Damaged Lower Intake! Plastic Threads! Jeep Wrangler 3.6 Pentastar Pt 2 • Damaged Lower Intake! ...
Today we have a Jeep Wrangler Sahara with the 3.6 Pentastar engine. The customer states engine oil is leaking and it is a large leak. Be placed the jeep in service mode and began the inspection. It was found that engine oil was leaking off of the valve covers, after lifting the jeep, we found more oil on the back side of the engine and on the transmission. The intake manifold was removed and then the lower intake manifold was removed. Engine oil was found pooling up in the valley between the cylinder heads. The oil cooler assembly was then removed and inspected for leak sources. The o rings were found to be deformed and leaking engine oil.

Ray does his editing must have been hammered 🎉😂
must have been a Friday night edit
I'm glad somebody said something. I thought I was having a stroke.
Everything is a hammer.
completed it all in the chop shop!
Definitely some 'pregnant' pauses in there! Thought Starlink was going on the fritz!
Your editing of the scenes just stopping kept making me think my internet connection was dropping....fooled me more than once! :)
I cursed out Comcast so many times before I read the comments. 😅
I having the road dug up outside so I thought similar
To me it was like an ad was starting the first few times until I figured out what was going on
Same here 😂
My feelings exactly
That duck is a symbol that you support your local mechanic and pay for their kids college tuition.
Much like you do when you use the local diner, coffee-shop, tailor, hardware store, whatever. Do you get different colour ducks for them?
Ray fixes another shade tree botch. Ray you and Lauren are just awesome. Your honesty and automotive knowledge is unparalleled. The $$$ I've saved watching your vids is amazing. Keep up the great HONEST work. Find myself addicted to your videos. It's like having my own automotive class.
Remember when the JD Power awards were for "serviceability" instead of "innovation"?
It amazes me how many shops will put a car back together after making things worse and offer nothing to their customers except, “Have a nice day”. Your shop is showing the work they it does…literally. No question that you care about the repeat customer. I remember back in the day, I think it was Ford, the slogan, “Quality is job one”. You definitely take that one to heart. You do take some shortcuts, but it never cuts into the level of your work…and it’s entertaining.😁
Who doesn't like the Wife Unit smile? How nice it is to see them working the business together so well! And the narration is wonderful. Kinda Janky editing this time... The abrupt stops were weird... 😁😁😁😁
came to the comments to make sure it wasn't just me lol
Ive been married over 40 years ... (2x) very loving and carrying women, but when they were/are both on thier daily missions in life(like anyone else) its very rare to see smiles(except when i screw up and they both found it funny)
100% we do. It’s nice to see happy marriages and happy kids. Now a days it’s not as popular to stay married and grow together. I’m lucky I married my wife when we were 18 and lucky for me she still loves me after 47 years. All our kids have divorced due to the wife unit needing to relive the lost teen years I guess.
Ray ! This design is a NIGHTMARE! (but a GOLDMINE for a service Tech) 😂 I can NOT believe how hard it is to remove that passenger side valve cover. The driver's side wasn't that easy either. This repair gave me FLASHBACKS of changing out KNOCK SENSORS on GM engines. I saw your hesitation about replacing the oil cooler, probably due to $$$. However, just like the KNOCK SENSORS I mentioned, the labor costs involved in a second(or THIRD) teardown make this job VERY EXPENSIVE.
GOOD CALL on your part for the aluminum oil cooler housing.
I cannot believe there are so many nitpickers on Ray’s video. Just sit back and enjoy the content the way it comes😊
Right!! If I find any reason not to watch a video I simply don’t watch but I still like just because it’s easy and helps who ever posted it. I definitely don’t spend time writing a rude comment. We normal folks just watch what we like. Perfect observation bravo. Nice!!
This video illustrates perfectly why I could NEVER be a mechanic. I lack the patience required, for sure! Thank God for guys like Ray!
Same and I would forget how to put it all back together...
Goodness Ray, what the cuts man!....😂🤣
He was just adding camcorder pause effects, to give some nostalgia!
