomas but considering it’ll be live action I can assume it’ll look more realistic.
I know im a month late to say this When you said when the boy found sodor that his father used to visit but cant remember it reminds me of disney's Christmas movie of the nutcracker and the four realms
preferably I think it would make sense to add in new characters for the railroads of the axis powers such as the Henschel Meter-Gauge 1914 locomotive or maybe a DR Class 44 from 1930 it would make more sense to make it a DR 44 since they were used by the not c,s or the diesel Class V36 Shunter from 1937 or DR Class 52 "Kreigslock" each of these locomotives are german and could at least be used for a role as such.
I remember reading a story on wattpad, it was called something along the lines of "Thomas and friends world War II" if I remember the actual title I'll edit this comment but 3:06 basically sums up the plot of the story
Edit: the story I mentioned was called "Thomas and the great war" its on wattpad if anyone wants to read it
"Hey Thomas, look up!"
"Is that a bird? Is that a plane, yes, it's a Junkers Ju-87D-5 Stuka"
"And what is this?"
"A 1000 kg bomb...."
It's currently in development 🤩
It is?!?!
It’s not
@@WilliamAfton115 oh, hello William Afton

Five Nights at Freddy's movie: I'm the movie with the most delays!
The Adventures of Thomas: Hold my coal
Wilbert: 😐... You're telling me, you're going to make a movie... What's it about?
Mattel: whispers in his ear*
Wilbert: YOU'RE GOING TO WHAT?!
Aw, I honestly would've loved to see this :(
Personally for me, with the Marc Foster Thomas movie whether it will see the light of day all depends on the success of the Barbie movie.
...they actually wanted to make that meme where Thomas meets the German railway guns into a movie?
This was the first time hearing about this. But this reminds me of Star Wars 1313 never seeing the light of day either when a particular company bought Lucasfilm…
4:37 bringing up the point of increased labor cost, an interesting semi plot could’ve been only the most “useful/important” engines would be able to be used while their friends sat in the shed, ex: Thomas, Gordon, Henry, and maybe James would have been able to operate
Just imagining how it would of been just makes me think of the movie "The Train", with the scene of the spitfire attacking the locomotive and the engine trying to get into the tunnel and escaping the spitfire. Just having that scene but change it with the locomotive as Thomas and the Spitfire as a German Fighter with the father and son trying to escape the fighter with the driver and firemen getting away from the plane and making Thomas go faster so they don't die from the plane. Maybe with intense music in the scene but that's how I would think it would go down.
I think this movie would have had similar opening to Narnia.
The blitz happen, the son runs to the air raid shelter, and in the next scene we are at the train station and the boy climbs onto the train for Sodor. And we don't see until we reach Sodor, the engine pulling the train was Thomas.
Is the music in the background from "Train Frontier Classic"? Aka the epic very nostalgic game I can't play, because my brother broke deleted the game by ruining all the games and the Xbox 360 itself
7:19 when all engines go gets a new season
Do you know where I can find the files of the renders shown?
Pretty sure they are just the pictures, not the model
@@merlinandmurdoch7837 Maybe the source of the pictures could reveal the original render.
I am glad that this movie never came out. It sounded like a really bad idea, since it mostly would focus on a father and son, instead of Thomas. Plus it made little to no sense, since Diesels like Diesel were not invented till the 50s.
I'm honestly kinda surprised we didn't get a fan interpretation of this film yet
There actually have been a few, though most of them aren't that great.
Ok, two things:
1. I don't get why anyone would think that the movie's still coming out when it's pretty much common knowledge that it isn't.
2. The whole 'Steamies vs. Diesels' plot line would make no sense because diesels didn't become a common thing till after the war... yeah I just said something that didn't need to be said.
Well, at least we have the Stories of War by Victor Tanzig. That's more than good enough for me as a Thomas in WWii film. Still, I'd be fascinated to know more of what this film would've been like.
You know, there’s actually a fan-made version of the movie in the works. I remember seeing the trailer for it. It’s called “Thomas’ Army”. Sadly, I can’t find the video, or even remember who made it, so I’ll just just have to describe what happened in it, and hope that they read this.
Thomas was being fired up one morning, when a young girl with curly brown hair and brown overalls walked up to him. Thomas introduced himself, and the girl introduced herself as Charlotte. She explained that she had just come to Sodor on an evacuation train from London, but snuck away from the group, since she didn’t want to go live with a foster family. Thomas told Charlotte that she was welcome to stay at the sheds with her, which cheered her up. When Thomas asked Charlotte what happened to her parents, Charlotte told him that she would probably never see them again. She said that her dad had gone to fight in the war, but before she could explain the whereabouts of her mom, Thomas’ crew told him he was ready to go. Thomas promised Charlotte that he would see her again that evening, and set off.
I really look forward to seeing this when it comes out! To the CZcamsr who made this video, or anyone who can find it, can you PLEASE send me the link? I am driving myself UP THE WALLS trying to find it again!
Did it use model trains?
Yes it did, and thankfully, I’ve not only found the trailer since, but a second one has been released!

@@ciarangleeson2880 Nice!
if anything, they could make Thomas a baby E2 (Babby Tombo, Sparkshot) with a model series face.
If you really want Thomas in WWII... just watch Victor Tanzig the guys literally done this stuff quite well
Personally, all I want to see is the rest of the character concept art and whatever script that was written. I wanna see just how far down the realism spectrum they would've taken it, even if this was Thomas during HiT 2009-2012
I feel like the WW2 part would just be a setting piece like how it was in Peter Pan 2
To be fair, technically some CGI storylines feature engines that weren't put into production until after they supposedly take place...
Can you now lease talk about the script, premise and story now , I am saying this because there is a video that actually interview the director and told what the story will be like
EDIT: Actually never mind, this is a great video on its own, and your points on that video is actually accurate to the actual script, I JUST LOVE HOW IRONIC THAT IS! 😂
Nah, that’s an amazing video and kinda stands on its own. Feels cruddy to simply restate what he’s already said in a great video format considering he and the team with him went out of their way for new information.
Rewatch that video if anything, I can’t add anything new or necessarily better so they deserve that revenue/ attention lol
@@ItsTrainBoy Yeah your rights, your points actually accurate to the acual script, and I love it, thanks for letting me know
Do you have a pitch for what your perfect Thomas movie would be?
I wish it would come out, maybe the "Untitled mark Forster film" will be somewhat of a new version
I should do some designs of the engines, rolling stocks and vehicles in their Railway Series look for the Marc Forster movie.
To be fair we have already seen Thomas in a irl setting, we see it magic railroad to a lesser extent but he's there with real people
I didn't know this project even existed until now.
I find it funny how you mention Awdry created the books to act as a means of escapism from the real world in the regard to things such as war when he would go on to mention part of the Skarloey Railway being run by the ministry of defense in The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways.
Very true, it’s sad but I dunno if that’s something most people are gonna know about though. I enjoy the extended bits from the Talyllyn lectures and have been getting more into those too but piecing that all together is proving to be harder than I thought 😭
And now it's ruined
I wouldn’t mind seeing a movie about the Reverend himself and the inspirations he drew from the real life engines Thomas and friends are based on
Yeah! A docudrama or maybe just a mini series. Why not?
I personally believe that the engines would've been painted either in war tim black with red stripes or some with camouflage (except for Toby, he'd probably still be painted brown, probably used for shunned or pulling medical trains)