@@mvmorr01 🤣😂
They wave at each other on the roads and treat everyone like a friend, Getting a duck is basically a show of respect for your car from another Jeep owner. It's so fun, and people display them in their cars
more like commiserating over maintenance costs
Except true Jeepers NEVER refer to a Jeep as a "car". That is an insult to the Jeep. Back in Dec, I was having scans made at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville (I live in S. Georgia). I came back to my Jeep and found a small duck on the driver side door handle. Made my day!
Its the stupidest damn 'trend' people come up and touch your junk, leaving some cheap ass plastic 'duck' because, jeep or something. I have had 2 left, tossed them both in the trash. My jeep isn't a status symbol, its not a show car, its a jeep, it gets beat on, driven hard, and put away wet.
Hey Richard I have a Hummer and I got a duck on my door handle too here in Eugene Oregon thumbs up for you too@@richardgreen1383
Pentastar engine…🤦🏻♂️
Our shop has performed several of these oil cooler replacements. We’ve used an all aluminum Dorman cooler and it leaked. It was determined their O rings were cheap (probably Chinese knock off?) We reverted to the Chrysler cooler since the part was revised and used their O rings. It’s a lot of work to access this part, I certainly hope this works out for Ray. I’ve seen him use the Dorman cooler on other Pentastar engine repairs.
How much do mechanics charge for this job?
Good day to you Ray!!! I have to say, I will never own a pentastar V6. What a mess of an engine!!! I would bet that a majority of your jobs are fixing botched repairs. Jeep should use the straight six in these vehicles. Maybe employ the new Hurricane six? Dave sounded very busy in this video. It was so charming to see Wife Unit doing her cameo appearance. Ray you are so blessed. Great video bro!!!😁👍
At least this one didn’t have the optional inspection ports added to the crankcase
“Mess of an engine”? Really? It had valve cover leaks and the oil cooler. Big deal. 147k and it runs fine. The Pentastar should use a little less plastic but it is otherwise a great engine.
@@tylermacconnell217 Sir, you are entitled to your opinion, as am I, have yourself a great day 😁👍
@@davidbaize4825 Part of the benefit of being able to comment on a video is to educate - and I don't mean that condescendingly. Ray tends to get down on the Pentastar in his videos, because he has worked on a few bad ones, but they really are a great engine. Good power, good fuel economy, good longevity, smooth and quiet. Relatively easy to work on. Every engine has good things and bad things. The "bad" things with the Pentastar are the oil cooler - which is a pretty simple fix - and cam lobe wear on some of them. That's a harder fix, but also not catastrophic. It doesn't happen to many of them. This engine is literally in millions of vehicles on the road now. It is in its 14th year of production with only one major revision - rare in terms of engines these days. Many of these engines will go well beyond 200k miles with minimal issues. Every mechanic has his biases. Ray originally insulted Fords as much as anything - but his friendship with Arod from Powerstroke Tech Talk has caused his opinion to change a bit. Anyway, buy whatever you like, but taking one youtube mechanic's word is not the best option. See scotty kilmer, for example.
@@tylermacconnell217 I am happy to hear you say all this. I have a 21 Pentastar and have become uneasy watching some of these vids. I am somewhat easier now, in my mind anyway...
I don’t what’s wrong with the jump cuts, but it makes me appreciate all the more the work that you put in to these videos ❤

Hating the sudden black editing screen for the rest as always a very good video❤
Hate the editing on this, it feels like I'm continually re-buffering.
Agreed. Every jump cut gives a popping in my headphones. Farming out the work maybe.
Messed me up at first
Ok thought it was my internet or something.

I think that he's edited the video for brevity. It's a change not not dreadful
I cannot count how many things you disconnected. You have to really love this type of work.
nice turn of a phrase 'severely entertaining' well done Ray
[Deep Movie Announcer Voice-Over] "Rainman Ray's Repairs. Severely entertaining. Coming soon to a CZcams video near you."
Wow I feel like an idiot. I'm a technician and have done these valve covers a bunch of times, and never realized removing the battery tray would of given me more room to get to the screws to the back for that pcv elbow. I've always fought with those screws from the top. Thank you for showing me that removing the tray will aid in removal next time.
Back in my younger days we started a racing club that would race street rods at the drag strip about fifteen miles from us. When we would meet in one of the local towns and drive where all the locals would cruise on weekends. When doing this we would have rubber chickens and throw them into other members cars when passed the or ended up next to each other at a stoplight. We also did a thing with pint jars and tropical fish. That we set on the center line of the street at the stoplights and either we put one down or picked it up, depending on if one was there or not. I thought about doing that with the girls we riding with us but we all decided to nix that in a hurry because of the trouble factor.
You mentioning the ducks in the jeeps reminded me of the crazy old days.
I am not a professional mechanic but I have watched you do this enough times to see the shoddy work that has been done to this vehicle. I think it is a great thing you film this stuff so if there is any question it can be answered in video format. Screw the haters as they are everywhere and on every channel. Great job and always look forward to you content,,, and the Mandatory Wife Unit Appearance. 😁
I like it when your wife is in the video. She is your best half. She helps you run a fantastic business. Both you and your wife work very well together. You are very blessed to have her Ray.
You speak in a non- sugar covered truth. People dont like that anymore, but I do.
As the Car Guys used to say "Where there's smoke, there is a Saab".
I don't think that you run your mouth. I enjoy your commentary and the way you explain exactly what you are doing. Keep up the good work.
I totally agree 👍
Ray you were talking about hoping your customer didn’t make this repair and making fun of them. I kind of had the same thing happen. I am a mobile heavy equipment, tech, and I drive everywhere. Well in Atlanta traffic, I didn’t road rage, but I was discussed with someone driving near me. They cut me off. I was mad wanted to tell him how bad the driver they were. But I didn’t. Then I realized when I pulled into my first job, it was my customer. After that I am very careful who I externalize my anger towards. 😅
I’m not trying to” nitpick” you ever,I love your videos and your personality, but if something has a heavy oil leak shouldn’t we always check the fluid before we start it even to move it in the shop, not only good practice but to teach Younghans that as well, but again I thumbs up all your videos and you’re truly inspirational doing most of your work one-handed with the camera and other, you’re a good human being God bless☝🏻🙏🏻💯
Absolutely
I watch you every weekday very entertaining and interesting wish we had machanics in england like you you show people the truth very refreshing
How on Earth, does anyone remember how it all goes back together? Bravo to you Reynaldo!
Hey Ray and old trick to putting back those wood screw type fasteners back on, hand rotate them backwards until they click then tighten them down.
You have to love those high quality plastic Engine parts. I can't stand Shady mechanics work. Great job ray, We can always Cancel on you to fix it right an honestly.
I was glad to see that you were careful enough to use a paint matched towel to put it into service mode two. Well done Ray!
Never heard severely & entertaining used in same sentence b4. Good work!!
Nicely done Ray!
I got a headache thinking about how that is going to be to put back together. I love your channel Ray. You are awesome on what ya do.
As a diy'er, I love you're confidence. I'm always concerned I'll forget how to reassemble.
Good morning Ray 🌄 another blessed day 💜🙏
Thanks for the time saving edits! I like!
The aftermarket oil coolers have been known to have leaky seals. Proceed with caution and consider using Mopar seals.
Thank you for responding to the editing cause I came back after about 3 months and didn't know if that was your new style. 😊
New mechanics watch this man he’s patient and smart two traits that are a must to be a good mechanic 😁👍
Ray, I always look forward your videos. Keep up the great work brother. Greetings from New Orleans.
Battery tray removal is zero bolts after the battery is removed on a ton of imports. Love to see it.
Well done Ray 👍
Talk about a engineering cluster. Ray you have a lot of patience.
Note to self; never buy a jeep or Chrysler vehicle especially a jeep wrangler with the 3.6. props to you for the patience working on this vehicle.
It amazes me that people still buy these cars when there are so many problems that are built into these vehicles. It is 2024 and only two things cause these types of failures. They are either criminally stupid or doing it on purpose.
Yet another repair that requires so much disassembly to get to the engine parts. Again, Ray, you do not hesitate to remove what's needed. Thanks for the Lauren cameo added in. Love them being required! lol 😄
I feel your pain Raymond. These engineers AT STILLANTIS sit at desk running CAD. They don’t see the REAL WORLD
Ok. It took me 4 months, but I have now watched every single video now on this channel.
I still don't know anything about cars or how they work.
But I now know the Theory of Gravitas. I could be a physicist.
Glad to see the RAY back in his natural habitat...a day without a ray repair video is like a day without oxygen....which he's gonna need Xtra because it's a pentastar!😂😂
OMG 😱 you mean the world isn't perfect 😮 love your videos 👍
Great video as ususal, nice touch on the eiditing scene changes. Ray ROCKS!! I bet this will be a 3-part series, based on the wonderful advernture you are having with the fuse box... : -)
I'm so jealous of a 7-8 yr old Jeep not being rusted out. Or anything, for that matter, not rusted out.
Might have to get a recent jeep for those years when nothing keeps not going wrong with my 2003 Nissan.
Good to see a LHD with a bonnet where the hood was.
You're definitely the man that car need to live longer !
Ok, the freezes and jump cuts are new 🤣
the cuts are brutal
Agreed.... Talk about whiplash..😂🤣
When you said the engineers made something easy for a mechanic at 3:30 I knew you were in for it. You pushed your luck taking connectors loose saying it would be "easy peazy."
Then karma bit taking the rt cover off.
In the'80s engineers would come down to our hangar floor and confer with mechanics on best ways for mods or special repairs.
We've been replaced by cad programs so the engineers never have to go out of their cubicle.
Keep up the good work Ray.
The battery tray is so fun to pull out
Fantastic video Ray.... Those oil Coolers are a nightmare!!
Yes they are!
Good Morning Ray, this was very interesting, especially since "everyone" touts the Pentastar as being a great engine....maybe after Ray replaces some of the worst plastic parts! Can't wait to see it all go back together, all back together and break-cleaned off and tested for oil leaks.....sure is a beautiful Jeep though...I hope the customer plans to keep it for a long time!
Love the content as always. The editing not so much on this video.
Thanks for the channel Ray 😀
@rainmanray hello and good day to you. Thank you for making this video and thank you for doing everything you do to share your diagnostic process with us all. I'm looking forward to part 2. 😊
I'll be saving this video. I e owned my 2015 wrangler for 9 years now, no leaks fingers crossed.
I’m glad I get to see what’s involved with replacing that oil cooler. My wife has a 2016 jeep wrangler as well. Only 40000 miles on it but I see the headaches coming in replacing the oil cooler assembly. I’m planing on ordering the aftermarket aluminum one this summer. Just as a precaution. I can’t do the job myself, so I’ll ask my mechanic what it’s going to cost for the job. He’s ok with me getting the parts. Thanks Ray.
Same Jeep. Mine has 85,000. So far, so good.
204th! Have a great Monday Ray and your super wife unit. And that also goes for the new employees. Not a Jeep fan. And watching your efforts to diagnose let alone fix it was a nightmare and bolstered my opinion of the brand. I wish you all the best in fixing this mess. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
Seeing Jeep I remembered Troy, I hope he is doing well.
Those cuts are brutal,in my opinion. Love ya Ray
I love watching your videos. I just want to give you and FYI. I did the passenger valve cover gasket on my 2014 wrangler last month. To get to that lower PCV bolt remove the fender flare and wheel liner. It makes it a whole lot easier to access the bolt without removing the battery tray and fuse box.
I remember when a valve cover gasket swap took about 10 minutes. The design of these engines are ridiculous.
Just me being an old guy😂
I like the things you say!! Run your mouth as much as you want!! Seeing you from the beginning to now, I’d say everything you said when running your mouth at the previous places, it was well-worth the running. It’s such a blessing to see not only how far you and Lauren have come but also to see you stick it to the man and prove all the nay sayers wrong. Very proud of you both and still such an honor to be a part of it from the interwebs.
If y’all are ever in Colorado, let me know! I’d love to cook or take yall out to dinner.
You make me feel great. You managed to tear that Jeep down without using one 4 letter word! I had to dissemble almost as much on a Hemi Ram. A good many of my curse words started with the word "mother." It was good to see a wife unit appearance. Nice work!
I’ve thought several times watching you work how much time and pain it takes to just get access to the problem. Makes me miss my first car 1966 Pontiac Catalina “boat”. So simple back then (says the old geezer!)
Even in the 1970's and the econo boxes of the 80's.
You may want to suggest the oil filter adapter from Baxter Performance, holds oil at the top of the engine to prevent dry startups which are harmful to the valve train
Welcoming back!
Im glad you mentioned the editing glitches on this, i thought it was my device
Good morning Ray, again where is the Dave ‘sighting’?? LOL! I sure hope that your customers appreciate the ‘extra’ diligence that you do for them. I wished I lived closer to your shop, even though I own das autos. 😂😂😂
Here is a cool thing to try when changing the crush washer on the oil plug. Take the cap off the oil and put a shop vac in the hole where the cap goes and turn it on. That will allow you to go underneath the vehicle and unscrew the bolt and you won't drop a bit of oil
Hey Ray, been watching since right after you left the dealership.
My wife unit hates your videos (and all other auto related vids I watch... you're in good company!). but I watch nonetheless.
Just wanted to say I appreciate the shorter videos.... 35 minutes vs 1:10 vids. Just figured I'd give you some feedback.
I work in healthcare and my job is all about diag and troubleshooting. Love your approach to problems. You'd be amazed at how close some of it is to working on the ICU.
Love working on my cars on my off time.
Thanks bro!
For that lower bolt on the PCV, I think some people have had decent luck removing the wheel liner and going in from the wheel well. I'm changing mine this weekend and that's my plan of attack.
I am guessing that you are using a different program on your editing software. Because there are some hard transition and not your usual videos. It is of no matter because I enjoy watching your videos no matter what. Have a great day Ray!
Makes it hard to watch. I'll still watch but hoping this isn't the new editing style.

Thanks for sharing your mechanical nightmares. 😉
That engine looks like it needs to join the Fararri-bird and PT Cussers in the ol’ car crusher as well.
I like this guy, Ray, he's good. He reminds me of me. A great eye for detail. He's swift, quick, intelligent. He's intelligent. He also has a good command of the English language. Amazing! Will wonders never cease?
So this Ray, of light, sounds like a Quality Control, expert. A, QC Manager. I certainly was. For, a legendary manufacturer. And so raise sounds very, seasoned, he's experienced, he's knowledgeable, informed, swift. I love that about RainMan Ray. He reminds me of me. I was real good at what I did. And for over five decades that's 50+ years. I was no-nonsense.
When you know you know. When you're good, you're good. And when people have looked to you. For your expertise. Knowing that you are knowledgeable and highly seasoned. People all know we always get it right. We gain a reputation. A good reputation. Like I'm certain Ray, has. Yup. You know it. You can hear it. He reminds me of me.
And so more power to you, Sir. And your customers and clientele. For taking their precious vehicle to a person who knows, what they are doing. As incompetence is quite rife. And you can see some right there. Under the hood. Under the bonnet. Ugh! As those little things do make a difference. And we all know it. Such as when things are loose and not secured. They can resonate with the vibrations. Which can interrupt, airflow. And since an engine is nothing more than,, and air pump. You don't want anything interrupting that flow of air. With nonresident vibrations. Nobody thinks that's important? It is! They are dummies.
And so this guy,, Ray, doesn't just remind me of me. I also find resemblance to, Scotty Kilmer.! A true character indeed. With, like me over 50 years of experience. Who I love to follow also. Because he reminds me of me. We are both highly experienced and retired, Engineers.
Though mine is not in mechanics. It's in, Major Network Television Broadcasting and Live Recordings and Broadcasts. Studio design, fabrication, construction, maintenance, operations.
And it just cannot be amateur hour.. As NBC under the tutelage of RCA. Only hired the best engineers in the world.. And they hired me back in 1981. Really? I'm a good engineer? Who knew? And to tell me they want me sticking around for a while. For what was only supposed to be a short 4 month,, contract job. Quickly turned into, 20 years. As they wanted to keep me on board. And I let them. I knew who I was working for. The first, the best, the biggest, the most advanced, in the world. That led the way. Also manufacturing their own equipment, at RCA. When I got there. We had RCA Everything. But it was time to get some new stuff. And RCA was no longer manufacturing, Equipment.
And so it's truly great and heartwarming. To see somebody like Ray, here. Actually figure out what is wrong! Bravo!
Remember when jeeps were easy to service? Kind of like a VW beetle. What the hell is with this mess? How is anybody supposed to service this, complicated mess of, inaccessiblabilities. Chrysler ingenuity! Ugh!
I think the only good thing that ever came up with was the Chrysler Turbine Car. I had one. That almost rolled over my feet. As I was crossing 11 Mile Road and Woodward Ave. in Detroit. Where I lived and was raised as a kid until I was 15. And deeply into the, car scene. As my dad took me to all the Auto Shows at, Cobo Hall. The stock auto shows. The custom auto shows. And the hydrofoil, races. On the Detroit River. It was Awesome. As a kid growing up in Detroit. From the mid-1950s throughout the 1960s. When Detroit was King of the Cars. And people had lives in nice middle-class jobs. It was a fruitful era. For the citizens of Detroit. It was Awesome. Back in the day. When we actually stood for something.
Now? I don't know what this Jeep thingy is? It's sure no Jeep. It's just another overly complex, car. With a Jeep Facia. Jeep, look. But not really a Jeep. I mean what Jeep has air conditioning? They don't have a top generally. So they need no air conditioning. This is a Jeep Pussy Car. It's not a Jeep. It only looks like one. To fool everybody. As a Jeep only has a 4 cylinder motor. That is easily, serviced. That's not this.
I got to use a Jeep CJ-2. In the summer of 1987. Now that was simple to maintain. That was an actual Jeep. It had no top. Which could be problematic during cloudburst's. As I experienced a couple of those. Ugh! No top! And you look weird. When you're sitting there at a red light getting poured upon. I mean what do you do? You smile at people gawking at you. To let them know you enjoy your Jeep experience fully. But I was happy to get my Chevy conversion van back out of the shop. It has a roof on it. It has a bed in the back. It's got seating for 7. And fun to take your friends out for rock 'n' roll shows. Not so much in a Jeep CJ-2.
So I'm more of a Van Dweller. It's got a roof. It's got secure storage. It's not a Jeep.

Got wife unit compliance and chipmunk before halfway point, how cool is that! And a reeee not long after.

Great video. Didn't care for the editing at the beginning but I'm sure it was to cut down video length. I don't mind the long videos as they are entertaining & informative. Thanks for all you do Ray.
Always enjoy your videos Ray. Although the cuts in this video made me think adverts are coming 😂
Some high end editing job, but wouldn't have it any other way, keep doing you Ray, have a good day
I can’t see how you keep track of all the screws, nuts, bolts, fasteners, clips, gaskets, etc. you took out just to get to the root of the problem, fix it, then have to put everything back together…
Nice work…and a great PSA on not buying a Stellantis product
Our local rural mail carrier has one of these Jeeps - and drops oil all over the place, especially at the community mail box.
That battery tray though 👌
Do what you want, say what you want i will always watch.
0:08 man that looks nice, you got that rusty old jeep all fixed up in no time. To think it was on the other side of the fence just a few days ago all but given up on. With the bleek prospect of the salvage yard.
great video. just got my truck from the second dealer who wanted to fix it. the first, not sure what they wanted to do but it wasn't to fix it. another 1500 miles then I get to do it.
Wow, looks like I dodged a bullet by not purchasing a Jeep. Ive wanted one for a really long time and now that they come lifted with nice tires and wheels made me want one even more. Not any more. Thank you ray for a great video. Have a great day and a better tomorrow..
Jeeps were amazing vehicles until the 2007 redesign. The engines were never bad, but the complexity they added ended up being far to much. A jeep was never ment to be complicated, just a box with a motor. Italy lost the Jeep Magic.
I've done quite a few of these! I've never taken the Battery etc out! Some PCV Valves have 3 screws! What a pain taking all that crap out to get to those screws!
Something happened at time marker 17:37 It was sure time to get his coffee 😂
